Developer Motion Twin has demonstrated extraordinary commitment to its excellent rogue-like dungeon crawler Dead Cells, with its upcoming 'Enter the Panchaku' update being its 30th free update. 30th! Strewth...
The update is out now for PC owners and "coming soon" to console, promising an absurd amount of new content, balancing updates, and bug fixes. Primarily, it introduces a new weapon known as 'Panchaku', which is basically two pans tied together with a piece of string. It can reflect the likes of bombs and arrows and boasts a stunning attack animation. Also, let's just be clear on this: it's two pans tied together with string. C'mon! The new update will also let you pet your pets during transition areas, which is just delightful, right?
We don't quite have a firm release date for the new update yet, but it doesn't sound like it's too far off. The full patch notes are far too extensive to list here, so be sure to head over to the official Dead Cells website to get the full lowdown. We also have a gameplay trailer, which you can view above, along with a more in-depth rundown of the new update below. Enjoy!
Will you be checking out the 'Enter the Panchaku' update when it launches on Switch? Let us know!

Just when I thought I'd finally play through a game, Dead Cells comes out with MORE FREE ***** and draws me back in 🤤
Legendary. What an incredible game.
It’s finally time to double dip and get this for switch. Love this game.
For our luck, this game won't be dying soon enough
You need only say 'pet the pets' and I'm already sold. Dead Cells is just the gift that keeps on giving isn't it? If you haven't played it yet, I'd highly recommend it: it's relatively cheap, has tons of replay value and it has some of the most engaging gameplay I've ever seen. For my first proper 'metroidvania' (though it's really in a class of it's own), it was a damn good one.
deadcells > hades let the war begin!!! muuuuuhahahha
@rex_rex Thanks for making me wish Hades got 30 DLC updates instead of...ZERO. They really missed the mark on that.
Cool news though, will have to reload the apk on my phone once this is out.
@SteamEngenius yeah, you got a fair point.. I loved hades, in some points hades is better, but gameplay wise, i'm sure dead cells is superior..
I'm hoping they do a complete physical edition once they finish adding content!
@rex_rex Hades and Dead Cells are both great, alongside Risk of Rain 2 as three consecutive roguelikes I chose as my game of the year. My ranking: Risk of Rain 2 > Hades > Dead Cells
I bought the Prisoner Edition after I bought it digitally, love this game.
I also highly recommend Skul: The Hero Slayer, a great Dead Cells like game with a unique twist, it even has the prisoner in the game!
Shame Nintendo Life refuse to acknowledge Skul exists.
@MarioBrickLayer Completely agree and feel the same! Held off buying this physical just in case!
Dude I haven’t even beat the final boss once, but ai just love coming back to this game! And they finally added the one skin I have wanted, animated prisoner.
I love Dead Cells. I've been playing it on and off since shortly after it released on Switch. I was playing it two weeks ago, just before I went on vacation. It's an amazing game, with very very generous updates that just keep coming. But surely I'm not the only one who wants Motion Twin to move on to another game, like they said they planned to be doing two years ago?
I'd just like to see what else they can do. I'm sure they have more than one game in them. Even if it's just a DC sequel, I'd prefer it to endless updates. Updates are nice, especially when they're free, but at the end of the day you're still playing Dead Cells.
Imagine if Nintendo had never never made another game after Donkey Kong, and just kept updating that one game. Think of all the games we treasure that wouldn't exist today, because they just wanted to keep making Donkey Kong better and better.
