Well, just like the Wii U - the Nintendo 3DS has also received a system firmware update today. This bumps the entire family of 3DS systems up to Version 11.16.0-48. It's another "stability" update. There have also been some other minor adjustments.
Like the Wii U update, this also happens to be the first patch for the 3DS in 2022. Here are the official patch notes, courtesy of Nintendo's support page:
Ver. 11.16.0-48U (August 29th, 2022)
Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience.
Dataminer OatmealDome has also taken a look at this update - revealing some updates to the eShop, web browser and a few other areas:
Once again, this lines up with the latest phase of the 3DS eShop shutdown, which removes the use of prepaid cards. You can learn more in the following story:

Just one nail in the coffin left 😓 I'm not ready to say goodbye.
Even the news of system stability can't change my mood on the eShop update
Sure, I will update all my four 3DS XL machines tonight.
Is it safe to update on a 3DS with CFW?
Well the hacking community is gonna take over once the 3DS and Wii U are offline for good.
Alright. I’ll wait for information as it becomes available later on.
@JoeSooper I was wondering the same thing. I doubt they cared enough to patch us pirates out. Either way I mostly play offline on my hacked 3ds. Legit 3ds is for online play if anything.
Literally putting my code in when the update happened. Bummer that we didn’t have all day to enter codes BUT thankfully Switch was linked for me to access funds through there
@Acein210 @JoeSooper Luma3DS works fine after updating BootNTR doesn't work
Oh s*** can you still add funds with a card??? I had planned on doing it later today
I'M NOT DONE YET PLEASE
@FroZtedFlakerZz Users who link their Nintendo Network ID wallet (used with Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems) with their Nintendo Account wallet (used with the Nintendo Switch family of systems) can use the shared balance to purchase content on any of these systems until March 27, 2023. After that, the balance can only be used to purchase content for the Nintendo Switch family of systems.
@pneumaticgnosis Is there a chance you or anyone else could lmk how to do that? I'm not quite sure how and I wanna get all the Ace Attorney games
@FroZtedFlakerZz Make sure your NNID is linked to your Nintendo Account, and then any money you add to your Nintendo Account should be connected to your 3DS and Wii U.
Thank u NL.
PLEASE support 3DS indies. Must suck to have a game u made to go away forever.
@Nua Thank you so much!
Things I still need to buy before March:
Super Metroid
Link’s Awakening
Attack of the Friday Monsters
Kirby’s Adventure 3D
@Serpenterror Why?
I’M NOT READY NOOOOOO-
Just nabbed some games off the eShop this weekend. A couple more games, then I'm officially done with buying 3DS games digitally....
Sad that it will be shut down but as long as you have switch linked with your account you can still get what you want on wii u or 3ds
3DS 2011 to ??????????????????, over 10 years of support is not all that bad, I got rid on mine years ago.
@johnvboy Is it 2031 now ?
Im so pissed u cant buy snes games on an og 3ds, should have done more research but u would think it wouldnt be an issue. this is on top of me having to wait for my joycons to be repaired, rough week...
Strange... I can't confirm if it works or not, but the add funds screen is still there.
EDIT: Link expired
Nooo - Nintendo Badge Arcade’s last day… 😧
@Luigi05 With us in the UK this option has been down for longer but the add funds screen is still there, it just doesn't work.
@johnvboy
Wow, I really did oversleep.
As Nintendo is closing down the 3DS eshop why on earth don't they have a huge sale on, it would probably bring in a lot of revenue for them, I mean it's not going to get them anything as from March next year, so what's it to them to do a sale of every game.
Okko that's a valid point i wonder why don't they do that :/ it's a win win situation for both the company and players strange.
Νot only Nintendo, but all the eshop games(indie games, 1st party, 3rd party) should had a huge sale before yesterday.
OK we know Nintendo has the same annoying behavior through ages but also you can see many third party and indie games that never got a sale through eshop life. Even in his last days.
Now I think it's too late.
Surely it's to disable the credit card thing, same with the Wii U
About sales, I suppose they are waiting to be closer to closing date. They are still earning 100% of the prices from the chaos right now. The end sale will be to tip on players who were still on the fence to spend their last $$
@Luigi05 Mine too. I jwoke up this morning. And it's still there. Have you try to add funds? I bet it'll give you an error for adding money.
So long eShop Add Funds button.
Am I the only one that gets nostalgic when I see that blue light? My boy isn’t completely dead yet!
I bought a new 3DS game that I'll probably never play today, for the first time in a couple of years. It's also the first time in a couple of years that I couldn't buy the thing I was trying to buy because I had to stabilize my 3DS first.
Are there any new games still being released for the 3DS or is it 100% abandoned now?
Wait what? Why bother?! My 3ds is offline anyways 🤷♀️🤷♀️
@vio at this point they are desperate to kill homebrew and everything around it, are they still going to keep this up 10 years later? Smdh
@Ooyah,
You know it only seems like a couple of years ago I was playing on the "New 3DS" with my glow in the dark Boo faceplates.
@iaLgan,
Ah my mistake, I thought it could not have been that long.
@johnvboy
Heh. It's a funny thing, you know, as I feel as if I have been alive for a thousand years. It just goes on and on.
@Ooyah,
Don't get me started on that.
@Okko I been wondering that myself because with the thing ending it soon would make sense to place a ending sale to make some quick money cash on digital games in a short amount of time for the next 6 months.
What does this mean for the update in the Nintendo 3ds xl what gonna happened to the eshop is it going to be erased ?
@JoeSooper I've heard some people are having issues but it might be people with modded 3DS's. Personally I don't think I've had any issues so far but I've been only playing Fire Emblem so the issue can be with other games.
@vio There has been new games lately.
Time to update....
I have all of the 3DS games I could ever want. As for WiiU, I’m wanting to still pick up Xenoblade X, but I know it will be coming to Switch eventually since it didn’t do anything weird with the Gamepad like StarFox.
Not sure if adding funds on your phone still works, kinda have to draw the line though on when to stop spending money in the eshop lolz, never will have enough of the eshop games. I think if I am still able to add through my phone I may try to get a hold of Kirby Blowout Blast, I have a physical copy of Starfox 3d on the way though and I am looking forward to that, played Starfox Command when I was a teenager and loved it, wish I never lost that game haha, but that and nintendogs probably caused a million scratches on my old DS touch screen lolz.
@CharlieGirl Well, it's not like all 3DS handhelds will suddenly become unplayable on Judgment Day.
@FroZtedFlake No.
@OzMikey …will be in March 2023.
@ForminaSage You're hilarious
I got excited for a minute, but no, they didn’t update the browser’s certificates; Image Share is still borked.
These consoles are typically used these days for hacking, emulation, and homebrew anyway. They are so easy to softmod that a child can do it without difficulty. Those who use these consoles without modifying them are generally collectors who enjoy buying the physical games. These consoles aren't quite aged enough for the out-of-control retro gaming communities to target either. Either way, only a small minority are still paying for digital games using the shops, to begin with. Kudos to the people who do, but I would have shut down the servers long ago if I were Nintendo. The biggest reason people are sad is solely for sentimental and nostalgic feelings. The stores stopped being stores when people treat them like databases or catalogs while resorting to other means of obtaining the games. I'm by no means anti-piracy when it concerns old games, but I think Nintendo kept these stores up long enough considering the server costs.
