Update [Fri 22nd Apr, 2022 02:05 BST]: It's official, Nintendo has expanded the Switch Online Sega Genesis / Mega Drive service with three more titles.
Original article [Thu 21st Apr, 2022 13:30 BST]: At the tail-end of March, the Switch Online service got 3 new games, with Earthworm Jim 2 added to the SNES collection, along with Dig Dug II and Mappy-Land for the NES. Prior to this, we reported that new games might be on the way thanks to some scheduled maintenance for the SNES and NES apps. Well, it looks like history may be repeating itself, as the SEGA Genesis / Mega Drive app is due for maintenance very soon.
According to the 'NinStatusBot' Twitter account, the SEGA Genesis / Mega Drive app will be down for scheduled maintenance on Friday 22nd April from 00:55 UTC to 02:00 UTC.
Now, it's not guaranteed that this maintenance will result in new games being added to the service, but this usually occurs when new titles are introduced, so the odds may well be in our favour.
Last time the SEGA Genesis / Mega Drive app received new games was on March 17th, with three classics added to the service: Alien Soldier, Light Crusader, and Super Fantasy Zone. Further maintenance was scheduled and completed on April 8th, which resulted in no new games, so it's worth having this in mind and keeping any expectations in check.
Which new games would you like to see added to the service? Mortal Kombat II? Monster World IV? Be sure to let us know with a comment.

Mortal Kombat 1, 2 and ultimate 3 would be welcome additions. Any titles that are rarer to come by.
Comix Zone and Chakan the Forever Man. Time for a 90’s comic art / Sega party.
Fingers crossed for Speedball 2. Jungle Strike and Road Rash 2 would be superb too but the only legacy titles EA release now are FIFA titles for Switch.
And add button mapping because it's badly needed.
@gb_nes_gamer
Would much prefer the SNES versions of those games especially from MK2 onwards which were far superior on SNES.
So many good games to choose from... please don't be dross.
An actually decently fast rollout of new games for each NSO system?
(also, if Mortal Kombat were to come to the service, that would be the biggest u-turn in video game history: a game that Nintendo censored on their consoles for Sega to then be the cool kids and release the uncensored version, only for it to then come to a Nintendo console under the uncensored Sega version. That would be incredible)
@KindofaBigDeal I’ve read that in articles, but the gameplay being what it is, I’d be ok with either version. However, I did I only play the Mega Drive games so would be nice to see the difference.
@Fizza Lots changed since they censored that game, I don't think they would if it released now.
It would be nice, for once to get something different that hasn't been rereleased a thousand times before. How about B.O.B? Or seminal RPG Crusader of Centy/Soleil which is, whisper it, better than Link to the Past.
They should do Slap Fight, Mercs, and The Ooze. Great trio
Probably never happen but I’d love the Jurassic park games on here, I’d pick up the expansion pass for sure along with the controller. Pure nostalgia there for me
I'd love to have the Splatterhouse games on here. Frightened me terribly as a child. Just rented the third from the video store and didn't know what I was in for.
I would be down for MK I bought it for the game gear back in the day.
NSO doesn't have any pinball (even the NES game made by Nintendo isn't on NSO) so Sonic Spinball may be a good fit for the next batch.
I am 99% sure that NO Mortal Kombat games will be added to the app. If they did, the whole app would be rated M. And Nintendo does not want that.
@ozwally I was thinking the same thing!
JP and the X-men games would be awesome!!! It'll never happen, but it would be awesome if it did. I would also like Dinosaurs for Hire too.
Monster World IV !
I'd love to see Zero tolerance on here
@PBNightmare The arcade version of Splatterhouse is on Namco Museum. Great game. I also had it on the Megadrive back in the day, part 2 I believe.
I would LOVE to see something obscure from my childhood in the next round... maybe Haunting staring Polterguy or General Chaos from EA?
Pulseman, would love to play that game again.
Hopefully Home Alone, best version of the film in game form.
Rocket Knight Adventures. That's all I need.
Castle Of Illusion
Fire Shark
Gaires
Gauntlet IV
Ghouls 'n Ghosts
Prince Of Persia
Super Hang-On
Thunder Force III
I must say I was split second sceptical about getting the Switch Online controllers. But I like to own everything. … as you lot already know! I own all the different joycons save for the ***** Fort night one (no way. Dreadful game. Just a place where overworked people steal content from creative people).
Plus a full 4 Pro controllers which is nice to see lined up in the velvet drawer I keep nice game stuff in.
I was worried the mega drive controller would have that bad dpad. But it doesn’t! It’s a lot improved!!!
My favourite is the Nintendo 64 one. No one talks about that controller and I don’t know why! FYI the 64 controller: has an authentic feeling and even nearly technically identical mechanism for the analogue stick. The dpad is straight from the snes one this time. Rumble pack is present and uses an off-centre weight instead of the, godsake what are they called now, linear something or other HD rumble. The expansion port is blocked off. There’s a Home, screenshot, and R2 on the top of the unit. It can wake the console up unlike the NES and snes controllers.
The mega drive controller is great. Exactly as my younger self remembers it, well no that’s a lie as it now works better.
Why aren’t these controllers more popular with more people talking about them?!? If they’re sold out on the Official Nintendo Store then Just get them from eBay. Don’t be a baby over the prices as I know some people are want to do. Desperate to do in fact pleading to be heard about wahh wahhhhh scalpers wahhh. Man up.
@gb_nes_gamer
MK1 obviously had the blood code on Megadrive so it had a benefit there but from MK2 onwards the SNES also had blood and the better graphics and overall presentation.
Of course the best option is to release all the console versions so no one misses out. Or better yet that Arkade Kollection that has been rumoured for years finally comes out.
@Mynameishello
Man Up?! Wise up more like.
Maybe people dont want to be suckers and overspend on what are, at the end of the day, superfluous controllers that are not a requirement in any way? And also pointless if you want to play handheld.
Let's just get Ren & Stimpy: Stimpy's Invention on there, for goodness sake.
A similar discussion already had me fantasize about stuff like The Lost World, Crusader of Centy or Battletech the other week, but I do realize these games are likely a nightmare to relicense nowadays.
@Mynameishello I was generally okay with most of this comment till the support of scalping. I'm okay paying a premium for certain items, but when a scalper goes out of their way to acquire a large quantity of an item to just gouge people who want to pay MSRP... that's not "manning up" to support that. That is just being sensible to get a fair deal on something. I've lost out on buying a number of amiibo and other collectables I'd enjoy having just simply because I went "I'm not paying $200 for a figure that is sold for $20 MSRP." That is just being sensible with your money.
If I think back to the games I loved on the Megadrive, I’m pretty sure none of them will be released via Switch Online:
Micro Machines 2
Mega Bomberman
Road Rash
Wiz ‘n’ Liz
Pugsy
I don’t really care what comes since emulation is a much more accessible easy to use option for genesis games and/or pretty much all of nso in general.
@Medic_Alert We can dream, but I highly doubt it. I'm surprised they haven't been released separately as Disney Classics!
@dkxcalibur glad to see I’m not alone, was half tempted to pick up a poly mega to play them but can’t justify the cost for a few games whereas switch online is far more reasonable cost
They could had easily just throw all the games from the Sega Genesis Classics Collection, Ultimate Genesis Collection, AtGames systems, Wii Genesis Virtual Console, and Genesis Mini on there and it'll be mega good. This slow and oddly release is just lame.
Earthworm Jim 1.
What's a girl gotta do to revive Mario35!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@NinChocolate I love Mercs and have it on physical still. It's already in the Capcom Arcade Stadium though, under its Japanese name for some reason. It can be grabbed for $2.
C'mon General Chaos and/or Skitchin'!!! Who am I kidding those were EA games back in the day so we'll never see them again I can dream though.
waiting patiently for Battletoads/Double Dragon to drop for the Genesis, SNES or NES switch online library. That'll be one of the best thing ever to happen for a surprise beat'em up co-op.
Two Crude Dudes
Outrunners
C’mon Corporation! 🤞🏻
It doesn't matter too much for me because I have the original hardware and the Genesis Collection on PC and Switch. I think the Genesis Collection on PC is very worth it as most machines can run it and it contains more games than the switch version. Would have been nice to see some of the Game Gear games get put onto NSO, as I believe they're only available through 3DS Virtual Console right now. (Other than emulation, of course.)
I barely play anything on NSO, but I think it’s because the games are drip-feed so slowly at random times. If there was some sort of schedule, like two new games at the start of each month, I reckon I’d be more engaged
The BAD requires a NSO subscription to play the games not like they are on Cart.
I'll upgrade my Online Membership for Fantastic Dizzy
