The Sega Mega Drive Mini 2 has been made available for pre-order in the UK and Europe, exclusively through Amazon.
At the time of writing, the price of the console has been set at £104.99, which bizarrely is actually more expensive than North America, where it's currently priced at $99.99 (Update: as mentioned in the comments below, the UK pre-order price includes free delivery, while the US equivalent may add an additional charge for the import fees).
Sega has previously confirmed that stock for the Mega Drive Mini 2 will be low, stating that numbers are roughly one-tenth that of the first Mega Drive Mini console; so if you really want one, we'd advise you to be quick about it!
A product link will be available at the bottom of this page, but if you're interested in where to pre-order the console in other regions, you can check out our pre-order guide. For information on all of the games confirmed to feature on the console, head over to our full breakdown for all the details.

done
excited!
also, price includes delivery. The US price does NOT include shipping (from Japan)
It has a slider power instead of press button? And doesnt come with AC adapter? No thanks especially not for that money
Can’t justify that price unfortunately. Good for anyone who can though! Enjoy
I want it but…damn
Looks like it only comes with one game pad...
@Dimey Ah, that's good to know. I've updated the article with this little nugget of information; thanks!
Noice, pre-ordered. Wonder if Amazon will just keep the pre-orders open indefinitely rather than cut them off after a certain number though.
100 quid? You might as well but the megadrive collection on PS4 for much more cheaper 🤷♀️
@prismt that's a very confusing sentence haha - condone means you approve??
@huyi does it come with a free PS4?
@Dimey I think pretty much almost everyone has a PS4 by now? If you are too cheap to buy a PS4 you can even get it on pc or the megadrive collection on PS3, point is there are many more cheaper options than this smdh
Seeing what games the JAP version has over this one just makes me not want it.
Got a link for play-asia?
Amazon exclusive. Yuck. Exclusives suck.
£104?!? Yuck.
No power adapter?!? Yuck.
Can I afford it. Fortunately yes. Am I ordering - no. I own all the mini consoles but this one is pretty much doing everything wrong and is a very cynical release.
The whole industry is stumbling towards a low effort high price model and it wasn’t always that way. It’s a fairly recent thing.
The JAP version game list isn’t helping matters.
Good luck if this ticks your boxes. I would say I’ll pick it up cheaper down the road but they’ve ramped up scarcity to charge more. Grubby little beasts.
@huyi or maybe get the collection on switch? As most people here probably have one of them and no need to buy another console...
Be quick, supplies will be low!
and the sales...
Nabbed one! Very excited! These are gonna go quick!
Got mine. Phew! No need to worry about missing it. I absolutely adore these mini retro consoles.
For folks who are pumped, that's awesome! But I don't want to support the idea of sequel micro consoles from the same console's generation. Were it a horrendous-looking Genesis with a 32X and Sega CD attachment with nothing on it but 32X and Sega CD games, that would really be something, but they had their chance with Genesis games last time. While some Sega CD titles are present here, it's not enough to make me part with 100 bucks. Sega should look into some kind of emulated collection like Capcom's Arcade Stadium. One for Genesis, another for Dreamcast, etc. Or heck, just their stellar arcade titles
@prismt no, me being a pedant! no worries
As a 40 something sega nut who will forever regret selling his master system and megadrive, having this, my original MD mini and astro city mini scratches all of my retro sega itches. I can see why lots of folks aren't keen... I just HAD to have this. Kind of completes the set for me.
Amazon germany has it as well for 99 euros
@sleepinglion sadly as somebody who has followed them for decades, common sense decisions are never that likely!
A compilation of their own arcade games from the last 30 years would surely sell pretty well...
I just ordered on at amazon.de since the uk store will charge import and custom fees. I have about 45 days or so to decide if I will keep or cancel the preorder since amazon charges you when it sends it.
@Stocksy none of the mini's have power adaptors though, do they? and the pc engine mini was also amazon exclusive.
@belmont same here and free shipping to switzerland
@belmont it said free shipping when i ordered on amazon.co.uk.
have ordered from japan via amazon before and they have never added additional costs, and it arrived so so quickly from kyoto I think amazon must have some sort of standing arrangement with customs??
@Anguspuss 109 euros plus 10 euros for shipping in Greece... It really is expensive but I couldn't resist...
@Dimey Oh I did not know it. You are right, seems amazon always shows the full price... I simply stopped buying from amazon.co.uk after the Brexit! Still due to currency conversion to euro I think it was a bit cheaper to order from a eurozone country.
Some other shops show the pricing for me after I try to check out. I remember wanting to buy a 60 euro Anbernic handheld but after shipping, import, customs etc. it ended up about 110 euros and I did not buy it.
@belmont 99 euros and we get the tax back here and free shipping. Plus swiss franc is strong so even better
@belmont you may be right, and smart thinking on your part! tbh, long as I get it, that's all i care about
I pre ordered mine for the US a little while back. I’m definitely excited for it as I still play the 1st mini every now and then along with Turbo Grafx Mini. I admit the CD games are definitely disappointing as the Japanese version as a total of 20 whereas we only get 12. People are mostly upset with the inclusion of Popful Mail and the Lunar games but I really wanted Earthworm Jim CD so badly. But still a nice roster of games although I would definitely take out Clay Fighter and the Ooze.
@shonenjump86 yep, the pc engine / turbografx mini still gets a lot of play, so many good shooters!
all about the new, smoother frame rate, scaling space harrier 2 for me! original space harrier arcade is my fave ever game, so this was a huge lure to me
@Dimey The Genesis Mini 2 listing says it comes with a power adapter, which is weird to me considering how neither of the Mega Drive Mini 2s come with one.
Managed to pre order mine.
@Anguspuss In Greece we have since the good old days of the euro crisis 24% vat in most goods and only companies do not pay vat for some goods. I have heard cases from people that have small companies buying PS5 for the "company" without paying vat! The situation is crazy. In mobile phone bills we have 24% vat + another 12% on top of it! Same for tv channels with subscription.
@Dimey Thats what I care about too if I am honest. I don't even care if the box is in German language which I can't read!
As for the charger stuff I have the European versions of NES Classic, SNES Classic, PlayStation Classic and Mega Drive Mini and NEITHER of them has a charger only a generic micro USB cable.
@Dimey I feel like when they do try, they do it wrong. There was a nice collection of 3D classics from Sega on the 3DS. A few arcade gems in there for sure. But the choices weren't their most popular titles. Same with the Sega Ages on Switch. Some heavy hitters, and some really bizarre choices, too, while once again leaving out their biggies. Arcade1UP has made one Sega cab and for their 1st outing they chose Golden Axe and its sequel, the Revenge of Death Adder, to headline, which were both overlooked on those collections I mentioned. It's almost like they're choosing what to do by throwing darts at an idea board
@belmont im lucky i can actually walk over the border to germany spend 350 euros and then get all the tax back . But here is switzerland beer and wine okay but everything else stupid expensive
As much as I’d love it (as the Mega Drive 2 was my first console and it’s still working to this day) I’m not getting this:
1) £105? The last one was £80, which wasn’t bad considering it came with 2 controllers. However the escalation in price for mini consoles kind of defeats the ‘novelty item price’ idea (the NES mini was £50 which is just at that level of ‘oh, go on then!’).
2) A switch not a power button? It’s petty but that’s not what the PAL MD 2 had. Considering the level of authenticity they went with on the first model (down to removable parts and movable volume control) this is a bit of a let down.
3) No adapter? Well, the first model didn’t come with one either, just a USB cable to plug into your tv. Not a deal breaker but at that price?
Pity, for £80 I probably would have got it for pure nostalgia…
Grabbed it. Thanks, NLife
@Dimey There is the Astro City Mini, but I recall it was fairly pricey.
And also not a good sign to hear that Quartet had a major emulation bug on the Mini, which the MAME team figured out only a few months after release, IIRC.
I've preordered, got between now and then to decide if I actually want it and I may yet refund it. Or I might flog it on eBay depending on prices...
@sleepinglion
That 3D collection really annoyed me. I wanted Power Drift but it was only available on the full collection. By then I’d already bought Sonic and Galaxy Force which were also on the collection. Sega are baffling.
@KingMike I imported the astro city from Japan, and Quartet runs fine for me? not played it all the way through though.
The price is not right.
@electrolite77 I'm sorry we have to feel each other's pain. I'd say Nintendo, at times, isn't much better. They tried their own line of 3D Classics on the 3DS and led with heavy hitter Urban Champion. And they gave Kid Icarus backgrounds so they could do that one. No Super Mario, no Zelda, nothing that could really have jumpstarted the line
Anyone know when this will be available in Canada? I tried ordering from Amazon US but it can't be shipped to Canada ...
@sleepinglion
Yep, similar strangeness. Nintendo gave up on that 3D classics line way too quickly.
@electrolite77 Nintendo didn't gave up, they stop making em when they lose that 3D lawsuit file against them which result in them just going all 2D instead. This lawsuit eventually kill any interest they had with the 3D line going forward. If people want something interesting then they need to stop being dick and not sue for nonsense reason otherwise in the end we all lose. We were going to get a Legend of Zelda 3D and a Punch-Out 3D later on too but that lawsuit crush any chance of that ever happening.
@electrolite77 I would have at least thrown Rad Racer in there, their NES attempt at 3D (with included glasses). Or maybe some Virtual Boy titles. But Urban Champion?
Big thanks for the heads up, I was at work the whole day so I kind of missed this, hopefully I wasn't too late, that Shining Force CD is quite juicy, first of these Mini consoles for me that is of interest for that game alone.
For all those people who complains about the price, are you guys aware that it comes with 20 more games than the first Mega Drive Mini? That one cost 80 when it was released. It seems reasonable.
@Moroboshi876 but how come the US gets it for 99.99 and uk 104.99?
@pjzx our price includes free shipping etc. their price excludes shipping and taxes, from Japan. prob works out fairly close after all that.
Still available.... Might not be in such short demand after all!
@Dimey The reported bug is that on level 15, some platforms fail to function, making the game "unfinishable", at least in the way designed (I'm not too familiar with it, so I don't know if damage-boosting or glitches would solve it).
"Finishable" as in playing until the point the game reportedly loops eventually.
@sleepinglion Rad Racer was a Square game. Though I guess they could have done third-party, I remember Mega Man 2 was one of the names thrown around in the launch announcement.
Surprised it’s not sold out yet
I preordered the Jpn version and overall I’m happy with its game selection. Popful Mail looked cool, it will be nice to try the Lunar games, and call me crazy but that Sumo vs fighting game looks like it could be wacky fun. I will miss having Super Outrun though.
I’m a Japanese speaker but still it will be interesting to see how many games (if any) will have the English localized versions present, like on the MD Mini 1.
Has anyone else noticed the Mega Drive Mini 2 only comes with ONE control pad, not two like the previous Mega Drive Mini? The Mini 2 comes with the six button pad and not the three button pad.
I actually didn’t realise it was only 1 pad but not a deal breaker for me anyway
The Megadrive collection on the switch is far better than what they are offering on this console. Mega CD wasn't the greatest. I've only played a few decent games on the system. I suppose people will hack it to put better games on it I suppose, but it defeats the purpose of buying it as there are better devices for retro emulation.
Pre ordered mine not sure why it comes with a switch rather than a button and at that price 2 controllers would of been nice. Plus why Streets of Rage 1 over the messy but still fun Streets of Rage 3 and why not throw Alien Storm on there and maybe even Mortal Kombat. Lineup is average compared to the Mega Drive 1 mini.
Why is it only on amazon I wouldn't buy anything from amazon.
If you want to give money to charity when buying on Amazon, use https://smile.amazon.co.uk/. Choose a charity, and every time you order something from them, they'll donate a tiny amount to your chosen charity.
Hey a place that ships to Australia.
For £65, absolutely. £105, yer having a laugh.
Whilst it took longer than I expected, it’s now sold out !
@Olliemar28 @lemonjellydude I've been keeping an eye on it, I thought it would sell out sooner too!
@RainbowGazelle Amazon Smile is good
Pre-ordered I'm looking forward to this.
Dammit I think I missed it!
@sleepinglion Urban Champion is made by Shigeru Miyamoto, my guess is that he wanted to try 3D on the game to test out the glassless 3D feature of the 3DS on his old game.
Took just over a day to sell out. Not sure if this is going to be scalped or not. Probably the people who want to buy it have and only a couple missed out, or it's not been widely advertised due to numbers and may have a cult following later on...
@Moroboshi876 Yeap not only will it comes with over 60 games but some of the returning games like Space Harrier II came bundle with the first game and is now running at a smooth 30fps thanks to the updated hardware specs instead of the awful 15fps of the original which was on the Sega Genesis Mini 1 and AtGames Sega Genesis HD.
Remember, the Astro City Mini launched in the UK at £140. Now look at what it sells for.
Spoiler Alert....
£95 on Amazon, TheGameCollection.
Bet this can be had cheaper down the line.
This won’t be reduced in price, it’s sold out ! It’s only likely to go up in price now as people will need to buy it from re-sellers. The European version is likely to be more of a collectors piece than the the US and Japanese version as we’re getting a much smaller amount
@Bunkerneath I guess there is also that option also, yes
@lemonjellydude many clones available which do the same thing this does plus more, or like I said the cheaper option with the megadrive collection, not a big deal it's sold out 🤷♀️
Just had a look and going through the Sega Store on amazon they are trying to flog the Mega Drive Mini 1 for £250
https://www.amazon.co.uk/SEGA-Mega-Drive-Electronic-Games/dp/B07NVMYB7K?ref_=ast_sto_dp
@lemonjellydude I've just looked at Amazon (7/9/22 time 21:10) in stock fella.
Thanks 😂 I had noticed it was back on sale too . Amazing how much stock there is for something so limited
Just pre-ordered mine via Amazon UK, looking forward to playing Shining Force II again after a summer hammering it in the mid 90s (stupidly I borrowed it off a friend in exchange for lending him my copy of Brian Lara, I really should have suggested a permanent swap!).
working at home today, waiting on the MD2 delivery some time in the next couple of hours.
just checked the amazon site, they didn't sell out pre-orders, you can still buy the damn things today! either stock levels were much higher than reported, or these are very unpopular!
