Nintendo has just surprised us with an update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. This is the first time the Switch version has been updated since January 2019.
So, what's the latest one for? If you were hoping for new content such as tracks and characters, we're sorry to say but Version 1.7.2 resolve a few minor issues.
Here are the full patch notes from Nintendo's support website:
Ver. 1.7.2 (Released May 25, 2021)
- Addressed an issue that caused tournament points to be reset.
- Addressed an issue that caused match history with friends to be reset.
So, there you go - even after all this time, Nintendo is still showing at least some support for this game that originally started out on the Wii U in 2014.
The Switch release (as of 31st March 2021) also remains on the top of the charts as the best-selling Nintendo Switch game around the globe - shifting a whopping 35.39 million units since its release in 2017. This update to Mario Kart follows a surprise online update for Super Mario Party at the end of last month.
If you're one of the people who have only recently picked it up, perhaps you'd like to check out our guide on how to build the fastest kart?

Was hoping for some enhanced stability to improve the user experience, but I'll take what I can get.
Prep for DLC…. Prep for DLC….. Prep for DLC
At this point we will reach true stability, we will all be converted to stable code and enter the stable switch singularity. all hail the stability updates, may our futures just be as stable as it.
It baffles me why Nintendo release these little fixes when there are more pressing issues like y’know, their utterly dire netcode. Pretty sure they can use our sub money to improve the online experience.
Nah just announce the next Mario Kart. I'm ready for a new game.
Well that was a pointless read.
And Nintendo STILL won't allow you to upload you racing replays to Youtube.
Missed opportunity for a Super Mario Maker 2 Hardhat Mario graphic.
Interesting, I'm assuming this won't be the last patch update since recently strings were found in Mario Kart Tour regarding 8 Deluxe connectivity (https://mobile.twitter.com/kart_tour/status/1393095746673651712)
Hopefully that entails some other meaningful content! It'd be nice to get some of Tour's characters since 8 Deluxe's roster is still kinda weak and characters in Tour like Diddy, Funky, Dixie, Birdo, Nabbit, King Bob-omb, and Pauline coming over would make it a lot better
@LaytonPuzzle27 that was a wiiu feature right? I think it was called mktv
"Nintendo should update Mario Kart 8 DX"
Monkey's paw: "Okay"
I will try to control my utter excitement. It's like watching paint dry without the toxic fumes.
Huh? There's a way to check on past users within the game? I don't remember seeing that on the Deluxe version. I remember you there was one on the Wii U version and you could even enter to their groups, but I cannot recall that option on the Switch version, it's been a while since I last played.
EDIT: Nevermind, I thought it was removed, but I forgot it was within the Friends menu.
I wonder if dataminers will be able to dig up some interesting new things from this update 🤔
I'd love to see some more classic tracks remade for MK8, especially Choco Mountain N64 and Block Fort for battle mode.
@Moonlessky Correct. It seems Nintendo has MKTV but you upload your replays on the Switch version.
As for video, the social media upload on WU, meaning to Youtube, was nice. An enhancement to that feature would be also allowing users to create videos of replays, and save them to the system, sd card, flash, or externally connected storage of some sort. (I also dislike the need to have a separate ac-adapter-powered harddisk drive for WU, unless I were willing to do fancy things to my console.). The benefit would be that when official support ends for uploading to certain sites, the user can still manually upload the video file to any place.
@cdmac I’m moving into my final year of a degree in software engineering, believe me I know how hard programming is. The difference between me and you and Nintendo is that they’re a billion-dollar corporation with the resources to remedy this. Which rakes in subscription money for a pretty poor service. I understand that they can barely eke out a decent connection from the Switch’s rubbish Wi-Fi card, and the fact it’s only USB 2.0 limits the technologies used to remedy this, and not everyone uses the Ethernet adapter, but it’s just plain shoddy. Smash just isn’t fun online. Mario Kart frequently has ‘invisible items’ due to the connection issues and such. Even free, it just wouldn’t be on.
@nessisonett The funny thing is, according to hackers like OatmealDome Nintendo HAS improved their netcode... but only for future games, not existing titles. That makes PERFECT SENSE, does it not?
Also, agreed. I play weird PC indie games with friends that have better netcode than Nintendo's products.
@Zach777 So you think they're going to drop DLC at the E3 Direct? I am not going to get my hopes, but it's possible. Some new hefty DLC or a Mario Kart 9 are really needed at this point.
@PikaPhantom @cdmac @vio I really have a feeling some sort of DLC or update is coming. Felt Doug Bowser was dropping a hint when he made that weird tweet about showing his parents how to play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe where he was wearing a Super Nintendo t-shirt.
Maybe I'm wrong but combined with the MK Tour connectivity datamining, this patch after so long and the Mario Party update after all this time it's a feeling I get.
@Bearzilla823
Best selling game on Switch says hi.
35+ million copies sold also says hi.
And this does not deconfirm Mario Kart 9 because they released a Splatoon 2 patch exactly one week after Splatoon 3 got revealed.
@nessisonett Lol netcode. It’s like the boogeyman of the online gaming world.
@Zach777 Yep, I think we'll get some DLC this E3 (announced or released) or a MarioKart 9 annoucement. I'm fine with either.
@ATaco MK8D is still selling like crazy. Even if MK9 is already in the works or maybe already finished at this point, it would be dumb for Nintendo to just stop a money making machine.
@cdmac Just for the record, presenting your credentials or experience doesn't help you in discussions on the internet. It just makes you look like a blowhard.
Haven't played the game since about the time if the previous update.
Was thinking of getting Beach Buggy though.
This explains why I always have 0 points in a tournament, oh no wait, it's just that everyone is just so darn good..
see you in three years for the next update, 'fixed the rotation of item boxes'
There's still hope for version 2.0 then. To be honest, the sales have been so good for Mario Kart, it wouldn't suprise me if Nintendo drop more tracks/racers around E3, based on franchises of the announced/shown games. So many people own the game it's advertising for Nintendo if they add to it via updates.
Bah, no folders in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe? Come on Nintendo, my filing cabinet launched with this functionality!
@cowntsikin
I really do not care if Nintendo keeps making money or not. I haven't invested any money into them. I'm just saying what I, as someone who has some more money to give them, wants.
Can anyone tell me why the game is so slow ( I mean 150cc ) no matter what kart combination I use the game is very slow. Anyone got some help here.😩
They should start adding friend invites to all their games... Im disappointed i thought they were doing it since they just did it on mario party.
@Ninfan - You probably need to provide more information and ask this in a forum to get more feedback. If you're just starting to play MK8, then there might be a few reasons why you feel you're slow. Turn off auto-steer, make sure you're drifting, use the stats screen as a guide when choosing your kart etc.
If you're playing online, everyone knows the track shortcuts so you will be left in the dust if you haven't practiced the tracks (although the game does try to pair you with people with similar online experience).
@EliteXeos dude I know its called sarcasm you should try it some time
A little free DLC would have been nice. A track or two as an appreciation for the massive support the fans have given the game. Nintendo I've noticed is kind of selfish...a bit greedy. Just an observation since I started buying their systems.
@Bearzilla823
Sarcasm never converts well online, even if it’s done decently.
For future reference though, using an “/s” helps.
