Nintendo has provided updated sales figures for its best-selling games on Switch, although the list is very familiar indeed.
In fact, since the last update provided a few months ago, the entire top ten order has remained exactly the same with no newcomers squeezing their way in. Of course, each game's sales have increased, however, giving us slightly different totals this time around.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (which has incidentally now outsold Mario Kart Wii to become the series' best-selling title) has extended its lead ahead of Animal Crossing: New Horizons to stay top of the list, although this month's major update and DLC could spark another boost in sales for the latter. At the bottom end, Ring Fit Adventure continues to creep ever closer to Splatoon 2's total after knocking New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe out of the top ten earlier this year.
Below, you'll find the Switch's best-selling games as of 30th September 2021. Note that the data only includes Nintendo-published titles.
Top Ten Best-Selling Nintendo Switch Games (as of 30th September 2021):
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - 38.74 million
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons - 34.85 million
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - 25.71 million
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - 24.13 million
- Pokémon Sword and Shield - 22.64 million
- Super Mario Odyssey - 21.95 million
- Super Mario Party - 16.48 million
- Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! / Let's Go, Eevee! - 13.83 million
- Splatoon 2 - 12.68 million
- Ring Fit Adventure - 12.21 million
The numbers above are worldwide sales and include retail, digital, and copies bundled with hardware all combined. Nintendo has also revealed that Switch hardware lifetime sales have now reached more than 92 million units.
Think Mario Kart will remain Switch's best-selling game forever? Feel free to share your thoughts below.

I own all but the last one! That dang ring is expensive 😂
I own them all except for Pokemon Let's Go. Deeply regret buying Pokemon Sword and Super Mario Party as they're two of the worst games I own on Switch. The rest are quality though.
All but the Pokémon games. Sold super smash and Mario party was a waste of a game voucher.
I own all 10 of these. Great to see RFA being a best seller, it's such a great game
Best selling Switch game is a Wii U game.
Don’t have Splatoon, feel like I missed the boat for 2 but will jump in for 3. Also don’t have Super Mario Party.. although tempted by Superstars. I’m really tempted to sell RFA and the Pokemon games, I can’t see myself replaying..
@Sahnec : Good choice. Better to spend your money on delicious puffed cheese rings instead.
Software sales milestones:
> Mario Kart 8 DX has outsold Mario Kart Wii, making it the best-selling Mario Kart game, the 2nd best-selling Mario game, and the 3rd best-selling Nintendo game ever.
> Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury has outsold Super Mario Galaxy 2.
> Skyward Sword HD was about ~70,000 copies away from outselling the Wii version as of Sep 2021, which is almost certainly has by this point.
> Mario Golf Super Rush is now the best-selling Mario Golf entry of all time.
> Miitopia on Switch has outsold Miitopia on 3DS.
@chiptoon the 4th best selling is a WiiU game as well.
If I remember correctly, Nintendo said they needed to sell 2 million copies of BotW to break even. Hopefully this means they will keep making Zelda games until the end of time
@Sahnec very expensive. Making it all the more impressive its sold so many. Didn't expect those sales figures when it released.
Of these? A grand total of three so far.😅 My library has always been at odds with everyone who claims that Nintendo consoles are only worth purchasing for Nintendo games.
Animal Crossing, Pokemon and Mario Party don't deserve to be on this list. Where is Mario Maker?
I own all except the two Pokemon games and Ring Fit. That Ring Fit number is impressive - that's a nice earner for Nintendo / makes up for Labo(!) I hope we continue to see innovative ideas in the future.
Six. I have MK8 for the WiiU and I’ll be buying it for my nephew for Xmas as well.
The first time a Zelda game has outsold the main Mario platformer on a Nintendo console I believe.
I still can't figure out why Super Mario Party sold that well Q_Q
Well, I guess that's good news eventually, my favorite videogame company makes money.
I own the whole list!
8 out of 10 because I don't seem to care about Pokemon anymore. That might change as times goes by...
I own the top 9. I think everyone does by now
@Rhaoulos
Breath of the Wild was that special case because of the delays, which probably was when Nintendo increased the budget for the game.
I highly doubt Nintendo would ever stop with Zelda to begin with. If you include remasters, remakes, and spin-offs, Zelda has pretty much become an annual franchise.
I remember when people called Ring Fit a flop lol
pokemon outsells odyssey
this is fine
All of these are great games, yet I only own SwSh, Animal Crossing, Splatoon, and Smash Bros. I know that LM3 did really well, so I wonder where it ranks.
Warioware didn't sell 1 million units in its first 3 weeks. Interesting.
I have 6 of the 10. I don't have Smash, Mario Party, Splatoon 2, or Ring Fit Adventure.
I think it really says something about Pokemon that its not the best selling games behind Mario Kart, as the series is on the 3DS. I really think the series has stunted itself and it shows here, with AC and Zelda selling higher than any Pokemon series entries
But yeah, the only games I don't have here are Mario party and Splatoon. I also no longer own Pokemon Let's Go (garbage games). So I own 7/10 of em
4 of them. Still regret getting BoTW though.
Wow. I have all of these.
I just own two of them: BotW and Odyssey.
I own all except Super Mario Party. I held out and now have Mario Party Superstars.
I do regret getting Let's Go.
@CactusMan im about to start FFIX but gotta find the time to sink 40+ hours into it lol
And everyone thought Animal Crossing was goj g to dethrone Mario Kart hahaha. Amazing sells, for every title. Ring Fit Adventure has that very well deserved.
I have all of them except for Super Mario Party.
Man, I'm slacking because I only have 6 of the top 10. I guess that's what happens when you slow down on buying video games, in general. I do buy a good amount of third-parties/Indies, as well.
10/10 please Nintendo stop taking my money!
@Rubashov it was terribly advertised by Nintendo themselves, but it is actually a fantastic product, very cheap and versatile and entertaining and effective if you're looking for a very good fitness tool that makes you WANT to keep coming back and push a little harder. The only thing I was bored of after over a year of daily fitness for 2 hours, was the constant pushing of the game to take a break already
Don't own the Pokemon games or Super Mario Party. In fact, I've never owned a game from either of these franchises...
Of this list, I only own Smash Bros, Super Mario Party, Let's Go Pikachu and Mario Odyssey
Only own Mario Odyssey, Smash Bros. Ultimate and Mario Kart. Not sure if I want to get the others, though.
8/10. I don't own SMO or Ring Fit.
I own all but Ring Fit Adventure.
I own half of them. MK8D, ACNH, SSBU, BotW, & Odyssey.
I notice almost all the odd numbers are primarily multiplayer games and none of the evens are (Mario Kart-1, Smash-3, Mario Party-7, Splatoon-9). 🧐 Pokemon is the only exception. Conspiracy?
I own exactly 2, 4, 6, and 10-- all the evens except for Pokemon. I guess I don't have many party or fighting games.
6, soon to be 7 when I get Ring Fit Adventure. Never been interested in Pokémon, EVER, and wouldn't get Mario Party as I intend on getting the new one on Saturday.
Surprised to see Animal Crossing sell that much. Wow. Why would they stop supporting it with DLC? Seems like a no brainer, but this is Nintendo...
6/10. not into pokemon, no ring fit, & mk8 is on my wii u only.
@quigtendo you really didn't miss the boat for Splatoon 2, yeah you might not experience Splatfest but the rest of the game still bangs! Plenty of people still play so you'll never be left waiting ages for a match, it's still very much worth it and even more so if you get the Octopass expansion.
@BenAV Um excuse you Super Mario Party is actually the best Mario Party
@chipia I genuinely don't understand this hate for Super Mario Party, the unique dice blocks and allies are fantastic new mechanics and almost all of the mini games are quality
This super cool guy has five.
@Dinklebot It's really not.
I have several.
1. Mario Odyssey
2. Breath of the Wild
3. Super Mario Party
4. Smash Bros Ultimate
5. Pokémon Shield
I’m the only Switch owner that I personally know who doesn’t own Mario Kart 8. I’ve been waiting for a digital sale. At this point it’ll never happen. So I may try to pick up a second hand copy.
As for Animal Crossing, 3/4 of my friends list (mostly people I know personally) own it. I don’t.
@Dinklebot
The boards are the problem with Super.
They’re over simplified and have elements left over from the Wii era Mario Party.
Superstars’ board are old school. That unfair, brutal style of board that causes fist fights.
I played an online match the other day on Princess Peach’s Cake. I was the only person who managed to grow a super Piranha plant. I was already in first place with two stars. The person in 2nd also had two stars but less coins. I ended up dominating the match because I stole his or her’s star using that plant.
I know on the other side they were probably raging against me. And that is what makes a great Mario Party. It’s about how friends become enemies and the fiercest competition outside of first person shooters.
@McGruber
Yeah they should just commit to it and support it through the rest of the generation.
@UglyCasanova
May I ask why?
BOTW is my favorite game of the last ten years. It’s absolutely brilliant, imo. It feels the closest to the NES original. It isn’t perfect and has some flaws, but it captures something that no other Zelda since the NES has captured. True and utter freedom to do things how you want and when you want.
And I’ve owned nothing but PlayStations since I got rid of my 360 in 2009. Before that I was mainly on PS2 and before that on PS1. So I’m a Sony fan first and foremost.
@1UP_MARIO Nah... I've only played 2-3 of those (actually 2). Not interested in the rest. But those are huge numbers, Nintendo knows how to make money, that's a fact.
Only have Zelda and Ring Fit. Had Mario Kart but I gave it to my friends' son. Love my Switch but most of these Nintendo blockbusters simply don't appeal to me.
@chipia I disagree on Animal crossing, I think it's a good game with a lot of flaws, and might not deserve the sales it got, but I think deserves to be on this list. If judging the game based on how it is now I think it deserves it, but to be fair I didn't get it at launch
I own all of these except super, and only got lets go because it was on sale for 25$ and I don't think it was worth that. I could care less about either of the pokemon games on this list but my brother loves pokemon and we share a switch.
@SPM Sometimes I wish they didn't do all this stuff that makes them money
@Otoemetry That being said I would wait for 3, as splatoon 2 is a great game but theoretically splatoon 3 will just be 2 but better
I have all but the Let's Gos. Sword & Shield made them irrelevant.
@chipia Mario Maker 2 is kinda boring imo, especially if you've played the first one. Obviously not many have since it was on the Wii U and we all know what happened there, but still. Doesn't really improve on a lot it feels
I only own most of one game on the list. And thats MK8 but on WiiU. Still have not picked up a Switch.
@OnlyItsMeReid I just think if a person wants to ready themselves for Splatoon 3 they could do worse than trying Splatoon 2, there's definitely a full price game's worth of life left in it imo
@Otoemetry I think there’s a full game for the price in October expansion alone
@OnlyItsMeReid definitely, and you'd probably be able to get the base game fairly cheap 2nd hand these days so it would be even better value!
