This week marks yet another major milestone for the best-selling Nintendo Switch title Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. If you saw yesterday's Japanese charts, Famitsu sales data reveals the game has now surpassed four million sales in Japan.
Yep, that's right! This reportedly makes Mario Kart 8 Deluxe the fourth Switch game in Japan to surpass the four million mark. It's previously been achieved by Animal Crossing: New Horizons (over 6.8 million units), Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (around 4.4 million units), and Pokémon Sword and Shield (4.3 million units).
In terms of global sales, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still well out in front as the best-selling title. As of 30th June 2021, it's sold 37 million copies. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is in second place, with 33 million sales and Smash Bros. takes third place with 24 million sales. Overall this week, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe placed fourth in Japan's charts, just underneath Ring Fit Adventure.
While Nintendo appears to be well and truly done with this Mario Kart 8, earlier this year it did surprise fans with an incredibly minor update for the game that fixed a few issues. Have you contributed to Mario Kart's success on the Nintendo Switch? Are you still playing this game on a regular basis? Tell us down below.

This game was fun, but good lord above the sweats online sure made me want to rip my hair off.
Would be great if Nintendo released more tracks, clearly the game is selling well so why not support it?
They either need to make an actual sequel or add some DLC.
I still like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe but i rarely to play that game since last 2 years ago.
I think that now everyone on whole planet Earth own's a copy of Mario Kart Deluxe. Trees, bees, Wanda from the Fairy Odd Parents to the Power Rangers at the Zordon HQ. Hopefully in the near future Nintendo anounces something regarding a new Mario Kart game.
@Arkay Surely many developers from mario kart team keep working on mario kart tour, that's why I think they have not release another main game.
I’d personally like to see a Nintendo cart myself.
Nintendo needs to bring back all the past missing features of the Mario Kart franchise. We need a double dash mode, unique character specific power-ups, mission mode, and an Adventure Mode similar Crash Team Racing and Diddy Kong Racing or a Story Mode that expand through the vast universe of the Mario, Zelda, Animal Forest, Pac-Man, Yoshi, Wario, Donkey Kong, Captain Toad, or whatever franchise are connected to the Mario universe in Mario Kart.
I bought this game 3 times. The Wii U digital (I bought on a sale, but I don't have access anymore), a Switch physical (That I sold for a higher price than I bought it) and a Switch digital (bought on a sale too, my last copy)
@DoubleDate Wanda from the Fairly OddParents lol, what? 🤣
It's a great game. But I am tired of playing with it since 2014. I'll wait for the sequel whener and wherever it will be released. In the meantime, I'll keep playing Mario Kart which is a great game on its own way.
@Specter_of-the_OLED or at least bring back Mission Mode from MK:DS
Mario Kart 8 DX shipped 5 million retail + digital copies in Japan as of June 2021.
Amazingly enough, Japan only accounts for ~13.5% of its total worldwide sales.
@DoubleDate "Zordon HQ" 😂
It was the 'Command Centre'.
As a PR fan, I had to get that out 😅
❗I never really liked this Game, SMK7 or SMKWii.
My favourite SMK Games are, in order:
1️⃣Double Dash
2️⃣MK: Super Circuit
3️⃣MK DS
Nice!
Got it as a birthday present the same year I got the Switch. I'm not a big Mario Kart fan, mostly plays it couch co-op when I have friends over.
I wonder if Metroid Dread can ship 3 million in the first year...
I'd love to see a new entry with a bit of a mix with Split Second formula.
It would be insane to have the possibility to change the track during the race in a MK game.
Cool!
Can't wait to see Mario Kart 9 maybe on the next console at this rate as Mario Kart 8 just keeps selling lol
@Branovices,
From those sales it's pretty evident they do not need to do anything, as much as I would love a new game.
I go back to it every few months to play all the cups but it’s definitely outstayed it’s welcome now…..I’d happily settle for more DLC
@johnvboy Yeah… as sad as this is, I think it’s true.
Still, if Mario Kart keeps selling without any extra input, maybe that opens the doorway for a certain other racing series to be revived.
@Yorumi,
All the original DLC is there, there is just no additional content for it, although I doubt the target market was the people that bought the Wii U version, and the game is pretty awesome value for what it is, assuming you did not already own the Wii U version.
Line the game on WiiU, but I will not buy it twice. Just waiting for Mario Kart 9 😁
@johnvboy Well actually there is additional content. 8 Deluxe does not have an embarrassingly bad battle mode. Seriously wtf were they thinking with that horrible battle mode on the WiiU
And you guys wonder why MK9 has not even crossed Nintendo's minds? Why should they even bother at this point? They are selling a 4-year-old game at FULL PRICE and it's still a consistent best-seller every.single.month. No other game developer can say this about any of their games.
the best Mario Kart game.
can’t wait to see what they’ll come up with in the next installment.
(I am not a fan of World Tour)
I wonder exactly how Super Mario Odyssey is doing. That game needs to keep up in sales or I’ll cry. 😄 (At least it passed the 20 million mark, but I really think it deserves 30+ million in lifetime sales.
Plain and simple after nearly 8 years on the market its time for something new. But Nintendo is hung up on gimmicks, or as they call them innovations (i.e. MK Live). We will NOT see a new MK until we see a new system. Which in the current chip shortage situation will not be that soon. Hell the PS5 and Xbox Series whatever cant even get on store shelves right now. Nintendo has a captive audience right now (the pandemic, the shortage of competitor's systems). Now is the time for them to strike and strike hard. They need to listen to the consumers, they need to read complaints like all the ones on this and every MK discussion page. A brand new MK would easily break 4 million in no time. DLC (as long as priced right) will be a sure fire seller.
@Bearzilla823 agreed totally. I think we have a chance at seeing it next year. Isn’t it 30 years old? I know they aren’t big on anniversaries, but this is their biggest franchise.
I get the business aspect, but most people have been playing this for at least five years with many having played it for almost eight. I am seriously losing interest and will probably get an Xbox as soon as they are available.
@steely_pete,
Yes and all the paid for DLC included in the package, plus 1080p 60 fps, an awesome deal even for existing Wii U owners of the game.
@Yorumi,
To be fair some sort of loyalty bonus for Wii U owners of the game would have been nice, although I sold my Wii U copy before the Switch came out, got a pretty decent price for it as well.
This is why we won't see MK10 til Switch 2. Guessing MK Tour is actually the 9th 'proper' entry in the series, maybe.
They won't do dlc as it is the Ultimate version of MK8 too.
It’s like Nintendo’s GTAV. Not bad.
the games 150cc mode is not the same as the old 150cc mode it is like the 100cc mode, i would not buy the game because of this , i did contact nintendo but they said to check you tube videos or online information about it. i should not have bought it very disapointed. i do'nt think the update did anything with it.
