Animal Crossing is one of those series that has become something of an obsession with many gamers.
Since it made its debut on the N64 back in 2001, the franchise has spanned multiple Nintendo systems and sucked away countless hours from millions of players all over the globe – but when you have to explain to a layperson what makes Animal Crossing so incredibly appealing, it's often hard to articulate.
Nintendo Life's video team – Alex, Zion and Felix – sat down recently to discuss precisely what makes Animal Crossing so compelling; is it the chilled-out atmosphere? The sheer depth of content? Or just the fact that finding oneself in constant debt to Tom Nook is surprisingly addictive?
Have a watch of the video above and let us know why you think the series is so darn brilliant by posting a comment below.

For me it is a relaxing game that is not demanding (requires too much time investment or practice any skills) in order to be fun. You can play it for a long periods of time or in small portions.
There are no losers in this game
It’s brilliant because it gave the world pigeon milk. And we could all use a little pigeon milk right about now.
For me it’s like a free to play, at some point i got really bored of the game. I still have it in my switch, but every time i try to play, i can’t play more than 4-5 minutes.
I still don't get it, sorry. For me, games are not meant to feel like chores and if I'm missing the point here, I don't really care. Glad people like these types of games because I'm not one of them. Also I just cannot stand the sound design of Animal Crossing and I really dislike the "Animalize" speech.
The game was too slow and uneventful for me, but I’m sure that’s exactly what most people love about it. It’s a nice change from most other games where there is almost constant pressure.
Q : Why ACNH is so much fun?
Me : Because...
1. The villagers will never moving out by them self so it was very great news for me and I can keep my favorite villagers forever.
2. I can Time Travelling easily without losing my villagers.
3. I can exploit art items / rare stuffs by Time Travelling.
4. I can makeover villager's house interior and exterior after update 2.0.0.
5. I can make better island design than ACNL.
6. The villagers talk less than previous Animal Crossing. I don't like Yada Yada Yada.
7. It's a peaceful game.
8. It's almost like The Sims games.
9. The chibi anthro animals design in ACNH looked better than before ACNL.
10. I LOVE ❤ CUTE CARTOONISH GAMES.
@Neoicelord
ACNH is NOT even a trash.
The game itself is NOT Harvest Moon or Stardew Valley clones.
@Axecon Is there an option to turn those gibberish voices off? Cause there should be
Animal Crossing is good because of it chill atmophere and huge amount of content on the game.
It is because the Nintendo Overlords told me that it is fun, so it must be true. If I do not have fun as the Overlords command, it is because I am a failure of a human being.
The Animal Crossing series is nice and cozy. That said, I'd rather play Stardew Valley, since I didn't enjoy New Horizons as much as New Leaf. shrug
It's just extremely relaxing. What more needs to be said?
@Mr_Fox Exactly that for me! It's a nice change of pace to break up other games 😌
I love the charm of the characters and the style of the world, but whenever I've bought an Animal Crossing game I've always fallen off pretty quick.
I can't really justify spending full price on one of these games anymore, and what they did to online in Horizons sounds horrific.
@Axecon
Animalese speech in ACNH version was actually sounds better than previous games if you listen it carefully.
Pretend it was like Simlish language from The Sims, you will get to used it.
I can't believe I played New Horizons almost every day since launch. This is a great game. I am about to attend my 100th K.K. Concert.
Hey I get people's dislike: I dislike other games.
But in my view, Animal Crossing is a masterpiece.
@dugan Aw that's amazing, glad you've enjoyed it so much! 🙌 Agree, I personally really love the AC series but totally understand not every game is for everyone!
@DreamlandGem
Say, how many hours have you accumulated for ACNH ?
I have accumulated 820+ hours gameplay since 27 June 2020.
@Neoicelord Haha, to be fair I've been playing Valhalla non stop recently!
Hard to say, exactly, but it's a nice change of pace from other games. I'm a weirdo who couldn't get into the series before New Horizons and now they have me into it.
@Anti-Matter Wow you've played lots! I'm just under 400 hours 😊
Played for over 300 hours over the course of the Pandemic but that's enough for me. It is very relaxing and peaceful but admittedly it can get a bit boring after a while. I would definitely recommend Animal Crossing as a stress management tool as it really can help you switch off and escape from the real world.
@IronMan30 I own new leaf and I don't understand it.
I turn it on and after wandering around for 10 minutes and turn it off.
It's a "me" thing
Since the vast majority of my 600+ hours of play accompanied the existential dread of 2020 it's actually hard for me to mentally associate the word fun to Animal Crossing. It definitely has a type of peaceful serenity though. I'll have to wait for the next animal crossing game to see if I enjoy it as an actual game as opposed to a social mechanism and escape from life.
I enjoy the fact that I can play for a minute or I can play for hours. I love the freedom to do what I want (to an extent) and if I want to take a break for a month, I wouldn't really be lost when I return.
It's relaxing and it doesn't really offer any challenge...just a chill game. When I want a challenge, I play something else that requires real effort.
Never played any entry as much as this one, just so addictive and relaxing.
On around 1600 hours now.
@MJF I know a lot of NL fans feel like you do, but me not being into NL or previous entries was also a "me" thing. I just couldn't get into the games before now for whatever reason. I can respect anyone not being into NH, fwiw.
Its not fun at all.
Yeah I've never been interested in playing an AC game for more than a couple months. The charm (and it is charming at first) wears off super quick for me. I thought AC:NH was going to be absolutely perfect for pandemic lock-in but the lack of good couch co-op ruined. Forcing everybody to stay near the island owner and limiting how much they could do just was incredibly unfun. What a terrible design decision.
Too boring game for me.
I don´t play games to relax or sleep. I play games to compete against other players.
I don't have fun watching cute graphics and virtual objects. I don't care about virtual scenarios, I just care about gameplay, and for me, this game is lacking in gameplay.
It must be good for children in the literacy stage. I'm sure my daughter will like it one day. But, I will never buy this game for myself to play.
My wife doesn't like it either, she likes non-stop action games like Binding of Isaac, Enter the Gungeun, Mario Kart 8 (Battle Mode), Twisted Metal, fighting games like Dragon Ball and Killer Instinct.
So...no Animal Crossing here.
I can see why people like the game, it's a cute relaxing world where you create a village at your own pace. But personally I found the game to be boring and it's just not my cup of tea.
Definitely not talking about the New Horizons one!
@Neoicelord
My Time at Portia needs better controls.
@Axecon
Anamalize (Animal Speak) was so much better on the GameCube
I've been hooked on Animal Crossing for twenty years and the key piece for me that places it so far above the games people compare it to like Stardew Valley is the clock. I put about a hundred hours into Stardew Valley before stopping because I felt 1/ there was nothing left worth doing and 2/ the clock runs so fast I had to keep stopping gameplay to sleep or be punished for it. This, in a game where if you don't tend your crops or relationships they fall apart and the game gets harder. Animal Crossing is so much less stressful. Which is why I have more than 1500 hours into New Horizons.
A calming sense of progress. Designing was really the strongest point of this game. Terraforming is pretty cool.
The one thing I resent about this game is how I fire up the game after some time and the chaos just puts me off. So many possibilities with what you can do means an overflowing inventory, unfinished areas of my island, letters stacking up in my inbox with items I have no room for etc.
In past games, it was a pleasure to come back and enjoy the serenity of walking around my town at night, but it feels a bit much. It's kind of sad to me that there's no way they can really tone this down in the next AC games - they know there will be a backlash if significant features are removed (look at the absence of Brewster for the first year, for instance).
@Rykdrew
And you bashed ACNH for being a peaceful game. 🙄
@Thatsalie
Your comment was not fun at all to bash ACNH for no reason.
I generally find AC quite overrated. Now and then I will have a blast, find myself getting into 'busy work' but at heart I struggle to get any kind of emotional attraction to what I am doing on the islands
I know I sound grumpy but I find my fellow residents incredibly annoying and try to avoid them
Hey guys, friendly reminder to keep the discussion civil please. It's totally okay to not be a fan of a game, but let's respect each other while talking about it. Thank you ❤❤❤
@Rykdrew That's totally valid, not every game is going to be everyone's cup of tea! I personally find it a great way in between action games to enjoy a slower & calmer pace 😊
As has been said many times before - I don't think any game in the history of the medium had such coincidental perfect timing. To be honest I think the people who had ACNH rather than the people who didn't - probably were able to cope better with lockdowns and bad tidings.
The game was and still is like meditation. I can't tell you how many reams of forum code has been wasted over the decades of gamers asking for games that "don't have a treadmill", "is played just for fun's sake", etc. This is that game. It is perfect and pure. I don't think the gaming event will ever be replicated - it felt like you were part of something good during a bad time.
Picking it up now will never have that same feeling or effect. Frankly - you either get it or you don't. If you were on the outside looking in during March/April of 2020 you will just never get it.
Great music plus Nintendo charm and silliness = great fun every time.
Aside from how easy it is to get into a routine, once you're mind really starts racing with ideas and micro goals it becomes such a time sink. Simple things like working towards house decorations, designing path and gardens around town, building personal stories with villagers, ect. NH amplified it by 1000% with outdoor decorating and nook miles alone, and there's a satisfaction at slowly chipping away at ideas you've had planned for days/week and seeing it all come together
That describes a lot of life sim games but all it takes is finding the right person to click with
New leaF is still fun to this day. But new horizons lost me after a month. When your big final update is just content from new leaf that says a lot about the game.
@stephenmunn I'm a fan of both Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley and comparing them is like comparing apples to oranges. It's interesting to hear your take on the time in Stardew Valley, as I've never had any issue with it, but I can see where you're coming from.
If anything, I have an issue with the "clock" of Animal Crossing as it's based on real life. I don't have enough time in the day to do everything I'd like on my island. And with other video games that I also want to play, I don't visit my island every day as I have to choose what to play in my more limited gaming time.
It took me some time to come to terms with the feeling of "missing out," as I rarely have the time to fully participate in events, can't always check the shops everyday, probably missed Redd and Gulliver a million times over, etc. I haven't even picked up the DLC yet because I just don't really know when I'd get to it! That all being said though, I would rather have intermittent Animal Crossing than no Animal Crossing at all.
