One game we've been keeping a close eye on for some time now is Square Enix's upcoming turn-based tactical RPG, Triangle Strategy. It's due out at some point in 2022, exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.
While we've already seen quite a bit of it - and even played an early demo of the game, Square Enix has now released its first "character & story" trailer focused on Roland Glenbrook. Although it's in Japanese, it provides another look at a number of fresh screenshots from the game and even some battle sequences.
As documented on the unofficial Triangle Strategy wiki page, Roland is the son of King Regna of the Glenbrook Kingdom. If you played the demo, you might have noticed the following about the character:
"Throughout the demo of Triangle Strategy, Roland behaves quite honorably, if not a little blindsightedly. He bears a deep vendetta against Avlora and King Gustadolph for his kingdom's usurpal, and would battle with them at any oppurtunity. Lastly, Roland has a selfless side, as shown by him offering to give himself to the Grand Duchy in exchange for the Wolffort Demesnes' safety."
When Triangle Strategy is eventually released, it promises to feature around 50 hours of gameplay and multiple endings. It's also got stunningly unique HD-2D graphics and has been developed by the team behind Octopath Traveler, which is why it probably looks familiar.
Square Enix also shared a localised overview trailer last month. Here it is if you didn't catch it:
Will you be trying this game out when it lands on the Nintendo Switch next year? Tell us down below.

My god, does this setting seem unimaginative. I feel like this could have benefited from a more inventive twist. The title is still equally bland. But the beautiful artwork and music are probably going to be enough to win people over.
A high fantasy epic starring... Roland. Still... the best example of this, I think, was Holy Magic Century, where the main character had the heroic name of... Brian.
Looks like budget version of FF tactics. Probably give it a try down the line
Looks like a rich man’s version of FF Tactics. Can’t wait to take this on.
@Mr_Fox And the gameplay. Don't forget that the gameplay will probably win a lot of people over, including myself . Been waiting for a great tactics game for a while, this one sure seems to fill that gap.
@Ooyah All rank amateurs next to Clive.
@Mr_Fox It's a game about politics. The setting seems suitable to me. It's not a fantasy adventure or anything.
I got Octopath in 2018 but only properly started playing it again recently and it's pretty good. Will definitely be looking into this too once it's out
Can't watch the trailer because I know I'm getting the game anyway and I want to avoid any and all spoilers I can, but I really, really hope this doesn't turn out to be disappointing. The demo really did show a lot of promise if they fix some of the problems and they do the game right.
@Mr_Fox See, what you find unimaginative, I find refreshing. I find too many JRPGs try to be too unique to a point where it just becomes (to me) ridiculous, and I always prefer my fantasy to be slightly more down to earth. So for me, this is actually an exciting title, because it seems to be more about the human interactions and the implications of war, and less about cool monsters to fight.
Not to say I don't understand your sentiment. But for me this is exactly what I am looking for.
Already got my interest after playing the beta demo. Can't wait to see what the final game feels like. I had a feeling Square Enix care more about the Bravely series or games that feels like the Bravely series such as this game and Octopath Traveler than craps like I am Setsuna, Lost Sphear, Balan Wonderworld, and Oninaki as they hardly took feedbacks for those games.
Are they seriously going with that title? Can't see it getting many curiosity buys with that.
What's the problem with the protagonist's name? Nobody here read The Dark Tower series?
@Matty1988 I would say the strategy genre in general doesn't get curiosity buys. I'd assume anyone who reads the back of the case would pretty easily know if it's something they'd like or not.
@Lugazz They've forgotten the face of their fathers...
@UglyCasanova Aye, they do not aim with their eyes, nor shoot with their minds or kill with their hearts...
Long days and pleasant night, my friend.
@Ooyah Yeah---Roland definitely doesn't come off as a wholly epic fantasy name at first glance. The genre definitely tries to steer away from names we see as common for the sake of exoticism.
If I can play the naysayer, consider the following:
@moodymcsorley And the French poem was inspired by a real life Roland (Hruotland), a frank knight that lived from 736 to 778. He also gives his name to the Roncevaux Pass in the Pyrenees (Brèche de Roland in French)
Edit: @Meteoroid was faster hahahahah
I'll say it until I'm blue in the face: they're doing this game a disservice by having their tiny map sprites do all the acting in story segments, instead of using character portraits.
Especially when they're using voice acting!! What generation of RPGs didn't have the space for character portraits in gameplay, but did include voice lines? It's so incongruous.
@swoose Didn't you play the beta demo, you're suppose to play that and submit your feedback afterwards like you know having character portraits like what you're complaining about. If the final game didn't had that then it's your own fault for not giving them the feedback that the game deserve.
The game looks impressive, and will have it's audience, but I am more interested in 'lighter' SRPGs like Vandal Hearts (if memory serves). I have tried a few Fire Emblems over the years, usually enjoying them for a while but ultimately running out of gas. I'm glad the Three Houses sold well, but looks like too much work for my taste. A new Shining Force could be nice.
Yeah, Roland is the name of a famous medieval knight.
King Regna though. Bit weird.
@Specter_of-the_OLED I did that! And I'll play the 2nd demo if they do one and give the same feedback again about character portraits, but I don't think they're listening to me.
It's a shame because I heard "too much story" as a common complaint after the 1st demo. I don't think the story segments would feel so long if they actually showed you who was talking, like every other story-heavy game in the last 20 years.
@moodymcsorley " names we see as common for the sake of exoticism." - How eloquently put! That's exactly how I feel.
Just not for me. I've ever owned one final Fantasy tactics game and I think it was on the DS or advance and could hardly play it.
Clunky, sloppy, this style just feels archaic and I dont understand it.
