With no big new releases to speak of, this week's UK boxed charts paints a very similar picture to what we might expect (bar the switch of positions three and four, the first nine places are identical to last week). While God of War Ragnarok continues to sit on the top spot with the likes of FIFA 23 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II in positions two and three respectively, it has been yet another strong week for Nintendo.
Once again, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is Nintendo's top scorer in fourth place. This is something that we have become used to as of late, but with the game nearing its 300th week in the charts (this is its 298th), the stats continue to dazzle.
From here on in, the top ten is a wash with Nintendo titles. The remaining positions are occupied by classics such as Nintendo Switch Sports, Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Minecraft, relative newbies in the shape of both Pokémon Scarlet and Violet taking up places five and seven, and even a surprise appearance from New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe which jumps back into the charts down at the bottom.
All said and done, it is a pretty picture for Nintendo fans! Here's your look at this week's UK boxed charts:

"Mario and Pokémon did well last week".
That’s almost every single week in the Switch’s life so far? 😂
MK8D is sold out on Amazon UK (not including third party sellers). Madness.
What was the Fifa split please?
I finally picked up New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe Last week... I have it already on Wii U but finally decided to double dip..
@KindofaBigDeal
PS5 - 34%
PS4 - 26%
Switch - 25%
Xbox - 11%
I know there are jokes about MK8DX hanging on, but I can see it being there for a long time yet in the UK. Given the country's current problems, being a frequently updated, frequently bundled evergreen on the cheapest console is a great position to be in.
I'm still not too pleased about Scarlet and Violet being separated, but I think it'll be interesting to see how the gap between them develops as they finally slip down the charts.
@Olliemar28
Cheers!
@BANJO Do you mean Wii U or did you actually mean Wii? Cause NSMBUDX is a port of the Wii U game, not the Wii game.
Although I wouldn't be surprised if someone thinks they are the same since they are so similar lol
So Minecraft is a Nintendo game? If you say so...
@mariomaster96 Yes, A port of the Wii U version I have. My Wii U version is the version in the green box with Luigi U included so it's a port of that.
I'm aware I now have it twice 😀
(I've also edited my post now I did put Wii and should have put Wii U)
NSMBUD back in the Top 10 is equal parts amazing and maddening. I'd love an all new 2D Mario on Switch, but can hardly blame Nintendo for milking the existing catalogue.
I actually played the co-op in the holidays and had forgotten how much fun it is. The levels aren't all great, though there are some real highlights, but the world map and secret routes are the best of any Mario game ever.
Myes, well ...At least Pokémon has a new game (no matter how hideously rushed and buggy it may be) and does not rely on decade- old Wii U ports.
Not totally surprising to see a surge in sales for New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe if you figure everyone who received a Switch over Christmas moved immediately to add that essential 2D Mario title to the library. First principles!
Plus, the hype for the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie could be creating renewed interest in classic, 2D Mario.
@karlhendrikse
It is only the Switch version in the top 10. The Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft versions of Minecraft are classified as separate games and tracked separately.
So NL is correct in that there is 7 Switch only titles in the top 10.
@karlhendrikse that position is held by Minecraft: Nintendo Switch edition
@Limberlost I would get Odyssey over NSMBU if I were new to the Switch….
Wow the fact that an old game like New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe all of a sudden appeared in the top seller is quite interesting, you think they got enough of the game already.
So sick of all the YouTubers saying Mario Maker makes 2D Mario obsolete. I personally much prefer 3D Mario but the market for 2D Mario is still very strong… lots of ppl out there myself included would rather play a Nintendo made 2D Mario rather than suffer through thousands of half arsed projects with the odd decent levels nevermind I don’t have time to mess around creating my own. I still hope they innovate and evolve the genre but as long as they do that then it is anything but obsolete and it will probably continue to destroy Mario Maker in the sales department.
@dil_power Mario Maker makes regular 2D Mario obsolete. Nintendo makes some great levels, but there's only so many levels. You could beat every level within a couple weeks in any traditional Mario game, and they're great, that's a fun game, but what do you get 30 hours of platforming and then you gotta play something else. I've spent 1000s of hours in Mario Maker 1 & 2, I didn't even notice there was a game drought on Wii U because I had tens of thousands of levels I was playing through made by the best creators in the world.
You say you don't want to suffer through thousands of half arsed projects and don't want to make your own, well okay, that's how I play too. There is no reason to make anything, and there is no reason to play bad levels. Forget all that, just search for levels you like in the Detailed search (or go to Top Creators), your preferred difficulty, sort by top rated, Speedrun, Puzzle, Traditional, whatever, and then look at the fastest time to get an idea of how long the level is. The new Tab has junk of course, but the filters are there for a reason.
@Olliemar28 25% of Fifa sales being on Switch is a big win for EA considering they are buying the Legacy Version. It's easy money for EA...
@Nintendo_Thumb wow, thank you for your detailed comment =D. I only played very little Mario Maker on Switch because my online expired (I play mostly offline single player and barely have any time to play at all lately) but I appreciate your input and I’ll definitely consider giving the online levels another go once I renew it. I have been meaning to try a few levels I saw ppl playing on YouTube anyway.
I think for me the main give away is probably what you are referring to as « regular » 2D Mario being obsolete. I agree in the sense that if Nintendo is to make another 2D Mario they really need to innovate (especially after 4 fairly sterile NSMB games).
I think my main issue is with some YouTubers (RGT85, Wulff Den off the top of my head) making the argument that Nintendo would be stupid to release single player 2D Mario games after making Mario Maker and in that strict sense I completely disagree. Nintendo is a business and a relatively old 2D Mario port on Switch is selling wayyy better than the brand new sequel to Mario Maker, it’s selling way better than lots of other games and last I checked almost as good as 3D Mario.
I think a new 2D Mario is inevitable and I hope it is fresh and innovative and very different from « regular » 2D Mario when it does come out. And maybe that game with its new art style / story / mechanics could encourage an even better Mario Maker 3 later on.
Ultimately I guess 2D Mario has become more casual and Mario Maker stepped in for those that are more skilled. And given I am not particularly skilled I can appreciate a more casual 2D Mario, but please Nintendo innovate a little. cheers
That God of War Ragnarok PS5 pack is doing work!
@GrailUK,
It's the only Way to get a PS5 at the moment, although Amazon U.K did have the console on it's own at retail, in stock for a day or so last week.
Not surprising, the U.K Game store has a massive section devoted to the Switch, and even the big supermarket have pretty good Nintendo Switch sections, the console is very popular, and such a massive turn around since the Wii U.
@johnvboy
Night and day isn't it?
What a time to be alive!
@KindofaBigDeal,
Awesome time to be a gamer core or more casual.
