Subnautica developer Unknown Worlds has revealed that a new game in the underwater survival exploration series is in "early development". (Thanks for the tip, solarwolf!)
In a job listing posted last night for the studio, it confirmed the team is looking for a Senior Narrative Designer to "help shape the next game in the Subnautica universe!" The last Subnautica game, Subnautica: Below Zero, first came out in 2019 but swim over to Switch until last year along with the first game.
The job description, linked within the Tweet, seems to be more than just breaking into the waters, as you'll be able to make your own stamp in the Subnautica world:
"Unknown Worlds is seeking a Senior Narrative Designer to join the team working on the next game in the Subnautica universe. This person will collaborate closely with the team to tell compelling, dramatic stories in the context of the game experience, while also defining the history and lore of a new science fiction world and its alien inhabitants. This person has a unique opportunity to join the team early in development and help establish the narrative direction for a beloved franchise."
Late last year, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) owner Krafton acquired Unknown Worlds, however the studio has continued to operate independently.
There were almost five years between the first two Subnautica games, so we're likely a ways off from seeing this one, but this is still exciting news for fans of this unique series.

Always up for some more Subnautica. Such a fun underwater horror.
First game was amazing but Below zero... not so much. I loved the fact that the player in 1 does not know absolutely anything. He has to discover everything on his own, collecting pieces of information like a puzzle while trying to survive and exploring growing depths. Below zero has like 3 useless storylines with no impact on the player and the main character who is supposed to be a scientist, acts very dumb and there is no trace of scientist behaviour. Plus part of the game happens on the ground in the snowy maze where nobody can see anything through the weather, very annoying.
First game was such an amazing experience! I wish I could play it for the first time again.
Fish phobia is a thing right? Because if so it stops me from playing these amazing games!
I've put 25 hours or so into the first game and I love it but I also find it way too terrifying to make any more meaningful progress. Even the slightest scare and it's straight back to the Safe Shallows for me. Unlikely that I'll ever bring myself to finish it and play Below Zero.
The two Subnautica games were my most played Switch games (along with Skyward Sword) last year. These quickly became some of my favorite games of all time. Once I built my first Seamoth, I was hooked. Such a phenomenal series.
Just bought the dual cart from GameStop last weekend. I look forward to trying them out.
The first two were great, cant wait for this even if it will be a few years. I need to pick up the switch ports eventually.
and thanks for the shoutout
I actually own the dual pack that come with the two games!
Unfortunately I have a huge backlog.
It needs to be in grander scale than below zero, that one felt more like it should have been DLC to the first one. Still decent fun but not as great as the original.
Hopefully they make the sounds of the game similar to the first game when you are under water. The loud noise in the second game, kinda ruined the experience the first game had.
