
You might remember F-Zero Climax, hmm...perhaps not! It was a game released on Nintendo's Game Boy Advance way back in 2004 and has never been localised outside of Japan. It also happens to be the most recent entry in the series, which is now over 17 years ago.
While an official localisation may never happen at this point, fans have once again gone above and beyond. The latest community project to now be made available to the public is the "F-Zero Climax Translation Project". This is an "unofficial translation" - allowing players to experience the extensive storyline starring Rick Wheeler, as well as what the rest of the game has to offer.

Although there have been localisation efforts for this title previously, this is technically the first "complete" patch for Climax, as noted by Twitter user GaucheArtist. And the team behind it explains how it features "everything" translated and localised:
"In 2004, the last F-Zero game had a release in Japan, also it was the last F-Zero game released, but it was never released in the west… Until now! This unofficial translation is like if it was released officially on english, with everything translated and localized, so don’t miss the last adventure of Rick Wheeler, and BOOST FIRE! We really hope everyone can enjoy it!"
Fan localisations of Japan-only Nintendo titles aren't exactly new. Earlier this year Mother 3's fan translation patch got an update - in line with the game's 15th anniversary. Just this week, we also saw a Zelda II ROM hack that removed all the "annoying stuff" from the game.

Hooray! Been waiting on this one actually. Crazy to think it’s the most recent game in the series.
Damn F-Zero started with Mode 7 and ended with Mode 7. If you take out both F-Zero X and F-Zero GX, it's almost like the series hardly ever evolve.

Might be 2D F Zero but should give fans something till Nintendo finally cracks.

Please STOP using the world "translation" and "localization" interchangeably. They are not the same.
Localization involves rewriting the story to remove context and literary tropes from the source culture and replacing them with context and tropes from the culture it's being localized for, as well as changing art and sound assists that would have an unwelcome meaning. Looking at Xenoblades, Tora telling us that Poppi'a design is based off his grand father looking at blade designs in the UK as opposed to him taking her design from PORN in Japan is "localization". The fact that her names were changed to Alpha, QT and QTpie instead of JS, JK, and JD, which are abbreviations for school years in Japan, is localization.
As far as I can tell from this video no localization was required. It was translated. It's a big deal because to a lot of purists a translation is fine but a localization is taboo.

To be fair, a proper remaster of F-Zero X with infinite draw distance, stereo soundtrack and Expansion Kit options would do the trick for me.
I am just writing.. because I always write when there is and appropriate or inappropriate moment to demand a new F-Zero shrug
@HeadPirate Hey, I'm the translator of the project here. We did, in fact, do a full localization job on the game. In this case, what this meant was changing details of the F-Zero characters and world to match that of the previous F-Zero games that were released in English (such as Clank Hughes -> Tek Hughes, for example). That's a small example, but there were a lot of changes like this and some things where we had to make tough decisions about which direction to go, so we think "localization" is the most accurate term to use for this version of Climax.

I can go ahead and answer this while I'm here. Yes, most of the menus and important gamplay information was already in English. This translation was definitely aimed at the hardcore fans, because the bulk of the work was translating the story chapters, character profiles, and vehicle profiles. That said, there was still plenty of Japanese in the menus (link cable messages, tutorials, the entire track editor, descriptions, etc.), so it was still quite a bit of work (over 3 years, in fact).

So now my rant is "stop using the word translation to cheat these people of the recognition they truly deserve" ... but the "don't use them interchangeably" argument still stands.
@pichuscute0 Hey there, as someone who still enjoys a GBA a lot (usually a Micro) I'm delighted for what you've done here - and I for one will definitely enjoy the localised and translated aspects. Graphically at least Climax looks to be the pinnacle of the GBA trio - so I'm glad to have the option to experience it in English. I will find a way to get a paid copy of Climax and patch it for use on an Ez Flash.

Your commitment to finding inane things to quibble about whenever anything tangentially related to Japan is mentioned is so total as to be almost admirable.
I probably should let this go, but I remember when you criticised an article writer for saying that a set of chocolates literally called バレンタインコレクション/Valentine Collection, were intended for Valentine’s Day. You said this was like calling Hanukkah ‘Jewish Christmas’.

I have no moral qualms with fan translations, ROM hacks, roms, emulators or hacking or modding consoles. The best way to combat piracy is to provide a convenient service at a reasonable price. (The opposite of NSO).
@HeadPirate Honestly, I think the statement ‘“calling Valentine’s Day chocolates ‘Valentines Day chocolates’ is like calling Hanukkah ‘Jewish Christmas’” is one of the most impactful things I’ve ever read. I’m not sure I’ll ever forget it.
For what it’s worth, you have my full permission to both hold and state your sometimes… rather novel opinions. My only request is that you work on the phrasing. As things stand, many of your posts read as though you’re positioning yourself as the sole purveyor of fact.
I’d also suggest that what your often haughtily delivered remarks suffer from is not a lack of self-esteem, but of humility. I would have hoped that literally being corrected by the translator of this project might inspire that within you, but perhaps not.

@brunojenso Nothing else at the moment. This started just as a way to practice my Japanese (mostly during an old job I had lol), but it ballooned into much more when we realized what we needed to do to make our Climax translation the best it could be. It ended up taking a team of 5 almost 3 and a half years to finally complete and we definitely couldn't have done it without everyone involved. I think I'll be taking it easy as far as translation goes for awhile haha.
But I'm very happy everyone can finally play this game in English.
