Splatoon 3 finally launches tomorrow, and — as is customary in this day and age — Nintendo has prepared a launch day patch for the game to get the final release all prepared for some ink-tastic action this weekend.
Available later today, and downloadable once you've got that game loaded up onto your Switch, version 1.1.0 will let you change Cap’n Cuttlefish's appearance in Hero Mode — which is Story Mode — at the Crater tent. You'll also be able to use Photo Mode at certain locations during the story, too.
Here are the full patch notes from Nintendo, with translations provided by Perfectly Nintendo:
Version 1.1.0, 8th September 2022
Changes to Hero Mode
- You can now change Cap’n Cuttlefish’s appearance from the sketchbook at the Crater tent (press the A button to check it)
- Even if you have already progressed further in the story, you can
temporarily return to the Crater by examining the stuffed Zapfish at the
camp and selecting “Remember the Crater”.
- Photo Mode can now be used in Hero Mode (only in some locations)Other Changes
- Features requiring an internet connection are now available.
Pretty much your basic day one patch for an online game, right? Still, we're excited to Enter the Splatlands tomorrow when Splatoon 3 drops on the Switch. If you're a newcomer to the series, why not check out our review of the game to see whether it's worth your time?
Will you be grabbing your Splat Rollers, Splatana Wipers, or Splattershot Pros tomorrow? Ink up in the comments.

Has anything been mentioned about voice chat for this game? Is it through the app again?
Why not finish the game then launch it?
@blockfight Think it's confirmed to be just through the app again, yeah. No voice chat in game anyway.
Considering it's a game that'll obviously have a ton of post-launch content, it's not like the physical copies were going to have everything on cart for long anyway even if there was no day one patch. I'm going for a digital copy this time around which has already been at 1.1.0 since it downloaded so should be able to jump straight in at midnight.
I was hoping for some balance adjustments from the Testfire - namely nerfs for The Juice - but they'll probably come later
You can dress up Cap'n Cuttlefish? That sounds....illegal.
@KIRO Why not accept that being able to patch games is way better for you than games living with glitches forever?
@Bret To be honest though, glitches can be fun to mess around with. Game breaking glitches that just freeze or glitches that gives players an unfair advantage or whatever aren't, of course, but stuff like getting those 10000 arrows in BotW that was covered on this site as well today, or glitches that allow you to clip out of bounds in single player games and maybe even allow you to sequence break the story, are fun to just mess around with.
Still good that games can be patched though but not all glitches are necessarily bad!
@KIRO
You should be glad we're getting FREE updates. Back in the day, you basically had to go out to the store and pay full price for the same game, with an update added onto it. Day 1 updates have always happened, but they are much cheaper now than back then.
@Bret if it has glitches, it’s not a finished game is it? Finish it, test it, sell it. Granted I’m an old curmudgeon
@KIRO This patch doesn't even fix glitches, though. It's just a few QoL updates and the enablement of online services, like how pretty much every online game does it.
@KIRO Even Super Mario Bros 1 has glitches. But the difference is, that game can never be updated.
@StarPoint
This. These aren't bugfixes, they are adding new things.
If anything, it looks impressive that they didn't have to fix anything, or maybe they just don't talk about that...
Was hoping for a stringer buff day 1 patch
@Fizza And yet, so so necessary.
@KIRO gotta accept at some point that this is how video games are developed now.
@KIRO Ah, so games back in your day never had glitches? Never anything that the devs wished they could fix, but it was too late because the game was already on shelves? I'm 35 and I prefer what we have now.
@KIRO because they have to start printing the cartridges but the development doesn't stop. If they only discovered or managed to fix an issue afterwards they have to release an update
@Bret ha. No, old games were full of them. All I'm saying is, make the game, test it, have it done, sell it. I don't expect to buy a cake only to have the baker turning up later in the day to put the cherry on the top...
@Crockin yeah yeah, I know, I know....still....
@KIRO Developers make games. Developers are humans. Humans make mistakes. Games have mistakes. 🤷
@Cherkov To err is to be human. Still, imagine if you went to get a haircut, and you got back home and the back hadn't been done. Now you have an unfinished hair cut. You've paid for it. Then a little later in the afternoon, the hair dresser rocks up and cuts the back. They may not have done a good job, but who cares, they can come back later and sort it out shrug
@KIRO Yep. That's how things be.
“Pretty much your basic day one patch for an online game, right?“
Considering the game will still work without it and it’s not 100GB+, no, it isn’t.
@Fizza It is a mistranslation. It is supposed to say that you can go to Cap'n Cuttlefish's tent to customize agent 3's (captain) appearance
@GX_64 Thank god, that would've sounded extremely weird.
