Exactly a week after its release, Nintendo has rolled out a new update for its latest first-party title Splatoon 3.
This bumps the game up to Version 1.1.1 and includes a whole lot of changes. There are adjustments to Splatfests, player controls, the game's multiplayer - including Salmon Run, Story Mode adjustments and much more.
You can get the full rundown in the patch notes below, courtesy of Nintendo's official support page:
Ver. 1.1.1 (Released September 15, 2022)
Changes to Splatfests
- The rate of Tricolor Battle occurrence has been adjusted. From the defending team’s perspective, they will trigger somewhat less frequently than before.
Changes to Player Controls
- Fixed an issue where it was possible to jump farther than usual with a Squid Roll by performing a certain input while charging a Squid Surge.
- Fixed issues that appeared when playing for a long time without closing the software, such as shots from the player’s main weapon not firing correctly.
- Fixed an issue where the player could move through the surface of the water or stand on water when moving quickly. For example, when performing a Dodge Roll with Splat Dualies.
Changes to Multiplayer
- Fixed an issue where connection errors occurred with high frequency at the end of battles due to connection environment.
- Fixed an issue with the Bloblobber where the collision detection of the third and fourth blobs of a single volley became extremely small.
- Fixed an issue where cash and experience were not being awarded in certain circumstances when a battle ended early due to a lack of players.
- Fixed an issue where, in certain modes, a player would be unable to cancel matchmaking when not enough other players were gathered. Matchmaking will now be canceled automatically after a certain amount of time has passed.
- Fixed an issue in Sturgeon Shipyard in which it was possible to enter the back side of certain drawbridges.
Changes to Salmon Run
- Fixed an issue where connection errors occurred with high frequency at the end of jobs due to connection environment.
- Fixed an issue with Mudmouth Eruption events in which Mudmouths moved in unintended ways.
- Fixed an issue that caused some players with identical titles to be considered “rank supporters” and not gain Rank Points.
- Fixed an issue where continuously damaging a submerged Maws with certain special weapons would cause the game to crash.
- Fixed an issue where players were becoming trapped within the stage terrain.
- Fixed an issue where, at the end of battle, the amount of Grizzco Points earned would be shown as smaller than the amount actually added to save data, which caused cases where the player could not collect rewards.
- Fixed an issue where the messages at the beginning of Wave 3 could change based on whether or not a King Salmonid would appear.
Changes to Story Mode
- Fixed an issue where, after clearing the final stage, a communication error would occur in the middle of a certain scene and return the player to the square.
- The post-clear cutscenes can be viewed by clearing the final stage again.
- In cases where this error occurred, the final stage is treated as cleared, and the stage can be skipped from the pause menu when reattempting.
Other Changes
- Fixed an issue when starting the game for the first time in which the game could get stuck and not advance from the black screen after the screen where yellow and blue ink mix together.
- Fixed an issue when downloading a battle replay that occasionally caused the game to not advance.
- Fixed an issue in which the game would crash when the schedule was updated while attempting to join a friend.
- Fixed a rare issue where the game would crash while the player was visiting a shop.
- Fixed an issue where a communication error could occur while a player traded in gear at a shop.
- Fixed an issue where a connection error could occur when buying a weapon. A player would seem to then have the weapon equipped despite not having been able to buy it, which would cause a connection error if the player attempted to join a battle.
Because this update patch focuses on Splatfest-related changes and addresses bugs that can have significant effect on game progress, we have prioritized its release.
Please note that the changes to Tricolor Battle frequency should be considered temporary. For now, there will be somewhat more instances of players selecting Tricolor Battle but being placed in a Turf War battle instead. Going forward, Splatfest-matchmaking specifications will continue to be adjusted, and this issue will be rectified. We are planning to implement these adjustments with the new season beginning in December.
The next patch will focus primarily on balance adjustments and other issues that were outside the scope of the current patch.
We continue to observe and analyze battle data and are planning to make adjustments at the midpoint of the current season.
This latest update follows Version 1.1.0. You can find out more about this in our previous post. Have you downloaded this update yet? Noticed anything else? Leave a comment down below.

"Fixed an issue where connection errors occurred with high frequency at the end of battles due to connection environment."
Finally. Really sucked not being able to follow the same team across different battles because connection issues kept happening.
I'm a little disappointed in the fact that tri-color turf wars are just not occurring as often, instead of them trying to balance it in other ways. At least they seem to be making changes to it still.
But other than that, this is a great patch. The communication issues especially were a real bummer.
Really hoped it’s smoothed out most of the connection issues.
Thankfully, most of mine occurred outside of actual online battles (while attempting to join a match, etc.) but they definitely took some of the sheen off what is otherwise an exceptionally polished experience.
@Maxz Looks like it’s fixed them top to bottom, it’s amazing. I’ve been complaining about the connection issues all day lol, so it’s rad it got sorted out. Plays like a dream without all that nonsense.
Fixed an issue where, after clearing the final stage, a communication error would occur in the middle of a certain scene and return the player to the square.
This happened to me and I'm so glad I dont have to play through that entire boss fight again, and it'll just let me skip the stage to view it.
Seems like a really good patch. Splatoon 3 has been amazing for me so far (it feels like the sequel Splatoon 2 should’ve been, imo), and I’m glad to see some of its glaring wrinkles be ironed out.
@StarPoint It's probably too early to make drastic changes to balance it out based off just one demo where most players wouldn't have even known what they were doing.
I wish they made it possible to follow a friend into battles just by talking to him/her in the Lobby. from what I remember that was possible in Splatoon2
I'm unfortunately still getting frequent connection errors when returning to the lobby from anarchy battles. This sucks as it cancels out all experience and money and times me out for 4 minutes. It happens probably every 2-4 matches but turfwar works fine.
@StarPoint They mentioned that the Tricolor battle frequency should only be considered temporary though so they're certainly working on fixing it. I wouldn't worry too much for now.
It's late here, so I only got to try a bit, but "keep going" worked three times in a row for me, which is three more than it has before. So hopefully my main issue has been fixed. Will play more tomorrow, but yay!
Goes to show even with Nintendo games nowadays, smaller in nature compared to other massive games that patches are required.
That’s why always now a days I hold off for a while before buying.
It's a lot better. Before the patch, out of the last 12 battles I had, 4 of them were counted as draws due to players disconnecting. In the twenty-something battles I've had post patch, haven't seen any DCs. Still an occasional coms error in the lobby, but nowhere near as often compared to pre-patch. Good job, Nintendo. For now.
Hope they improve the graphics, struggling after investing so much time in 2. Disappointed to be playing the same stages from 2 but almost glad they are there as the new ones are boring. Hopefully the more I play the more I'll start to love.
Glad to see the multi player issues being fixed, as last night I had at least 8 games finish early due to connection problems. Great game (my first dip in the ink) and glad I brought it!!
"Fixed issues that appeared when playing for a long time without closing the software, such as shots from the player’s main weapon not firing correctly"
So, i wasn't crazy after all. It did happen.
Slighty disappointed they are reducing tricolour battles. It might be unbalanced but it's a new mode that's only available for half of splatfest, so reducing it even more seems a shame.
Maybe it's just me, but I was hoping for a time extension on Cohozuna. I don't know if he's given more health in the higher rankings, or the load outs/my team isn't as helpful, but I can never seem to kill him in the higher ranks. We generally get close but run out of time.
Good, now a week since launch I can start happily grinding away! I don't expect this to be the magic fix that stops all problems but I expect the communication errors in the lobbies should be much lower now. I was able to play a little more Turf War by starting over after each match in the Battle Pot instead of keep going but now I should play the way it should be. It was sad how the grand, new lobby was so marred by these errors.
Version 1.1.1...yet more compelling evidence that this is just Splatoon 1 in a different box?
@Moistnado no but if you add up all the ones you get 3! Coincidence? I think not
'Fixed an issue where, after clearing the final stage, a communication error would occur in the middle of a certain scene and return the player to the square.'
I know it says after the final stage but could you imagine getting to the point where everyone comes together to take down Mr. Grizz, with the most banging rendition of Calamari Inkantation to date.....only to have this pop up during it.

Glad this was pushed out as quickly as possible though. Time will tell whether or not it actually makes a difference but it seems like a fantastic patch from a first impressions.
Also, I know exactly what they're talking about with that Mudmouth glitch and saying they moved in 'unintended ways' would be understatement of the century.
@JAGleics Improve the graphics? These are the sharpest, smoothest, impressive graphics I've seen on Switch, and on a twitchy competitive game that needs to maintain a high frame rate, too.
So, whatever it is you are hoping for in that department, you are not likely to get it until new Nintendo hardware is released.
Maybe it's not as good in handheld mode? I haven't played it that way, yet. Was just watching my daughter play on the TV and remarking how impressive it looked, though.
Love the hilarious "finally" sentiment from some comments. It has been 7 whole days since release, right? Tough crowd.
My kids were starting to mention the disconnects as a regular thing they were noticing just yesterday just yesterday. Today, it is apparently greatly improved!
We are super-impressed by the waiting room that is active and how well playing with friends now works. It really sucked in Splatoon 2.
Great to hear that they are taking player feedback into account when making updates!
@OnlyItsMeReid you might be on to something. But could it mean that this game is 1/3 Splatoon 1, 1/3 Splatoon 2 and 1/3 Splatoon 3? Coincidence? We may never know.
@JAGleics
The graphics have already improved though. They are using the AMD upscaler to ensure that there aren't as many drops in resolution. They also have a lot more character animations - Ever notice the hair physics?
Well for me not fixed at all tonight i have had more connection errors than ever before, cant finish a single match, the game is not playable online at the moment
@wummle It's bizarre that there are (lots of) people like you who are having constant connection errors, and yet I have only had two dropped matches (and one dropped Salmon Run match) since launch. I'm rank 15, so not super high, but I've still played dozens and dozens and dozens of matches and very few drops. Very short matchmaking time too (never more than 30 seconds, often less than 10). Maybe some of the infrastructure they're using in certain parts of the world is just on the fritz?
fixed where tri-color happens less...only got to play it once...less than that, quick math here...never.😢
@MamaSelkie Well i am in Australia so maybe there is no infrastructure here and we are relying on another countries
@wummle That would be a big shame. I know Splatoon has a lot of fans in Aus and NZ.
They need to tweak the positions of the Ultra Signal drops when they get taken. Based on the RPS Splatfest, on the Shipyard, the Signal in Rock’s possession dropped too close to Scissors’ spawn to defend against. Rock’s territory pretty much had free reign over Scissors’ spawn as well with the right weapons. Maybe put up a few more inflatable barriers to obscure the view of the defender’s spawn and center the Ultra Signal’s positions more within the attacker’s territory.
Never had any connection errors at all but good for those that did. Now can somebody tell me what exactly is Tricolor Battle? I was unable to play the Premier so I'm going into the Splatfest not knowing what to expect.
@wummle Sounds like a case of high PING.
@RubyCarbuncle My ping is pretty good 7ms on speedtest.net but could be the issue if the servers are in another country still an unacceptable situation the game is unplayable in multiplayer, it was more stable before the patch and as we pay for online now you would expect much better from Nintendo.
@wummle Hmm odd. My PING is 3ms and I get 100MB sec down and 5MB sec up. With your PING you should be getting a near perfect experience. I hope this gets sorted out for you soon, it sucks for you 😦
@Frogurt007 I'm getting the same from regular old turf wars
Not big enough!!!
I still get kicked out while waiting.
I have not had 4 battles in a row yet !!!
Splatoon 2 - no issues (normally my choice of gaming when getting too frustrated by S3's issues).
Please fix, Nintendo!!!
I was really hoping they would fix the can't connect to players issue. I haven't been able to play a single match.
