It's the second Sunday in May, which means it's Mother's Day in a great many countries around the world (although not in the UK, where Mothering Sunday falls in March). We're celebrating Mother's Day this year in a very special way and looking back fondly on one particular Mother that Nintendo fans around the world are united in their adoration of — Shigesato Itoi's MOTHER series.
Zion Grassl, lovely person and one of our resident senior video producers, has been lovingly crafting this video — the centrepiece of our Mother's Day celebration — for weeks, enlisting luminaries from across the video game fan and creator space to honour and salute the EarthBound games: EarthBound Beginnings, EarthBound, and MOTHER 3.
In these conversations Zion explores the special nature of this unique trilogy with some interviewees you'll likely recognise. Yes, you'll see some familiar faces, hear some familiar voices, and even hear from one particular indie game developer whose work was massively influenced by the MOTHER series. Yep, that indie game developer!
We hope you enjoy the video above. It's a (relatively) long watch — perfect for a Sunday — and we're very proud of it. Happy Mother's Day!

Quite possibly the finest video ever from the NintendoLife video crew, and a beautiful homage to a series that deserves all the praise in the world. Perfection ❤
Great work, well done everyone.
Good job guys.
The biggest thank you to everyone who's given this a look <3
I think Gavin must be a Chvrches fan.
@AndyC_MK111 Because it recently came out on NSO, and today is Mother's Day - so it was probably a buildup to today's video project.
@Ziondood Fantastic video and work Zion! I'm actually watching it now for a second time after the premiere!
Cracking video - thanks Zion, and all those who contributed!
Still need to watch the video, but I just think it's really funny that we have a crossover between Toby Fox and Scott the Woz now
Absolutely fantastic video. Well done
Silly question, but why all the Mother 3 coverage lately?
@AndyC_MK111 Ah yes? But the loud, pertinent people were telling us that this site featured nothing but Reggie articles...
I wouldn't be surprised if this is part of an understated push by this site to prod NCL into releasing Mother 3 at last. I seem to recall a video by Zion predicting that it would be released in the near future. If NL actually is encouraging the people in Kyoto to finally get down to it, I applaud them.
@Domino Mother 1 is wholly skippable. it's basically a large demo for Mother 2/Earthbound.
@WhatsUpFlapjack but it didn't come out on nso, there are no gba games on it
@CharlieGirl Yeah, honestly I think the majority of NES games have not aged well. There are still great games on there that hold up today, like Mario 3 and Punch-Out, but most of the library is frustratingly retro.
Anyway, this video is cool. Lots of familiar faces.
@Mikmoomamimocki You're absolutely right.
Hadn't had time yet, but what a great job Zion! 🤎
This video was amazing! So well done it felt like a TV show. Absolutely loved it and I'd devour more videos like this
Such a fantastic video! 😍
@Mikmoomamimocki I misread the comment. He said Mother 3 on an article on an Earthbound/Mother 2 video, which is what I was referring to.
@Domino It's only really fair to say as it isn't the best introduction to the series. A fun game to play afterwards I'd say, but I feel your pain!
Thank you all so much for giving the video a watch! Your kind words truly give us energy <3
Great video! One of the best I’ve seen on this site and I’ve followed this site for what seems like a decade.
@Ziondood Watching the video and seeing Jon back in one last video made me so happy and I loved the start
Literally cried my socks off geez
What a lovely video. I'm so glad that you guys showcase Mother in a positive way and support it! Definitely one of my favorite videos put out by you guys.
Hit us up when the nominations for (web/indie) documentaries are out. This one really deserves one! ❤️
When I was a kid and Earthbound was brand new, I remember being laughed at in school for pointing at a sceenshot of it in a GamePro (which gave it a pretty bad review) and calling it one of my favorite games. Even then, I preferred it being something it seemed only me and my brother knew about after finding out about all the massive weirdos who share my love for it. Some of these people take this stuff far far too seriously.
