It's a brand new year and we have the latest UK charts to kickstart 2023 (although technically this covers the last week of 2022). There are no major surprises this week and no new entries, but simply a minor reshuffling of the top ten games. At the top spot is Santa Monica Studio's God of War Ragnarok, climbing two positions to beat out FIFA 23 in second place.
Interestingly, the Switch version of FIFA 23 came joint first with the PlayStation 4 version in terms of the platform split, making up 28%. It just goes to show that EA's lack of effort with Nintendo's platform is seemingly paying off, at least in the UK.
Meanwhile, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe made its way into third place, knocking Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II down to fourth despite a 40% sales fall. Modern Warfare II sales dropping by 64% may have given Nintendo's racer the slight boost it needed to take the bronze.
Sonic Frontiers held strong at number ten this week, falling down from number seven. Once again, the Switch version dominated the boxed sales, making up a whopping 53% of the platform split. Finally, Animal Crossing: New Horizons made its way back into the top ten to come in at number eight, rising four position from the previous week.
One final thing to note: according to Christopher Dring over at GamesIndustry.biz, overall boxed sales in 2022 were down by roughly 10% in comparison to 2021.
Let's take a look at the top ten:

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a beast...
Was there ever a game that's been top for 5 years straight ?
@Abes3
If you are talking about MK8D is hasn't been. Majority of the time it has been in the top 10 yes but there has been many weeks where it hasn't been.
Be interesting to know the last time it was out of it though.
@NeonPizza it’s just a bit stale now after playing it since the wiiu days
@NeonPizza cool frog suit idea, as much as I love 8, it is a bit sterile
I'm so done with mk8. Please nintendo give us a new Mario Kart. Pretty certain the new one will launch with their next console.
Paw Patrol Grand Prix is deserved for more attention. It is a fun cartoonish racing game with Paw Patrol pups as playable characters.
Nintendo fans: we want new Mario Kart and a bespoke FIFA game
EA and Nintendo look at charts, laugh and shake their heads.
@NeonPizza,
Nintendo's art style is indeed timeless.
When ever a sales chart comes half of the top ten games were made by nintendo
MK8D deserves all its success but that FIFA stat is a bit depressing
You can’t drift better than mahrio
Who milks one game more? Nintendo, Bethesda or Rock Star?
@Anti-Matter stop it, you.
@NeonPizza I would even add MK8 could be so much more… story mode for one thing.
Regardless it’s undoubtedly the current best game in its genre regardless of the Mario branding.
Damn...released in 2014 and still racking up sales. Incredible
@PessitheMystic
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is not the only worthy racing game to play.
The other 3rd party kart racing games are worthy to play too.
I'm different.
Don't ever ask me to stop to be different.
Yeah Mario Kart 8 will not slow down much until either everyone who has a Switch has bought it, or they make a new game. It is generally always one of the primary games chosen when a person buys a Switch for the first time.
Nintendo has substituted a food fight in the cafe to a money fight with how much profit MK8 has brought them.
@NeonPizza Do you not break-drift on 200? - I've never had an issue with hitting walls in 200cc and i've got very good TT times too so it's not a skill issue my end
Great that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still selling in the top 10, people still can't get enough of the game or they are waiting for Wave 4 & 5 to be completed. Also the Nintendo Switch had just beat the Game Boy in the worldwide hardware sales chart coming in 3rd place putting it right behind the Nintendo DS and the PlayStation 2 worldwide lifetime sales.
I am very happy for Nintendo, and I totally get the business side to this, but I wish they would release more fresh content for the series. Still love the game, but I am so ready for something new.
