Famitsu's Japanese chart figures are now in for the week ending 5th December, revealing that Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl have remained on top for a third consecutive week.
The two games sold another 164,580 physical copies combined in Japan last week, taking their total physical sales count to just over 1.9 million. After two weeks on the market, the titles were actually outpacing the sales set by Sword and Shield back in 2019, but as their third week comes to an end, Sword and Shield's three-week sales total of 2,023,043 leaves the Diamond and Pearl remakes playing catch up.
Elsewhere, Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain is the highest-charting new release of the week, landing in third place. It finds itself in a top ten made up entirely of Switch games – not a bad week for Nintendo, then.
Here are the top ten (first numbers are this week's estimated sales, followed by total sales):
- [NSW] Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (The Pokémon Company, 11/19/21) – 164,580 (1,915,268)
- [NSW] Mario Party Superstars (Nintendo, 10/29/21) – 40,668 (405,177)
- [NSW] Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain (Nintendo, 12/03/21) – 36,928 (New)
- [NSW] Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Nintendo, 03/20/20) – 18,640 (6,987,075)
- [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft, 06/21/18) – 18,308 (2,309,889)
- [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo, 04/28/17) – 16,160 (4,169,449)
- [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo, 12/07/18) – 14,728 (4,532,477)

- [NSW] Pokémon Sword and Shield (The Pokémon Company, 11/15/19) – 8,998 (4,215,022)
The Switch has once again locked out the top three places in the hardware charts, too, with the OLED model coming out on top. Here are this week's figures, followed by lifetime sales in brackets:
- Switch OLED Model – 99,195 (492,172)
- Switch – 53,752 (17,575,223)

Amazing week!!
Both in hardware and software fronts.
Oof didn't expect SMT V to drop from 10 top, at least so soon.
The Switch is killing it on all fronts. And it is not even Christmas yet
WOW, those are some lower than average...everything else that isint
switch console sales. They are really blowing it out of the park tho!
@iLikeUrAttitude well, for a game costing almost 100 € in Japan topping the chart and managing to stay in the top10 for three weeks is not a bad look imo
200,000+ hardware sales ..... Wow
@wanghosom Well I'm glad it sold well for a bit at least.
I think it'll be the best selling SMT game very soon.
Keep picking it up and Switch keeps knocking it down! The other systems, games I mean. 😁
Nintendo is flexing.
It's only Nintendo time.
Holy crap, that's the largest monopoly I've ever seen in these charts.
Holy crap...and this is knee deep in the holiday season??
Hopefully this will lead to even more Japanese support of Switch software coughPersona5coughcough
But seriously this is amazing. Complete Nintendomination. MS and Sony can't be ok with this...right...right?
@Anti-Matter Dude, I am fairly sure I have seen you in every article that has some connection to Pokemon recently and you normally seem to be the first one to bring up the topic of hate. Chill.
Nintendo actually stocked OLED, which is pretty surprising.
@MS7000
I was making a joke about Pokemon haters. 😜
Imagine if those haters were getting aggressive to express their hatred.
Wow.
200,000 Switches sold vs 2,000 PS5 sold.
Maybe Sony figured screw it, can't win Japan anyways, may as well abandon and ship to the US and hope for headlines leading the NDP
@Anti-Matter You need help
I betcha those people who bought Sword and Shield just bought them so they could transfer their Pokemon to Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Also nice that Switch OLED finally got the lead it deserve this week. Such disappointment for PS5, even when you combined both sales of the physical and digital edition, it still falls under the 2000 units sold mark this week.
Next gen consoles are losing, dying even. If anything Sony and Microsoft better start dropping that price for PS5 and Xbox Series soon maybe to the $200-$300 mark. Digital edition shouldn't even be $300, those at the very least should be $200, the two disc versions needs to dropped to $300 or lower. It's bad enough that any one can't find these consoles, even worst when you found one and couldn't afford it due to either its expensive MSRP, scalper price, or only available through scummy exploit or bundle.
It’s incredible how little the ps5 has sold. It can’t all be down to shortages by this point?
Did I just see Xbox Series S higher than the PS5 Digital Edition?
More XSS sold more than PS5 Digital Edition?
@JaxonH "may as well abandon and ship to the US"
The fact that I was able to get a PS5 filling out 1form online and staring at my screen for only 30 minutes makes me think you are 100% correct w/ that assessment.
Besides abandoning Japan to the Switch there's also a matter of being competitive w/ Xboxen in the US. Have to think that's thir biggest MS battle. Maybe a few countries in the EU, and UK, but I seethe US as THE battleground and MS is doing well here w/ Halo and Gamepass while Sony keeps shooting itself in the foot w/ various next gen fame upgrades.
So yeah, ship all the PS5 inventory to the US. Probably even flying some of it in now. ✈️
Now, I'm not the best analyst out there and even though I did predict next gen having a slower than usual uptake (even the hype seems a tad forced for it) and not having much of an impact on Switch sales, no way I saw it flatline so early, Have they abandoned holiday season over there?
And don't give me shortage excuses. Less than 2K is awful and someone's head needs to roll for aquiring that much! (Mind you, the entire company needs to roll if they did this on purpose.)
Wow! Demand is definitely there for the OLED model, just a case whether they have stock! Fantastic stuff, truly impressive.
@Specter_of-the_OLED
This is Japan. Handhelds have dominated the charts since the PSP and DS era.
PS5s and Series X’s are in insatiable demand in the west, especially in the US.
Japan is a lost cause for home consoles. You can’t compare the Japanese market to the US or Euro market. Totally different buying preferences.
@Ladasta
In Japan no. The home console user base there is a fraction of the size it was 20 years ago.
That’s why the comparisons dooming PS5 and Xbox aren’t applicable to Japan. Consoles bowed out to handhelds there in the 7th generation.
And it’s mainly cultural. The Japanese work longer hours than westerners. As an American, we work longer hours than most Europeans but the Japanese take a dump on us in regards to hours per week worked.
Handhelds fit their life styles. They have awesome public transport; so much so that you can live in the countryside and take a train into a city an hour away and be on time. You’re working an average of ten hours per day versus eight for Americans, less than that for Europeans. The Switch fits the Japanese lifestyle perfectly since you can take long rides on public transport. That’s when they game the most.
i can reckon Sony will release a handheld soon. Hindsight all well and good but they must of regretted not releasing a hybrid console.
@Anti-Matter I think we have different tastes in humour.
Switch sold 100x ps5. DAMMMMMN
OLED stock again + software domination gives us weeks like this
@TheRedComet love to know why you think Europeans work less than 8hours a day 😅
@GoldstoneVillas That'd put them in a difficult position since then the Series X would be by far the most powerful home console.
I think Sony/PlayStation may end up squeezed by the market in some ways this gen. By Nintendo dominating Japan and offering the only portable option. Xbox offering the Gamepass (Which really is probably them just throwing buckets of cash) , and a lot of the exclusive 3rd Party Japanese developers who typically were Sony Exclusive moving to Switch or porting to PC/Xbox and Switch depending on the game.
@AmplifyMJ Yeah, here in Sweden 8 hours per day (40 hours per week) is considered a normal full-time job. I think it's the same in a lot of European countries, but I'm not sure.
Might be that we work less hours overall though than the US? You might take into account some people with full-time employments reducing their working hours, to take care of their children or study or something else. I know a lot of people who are only working 75%, though they have full-time jobs, of course cutting their monthly salary.
Jesus Christ, those PS5 numbers...
Way to go big brain academy ! I just got the demo today and I love it! Cannot wait to get it!
@Quarth Sweden has a much higher QOL than the U.S. does and probably ever will. There's really no point to my comment other than to express jealousy. Lol
@IronMan30 There are pros and cons with most countries. But the social security is pretty good here.
You can always apply for citizenship.
