Well, Grand Theft Auto is finally on the Nintendo Switch! It's just what we always wanted, right?
The Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition (yeah, that's the full title) includes Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, as well as quite a few changes, which a lot of fans aren't best pleased about.
Check out Nintendo Life's look at the GTA: Definitive Trilogy and decide for yourselves, pals. And we mean that literally: there's no commentary, just gameplay. And we like to think the gameplay says it all.
What do you think of the Grand Theft Auto trilogy on Switch? Let us know in the comments below.

What is the "Grand Theft Oh No" referring to? Am I meant to see something bad? Looks good to me and I'm enjoying replaying these games a lot!
Rockstar Games were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.
Why are people acting like they haven't been asking for this game to be on the switch?
Sucks tho, Finally get it, and its this.
I don't get the oh no. This is exactly how I remember GTA on PS2.
I wonder what folk were actually wanting lol.
@eternalcube every console got this version
Is this pun referencing the laziness of the remasters? They both really lack creativity. Might as well have been Grand Theft Ono, just as horrible
Looks really bad. We all knew it. The few people who got it day 1 will deny it but its true.
@GrailUK GTA V with a Vice City skin.
Removed - harassment
PS2 graphics really aren't great. Now imagine strerching that image. This is what you get.
It's a old game, it's not a remake, it's a remaster. At least the gameplay is still good
@Ryu_Niiyama I know right! Now, I'm not the biggest GTA fan out there (not a fan at all tbh) but the frame rate makes the game look even more authentic to me. Waiting to see what state the physical version arrives at, but I'll play this for old times sake.
To be honest, it doesn't look that great on a series X. Tried San Andreas today on Gamepass. Quite glitchy and lots of pop in.
You kicked the can that all the snarks live in.
What did people expect…. That looks like GTA 3 with better controls to me. Exactly what I expected.
This looks sooo much better than the original!
This did not age well at all. And 60 € … not going to happen.
@GrailUK I hate GTA but these look like re-textured ps2 games to me...which they should. The individual fingers are always fun to see.
@Ryu_Niiyama Agreed. It has always been an ugly game.
Wish I could have bought these separately. Vice City is all I want.
These games certainly look their age. The Switch is capable of so much better (just look at Dying Light).
Love the tag line "Grand theft auto oh no", when it's pretty much the same remaster as all the consoles has got, all they have done is up scaled the originals with a more animated effect to hide how poor these games actually look, not big issue for anyone I am sure.
This site sure loves it's drama and clicks.
Good stuff. I like it
I thought the Switch is supposed to run circles around the PS3? Aren't these PS2 titles?
Looks like what I remember. No surprises for me.
My eyes must be old... Looks good to me. Shame they didn't do the stories games as well.
If you played the original back in the days then no reason to complain. It's like the early year 2000 kids are here complaining about the game.
I'm just going to listen Flock of Seagulls "I Ran (So Far Away)" on repeat.
These games look just as crappy as they always have.
@GrailUK Maybe actually look at the link of what people have been complaining about everywhere..?
@Arawn93 Yeah, I read that article earlier. Just made me laugh Like I said, GTA has always been ugly so a couple of minor bad graphical choices doesn't really detract from the game lol.
What an odd article, it alludes to it been poor yet gives no opinion or commentary! gameplay video looks good to me.....am I missing something?
I honestly like the look of this. It looks very nostalgic, without being ugly, hehe.
Looks like a free mod project that Rockstar decided to charge full price for.
The one glaring omission is no shadows, even the PS2 original had shadows. Baffling.
Forget the graphics/performance, I’m struggling to see what’s fun about this game. Looks boring af.
I am shocked some people in the comment section accept this for €59.99... I mean even €19.99 would be a hard swallow for how little to none effort Rockstar has put in this.
Waiting for a huge sale in my case, after seeing the gameplay this is not worth that launch price.
I have heard and seen that all platforms, have been having problems. Not just switch, so not the Switch's fault.it is rock stars for making a poor port.
@GannonBanned I don't know what you think the point of reviewing media is, but...
Looking at the PS5 vs Switch side by side video from IGN, the PS5 isn’t all that different. It’s sharper and has a load more reflections and lighting effects but models look very similar. From what I can tell at the moment, playing go on Switch, it looks a lot like the mobile ports did.
Like the fit girl from secondary school….better best forgotten!
I've been playing Vice City for an hour or so and yeah the resolution is rather low and framerate isn't brilliant but you know what? It plays better than the PS2 original and at times actually looks rather nice. Handheld certainly masks some of the issues and it looks rather good that way.
The remaster could and should have been better everywhere but it's still a very fun game that is very playable
Nah, not worth 60€, at least for me.
I have them on PC and they do not look as bad with higher Resolutions and everything set up.
Also, it doesn't cost as much Space on your Drive and modern PCs stay nearly idle by playing them.
Also the Possibility to install Mods is just a big Plus.
But, they're great Games, even with flawed Ports as these, you'll find your Fun Time with them.
Example for a modded classic GTA3

@GrailUK
A couple times today I’ve seen you replying to comments by @Ryu_Niiyama, but I can’t see her comments! Which is a shame bc I’ve always enjoyed her posts over the years. Did I ignore her inadvertently? Or maybe she ignored me??
If a kind mod or somebody could tell me how to fix this, I’d be grateful 🙇🏻♀️
I don’t get the “oh no” it looks good to me I don’t no what more people were expecting.
Looks fine to me, they look dated because...well...they're old games.
Wish I could just buy SA seperately though.
@Bret Issa joke, pal
Is there still an embargo preventing sites from commenting on this game.
Doesn't look terrible to my untrained eye but I would like to know if the controls and gameplay have been brought up to date.
I am enjoying it a lot but whatever.
@BloodNinja Rockstar is using UE4 for this remaster.
Saw some videos on the game. It runs pretty bad on Switch, but it also runs bad on other platforms too iirc
Fair enough that it’s a cheap remaster and rough around the edges. Rockstar are a little independent studio with limited funds and don’t have the resources that a company like Saber Interactive have to make a quality port or upgrade. Right?!?
On topic: really the looks of this remaster don’t bother me - the environments and cars seem much sharper than the PS2 at least. They kept the sometimes grotesque-looking characters, but hey this IS your mama’s GTA 😁
I'll probably put it on my cracked switch. I own the originals so it shouldn't really matter seeing as how they are the exact same games.
@GannonBanned Hard to tell with some of the folks 'round these parts. People say some absolutely wild stuff here
Looks fine, just as expected, I'll get it on cartridge if the extra download isn't too large.
You have Grand Theft Oh No as the tag line, but ‘Check out Nintendo Life's look at the GTA: Definitive Trilogy and decide for yourselves, pals. And we mean that literally: there's no commentary, just gameplay. And we like to think the gameplay says it all.’ in the article itself. Wee bit of a contradiction I think. Anyway, this collection is riding high on the eShop and I hope those who’ve been waiting for it enjoy it. I’d have bought it had it had the Michael Jackson tracks just to show support. Hell I bought Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective because a review I read said one of the characters was inspired by Jackson 😅 cracking game though.
You're too young to remember the ps2 era gtas.
I’m nostalgic for these games, but watching that video doesn’t make me want to go back and play them. I’d rather just play GTAV, i I need a GTA fix.
@Ryu_Niiyama (sorry for bothering you Ryu) Erm, @Teksetter is saying they cannot see your comments and wondered if you had ignored them? (It might be they have accidentally ignored you and don't know how to fix it.) But thought I would just mention it. (full disclosure - just passing on his message)
The framerate needs to be patched (dynamic resolution perhaps) and there's hardly any npcs on the road and cars are popping in like 10 feet away...?? Still getting it, but I'm just hoping it looks better in handheld mode.
Looks neat (fanheads claiming otherwise are probably the same folks who expected Odyssey graphics in 3D All-Stars) and comes with QoL features both advertised and not (GPS wasn't mentioned IIRC, but it admittedly spoiled me in the later games and I welcome it here). But the driving cams - props to NL for remembering to go through them at least once - still seem to lack any first person POV ones except for the extreme "help, they tied me headlong to the bonnet" kind.
Oh well, that means I won't be in a particular hurry to pick up what I've otherwise more or less completed long ago, although I'm still wishlisting this bunch. If I ever return to relive the chronicles of these cities (not counting LCS and VCS which I have yet to beat, of course, but those are Vita jobs), Switch is the only platform it will happen on. I knew as much as far back as when I got a free San Andreas with the Rockstar launcher and tried it on the laptop. I couldn't even import my old 90%+ saves from the old home PC, and the gamepad support was still all over the place.
@PeteW
I'm playing SA on Xbox Series X and it's great so far.
For perspective, I find the original GTA trilogy (PS2/PS4 releases) borderline unplayable today due to the horrific controls and framerates (but I can still play PS1 RE games and have no problem with those controls...), but this remaster is a VAST improvement. It still feels a little janky, but is much better and I'm enjoying playing this game again.
As for the graphics? Much better, runs smoother, and the animations are more or less the same.
I personally wouldn't buy them for full price (I rarely buy any game full price) but for $30-40 it's a no brainer if you were a fan of the original games.
I owned Vice City when it was state of the art! It's not aged well... and though I've never been that fussed about graphics, fps and the like, I think these are just too shonky to enjoy.
I'll maybe play through Saints Row 3 again instead.
No complaints here, the games look good to me! I haven't played docked yet but in portable mode on my Switch OLED, chef's kiss 💋. I'll definitely pick up a physical copy for Switch and PS5 in December!
Somehow the game looks worse than i played 10 years ago on my iphone 4.
Never understood these games. I would always play Dr1ver during that era.
Now that game was exciting! Grand Theft Auto to me is 50cent being edgy in 'my first open world' game.
Well, looks just as boring as I remember it, but for a PS2 remaster it looks OK to me... way too expensive, though.
Vice city doesn’t look to have aged well. Looking forward to playing San Andreas again, but will wait for a sale. Got a feeling we won’t have to wait long.
Looks how I remember the PS2/Xbox games looking. Which is to say, it looks a lot better than those games did.
Edit: As others have said, I'll get this on discount. I doubt we'll have to wait too long for that to happen.
Wait is it remastered? Idk just looks like the original games. What am I missing
@DumbElder Now Driver was amazing! I played the survival mode the most (although the random tyre blow outs in 3 drove me up the wall!) I never understood GTA 3's success due to their being much better third person games and much better driving games. I guess folk just like to drive around in cars with a radio on (hence the disappointement of tracks being omitted.)
These old ports remasters are bad optimised even on PS5. Why there's no release of GTA IV and V on Switch?
@johnvboy and aren't we suckers for taking the bait?
Wouldn't a simplified remaster work just fine?
Like just make it 1080/4K, run at 60 FPS and call it a day.
Would have sold just as much.
@IronMan30 Bill Hicks rocks.
🤘❤️🤘
@Godlike_Virus yep, I still crack up at his sets. He is probably one of the top comedians of all time.
@GrailUK Howdy, that didn’t pop up in my notifications. I went hard on the ignore button over the past six months (perhaps a year?) because of all of the arguments jumping off here and I ignore and block pretty quickly now because I had a user freak out because I had him on ignore for years (and that made me really uncomfortable) so I’m almost in stealth mode around here now. (I’m at the point that the comments sections are just for my one-liners or for me to think out loud. I only really talk to others in the forums. I’m too introverted for all the drama around here.) I don’t think he and I have clashed so I’ll take him off the list. I only blocked him to keep myself from getting drawn into a discussion (we would have been on opposing sides and it wasn’t gaming related. ) I didn’t want to join but would have felt compelled to.
Edit: after further consideration I shouldn’t be pressured into changing my block list. I will keep my list as is.
It looks pretty much as expected. But at full price it’s an easy No
I wasn't expecting a full remake from the ground up, and no-one should have been. In fact, all I was expecting was the original PC versions (essentially a far smoother version of the PS2/Xbox games, but able to run at higher resolutions) patched to have 16x9, with some new default shaders added for slightly fancier shadows and lighting. That would have been the "easiest" and "laziest" way to do this, but the results would have been 10x better than what they've done and I bet they'd be getting a lot less complaints.
(and yes obviously I know that a Switch can't just natively run PC code but the assets at the very least could have been used, and the amount of simple "lets stick an old PC game on Switch as a budget download with zero changes" games around would imply to me that it certainly would have been easier than trying to remake something cheaply in Unreal.)
The low poly models (especially on the characters) looked significantly better than these. Its almost as if they were upscaled with AI that made some weird mistakes. The old textures looked good on the low poly models they were designed for, but weird and derpy when smoothly stretched over more rounded models.
This still looks perfectly playable and I may well pick it up to play handheld, definitely if there is a sale on the digital version at some point. But its far from "definitive", sadly, and won't be my "go to" way to play these games.
For me, the janky character models only really look bad in the cutscenes. The things that actually put me off are the lack of a full version on the cartridge (I like to know I can play my games a decade down the line when servers have been turned off!) and the butchering of the Soundtracks (which I know is probably not Rockstar's fault, but still really damages the recreation of original memories).
@Teksetter nope that was me. I’ve no issue with you in general but I’ve been doing peacekeeping sweeps and everyone on my ignore list is also blocked for peace on both sides. See my response to Grail.
@Ryu_Niiyama Hey no probs. You can always block him again if they cause trouble O.< (And honestly, you never have to explain yourself to me!) Oh, and thanks for not blocking me lol..
Been playing GTA SA since 9am CST and for those who cant see it in this video, the textures are awful, clipping issues abound, terrible character faces, the audio sounds like it was recorded on a tape machine, draw distance issues as well as disappearing pedestrians and cars, frame rate drops at high speeds. Im old enough to have played all these games when they first came out and wasn’t expecting them to look like a ps5 game at all, but it looks as if the switch is struggling to run ps2 era games. Sloppy port really disappointed.
@YesHaveSome Thx for the headsup!
Weren't they supposed to be sold separately from each other?
I just watched PS VS Switch. The Switch version looks like garbage. Bad textures, low res and complete missing effects.
This is when an Unreal Engine 4 game is ported to a Switch.
I think they look great, they finally look like the characters from the box art, I’m glad they didn’t get crazy realistic with the games.
@GrailUK Aww come on Grail y u do dis to meeeee?
deep breath ok, so I can tell you are joking/ being lighthearted but I am compelled to clarify to prevent miscommunication. He wasn’t a bother, I just like to sidestep situations that can become emotionally charged (unless they are about games) because I find it draining/counterproductive and for safety. And you are super chill. I think I’ve only ever seen you talk about games; you usually don’t weigh in on the meltdowns. I gotta say though I love the block feature otherwise.
Tell me you never played these games without telling me you never played these games
@Scapetti There are a lot of graphical issues. But worst of all is the characters in the original were horribly detailed polygon-wise, but the textures gave them a lot of personality. The new high-poly count characters look more like generic NPCs.
@Ryu_Niiyama Hey, I'm just a guy that realises I'm not going to save the world on a Nintendo site. Have a lovely day / evening
@GrailUK THANK YOU! And you have a great one as well!
@Ryu_Niiyama
Thank you for the reply and @GrailUK thank you for proctoring. At least now I know what was going on. I wouldn’t have even noticed except I usually enjoy your comments, and then poof! They were gone.
I apologize if I’ve ever said anything untoward! I get in my crabby moods but really I usually avoid confrontation and I think I’ve been well-behaved here overall. I’ve never even blocked anybody and didn’t know it worked like that!
Anyway, feel free to re-block if ever you prefer.
Not that I’d expect anyone here to know, but it’s she/her pronouns for me 😊
@Teksetter I'll be honest, I kept typing he (then editing for they). Ahem. Sorry.
@nmanifold There are shadows at day but not at night it seems.
also the ps2 had stensiled shadows not the prettiest thing. The character shadows weren't even present in the pc version which also had some effect missing wich were all later modded/patched back in with the silentpatch.
@khululy Could it be that the street lights eliminate them?
Honestly, not as bad as I expected, but still not $60. $30 max. At the very least they run better than the originals. But it's obvious Rockstar tried to shoehorn the code into UE4 and let the engine take over the model smoothing and other things. In more capable hands, or perhaps more time, it could have been really better. Also, I don't expect post-release improvements from Rockstar on a tribute game that's not going to bring in Online money, so this might be as good as it gets.
My kids would love it - seeing as how they play the ever loving poop out of Goat Simulator on the Switch.
@GrailUK Haha no worries. I’m an old trans gal and sadly don’t “pass” very well bc of my looks, voice, and (doubtless) how I type.
I’ve got thick skin. 😇
But like Ryu mentioned, I do jump into non-gaming arguments at times! I’m no saint.
Anyway, thanks again and see you around the forums!
So can anyone break down the controls
I’m playing old school vice city on my PlayStation currently and the controls were not great and awkward…and the movement of the car and person not great as well… specially on gta3.
Anyways can anyone confirm that it has the same layout as gta5 for controls (across all games). And is the games movements more fluid like gta 5 for driving? I don’t care if the cars looks like the cybertruck and the people in the game do as well. As long as it’s smooth crusin and controls this will be a must own. GTA on a Nintendo people (remade fresher)…. Like I laugh out loud not lol but actually laugh out loud at the people who think this is trash without playing based off of how it looks. Didn’t your parents ever teach you not to judge a book by it’s cover(you’re all gonna age too someday).
These games are all epic in there own right… but I’m passing up on the flashier PS5 version for this on the switch if it has greatly improved controls and is smooth driving… I can go without the reflections being crazy detailed as long as it’s GTA in my hands and plays good… winning
@Teksetter @Ryu_Niiyama @GrailUK Absolutely none of my business but I'm sleep deprived and stressed, and just felt compelled to say that you guys are very sweet and its awesome to see some emotional honesty and kindness in a post likely to be filled with so much negativity. Strangely moved 😭
@GrailUK that, or the shadowcasting 'lightsource' of the sun is turned off at night time and headlight and street lights are not shadow casting light sources.
A complaint I do have is the lack of grass, even the ps2 version had grass.. like blades of greass sorta well fuzzy things that were supposed to resemble grass.
@samuelvictor I had to keep scrolling to see if it was all sorted. Ha. I like how it played out. Nice to see.
@Gwynbleidd remaster is the correct term. The Spyro and Crash games were remakes.
I think it looks good/acceptable. No complaints.
@samuelvictor
Haha omg I started to read your comment and braced myself thinking I was about to get flamed for going WAY off topic here.
But thank you! I feel redeemed. 😅
Overall I think the community has been decent and kind here. You went above and beyond though!
I just watched the first 2 minutes of the video. GTA3 looks insane! In the best way possible. I’m gonna fire it up… the old one right now. I do not ever remember a lock on like that or if there was it was slow or just I was to young to learn to care to learn the controls perhaps cuz I just wanted to blow stuff up with cheat codes.
That looks on point… I’m gonna give the three games a good go of the old trilogy while waiting for the physical copies to come out. Lol the first 2 min of a switch version has me sold. That looks buttery smooth and amazing. I’m excited. I bet rockstars been working on this since the switch came out… loved L.A. on the switch (I should finish it). This just looks amazing really. I can tell the controls are gta5 just by watching someone else play 😂 so that answers that (if ya don’t know go try the old like I’m gonna right now again).
Between this trilogy and Tony hawk 1&2 and so many other games pshhhhhh……. I remember Wii U days and wii days and cube and 64 and super and opening the OG on Xmas one year. This hardware gen of Nintendo will go down as the best ever for a long time. People complaining… but did ya try it? Lol… I should be getting paid 😂
I read articles of people wondering what Nintendo’s next console will be…. I don’t care if GTA is butter pshhhh game over. We are getting remakes of the best games ever…… in our hands on a Nintendo. It’s an amazing time to be a gamer… I do wish the games were 100% playable out the box though ya know. Ain’t nobody got time to dig out slow ass WiFi in the future. The whole game should be on a cart… and if that means a larger cart well suck it up and foot that cost rockstar lol. It would cost one hour of shark card profits really lol.
Anyways off I go to gta 3 world
Where is a mortal kombat trilogy now… all on one cart please cuz that file size would be like a gig or two…. Still some kinda day one patch ha. Nobody’s ever happy 😂 everything needs UPGRADEs…..how’s upgrades name spelled in Idiocracy.
I honestly don’t think rockstar is gonna release crap…. And I’d bet money that this game was made for the switch when some of us shouted for it years ago and ported to the other systems and enhanced because why the heck not make more if ya can when ya remake something. Nintendo usually gets the short end but I bet this might be amazing… Ha anyways I can’t wait to play this next month but the first bit of gta 3 looks legit if you can see beyond the physical (looks great).
Looks like brushed up PS2 graphics and gameplay. Just what the doctor ordered.
We’ve played these games 20 years ago on an air fryer and people are complaining. Did did you expect it to look like GTA V? Having played the originals they look way better, still has the same baked in bugs and hand, but just as fun.
I've been playing GTA 3 on Switch and I'm several missions in. Looks great, some minor frame hiccups when there's a lot of cars on screen, but nothing too bad. Also had a car pop in, but only happened once. Other than those minor issues, plays and looks good. Just so cool to finally have these games on a Nintendo platform.
I just finished watching the video before I play GTA 3 old school version. I’m pretty jealous that I have to wait now for the physical(but I get that old Christmas feeling and that’s nice). This (if as smooth as it looks controls wise) old graphics aside…. This might be one of the most special games to ever grace a Nintendo. Seriously this trilogy is like the ying to my Zelda snes 64 cube yang. There was no music even in that video… cruzin down the street in my 64’ ……Pshhhhh. I would spend hours just driving the roads in vice city Jammin out. If this game came out 3 years ago it would never be on a switch and so many people would be upset. After watching that video of gameplay I think rockstar saw the potential of the switch… and I think this game was made because of the switch and is gonna be a gem. Seriously 10 years ago anyone ever think a legit GTA game would be on a Nintendo system…. Just for the rating and content alone. This collection is that of the Zelda ones we wish for and the Mario ones we got. I got a special feeling about it lol. And FYI… in games back in the day people and cars vanish sometimes haha oh well. It’s worth it for the soundtrack alone. Since it’s all not on a card I would think rockstar should find a way to get all songs added eventually lol. Naw great songs missing really but pshhhhh looking forward to this.
@Krysus
Exactly what I was thinking. Sale and patched.
@Scollurio they was never gonna sell individually as majority of customers would ignore the first two and just by San Andreas.
Also these games looked real life back then not cartoony to my world as a child. like some people complaining about the graphics… you’ll never understand and that’s cool…Your parents and grandparents lost there collective minds over how realistic these games are haha. The more you know 💫
I still think one reason gta 6 is not a thing yet is because it’s too real ha.
Maybe Nintendo will get lucky and get gta6 watered down edition exclusive for a year to prepare the world for the next gen version to drop a year later. Unlikely but hey… not the worst idea huh rockstar?
While I play the old gta3 version on new hardware I’m thankful I got headphones…. Then I remembered that out of the blue like the wild magicians that they are Nintendo somehow made Bluetooth appear out of thin air on the switches. I think if your giving this game a go that’s gonna be choice. I’m loving my 10 year old version or however old it is…. But handheld with a nice Bluetooth headset is gonna be amazing even if it was this version lol. If it looks even slightly better I’d be happy lol these games are amazing and I’m playing the old ones.
What button is drive and reverse on switch?
On the old original PlayStation trilogy version X is drive square is reverse. Also I noticed you can only look the directions the car is heading. I can not use the right analog to anticipate turns and look up down right left.
In gta 5 you can your right stick and look down roads and up and down.
So yeah on switch is drive a right trigger and reverse an left trigger and can you look around with the right analog?
This was on my radar before seeing footage of the trilogy, as I haven't played these GTA games, and now I want to have the experience on my Switch. I'm not sure what I was suppose to see that was awful.
@Nin10doh I think it looks great but for a 20 year old game this is poorly optimized. How does it preform worse with frametate dips everywhere. Why does it have horrible pop in on hardware that is 20 years more advanced. Why are the streets empty of npcs? Why do some of the character models have grossly misproportioned bodies and limbs? The fact that it performs worse after 20 years of advanced specs is what bothers me
I’ll wait for an ironing out until I grab this one. Saw a review on YouTube already and it isn’t looking great but I’m still excited to play it once it is completely done. I’m absolutely positive rockstar will bring it to its best possible state fairly quickly.
Just played a couple hours gta san andreas on Xbox series s and it’s crappy for nostalgia it’s ok but I have way better games to play right now, it’s going down the recycle bin . Forza horizon 5 is much more fun to play and it looks awesome.
The frame drops are disturbing at times when there's a lot going on screen. I don't mind the graphics and gameplay and stuff but if they could fix the frame drop and maintain some consistency with it, it's a decent buy for the holidays
It doesn’t look bad.
People tend to forget that these games were not graphics powerhouses in their hey day on PS2. Visually speaking they were… “Ok” at best.
Metal Gear Solid 2, a very early PS2 release, had far more pleasing visuals than any of the PS2 GTA games.
But it was fine and no one cared. Because it was the scope of the game world that really impressed. Not the graphics.
I'm kind of at a loss to the purpose of this article; maybe innuendo isn't the best substitute for an aim/purpose?
Comparison footage would have allowed us to cast criticism on a supposed inferior port... raw footage of a (widely understood to be) antiquated game hardly seems like a watershed moment.
@samuelvictor Aww.
"And we like to think the gameplay says it all."
Incorrect.
Hence journalism.
@TheRedComet
This is a great point. This released around. The same time as Gran Turismo 3, Jak and Daxter, MGS2 and Devil May Cry. She mues was already out on DC. It was never a great looking game.
@Bizzyb Don’t get me wrong. It’s unacceptable for a company to put out such shotty work. It runs terribly on every single platform, which goes far beyond the “lazy devs” this is just blatantly having money as their end goal, not putting out a decent remaster for games that redefined the gaming industry.
I don't mind the 25 fps, that's what it was originally running on the PS2 when the games were first released, so I'm not surprised by that. It's the overall poorer quality when compared to those same originals is what gets me. Pop in happened on the PS2 as well, graphical glitches, however did not. Even for a remaster it shouldn't be worse than the originals in this regard.
Looks like an N64 game. Where the hell is GTA5?
The games run like crap. Waste of money to me
I think it looks great. What did people expect? It's a remaster, not a remake. I know a handful of people who have brought this on Switch and are loving it. Don't forget, GTA V on PS4 doesn't hit 30fps!
Can't wait to get my physical copy in December.
It almost looks as if they've taken a 20 year old game and slightly updated the visuals and controls.
This is what happens when the masses think remasters for full price is super cool n awesome!!!
Enjoy the future of gaming...games from 10-30 years ago!
@PushMyGran1986 PS2 also produced a couple of games with nice graphics. They still look great as a remaster just because of the higher resolution (Final Fantasy X). The GTA games on PS2 were never nice to look at, the graphics were weak and out of date in their time. Just see games like Shenmue on Dreamcast from 1999! GTA on PS2 was never graphically impressive, especially with the character models. Of course, when it came to the open world, you still had to make technical compromises. And you can see that, then as now!
If you upscale garbage, it still looks like garbage. These games have never looked good but they kept or have improved the gamplay experience which is what truly counts (stuff like UI redesigns and restarting missions which is very appreciated) .
Looks pretty bad ngl. Jeez
Character models look pretty rough, but I'll be honest I never played Grand Theft Auto for the characters, so that alone isn't a deal breaker.
