Since the original release of Pokémon Red and Blue on the Game Boy, The Pokémon Company has consistently tried to take its successful monster-collecting RPG through many different iterations, genres, and applications. Pokémon has taken forays into genres such as digital/physical card games, the Mystery Dungeon series, and ventured into the lives of what non-trainers do in the world with the Ranger titles. We've even seen Pokémon interactions brought into real life with the Pokéwalker and the augmented reality mechanics of Pokémon Go. This time, with Pokémon Unite, Pokémon has joined the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena genre, more commonly referred to as “MOBA”.
Pokémon Unite has a gentle learning curve that doesn't require previous familiarity with MOBAs. From the get-go, the game teaches all of the main mechanics with the prolific electric mouse, Pikachu. Despite easy to grasp tutorials, though, the game does lack more crucial tips such as explaining undefended goal zones; these are goals players can immediately score inside by holding the button down.
Unite follows a 5 vs. 5 online format - when 10 players are connected each individual chooses their Pokémon prior to the match. Unite's default map, Remoat Stadium, has 10-minute matches split into three paths — top, bottom, and central. Both teams try to level up, gain experience, evolve by fighting wild Pokémon, and eventually skirmish with the enemy Pokémon to gain map control along with scoring points in each of the opposing goals that can be found in the top and bottom paths. The central path is mainly for fighting wild Pokemon and Zapdos when two minutes are left in the match, to gain huge points.
Players need to make constant decisions on approaching goal zones. Is it better to score several points in a quick fashion then escape to safety, or score a larger number of points with the risk of an enemy swooping in to disrupt attempts?
In terms of the roster as you start, initially it maxes out at 20 Pokémon with more to release in the future. The game is relatively generous with characters from the start, as logging in daily and completing missions allows you to rack up Aeos Coins, the in-game currency that can be used to purchase specific Pokémon.
Every Pokémon is divided into two groups for basic attacks: melee, and ranged. Melee Pokémon such as Machamp have high base HP, outrageous attack, and are able to take more damage to be explosive up close, while ranged Pokemon such as Cinderace are glass cannons with low base HP but can inflict a lot of damage from a distance. You can also break them down into five groups. Speedsters with strong mobility, attackers inflicting massive damage at a distance, defenders to protect teammates, supporters to heal or provide crowd control, and all-rounders that can excel both near/far. There will definitely be Pokémon for every type of player out there. Choose Pikachu and shock from the sidelines while ramping up damage with Electro Ball, or Zeraora to Slash at foes with a surprise attack and then escape using Volt Switch?
Some Pokémon can unleash boosted attacks that have timed cooldowns; these have various special effects. In addition there are special attacks; these are learned throughout the match upon reaching specific levels, with the player choosing a special attack to start the match. The choices of these moves cater towards the player’s own playstyle between preset options, so there's scope to settle into your own approach to battles.
To return to your objectives in a battle, defeating both wild and enemy Pokémon gives Aeos Energy, which is dependent on the value of the Pokémon knocked out. Pokémon such as the starting Lillipup and Aipom give two points each, but tougher Pokémon like wild Audino give five points of Aeos Energy. You need this Aeos Energy to score points on the enemy’s goal, so it's never just a case of attempting to dash straight to the goal. In addition defeating strong wild Pokémon such as Drednaw, Rotom, and Zapdos will give the entire team different buffs and benefits - working together with teammates is vital.
In terms of modes, Ranked play is unlocked at Trainer Level 6 with several conditions, but the main hurdle is amassing five 'licences'. The game does give some licences in the first few days of playing, but for free players they might actually reach Trainer Level 10 before being able to play Ranked games. Ranked games go on for a season, and depending on ranks players will earn rewards at the end of the season. Ranked can be played with friends as long as ranks are close enough for the game to deem it acceptable. The actual matches are 10 minutes long and points double in the final two minutes, encouraging comebacks and to dissuade teams giving up too early.
Quick matches are unlocked at Trainer Level 9. Quick matches are five minute matches with a rotation of three different maps. The three quick maps are Shivre City, a frigid, snowy 4 vs. 4 map; Auroma Park, a luscious green 3 vs. 3 map; finally Mer Stadium is similar to the default Remoat Stadium 5 vs. 5 map in Ranked/Standard, except the locale is a smaller scale allowing four players for each team. Quick matches, due to their 5 minute length, give Pokémon faster opportunities to level up and evolve.
Levelling up, unsurprisingly, is the big focus. When Pokémon reach a certain level they unlock a Unite Move, which is immensely powerful. Evolution is also at the forefront of gameplay, another key to learning more powerful moves. Aiming to evolve as quickly as possible will tip the scales in a Pokémon's favour when facing off against opponents at an earlier evolution. There are other aspects such as hiding in bushes, in classic Pokémon style, and attempting to teleport to safety. There's plenty of strategy to master.
As you'd expect of the genre there are various factors designed to give you an upper hand. Held items can be acquired for boosts, but they also represent the start of some of Unite's issues. For one thing the game does a poor job of explaining the benefits of different items, so you may waste in-game currency of Aeos Coins and Tickets as a result. These items can also be upgraded and levelled up with Enhancers, which you can earn in daily or weekend missions. While you can earn key increases through time spent, balancing does become as issue as - unsurprisingly in a free-to-play game - you can spend real money on Gems or the Battle Pass to gain an advantage and level these items up faster.
The benefits of levelling up more rapidly certainly add a 'pay to win' feeling to proceedings. It is disheartening that the catch up rate between free and paying players presents such a wide gap. Players could grind for hours on end to upgrade one Held Item to level 10 or 15 - or spend $100 from the start to purchase Item Enhancers to max out several Held Items along with purchasing characters. There's certainly a danger of online contests becoming extremely difficult for those trying to level naturally without paying real money on boosts.
The inevitable Battle Pass grants cosmetics, extra Item Enhancers for Held Items, and Aeos Tickets which can be exchanged for useful items. It's the nature of the free-to-play model, but is does feel like the game steadily coerces players to spend money through different means, with a fear of missing out on the optimal experience otherwise.
Your mileage - especially in terms of playing for free - will certainly vary; especially as you face increasingly powerful opponents online. Another notable flaw, especially for a team-based game, is that Unite lacks ways to communicate with the team outside of preset indicators, which can cause issues due to multiple notifications going off all at once. The screen can get bogged down, and it is difficult to decide on objectives. Sometimes it becomes visually problematic to parse information, and such limited communication options with teammates adds to the issue. If playing with friends you can, of course, use another service to chat, but once again it's not an ideal solution.
Conclusion
It is difficult to recommend Pokémon Unite to 'free' players unless they're truly in it for the long haul. The gameplay is engaging, with a large roster of Pokémon that can be tried out in offline modes, but owning iconic Pokémon such as Lucario or Garchomp to play in Ranked will require an immense amount of Aoes Coins or paid-for Aeos Gems. A lot of joy is to be found in Quick Matches due to daily map rotations, but ultimately Unite is too geared toward grabbing people’s purses to win games rather than providing an even playing field for everyone. Players that don't pay will likely find frustration in constantly matching with others who have spent money; it's worth keeping that in mind before committing to Pokémon Unite.

I have not spent a dime on it and I am having a blast. And I do not feel disadvantaged at all. I just can't wait to unlock everything in the game.
Yeah, i played it for ~5-6 hours and after those hours I had my fill. Not going to buy in on the pay to win model.
I don't dislike the game but it's a little too boring for me. I'll give it a little more time, but I don't think that'll change, unfortunately. If people want to spend hundreds of dollars on this game just to be better than everyone else, they have the right to do so. However, I can't, don't, and won't feel bad for people that do that then try to blame the company because there are microtransactions. No one is making them spend that money but themselves. You can tell who those people are while playing the game, mostly because their movement speed is noticeably higher, but I've still beaten my fair share of them. The game is only a few weeks old, so no one is really skilled at it yet. No amount of money can substitute for skill, so I think it'll even itself out as time goes on.
Why don’t they do team battles in a mainline Pokémon game? Dragon Warrior was fun, but immediately got better with a party system in subsequent games. Surprised that after all this time the closest Pokémon is to having party battles is a MOBA 😑
PARTY NINJA APPROVED
If f2p games have taught me anything, it's that the microtransactions almost always get worse instead of better as time goes on, so don't expect the game's pay-to-win model to get better anytime soon.
Heck, the main reason why I haven't even opened the app on my Switch is because I don't want Tencent to send my personal data to the CCP, via those microtransactions.
If only the game's microtransactions were purely cosmetic like most games, I can't see the sense in putting enhancing items that provide true advantages over other players behind a paywall, other than wringing money out of players, you should only be able to level it up by grinding, or better yet, remove them all together so it is fair for everyone no matter how much time you put in.
I’ve been playing for a decent amount of hours and I don’t really feel too disadvantaged. Granted I’ve played my fair share of MOBA’s so that’s probably why. I agree they shouldn’t lock any core items away and force you to grind or pay-up but I’m having fun with it and haven’t put a single cent in. Hopefully they can improve on that front and I think they’ll have a really good, lighthearted MOBA on their hands!
It's one hell of a start for a F2P title when pretty much everyone agrees spending money gives you a noticeable advantage. You're supposed to lure in players with generous rewards for playing regularly and then slowly introduce more and more items/mechanics/etc. so free players will begin to struggle and feel more inclined to open up their wallets.
I can already tell that despite desperate efforts of some content creators, Unite won't have a lasting presence.
I don't like free-to-play games at the best of times and if there's any sort of pay-to-win elements then that alone makes it a complete load of trash garbage isn't worth playing.
Held items should either be scrapped or made completely free. It’s beyond greedy to give such a clear advantage to richer players.
I found it utterly tedious really.
I’m surprised I’m into this game as much as I am, I don’t see the pay to win aspect much though if at all. There are obviously some spending money(that pirate Cinderace screams “I spent $100 plus on this game”) but I’ve never felt severely disadvantaged going up against them, it actually seems that they are the most aggressive that get caught up and lose. The communication needs a lot of help though, a good team can beat anyone spending cash on this game.
I think price should not have been part of this review, since it taints the review. It is fine to mention how price affects the game, but it should not factor into the score. Just judge the game for the content, don’t assume based on an imaginary person’s wallet. Otherwise every free to play game like fortnite or mario kart tour will never get reviewed properly.
@Zeldawakening Fortnite isn’t pay to win though lol. Buying a skin that doesn’t affect gameplay is one thing, but if a game has any p2w at all, that makes it a worse game. This is as bad as FIFA in my opinion.
No mention of performance or opinions on the visual/audio presentation? Ease of finding other players online?
Ain't gonna get this if only because of what kind of game it is. But good to see people enjoying it.
Already uninstalled got boring too fast still the only good free to play game on Switch is Ninjala no other free game comes close to beating it
So many comments saying it's pay to win, well, I haven't paid a single penny and I regularly get MVP, so I guess the people I'm playing against must be really bad... or the claims are mostly BS. Patience and good comprehension of the flow of the game are way more important than any item.
@kducky11 the fee structure in freemium games is a person by person preference. A lot of people pay the micro transactions or dint pay at all for these types of games like FIFA, so I think focusing on the content instead of the pay structure keeps the reviewer from giving a bias take on free to play games. It is fine to mention the pay structure, even put it in red or a section all to its own, but it probably should not be factored into the review score. Your view on freemium games isn’t shared by everyone, as seen by how profitable FIFA and Mario Kart Tour are, so just judge the base game or content for what it is. I haven’t paid a penny to Mario Kart Tour for instance, but I have a great time with it still and would rate it a 9 or 10 out of 10. However, a lot of reviewers focused too heavily on the micro transactions and I consequently felt they did not actual review the game without payment or with payment because they only reviewed one side of the equation.
People thinking that the P2W players won't get better along with you are in for a rude awakening when they start getting beat. If they are giving you trouble now, while they're still learning the game, imagine the whupping you'll get once they do learn.
And I'm sure they'll continue to add more things to level up or sink money into so that P2W players are always clearly ahead. It's how they keep the whales invested and the F2P players grinding away.
"pay to win that feels like it's at the forefront"
Frankly, a lot of the pay-to-win complaints started with initial impressions, before anyone got to know the meta. A week after launch tge "pay-to-win" players were already givven a run for thaeir money, from more experienced players.
Are there non-cosmetic micritransactions? Yes.
Is that ok? No.
Are the players who pay at a huge advantage? not nearly as much as people think.
You'll have a much greater advantage by communicating with team members and squading up with friends you know are competant.
Also, I can't believe EA players out of all people fought back against Star Wars Battlefront's P2W mechanics and yet Nintendo players won't.
Unfortunate.
@ATaco andl by that point I'll have fully maxed out viable builds on my mains, as well. Besides people learn faster with an underdog advantage.
@Zeldawakening i like that. Unless the "free" version of the game is utterly unplayable or completely changes how I play, it shouldn't affect tge review.
Honestly, as much as I love pokemon, this just doesn’t interest me. I’m never going to pay a cent and I’m just not in the mood for a grindfest right now. Still, if you’re into this kinda thing, it looks fun enough. To each their own.
Pay to win games like this are always a hard pass for me. Just sell the game for a fixed price, and make the DLC cosmetic only. Pay to win is super toxic.
@Dilly-Mick
That's not how Microtransaction heavy games work. As soon as you get close to reaching a P2W player, they'll add a new mechanic, a new currency... SOMETHING new to grind for that they'll be able to easily skip by paying and will yet again put you at a disadvantage.
My point is that just because you're personally fine with predatory microtransactions in a game targeted to kids, not everyone is and acting as if the complaints are exaggerated comes off as misinformed.
@FightMikes in five more days more days that skin will scream I logged in for 14 days straight EDIT:i was thinking of greninja
Joking aside, this seems to be tge common consesus for most peoole who actually givevtge game a chance
Fun > expectations > P2W in the game
Also, just to add, I would rather play against someone who has paid for an advantage than along side someone who doesn't help out when a nearby team mate is in trouble. Guess what? Once they've merked me, they're gonna merk you too! If you had put a shift in we would have wiped them out!
@ATaco funny you say that because if that were the case how am I, a casually committed free to player, less tgan two days away from maxing out my #1 main? (And no immediate updates in sight) other free
-to-playeers are already topping the leaderbord in master rank
And the game has only been out for a week.
Coukd the microtransactions get worse? Yes. However, as of right now, you can catch up in less than a week (the more competiftive F2Pers already have) and just because that's how it usually works doesn't mean all "P2W" games will be
Point is, having actuoallyh experienced the game, and it's community... I dont endorse the microtransactions but they are exagerated... For now at least
While I personally hate the idea of paid advantage, that doesn't stop everything about them in this review from being complete and utter hogwash, the likes of which would make your average flat earther go "dude, tone it down a little"
"Players could grind for hours on end to upgrade one Held Item to level 10 or 15 - or spend $100 from the start to purchase Item Enhancers"
Wow, holy crap are neither of these statement even in the proximity of reality. As you level and as free daily bonusses you earn tickets. 10 of them will get you an item enhancer, and after 9 days of casual play I have 5000. That's ON TOP OF the two completely maxed out held items I already have just from directly getting item enhancers for free. If you DID want to pay to make that go even faster, you're looking at closer to $10-$15, unless you want to have 3 maxed out items before you play your first match and get all the free enhancers.
"The inevitable Battle Pass grants cosmetics, extra Item Enhancers for Held Items, and Aeos Tickets which can be exchanged for useful items."
Did you play the game? Like honestly, at any point in writing this review did you log on, look at the menus, or is this just compiled from fanboy raging over the pay model? The battle pass offer aeos tickets, enhancers, and coins ... FOR FREE. Like ... the opposite of having to pay. BUYING the battle pass unlocks a new reward at every level, which is almost always a cosmetic. While their are a few extra tickets going to people who buy the pass, this still a complete misrepresentation. It's not like DOTA or most MOBAs where you have to buy the pass to get anything. You get a ton of rewards from the battle pass at no cost.
To be clear, I still think the paid advantage is stupid and a real negative to this game, just not anywhere NEAR the level it's hyped up here. I should also note that my win rate is in the mid 70% range with ZERO MONEY SPENT.
I honestly don't know if the person writing this just didn't invest any real time in looking at the systems or if they are trying to piss people off so they cry "PAY TO WIN" and comment more, but this is not in any way an accurate breakdown of the way it works. Again, 9 days in, zero money, no extreme amount of play time, I've unlocked 5 additional Pokémon and have 2 maxed out held items, and could easily have 2 more if I bought enhancers with my tickets.
But I want a cat suit.
I prefer Yokai Watch Blasters / Busters 2 3DS over than Pokemon Unite.
@nessisonett they are completely free, play a couple hours every day and you can cap them out in a week
@Dpishere at the very least people who put in more time will still have an advantage called experience
Also, ever heard of a feedback loop?
I thought I was going to hate it but after trying it I think it’s great!
@Miyamotosan Exactly, this game is significantly less frustrating than other MOBAs (the shorter matches and lack of live score counter contribute to that)
It's much worse when you loose b/c of a stark difference in teamwork, between your team and your oponants, than when you are just simply at a disadvantage for most of the game. (Paid or otherwise)
@Dilly-Mick And the flipside is so satisfying. Even without direct communication, you can be in total sync with one or two other people, you know what they're going to do because you would do the same thing. You work as a team in perfect harmony and sweep your opponent. That's what I love about this game, and if people need to pay for a little advantage, so be it. As long as we're all having fun.
Played this game alot, haven't spent a penny. Got a Cinderace, the same Cinderace was a reward for logging in a few days later so instead of giving me a the same pokemon again the game gave me the 8000 coins that Cinderace cost me instead. Now have nearly 18000 coins and winning over 55% of my games.... All without spending a penny 🤷♂️
This game is...not pay to win, a 1% advantage isn't a make or break for anything other than the highest level of play.
Wile I will agree this game is pay to win in a sense, its really rare to meet people who have such items, I have gotten my leftovers to level 20 without spending a dime, and I'm having a blast, Maybe in higher rankes you will see stuff like that, but for the most part, its pretty rare to happen.
What we really need to talk about is that coin cap.
@Finntendo64 Oh you did? thats great to hear.
@HeadPirate Like really, I got level 20 on my leftovers on my first day of play, I already got a few items to level 20, and I feel likes its a pretty good level.
At the rate I've been earning the various currency, I feel like a couple months of daily play could get you a fully maxed out lvl 30 held item, or at least get several held items up to lvl 20. It feels extremely pay to win now because there's only been a week or two to start collecting. I'm sure long term players choosing free-to-play will close the gap in due time.
But if people want to drop roughly $50 per item to max out so they can get a leg up on season 1, just let them. Hopefully, if they rake in enough cash during the release, then they can put it back into the development team to keep it fresh.
I'm not trying to white knight Tencent here by any means. But I don't think it will end up being as much of an issue as time goes by. Granted, we don't really know what direction the game will take in the coming months, so it may shift to favor the whales entirely, unless they make a push to soften the meta to retain new players.
@HeadPirate
Yeah, I feel the comments about this being a P2W are overblown. You capture it perfectly that it is a negative element, but it isn’t the fun-sucking vampire others are making it out to me.
Apart from the gameplay, Pokémon Unite is a reskin of Arena of Valor. In AoV, the arcane elements are the P2W mechanics, and they never felt like they had a large impact on the game. Bad teammates or my own poor playing are typically why I lose. Go figure.
My biggest gripe is that it’s simplistic compared to other MOBAs. I’m enjoying my time thus far, but I don’t think I’ll devote the hundreds of hours into it like I did with AoV.
This was pretty fun when everyone was around the same level but now that the gap is widening between ftp players and pay to win players it’s getting less fun and more frustrating knowing I’ll never drop a penny on this.
@Dilly-Mick I have indeed, but in a game this competitive and skill based I don't think there should be a reward that makes you better inherently better, would prefer complete fairness for newcomers and veterans alike, that way victories are won via the ability of the player and nothing else. There are plenty of ways to provide rewards that do not give you buffs to damage and such, stuff that is just fun to have like cosmetic items, proof of the time you put in the game.
Some guy on YouTube bought all the upgrades and was just destroying everyone, what is the point of that lol, they need to change it so that everyone starts each game equal!
@adamatsu
A sample size of 1 with no control isn't a really good way to gather information.
I spent zero money and won 22 games in a row with Camorant. If you watched me in YouTube while I was doing that would you be posting that the game has no pay to win at all and people with no items crush at the game?
@HeadPirate yea but the extra advantage is ridic, watch it https://youtu.be/xyRFGxncuAk
@adamatsu
If the extra advantage is ridiculous, how did I win 22 games in a row against people who had it when I didn't? This guy doesn't win 22 games in a row.
The logical conclusion based on only these two data sets is that having paid items puts you at a disadvantage ... which is obviously false, which is why you can't learn anything from such a small sample size, ever.
Sample size has nothing to do with it, neither does how many games you've won with camorant lol. It doesn't matter how good the guy is, the point is he has a ridiculous advantage by spending a lot of money.
@adamatsu
You didn't answer. If there is such a huge advantage, why am I consistently winning without that advantage against people who have it?
@Dilly-Mick 😂😂 you’re the lucky one then, my 14 day is a Greninja license.
I agree though if you’re enjoying yourself and give it a chance, the Pay to win stuff goes out the window. That Pirate ain’t nothing lol
@HeadPirate the answer is obvious...do you think most people have paid out money like that guy..no...its a waste of money, however that doesn't change the fact this is a pay to win game.
@adamatsu To me it looked like he used in game money, to buy upgrades, And had them to level 20- or about, I forgot, I have my items around there and I still get destroyed, lost three times in a row, Ya items doesn't make up for skill.
I literally got Lucario after playing a handful of matches. It really isn't that difficult. I almost have enough gold for another Pokemon. And the maxed out held items aren't that difficult to get either, and only give a minor edge anyways.
That's not to say it's a great game, but it's fun enough for half an hour a day. Which is great for the price of free.
@adamatsu I’m wondering how too, even with items fully upgraded the damage output is only 8 or so % different. Nothing major. In a lot of the videos I’ve seen people are either over leveled or they land a crit which is fair. No matter how much money you spend you have to implore some strategy to win
@adamatsu Pay to win would be more like, if I was playing a shooter, and I could buy a skin, with a smaller hitbox, Lets say, headshots are not on the top of his head, Its below around there, Trying to get a headshot in a spot that is, well not the head, would make it much harder to kill, therefore, making it a pay to win is some aspect.
@adamatsu
Untrue on two levels. I can see what the people I'm playing are using after the game and most people do have maxed held items, so it's not true they don't have them. It's also not true you have to pay money to get to that point, as I say in my post the only reason I don't have maxed items is a bought a cat suit with my free tickets. In almost every game it's me with crap items and 9 people who have better items then me. Not only should that mean I lose, but it also means I should never be MVP ... which I am in like 1/3rd of my matches.
So ... got another try?
The only advantage of paying anything in this game is if you upgrade your items sooner. The Pokemon themselves have to be balanced in their skill sets or the game would be flawed, which it isn't. The only advantage of having a more 'expensive pokemon' is if you want that particular one for some reason or prefer their style of play.... or because less people have it so you ate more likely to be able to use that particular one more often. You cannot design a moba game where there are stats that don't balance out. They have already nerfed the Chairizard and will continue to balance out things as needed. If the game was that flawed it would fail and make them no money at all. Watch some videos on YouTube on Stats etc and you will see that some of the best stats are with the free pokemon at the start of the game. So other than cosmetic, the only advantage of paying is in item upgrades and I haven't paid anything and have 1 on 20, 1 on 18, 1 on 11, one on 12. Just spend your vouchers on upgrade items and not cosmetics.
@FightMikes Yes thank you, Having a item that say pay to win, does not make up for skill, so if you had said skill, you could beat anyplayer with max items anyday, And I have heard people who have been playing ranked without max items little no no items at all,
I have like a level 15 item on and it works great, the max amount you need for an item to be is about 20, and with all the tickets they give you thats not hard to do at all.
I don't disagree at all that you need skill/strategy obviously but isn't the point of these games that everyone starts on a level playing field then gains more power? Having someone with a 10% advantage can make all the difference in a close game.
@SirDaffyd Once again this is also true, I paid to get greninja early but that doesn't mean I have some type of buff, its just a character and if its flawed it will be fixed, Well thats what you just said.
@adamatsu When does any game work that way? Every knew player is not going to be as good as the older ones, but with time they will get better, Even with said 10% advantage, everyone who has played the game for about a day or two, has that already.
@HeadPirate I dunno how long you've been playing but I've never seen players with all level 30 items
Hell argue with the dude on YouTube if you want, I'm just saying there is clearly a strong pay to win element here, still a cool game and I hope you guys are right that it isn't that big of deal. Also glad for your 22 win streak camorant dude, congratulations.
@adamatsu
Irrelevant. The people I'm playing against to have them, likely because I'm in a higher skill bracket and almost exclusively playing people who have been playing from day 1.
So again, explain how I'm beating them and out preforming them.
@HeadPirate because you are a gaming genius with unparalleled skills and should be the captain of the pokemon unite national esports team, happy now
@adamatsu
Nope. That doesn't fly either, as I'm playing ranked games my skill level isn't much different then everyone else, and even if it was that means the items can't provide much of an advantage giving you can overcome it with some skill.
Tossing your hands up in the air rather then just accepting that maybe the one YouTube video overstates the problem is a pretty bad look. There is no shame in changing your opinion based on the new evidence being presented not just by me, but basically everyone replying to you that says it's not a big deal. There is a lot wrong with not changing your opinion based on new evidence, however.
@SirDaffyd I think its cool that it doesn't do that gacha thing where you end up with another of said item it doesn't just throw 10 cents at you, they refund it for you, which I like.
@HeadPirate agreed it does seem the dude overstated it! Good news this encourages me to play on!!
Watching critikal drop $200 and dominate every match he was in quickly was quite a sight.
Hopefully not a harbinger of the future for the series.
I never pay on free to play games, i'm a cheap skate and if I know I can have something for free one day, then i'll always go the free route. Even if it takes months. But I have patience and don't need everything now.
In terms of this game, I don't find you "need" to pay to win. Especially as its a team game. I could be a weak link and scrounge a win from the whales on my team. Or just play a bit clever and get points from the pokemon in the middle sections, away from attacking players and hide in the grass until i see an opening to get some good goals (points).
I try and look how the opponents play and see if they're stronger than me, before deciding to be sneaky or go attack mode.
Only thing I don't like is near the end I have only a small idea on if i'm winning or losing. I wish they would have a score tracker, so I know whether to attack or defend at the end. Normally don't bother defending much because I am worried my team is losing. But with a score tracker that would change how I play and probably a lot of people.
Is hating people with small amount of free time, like at best 5 hours of free time totally for them selfs per week, is now word standart, then WTH? Serious, I'm totally person who plays Free to Play games without spending real money at all cause it's free game to begin and I still don't feel at disadvantage at all, just because they added a ways for people with really/extremely low free time to catch up.
@SViper This Reviewer just saw the first thing that people crapped on about the game, and made a review on it.
@Snatcher I see, because literally most of the Free to Play Games has catch up ways for people with low free time.
Maybe the reviewer is just bad at the game? I'll remain f2p but I've already nearly got 3 held items maxed, bought Greninja for 10k coins and almost have enough for another Pokemon. I really haven't seen any p2w and honestly there really even isn't such a thing since it's pretty easy to Max your items and having more Pokemon doesn't give you an advantage, just choice..sooo I'm really not sure what the hell this review is on about. My guess is it's their first MOBA and just aren't very good at it.
@SViper LOL.
@UglyCasanova Or they when't into the game hating it bc Tenctent made it.
I deleted the game, nah I'm good.
RECAP (This thread is a mess)
I’m not defending the game, I’m pretty sure I would give it a 6 or 7, but the review is misleading around how currency and P2W works. I think people deserve facts so they can use their own judgement calls, and the lack of integrity show by publishing this is inexcusable. It is, simply put, a complete and deliberate lie.
1) The thing you need upgrade held items is obtainable without money. You will get more then enough for free to upgrade 3 items (the most you can hold) within a week or two.
2) If you forgo maxing out and instead chose to level your items to 10 (66% of their total effectiveness) you will be able to do that your first day with minimal effort.
3) You will get 3 free Pokémon if log on for 14 days. They will give you the coins to buy another for free within a few battles. Doing missions and 1-2 hours a day will get you a new Pokémon every week or so after that, all with no money spent.
4) It’s a MOBA. Some heroes are currently overpowered to the point of being broken. Even at high ranks your team will range from super humans that win by themselves to ones that are a hinderance to your team.
5) Items, relative to the factors above, have basically ZERO impact. The impact of simply picking a OP hero or having a single team member that is bad/good is orders of magnitude bigger. A video showing a difference is DPS against a test target is meaningless; like all MOBAs you win and lose based o positioning and reaction to the map, you never sit their holding auto attack and spamming skills. 95% of fights will be decided before they start based on who has more people present. That's just how MOBAs work.
6) The battle pass is free, unlike most MOBAs. You can earn additional items (mostly cosmetics) by buying it. People who buy it and people who do not spend any money will earn the items that help gameplay and the currency that can buy them at almost the same rate. You still get to do the daily quests and earn points without spending money.
7) These are just the facts. The P2W elements have almost no impact, you get tons of items and Pokémon for free, and you will not be at any measurable disadvantage without items. I personally think ANY level of P2W is awful, but you should have the information you need to make and informed decision for yourself, and it's not in the review.
You know the game is bad when the beta is more fun than the final release. I completely lost my respect for this game's marketing and micro-transactions.
Lost me at pay to win.
I can respect free to play games like Fortnite where the microtransactions are not needed but here they seem scummy.
If you ask a lot of “fans” on Twitter they’ll proclaim that it’s not pay to win and that you just need to hustle and get good insert eye roll here
Pay to win mechanics aside, it’s a fun little game. Having a good time with it so far.
> or spend $100
Wait. What? Are you ***** kidding me? How many better games could I have bought to keep forever with that money?
And how the ***** are we still calling such expenditure "microtransactions"??
People in the comments completely ignoring anything written by others, and coming just to insult the game for being P2W when it's clearly not for anyone who has played for more than a bunch of matches...
Anyway, discussions about the microtransaction aside, this game can be a lot of fun and that's is what matters.
I don't even understand the points about having to grind, it's not like you go around killing the same enemies over and over again to level up like in an RPG, here you obtain everything you need by doing matches, wich is what the entire game is all about.
It's not time wasted by any means if you like it (and if you don't, what even the point in playing it).
@GoldenSunRM Just remember, the reviewer is LAW!
@CodyMKW
Fortnite is free 😎
i love the game. don’t care about the pay2win for myself otherwise i would not play. but general spoken pay2win is crap
At this point it's a mad dash to choose Gardevoir 1st and if you didn't just hoping whoever did knows what they are doing.
@Gravitron Only a few matches where I played with or against Gardevoir. Plus if they are really overpowered they can always tone them down a bit. I hardly ever see the same matchup twice. Most Pokemon are viable.
It's dumb but the thing that bugs me is how a bunch of the Pokemon in the roster don't evolve in this when they have evolutions. It seems all baby forms are ignored, so Wigglytuff starts as Jigglypuff not Igglybuff and Lucario, Snorlax and Mr Mime just stay as they are the whole way through despite having lower forms they could start as. Then there's Pikachu who not only doesn't start as Pichu, also doesn't evolve into Raichu.
@FatWormBlowsASparky and Ninjala is better 😎
@adamatsu "that guy" had prior moba experience and bought all the items day 1.
A week later:
Players had figured out the meta
"Noobs" were playing less and/or getting better
Even casually committed players had caught up item wise.
Outcome:
"Pay to win" players' head start became meaningless.
Unrelated: if that "Lucario: bandit style" holowear from the beta etnds up being premium battle-pass only, I will buy it.
Lucario and the mystery of mew (AKA mew and the wave guiding hero, for those who watch the original japanese) is what cemented my love for pikemon.
@Dilly-Mick cool, yea, I'm struggling to get more than 1 item to level 20 but it seems people on here have no issue getting them up there for free. Not sure how they're managing it but out of energy to argue the point, and happy to accept its not a game breaking difference to "pay to win ".
It's been a lot of fun so far. I look forward to seeing more Pokémon added!
@eaglebob345 You are pretty much right on this. The major problem I see with the game currently is the cap on coins for a week which disincentivizes playing the game. And that there is a tiny roster of playable Pokemon leading to the same ones in every match. I have a feeling that in 2-3 months they will have added a good amount of new pokemon and they may address some of the bigger community complaints. It may be a little boring now but with more variety it will get better.
@adamatsu sorry about, i should havve realized the point had been hammered hard enough already.
Innocous quuestion: are you aware that item upgrades are a resouurce system not an exp system?
Maybe the reason upgrading is so hard becasuse you just didn't know how tto upgrade them (X -> battle prep -> held items -> <select item> -> upgrade.) You cann also exchange tickets for item enhancesrs in thevAos emporium Or maybe you already knew that and I'm being completely unhelpfull.🙃
Free-to-Play is really Free-to-Start. Why do people think all the effort in producing a game should be Free Forever?
It is a terrible concept but fits development and marketing schedules really well and throws the players into a blender.
Even the ones that start out great like Gems of War end up being a total clusterhole of poking you to pay pay pay for less less less the longer the game exists.
BotW is a better fit in giving a great game for upfront cost and then adding things in DLC that expanded the experience but didn't feel it was locked away from release.
@GoldenSunRM Thanks for the real review. As for people crying about spending money, those same people will grind for pixels all week and then complain that someone spent 4 hours working a gig on the weekend to pay to get the same amount of progress.
@Dilly-Mick thanks yes I actually didn't realise all the options at the time, thanks. I now have a lvl 18, 19 and 20 item, tho taking me ages to get up any higher than that!
This game is fantastic. Great gameplay, easy to learn and very nice mechanics. It is also fun to play small duration maps and create strategies. I am playing for a week or so and I am already ahead with items and unite cards.
However, it suffers from a lot of issues. As every MOBA game, single player lobbies are prohibitive! You cannot just play solo because 7/10 times you will get teams that are useless and do not know the basics of the game. No, kills do not win, this is not LoL. There are also some highly unbalanced characters such as cinder ace and lucario. Even one more level than you, they one shot you early game. Unbearable. Finally, it is pay to win, period. a person who paid money to gain extra stats through held items, has an advantage and this is shown in ranked plays.
Good game, lots and lots of room for improvement.
Fun for a few hours. After a while, you can tell which team is going to win within the first 2 minutes and then spend the next 8 in boredom watching it happen. Even expert ranked mode gets you paired with a Snorlax that dives an enemy goal with 4 defenders. Losing constantly to that gets really old.
Decent MOBA, and it's free. Try it out. But don't say you weren't warned.
Frustrating trash game quickly dying, as it should. Unbalanced, bugs, trolls, afk, bad matchmaking, slowly becoming pay to win and nonsense gameplay. You will enjoy 2 out of 10 games. Very few people left playing this game that you will always get matched with bots in normal games and sometimes even on ranked games.
