Whenever a new Pokémon generation is announced, one of the most exciting parts of the reveal is finding out what the new starter pocket monsters. In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, we've got the grass-type Sprigatito, the fire-type Fuecoco and the water-type Quaxly.
To celebrate this special occasion, Pokémon Sword and Shield art director James Turner has shared some adorable artwork of the new Pokémon over on social media. Here's a look:
It's unknown at this stage if Turner has been involved in the creation and design of these new 'Mon, or if has been tasked with the same duties for Generation 9.
And if you're wondering which starter is the most popular, here on Nintendo Life it appears to be the fire starter, Fuecoco - according to a poll we ran last weekend. Though, the grass-starter is a closer second. You can see what they actually look like in-game in the image above.
Which starter will you begin this new adventure with? Tell us once again down below.

Don't let this distract you from the fact that Sprigatito's eyes are entirely wonky, and are tilted differently.
Quaxly so far from I see.
@VoidofLight, it's just really trying to see its nose?
Removed - unconstructive
I’m sure they delight a lot of people, but not the types of design that float my boat
Well, it is already 9 gen... we cannot expect much anymore. I will decide after I see the final evos.
Game quality aside, I do love these designs of the pokémon quite a bit. They're adorable and they make me happy to see! If nothing else, that's the one good thing to come out of a new generation of pokémon games.
I love Jamer Turner in Pokemon honestly. The guy's designed some of the best Pokemon in the entire series (Golurk, Trevenant, Centiskorch, Polteageist, Obstagoon and even goddamn AEGISLASH just to name a few). I've always found it amazing that he was the first ever non-Japanese artist to design a Pokemon all the way back in Gen 5 with Vanilluxe, Golurk and Mandibuzz and now he was the entire art director for SwSh. He's come a long way since designing the ridiculed ice cream cone and I hope he continues on for many years to come.
Oh and for the record, I really like the ridiculed ice cream cone.
@VoidofLight I know you're a master of sarcasm at times but I really don't think the angle of a Pokemon's eyes on it's official art should be a detracting factor to how good a design is. We still have yet to see it in-game so we'll have to wait and see whether it's good or nah (and this is coming from someone who's picking Fuecoco without a doubt).
@Erigen He's the dude that has designed mostly inanimate object Pokemon, with his only real animals being the Mandibuzz line, Obstagoon line, a few Ultra Beasts, Centiskorch and partly Bruxish. Of all the Pokemon designers to throw that insult at, you probably couldn't have picked a worse one than him (then again, this feels 100% like bait).
Incidentally, Quaxly, Sprigatito and Fuecoco all make excellent swear words.
Fuecoco looks like it's not a new Pokemon, like I've seen it before. I guess that means it fits perfectly.
@Daniel36 I think I know why you think that.
(as someone who loves Totodile and Feraligatr, the fact that we have another croc starter makes me insanely happy)
@VoidofLight Darn knowing that now I can't possibly like it 😉
He is not a Pokemon designer, he is the WORST Pokemon designer. He created the Ice Cream pokemon, and he did it 3 times (it is an evolution family), he deserves no forgiveness.
The more I see that duck the more I like it.
Fuecoco is the best Pokémon.
@abdias And Ken Sugimori created like five different blob pokemon, and two separate lines where the evolution is "same pokemon but three of them"
Fuecoco all the way!
@Bret Agreed, but the ice cream alone is worse than everything bad gamefreak produced all summed up. Even the infamous sword/shield tree is way better looking than that pokemon family.
cute it's like the splatfest voting image art style
@Fizza Love Totodile! 💙
@VoidofLight So petty. Lol
@Fizza The design in game is probably good, but the eyes just bother me in the official art. It's hard for me not to notice it once I noticed.
Nick-Piky what a load of BS.
@Royalblues James Turner was the art director for gen 8(Pokémon Sword e Shield), the main art director for Pokémon is Ken Sugimori.
@Fizza he also designed one of the worst Pokémon ever(the Vaniluxe evolution family and Trubish family).
i wonder who is the art director for Gen 9? James Turner? or Ken Sugimori?
@Giancarlothomaz HOW DARE YOU DISS MY GEN 5 BOYS.
@abdias It's been 12 years and you are still incapable of getting over the idea that a magical ice stalactite monster with snow on it has the appearance of ice cream in a franchise that already has so many weird and wacky cartoon monster creatures.
It's pretty sad and ridiculous to hold such intense hatred for a single Pokemon evolutionary line.
@Royalblues Haha don’t diss Klefki. They are quite a formidable battle Pokemon against the legendaries in those Sword/Shield max raid dens.
