We're seeing a rather fun surge in new retro games, with the Game Boy being a platform that certainly draws in some enthusiastic developers. One of these is GreenBoy Games, which we highlighted earlier in the year in relation to a Kickstarter campaign for their game The Shapeshifter. Now it's announced The Shapeshifter 2, which will also have a Kickstarter campaign starting on 1st October.
As you can see in the image above it'll be a physical package with a code wheel and extras, but the key thing is that it'll have two cartridges. The developer is saying this is for a game mechanic, not for space, and that it's currently seeking a patent. It's also stating it's only possible on the hardware, that the patent 'can only be applied on games for Game Boy which try to replicate this mechanic'.
The whole principle of the first game was that you could become a range of animals that you touched, so perhaps that's taken further with this cartridge mechanic. In any case at this stage it's all a teaser with little detail, so we'll need to see what emerges.
It's interesting to see new games like this emerge for retro hardware; we'll keep an eye on the project's progress in the coming months.

It is interesting to experiment like this so I'll definitely keep an eye on it.
I am very cautious about supporting Greenboy Games though.
Reviews of their past games have not been good - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLepAgeE7EY - and there are things about the company I really don't like (they seem to be involved with cryptocurrencies which I despise).
Having said that, they respond well to criticism (genuinely accepting it without any hostility) and the games do seem to be improving. So, hopefully this one works out well.
This is pretty cool, will keep an eye on this project.
I'm intrigued! Now... I'm off to start charing up my OG gameboy with the modded USB-C battery!
Honestly would love to see more developers create new physical media for retro consoles! There's definitely a market for it.
I'm very intrigued by the 2 cartridge functionality. This seems really cool.
I always liked Game Boy graphics. The simplicity and green shades are nostalgic and iconic for me, even though I always prefered to play them on a Super Game Boy.
But I never like when devs can't make their mind up about designing a definitive title for their game. Is it Shapeshifter II or Shapeshifter 2? Inconsistencies like these suggest lazy design (even though in this case the whole package looks quite nice).
Two cartridges?
Shoulda taken time out to call Iwata on the ouija board.
Day 1 for the Code Wheel alone.
@papr there had been some newer games already made for older consoles. Even some for the Atari 2600.
