Nintendo still has a handful of releases up its sleeve for the remainder of 2021 and one of them happens to be Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain on the Switch.
If it sounds or looks familiar, it's because it's actually a title that's being revived from the Nintendo DS era. It was originally released way back in 2005/06.
The new version arrives on 3rd December and will be available for the price of $29.99 USD. It also comes with multiplayer and touch screen support. As part of the lead-up to its release, Nintendo has uploaded a five-minute overview trailer on its official Japanese YouTube channel.
Nintendo will probably localise this extended look, but for now, you can at least see some of the game in action. It's easy enough to work out what's going on in most of the minigames.
And here's a look at the original announcement trailer, if you did miss it. You can also see the same game being played in the latest Nintendo ad featuring Christina Aguilera.
Will you be revisiting this one? Comment down below.

very fascinating
Oh yeah. This is big brain time.
Welp time to embarrass myself. I always go into these with confidence and Nintendo hands me a dunce cap and brake marks.
Nintendo asks only $30 for a game?
It's very suspicious.
@cdriper : It's more or less consistent with the price of the physical release of Brain Training overseas (minus the stylus).
This is a much better value proposition than the full-priced installments on the DS and Wii back in the day.
I am curious to find out why I would buy this, if I already have the other brain training Switch app. Could NL start doing comparison articles, as Nintendo starts to add semingly very similar titles? (such as mario party (2018) vs mario party: superstars (2021) and maybe upcoming splatoon 3)?
Looks like a cheap free-to-play mobile game so far, I think 30$ is still too much for this.
The same is true for Brain Training on Switch which was so lacking in content, I think it should have been only 10€ at most.
I will wait for the "Small Brain" edition. That will suit me better, being a bear of very little brain.
I'm definitely picking this one up. Seems like a lot of fun
I like how Nintendo brings this back...
but not F-Zero.
Looking forward to this. Loved the Wii and DS game back in the day.
@okeribok I haven't played much of Brain Age/Brain Training, but from what I've seen both series are about keeping your brain active, the difference is that Big Brain Academy is more of having a good time either alone or with family and friends while doing so (only the DS BBA is a single player game but Wii Degree and this one are multiplayer) and Brain Age is more of a serious solo experience. Not to mention Big Brain Academy is more colorful than Brain Age.
I might just get this day one, I really miss the casual Nintendo games from the DS/Wii era. They were designed and executed to perfection, Nintendo didn't just move into that market to cash out.
@MS7000 f-zero has also sold worse as a franchise than big brain according to available numbers, so it isn’t weird at all really.
@Ryu_Niiyama True, but you don't see them bringing back the Wii Play series now do you? =P
Or on a slightly more serious answer, what about the Wario Land series, that's sold more across all the games than Big Brain Academy? I know the answer is realistically that "Galaxy Brain School" (as I am affectionately going to call it) has more wider appeal due to its casual nature, but in truth, I thought this was a franchise that was going to stay as a relic in the past. It just feels bizarre to me that Nintendo have so many other franchises to pick from and this is what they picked.
I'm not bitter. Not at all.
@MS7000 oh I am sorry I misunderstood your comment. I thought you wanted a legitimate reason behind why this would come back over f-zero. But you were making a fan comment. Disregard then. (Not being snarky; I would have glossed over your comment instead of replying if I had realized.)
(Wario is represented by warioware and mario party so there is likely no reason to bring back the wario land series from a catalog perspective. Plus big brain has a wider audience. Lack of wii sports is likely to distance from the wii brand after the WiiU. )
Anyway, looking forward to Big Brain Academy.
@Ryu_Niiyama That's okay, I didn't think you were being snarky, and I apologise if my comment also came off as such. =)
I am just personally waiting for F-Zero, Wario Land, Wave Race etc to have their own "Metroid Dread" moment where they get brand new games.
@MS7000 well fingers crossed for you! (I’m a wave race and 1080 fan but I’ve long since accepted that those franchises are dead currently). Although I wish someone, anyone would make a good snowboarding game for the switch. Every one I buy is somewhere between middling to not good.
We still play the Wii version from time to time as it is a fun multiplayer game for large groups.
Which has me super interested in this one...
...but...
...it looks like it IS the Wii game.
I'm waiting for someone to play it and confirm, but most everything I've seen is exactly what I remember from the Wii game.
Almost everything.
There appears to be an additional multiplayer mode, but beyond that, I'm wondering if this is more like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe than an actual new Big Brain game.
...that is my hesitation.
I tried Brain Age and...yeah it didn't really interested me much...kinda boring to me. But I actually like Big Bran Academy, so, yeah I'll likely grab this one. Kinda glad Advance Wars was delayed so i don't have to buy both at the same time...Though having Advance Wars first would've been nice, ah well. xD
I’m oddly excited for this game. I like little addictive puzzle/training games like this and having daily tracking seems pretty neat. Multiplayer is also cool with being able to play against friends locally and random ghosts online.
@Ryu_Niiyama It’s a shame Steep for the Switch got cancelled back in 2018 or so. I have that game on PC and although I haven’t played it in a while, it was a ton of fun and would have been really cool to have on the go.
@DeathByLasagna Yeah I boycotted that one in annoyance/protest as I have enough snowbaording games on all of my systems not to have to give ubi money for steep. Just because I can play always online doesn’t mean I want to. I get why they canceled it, just wish they had retooled a switch version that was offline and or used bots instead of just scraping the whole thing.
idk why, but this looks pretty dumb downed compared to the ds entry. Much like how the skill level is basically designed for 5 year olds and or non exsistent in the first switch mario party game.
Sad.
This game looks so great , I cannot wait to get it, I love brain teasing games like these. I noticed that Nintendo Life showed Christina Aguilera, but didn't Neil Patrick Harris and his family playing big brain academy? Are you afraid of the homophobes? And their homophobic comments? I am glad Nintendo shows REAL FAMILIES GAY AND STRAIGHT ALIKE. they really are a system for everyone.
@mariopartyfan68 Exactly. I love the NPH one.
@cdriper it happened with Game Builder Garage, also 😂
