We are back for another entry in the 'First Bytes' series over on our YouTube channel which sees the wonderful Felix playing through a collection of classic games for the first time.
This week, Felix is continuing his adventure through The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. This is the third livestream in the series and he has already managed to polish off a good portion of the game so far. Last week, we saw Felix successfully take on Dodongo's Cavern so we're excited to see how far he can go this time.
Up until this point, Felix has managed to achieve all of this with the Switch Pro Controller — no mean feat, I'm sure we can all agree — but this stream will see a special N64 upgrade coming his way. This is, surely, the way to play through Ocarina on the Switch so be sure to tune in and see what difference it makes.

Embarrassingly, I haven't played Ocarina of Time yet, so I have avoided these streams, I don't want spoilers!
Please play some classic Mario, it would be great to see Felix play the original NES Mario trilogy!
@MarioBrickLayer You’ve got to get on that! I first played back in the 00s with the Cube version and the game still blows me away whenever I play it, especially using a randomizer.
I replayed the N64 one on the Switch toward the end of 2021 and it kind of made me appreciate the 3DS port all the more since it was my first time playing that version since the 3DS one came out.
It's kind of easy just looking at it to just take the 3DS one as, "The N64 one but it looks nicer and they made the boots less annoying and added better aiming," but going back to the N64 one it just kind of feels slower by comparison all around. Still very enjoyable but next time I play it will probably again be on the 3DS.
@MarioBrickLayer ocarina of time is such an epic adventure. One of my all time favorites. Go out there and save hyrule! I’m sure you’ll enjoy it 😄
@Lizuka I played both n64/nso and the 3ds and though I played it on the original hardware more, the 3ds version has a slight edge. Like you stated, they fixed those boots which helped game flow and the 3d is implemented well. I’d just like a bigger screen. A little hand holding with hints but I’ll be the first to admit I read a walk through for the water temple back then 😂 Again something the 3ds version fixed.

@Lizuka I think the 3DS version has improved frames per second. I think it was a fixed 30 fps (or targetting 30 fps) where the N64 version ran at or around 20 fps. This might explain the feeling of it running faster (or smoother rather).
@MarioBrickLayer Highly recommend to play it. It was what got me into the series and is still my favorite one to date, along with BOTW. You have time until ToTK drops.
@Lizuka I have played OOT on every version possible even the Master Quest. I enjoy the 3D version a lot but if I have to choose to replay it on the N64 simply because of the Gold cartridge is the uncensored version. The tone is much more darker on that one. Like red blood in the Dark Temple/ Bottom of the Well and the chanting from the Fire Temple that was removed from the later versions
@Lizuka I played the original N64 one at a friend's house, had it on GameCube thanks to the bonus disc in Wind Waker, got the Virtual Console version on Wii... but the first time I finished and completed it was on 3DS and how glad I am that's the case, it was a much, much smoother (and gorgeous) experience so I'd also recommend that version @MarioBrickLayer if possible!
@Shiro28 @Thwomp_Stomper @nessisonett Thanks for the recommendation! I will play it at some point, I recently got the NSO expansion pass, so I'll get to it soon, but not before TotK unfortunately.
@JohnnyMind I don't have a 3DS, so i'll make to make do with NSO, not sure if NSO is better or worse than the N64? I know there were issues when it launched, but I thought they had all been fixed?
@MarioBrickLayer From what I've heard (haven't played it myself yet) yeah, most if not all issues of the NSO version have been fixed so you should be perfectly fine with that version!
