Genshin Impact developer MiHoYo is creating an " immersive virtual world experience" called HoYoverse.
The message was delivered by the Chinese studio's co-founder and CEO Haoyu Cai, who said that HoYoverse will be a cross-media "virtual world" that "integrates games, anime, and other diverse types of entertainment, which will provide players with a high level of freedom and immersion."
MiHoYo's most successful game so far is Genshin Impact, but it also oversees Honkai Impact 3rd and Tears of Themis, as well as 'virtual YouTuber' Lumi and the Nova Desktop App.
Here's Haoyu Cai's full statement:
Our mission in establishing HoYoverse is to create a vast and content-driven virtual world that integrates games, anime, and other diverse types of entertainment, which will provide players with a high level of freedom and immersion. We will continue to focus on long-term operation strategies, consistent technical research, and innovation in a variety of fields, including artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and pipeline construction, to ensure that sufficient content is created to meet the expectations of players worldwide for a virtual world experience.
Genshin Impact has been a huge success on mobile, PC and PlayStation 4, and while the Switch version was announced in 2020, we still don't have a release date. In fact, nothing has been said about the Nintendo version for quite some time.
Last year, a rumour circulated that the game had been delayed due to the weak nature of the Switch hardware when compared to other formats.

at this rate, I feel the Switch version is every bit as real as Silksong
Honestly, I doubt it will ever come to the Switch. The game looks good almost as much as BotW but it's very poorly optimized on the PC. The way it is now I don't think the Switch can handle it without some extreme visual downgrade
Genshin, Dangerous Driving 2, indies like Heart Forth Alicia and Lost Ruins (the latter was slated for Q4 2021) - there are a good few that have been off the radar for a long while. Fingers crossed for all of them, but the recent times make it more understandable.
I think that HoYoverse silently cancelled Nintendo Switch version of GI. Game developers usually don't like talking about cancelled games/ports. I remember Capcom with their cancelled Dead Phoenix for the Nintendo GameCube. And Deep Down... They don't like accepting their false, I guess... Oh, and another interesting example - Rockstar Games' Agent. It's funny how some people still believe that Rockstar Games will release it on PS4 or PS5.
”Still no news on the Switch version, though”
Because there is likely isn’t one? Should just give up on waiting for that port to ever happen.
I don't see this coming to Switch for so many reasons, I wish they would cancel it so every news site doesn't have to reference it.
Like many others I don't think we will see a switch version. Game is a resource hog. Very demanding game. Not even phones close to the specs of the switch can handle it and even phone more powerful struggle at times too
I will be interested in a paid version for switch, otherwise i can’t really think to download a game with no end.
Man, as a native Spanish speaker, I still can't say the company's name out loud and giggle on the inside. At least this wasn't called MiHoYoverse.
Genshin Impact cloud version confirmed.
Online needed anyway, so... "Shrug"
Can't believe people play this and spend money 💰 on it though... Grindy cashgrab as all the freemium crap
@Bobb The two platforms I primarily play on are PC and mobile, and I have a much better time with it on PC compared to mobile. I have an iPhone 8, and the game will crash every few minutes. But in all the time that I've played the game, I've only ever had it crash once on PC.
I do also have it on PS4, but I only use that for topping off my Genesis Crystals using PlayStation Store gift cards (as I don't know if I can use prepaid Apple gift cards on mobile or Visa gift cards on PC, or only my own credit card, which I am very hesitant to do).
Personally, I would love to see Genshin Impact come to the Switch, but I am not holding my breath for it.
But I highly doubt it's due to technical issues with the hardware that's holding them back from porting the game. More than likely there's some legal issue.
After all, Nintendo is very reluctant to put their characters on other platforms, especially after the CD-i debacle. And undoubtedly, if the game were to come to the Switch, we would be getting someone from the Fire Emblem or Zelda universe, which means that said character would appear on mobile, PC, and especially the PlayStation.
Likewise, Aloy from Horizon: Zero Dawn would be appearing on the Switch version, as well. So my guess is neither Nintendo nor Sony wants their characters on each other's platform.
Which means that if Genshin Impact were to come to the Switch, my guess is that miHoYo would have to create a customized server specifically for the Switch version, where Switch players can only play with other Switch players, instead of allowing crossplay and cross-progression across platforms.
Which would frankly suck, as I'm at AR 50 (and soon, will be AR 60, once I get enough Adventure EXP and clear the final Ascension Dungeon), have quite a few 5-Star characters, weapons, and Artifacts, and am trying to build my characters to tackle tougher challenges. I would hate to have to start over from scratch.
Lol. Its not even out yet for Switch.
Honestly, this is one of a few examples where I think a cloud version would make complete sense. You have to be always online to play the game and clearly they're struggling to get it to run well on the Switch, so why not bite the bullet and just run a cloud client?
@AstroTheGamosian Oh, it's poorly optimized for the phone too, but it's harder to get in the technicalities. I played it both on phone and PC, had barely any crashes, it looks gorgeous, but it takes a lot (and I mean a lot) of space, overheats a lot and takes lot of battery
So what anime does the Chinese have rights to? I wouldn't even class what animations the Chinese make as "anime" either
Honestly, by now, I don't really care all that much. Genshin was first announced for Switch before anything else (if I recall right), but even after coming to MOBILE there has been no word ever since on the Switch release. I've played some of it on my PS4 and PC, but until I hear solid news of the (if its still coming!) Switch release, Genshin news can just blow right on by me.
Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed my time with the game, and it IS a fun open world exploration adventure game...but I was very very interested in the Switch reveal way back at the beginning, and its just been dead radio silence since then on it. The Switch is my favorite and primary way to play games on (some on my PC and Xbox1X with gamepass), and that's where I would want to primarily play Genshin, too.
@HotGoomba I play the game everyday & havent spent a penny on it
@Bobb it runs great on my phone although my phone does have double the ram of the switch
@Bobb I've kinda noticed that, too, playing on PC.
The latest update said that I have over 30 GB of storage left on my hard drive, and this latest update is about half of that. Why they just can't overwrite game files to save space is beyond me.
But mostly, the overheating part of it comes when I have both the game running, and am doing a special web event on top of that. Exit out of the web event, and the computer fan isn't running as loud.
But for the battery issue, just keep the phone plugged in to charge while you play. That's how I do it. In fact, I also have an accessory with two Lightning ports that allows me to both charge my phone and use my earbuds at the same time.
@AstroTheGamosian @Would_you_kindly just to end this on a lighter note. Optimizations aside, it has some gorgeous scenery, it's a pretty game and it can be fun at your own pace. I wish multiplayer was more fleshed out and maybe I'd still be playing. I just don't think the Switch can handle it right now
And we should care about this why?
So basically vr chat
@AstroTheGamosian Then what about Fortnite? Hell, that has Aloy, not to mention Master Chief, and yet, it's on Switch, Xbox, Playstation, PC, and Mobile. I don't think it's because of legal reasons with crossover characters.
@GsPandem But no Nintendo characters. That's my point. Even if Sony, Microsoft, and others are fine with their characters appearing on rival consoles, I have yet to see Nintendo do the same. So the hang-up may not necessarily be with the likes of Sony, but Nintendo themselves.
There are a number of reasons why Genshin isn't on the Switch. Performance aside, I think Sony made a deal with MiHoYo just after the Switch announcement for the game to be PlayStation Console (Mobile and PC aside) exclusive. Sony does do a whole lot of advertising for the game, so that must of been part of the deal, in exchange for Aloy being in the game. I also have a tinfoil conspiracy that Tencent is also leaning on Nintendo not to have the game on the Switch. Short version is that MiHoYo rejected a buyout of the company by Tencent and it's success really pissed them off because of how much Genshin has made, SO FAR. Meanwhile, Tencent is helping Nintendo sell a region-exclusive Switch on the market in Mainland China. So it's tempting to think that Tencent is throwing another wrench into the lack of updates on the status of the Genshin Switch port.
@HotGoomba Virtual Girls AND Boys.
@Bobb One of the many downsides of Unity. Could also be that MiHoYo is already juggling five different ports at the same time and adding a sixth wouldn't be possible with a major patch happening every 6 weeks or so.
@SwitchVogel There's actually a cloud version of the game in the Mainland Chinese server, so once it starts rolling out to the International servers, I think we MIGHT see the Switch port be converted to a cloud version.
@Jbuggydroid Not just when its running, but also the game itself. And it's still growing in size as well.
@HammerGalladeBro Care to explain why?
@NatiaAdamo Might be best if not, but let's just say that it might evoke something naughty and immature.
Sorry, I can't get that idea out of my head.
Would like a offline Switch Cart version with updates and online updates as needed since the Switch is portable constant internet will be tricky if there is no wifi to use. SmartPhone HotSpot is no guarantee either for speed.
@Specter_of-the_OLED because people want it?
