Earlier this week, Nintendo announced it would be reducing the price of the base model Switch to £259/€269 across Europe, ahead of the OLED model launch on October 8th.
If you happen to be located in the US and were hoping for something similar, it seems this won't be happening. Axios Gaming newsletter co-author, Stephen Totilo, has been in contact with Nintendo of America, and has been informed there'll be no price changes happening in this market.
Nintendo tells me yesterday's Switch price drop was just for Europe (and the UK): “The trade price adjustment is for the European region only. There are no plans to change the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price for any Nintendo Switch model in the U.S.”
So, if you were hoping to pick up a base model Switch at a lower price in this location, don't expect to see any official price cuts any time soon. Although some might consider the asking price a bit much for the original system, sales of the system are still going strong. You can pick up an original model for $299.99 or a Lite for $199.99.
On a somewhat related note, Nintendo has released a new Switch firmware update in preparation for the release of the OLED model. Were you hoping for an original model price cut in the US? Tell us below.

This is clear favoritism. First they get the free Daemon x Machina trial, and now this.
Darn you, Reggie!!!
Fair enough, Europe always got the short end of the stick. This just evens things out somewhat.
@JasmineDragon balance.
@JasmineDragon 😂
Because they know we're all chumps. Especially in Canada where its $400
You can still buy secondhand switches for 200$ sometimes even with games and extra controllers
@Aurumonado Pretty sure the price did drop in Canada, but not by much. It's $380 now from what I can tell.
$299.99 US equal to £217.51 Pound sterling so it's still cheaper in the US
With the chip shortage, and strong switch demand, I haven't been expecting a price drop for the US. Less is always welcome, though.
@Desrever
You mean Doug Bowser?
Makes sense. Switch was once again the best selling hardware here in the States for like the 33rd month in a row(August NPD).
@JasmineDragon actually europe has gotten alot of goodies and such that i would have loved to come to usa.
Well that's fine I guess I don't need to get another Switch then. I got a Series X anyway.
In Europe the money system is different from ours so thats why they do it.
Lame guess Wal-Mart is getting more money then.
No, my third cousin’s friend who works at a coffee shop overheard a conversation between 2 Youtubers who read a Reddit thread that confirmed that the Switch will be receiving a permanent 80% price drop and that Platinum Games hired Keanu Reeves to play Ridley in Metroid Prime 4.
Just because official information states something, doesn’t mean it’s true.
Sarcasm.
This is outrageous, it's unfair!
That’s fine, everything is more expensive in Europe than in the US, even if you calculate the taxes. Last year I went to US to buy some stuff for that reason.
Makes sense. Europeans were overpaying anyway. It’s not a 1:1 conversion rate. Besides retailers will cut prices for BF anyway. That being said, price comparisons should be made with Japan and not the US anyway.
@SeaFishelle No, that would be the pandemic and it’s messed up every economy.
Still happy with my switch lite I got for $180 on an Amazon sale about 6 months ago.
I heard you can get a free Switch if you get double jabbed in some states.
Where I’m from, we pay about 525 dollars incl. taxes for the new Switch OLED. Anyone in the US even close to that? Didn’t think so, so don’t you dare complain about this price drop.
I think the European price is still a bit much for a four year old console (let alone American)
@Clyde_Radcliffe yes but as long as it sells well, no need for them to lower it further
Well Europe as had it rough so I will let this slide.
@ItsJustAnotherGamer
Don't European prices include tax? US prices don't.
Europe is always more expensive unfortunatley. So this is good news. I'm from Switzerland, and Nintendo Games are usually almost double the price from the US. If you search the eshop prices, Switzerland is always to most expensive. Good that we can at least change the region now.
@Would_you_kindly Prices include VAT in Europe, which is generally higher than in the US
@Would_you_kindly don't even get me started on how much more ps5 games are over here
@Screen That was a thrilling comment!
Yeah we in Europe often get shafted by the consoles price being directly converted from usd price 1 to 1.
Plus games are way more expensive and always have been. Like average new switch game is equivalent of 65- 71 dollars .
An upcoming ps5 game is like 95 dollars
Change rate in europe is clearly why this is happening. And moreover amazon ships across the atlantic, so you can buy in europe and import in the US
To anyone who thinks this is unfair.
We can trade prices if you want.
My new price with the price cut is 2990 SEK. (Which equates to $349.)
Again this is after the new lower price.
It used to be 3600 SEK ($418)
Prices listed with tax included.
Stephen Tostitos
do they have plans to let us buy the oled thing?
@Jeaz people have the right to complain about whatever they like.i mean you just complained about other people complaining.see how that works
The US price already was lowered to 300$ right? Also the dollar is at a low value compared to euro. So this is more a price correction than anything.
269 EUR is 317 USD at the time of this writing, so don’t worry, Europeans still pay more.
It will happen.
You guys are literally comparing numbers. Does anyone know what currency value is?
@Aurumonado 400CAD is €266, so the price is finally the same.
@ivory_soul What's a currency when you got the bigger numbers?
@Octane I never said the numbers were bigger. People are comparing 269 euros to $269 USD without realizing what the conversion is.
@ItsJustAnotherGamer
Oh, I'm not at all doubting that Europeans will pay more than Americans for the same product.
It's just that ($300 + tax) vs €300 is not nearly as bad as $300 vs €300.
Imo the Lite will probably get a price drop once it's sales start slowing "post" pandemic (I know it's still going on, but here in the states you wouldn't know it if you don't frequent hospitals or schools)
Well, I have no plans to buy the OLED so...
Lol, this is interesting...
Inflation is running rampant in the US. Probably why we aren’t getting a price cut.
I'm just in knowing if they'll have a OLED Lite model or not.. I'd jump on that in a second!
@Darkyoshi98 groan. You need to lighten up. (I don't mean that literally, so don't set yourself on fire, please)
