It's fair to say that when the cast for the upcoming Super Mario Movie was revealed it led to a lot of chatter online. For one thing, it'll be strange that a series of characters from a fantastical Nintendo world will have the voices of some of Hollywood's biggest stars; it's sure going to be intriguing when the film lands in the Holiday season of 2022.
One of the surprise casting decisions was Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, which naturally means we can expect DK to have a decent amount to say. The most cinematic the character has been in recent-ish history is some outrage at bananas being stolen, so a talking version of the iconic character will be quite a thing.
If a report from Giant Freakin Robot turns out to be right, then we may get a lot more of Seth Rogan as DK. The pop culture site is reporting that Rogan is signed up for a solo DK movie to come after Mario's debut. If accurate it would be 2023 at the earliest before it emerges, and goodness know what other Kongs would be drafted in - Cranky Kong, voiced by Fred Armisen, is also cast for the Super Mario Movie.
Also of note, this isn't the first time there's been noise about a DK project along these lines, with previous talk about a Donkey Kong animation being in development.
It's going to be weird, but hopefully also good. We'll see, in the meantime let us know if you'd like to see a standalone Donkey Kong movie - think of the drama.

Not our year folks. Not our year.
No thank you....I don't want it
Like in the MCU, it's all going to lead up to a Smash Bros. movie 😜. Maybe in an after credits scene, Snake will walk up to Mario in a pub and tell him he's putting a team together.
My god. Chris Pratt as Mario is debatable, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong is just plain wrong.
It's not apparent if it's a rumor. :v
Got to promote that new theme park area.
Universal Studios, who sued Nintendo over Donkey Kong, claiming the character and game were plagiarizing King Kong, is now making a Mario movie with Donkey Kong included, and may make a Donkey Kong solo movie.
Do we know if Chris Pratt has been approached for a voice role in it too?
If I were Miyamoto I certainly wouldn't have wanted to have my name or face associated with this garbage.
It's the same studio behind the minions for crying out loud.
I like him, fine with this casting. If you're going to have DK talk for 90 minutes, Seth Rogen's got the voice and laugh for it. Sounds more like DK than Chris Pratt does as Mario anyway.
Ok, apparently every banana joke has to be in there.
@personauser0893 Given Miyamoto’s penchant for not caring about story at all, partnering with the Minions studio isn’t all that surprising really. He would probably rather see something that’s just fun to watch on a superficial level and Illumination will do that fine
I’d rather a new Donkey Kong game.
@JohnnyC Probably the best casting of the lot besides Peach
I'm surprised at how many complainers are here. Everyone acts like Donkey Kong is some sacred role and Seth Rogen hasn't earned the right or something.
Rogen, Pratt and the rest are fine casting. You'll be okay.
@personauser0893
The Minions movie that made over a billion in the box office? That studio?
@victordamazio how this world turns...
@personauser0893 yeah, those films didn't do well at all lol
@Clamango Too bad Paramount has Sonic and Sony has MGS.
Sonic, Mario and Detective Pikachu, however, are both co-produced by Toho (even if the first one is Paramount, the second is Universal and the third one is Warner Bros.).
Toho should be the one to do this Super Smash Bros. Cinematic Universe and they would just be collaborating with Western companies. Toho should be part of the MGS movie. It would be Toho's biggest blockbuster franchise and they no longer have to rely on Godzilla, Studio Ghibli or Makoto Shinkai.
Imagine if Toho made a Super Smash Bros. Cinematic Universe with both live action and animated films. I would really love a sort of Persona anime movie that crosses over the characters of the Persona games and also puts them in this cinematic universe. This universe can also be much more varied than the MCU, with films being as family-friendly and G-rated as Kirby or as gory and R-rated as Resident Evil.
We could also have a Fire Emblem anime based on the Marth games.
What if we also get a new Street Fighter anime film that would also tie in to the Smash Cinematic Universe?
GoldenEye was also once part of Super Smash Bros. (albeit only weapons from the game appeared) so we could even have some James Bond movies in this universe, and MGM and EON already did work with Toho on a Bond film with You Only Live Twice.
Or my personal dream for this: a Zelda movie by Studio Ghibli.
Outside of anime, we can have yet another Resident Evil live action reboot that is actually closer to the games and ties in to the Smash Cinematic Universe.
Illumination is known for making mediocre films that sink the reputation and bar for Western animated films, and their success tends to ruin Western animation more than help it.
I really wish Nintendo just worked with Studio Ghibli for the Mario movie especially since the designer for Mario previously worked with Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, and Studio Ghibli is actually experimenting with 3D CGI with Ni no Kuni, Ronja the Robber's Daughter, Boro the Caterpillar and Earwig and the Witch. And their experiments are pretty good considering how poor most CGI anime usually are and considering they have limitations with each of their 3D films (Ni no Kuni had PS3 limitations, Boro is a very limited-release short film and both Ronja and Earwig are made-for-TV projects, with the former being a full series).
Earwig and the Witch is actually really good in terms of made-for-TV CGI. I would say it's even better than Miraculous Ladybug or The Clone Wars which has been the benchmark for TV CGI. Hell, it's even better than most of Illumination's films.
danky Kang and his pot smoking antics are gonna be lit up y'all
For some reason, I can imagine a DK-movie a lot better than a Mario movie. Wonder how it’s going to turn out.
In the meantime I‘ll watch me some TerminalMontage, definately the best Nintendo short films out there
This is way better than the Mario casting, at least.
WAY better than the Mario casting.
Seth Rogen definitely has an expressive voice.
Coming to theaters in 2024:
Donkey Kong: Frozen Ape
I hope it's true, but only because it significantly increases the chances of a new DK game being released!
Meanwhile in TV land, wishing for a Zelda anime or live action piece of ocarina of time or Twilight princess 52 episodes.
Also the name will be Donkey Kong goes bananas!
A DK movie could actually turn out good, as could the Mario movie despite the vocal minorities on twitter.
Remember kids, jokes are funny and twitter isn't a real place!👌🏾
I don't understand the hate for Seth Rogen as DK. He's the best casting of the lot in my opinion.
I don't love Jack Black as an actor but can appreciate he's a great choice for Bowser.
Seth Rogen on the other hand isn't a good choice for anything.
@Classic603 Commercial success aside, they're also fun and well-made films. A lot better than a lot of children's animation, and (apologies for offending anyone's fanaticism here) better than some of the lesser Pixar films. Despicable Me 2 in particular was very good.
I want a Mario Kart movie. Don't know why, I just do.
@Clamango
Hahahhahahah
I would actually love that 😛😂
And smash endgame, in the trailer "everyone is here" to fight thanos uhhh taboo uhhh ...
If King k rool is in this movie, who voices him?
So...
> A Donkey Kong expansion to Super Nintendo Land
> A rumored Donkey Kong game by Nintendo EPD
> A rumored Donkey Kong movie based on the Mario movie
Sounds like Donkey Kong cultural revival if this is true.
Ugh I can picture DK doing his annoying laugh now...no thanks.
@Clamango I'd recommend naming it either NCU or DMCU.
I rather fancy Seth Rogen, not quite understanding why he's getting the hate that Chris Pratt does? Some of Pratt's sketchy practices have earned them that, but I think this could be enjoyable. We shouldn't be looking for the next cinematic masterpieces out of a couple of video game adaptations, by any means. Just a fun 90-minute romp!
Also, this seems like the most logical follow-up to Mario with the Universal theme park expansions. Curious to see where else these collaborations might go!
Donkey Kong Country: Banana Express.
Are video game movies the new super hero movies? Granted I only go to the movies to see MCU flicks but still just wondering if the landscape is shifting.
Seth Rogan.... 😒 surprised nintendo wants him apart of a movie considering how vulgar he can be and is on Twitter. Ah oh well.
Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong??? Excellent, so Donkey Kong goes on an adventure to retrieve his stolen stash of weed instead of bananas Should be re-named as Donkey Bong!!
I want this, but even more A NEW DK GAME FOR SWITCH!
I know that Miyamoto and Nintendo had to just go through so many blunts with the actors hired for this movie 😂 they honestly picked some of the funniest, best potheads in the industry & I cannot WAIT to see them together in this movie. Not that I'm encouraging that to anyone, this is a family friendly site. Just stoked for the cast & crew, really excited to see what they make together!
@larryisaman yeah who wouldn't want to partner with a studio that has a $3 billion franchise like Minions right?
@CheekyZelda hopefully Danny DeVito
The problem is that I no longer find Seth Rogan to be entertaining or likeable so ...
But hey, hopefully he manages to put on a voice that makes me forget it's him??? Let's hope.
I just visualized Rogen's voice coming out of DK's mouth and... for once, it actually made sense. Could be fun.
@victordamazio oh the irony
we dont want a Donkey Kong movie, we want a 2.5D Donkey Kong game.
I'm tentatively looking forward to the Mario movie, but Seth Rogen as DK is a hard pass. I find him interminably obnoxious.
@Kilamanjaro What’s your point?
If you're going to spotlight rumour garbage, at least try to feed me one about a solo Peach movie.
If we don't get these shots I'm not interested

Nintendo is really leaning into elevating DK's status as another tentpole IP it seems. A DK movie makes sense next as they already planned for the DK Theme Park expansion pak... and also DK already had a pretty entertaining kids cartoon with 'Donkey Kong Country' back in the day day.
Hopefully an expansive 3D DK game along the lines of Mario Odyssey is in the works too alongside all this... or at least another Diddy Kong Racing!
... Wun can only hope.
Forget a donkey Kong movie. How bout a new game? Ain't it messed up how the switch still doesn't have one?
I hope Tim Curry will voice K. Rool.
Van Diesel voices Groot
Stallone is King Shark
Big actor meaning "lots to say" isn't a sure thing. A lot of times actors will work for scale just to hang out on set or to be tied to an IP they personally are fans of.
Oh it’s on, like so many Donkey Kongs!
Seth Rogen is literally the perfect choice. You're all nuts.
@Giancarlothomaz the one that's highly rumored and highly anticipated from epd Tokyo
I hope we get a game soon. Preferably giving the 3d game a shot before Mario odyssey 2. As for a movie. Not so sure, feel DK could work better as a series of 2d animated shorts. If any series could work as a movie, look up Zelda, Metroid or Star Fox instead. Now those might have potential. I can't deny or see otherwise.
Lol at people who are mad.
It's a cartoon movie.
Go crazy! Don't hold back.
Nothing but hype.
They making this fun
@NintendoByNature yes, exactly this one
Should getting Reggie to do DK - he is DK.
Why? Why is this happening?
@personauser0893 That doesn't automatically mean the movie's going to be garbage. And none of us know it's garbage. Not until it's released.
@Zeldafan79 It kind of does with Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. But maybe we'll get another installment in 2024, since that's the 30th anniversary of Donkey Kong Country. That's when the big oaf really got his due.
Plot: Donkey's lost his bananas and gone ape-sh*t.
"Hold up Diddy, let me spark up this doobie before we get moving..."
Cue uncontrollable giggling for 90 minutes.
