Nintendo's games are not only selling like there's no tomorrow but many of their upcoming releases are also dominating pre-orders. Video game retailer GameStop recently shared its top ten most pre-ordered Switch games in the US since 8th June this year.
Metroid Dread continues to be the most anticipated release and the Diamond and Pearl remakes - due out this November - are in second place. There's also a bit of third-party representation further down the list. Here are the top ten most pre-ordered Switch games at GameStop in recent times:
1. Metroid Dread
2. Pokémon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl Double Pack
3. Mario Party Superstars
4. Pokémon Legends: Arceus
5. Shin Megami Tensei V
6. Pokémon Brilliant Diamond
7. WarioWare: Get It Together!
8. Doki Doki Literature Club Plus
9. Sonic Colors: Ultimate
10. Advance Wars 1 + 2 Re-Boot Camp
Metroid Dread was also GameStop's top pre-order following this year's E3. The Pokémon games were on the same list, too.
In terms of the top-selling Switch games, earlier this month Nintendo gave us an update - revealing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still out in front (as of June 2021) - with 37.08 million sales worldwide.
Have you pre-ordered any of the games on the above list? Tell us down below.

Where is F-zero though? At position 11 then?
As mentioned before, this is basically all main Switch games that are coming out in near future.
Come on Metroid! So glad one of the best sagas ever is back.
I don't expect Metroid to outsell Pokemon, Mario Party and even WarioWare sadly but I do expect this to be top 3 or the best selling Metroid game to date
Pretty much everything worth getting through next year is on that list (aside from probably digital-only releases like Tetris Effect and Fatal Frame).
Good on SMT V for the strong-ish preorders. Makes me hopeful. I'd really love for it to get its Persona 5 moment.
I don't do any preorder.
I still busy to hunt old games from Wii, Wii U and Gamecube during this year.
Why are people buying more Brilliant Diamond than Shining Pearl?
Removed - trolling/baiting; user is banned
I typically buy my games months after release, generally on a decent sale. But Metroid gets me day 1 every time.
who in the world is still pre-ordering games from game stop?
@KBuckley27 at the Moment this forecast shows Metroid is out selling Warioware.
Let’s see what will happen by end of December.
Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania is actually number one. Just everyone doesn't know it.
It warms my heart to see Advance Wars scrape into the top ten. I hope it does well enough to warrant new entries in the future.
@Ralizah Crusin' and Danganrompa?
Metroid Dread looks like an XBL game from the 360 era. As much as I love the series, it's going to be a pass for now.
@DarkCojiro It would help if it was a new game. I love the series but was disappointed when it was only a remake of the first 2. The 3rd is actually my favorite for it's darker story.
A pretty decent list, though I'll just pick up Metroid Dread from Walmart when it drops. Hard to argue with the $10 discount.
@chapu2006 because Pokémon Brilant Diamond have the best legendary i guess.
so happy that Metroid Dread might become the best selling/best game of the franchise, octobre can't come sooner enough.
@Radpal its a mix of both the og team and mecurysteam. Mecury Steam is great though…
@Tyranexx Yep! Unless a certain store has the special edition, im going to walmart and crossing my fingers for the amiibo too
@Scrubicius with the rise of Metroidvanias, my guess is it will and be the best selling metroid to date
@Radpal Same. All the hype surrounding it is making a dull game look brilliant. It’s like people can’t look past the marketing and just see the game. I’ll be sticking with Super Metroid, I’m more than happy with it!
Apart from Advance Wars none of those games I have any interest in (ok maybe Sonic)let alone to preorder.
@Spoony_Tech Ideally we'd get a brand new game instead. I'm assuming they're doing a remake of the first 2 in order to see if there's still a demand for the series, though it's odd they've omitted the third entry. (which was my fave too!)
Thank goodness Advance Wars 1+2 is up there, albeit barely. Come on, support the series!
@GrailUK It’s number 1-10 on your preorder list! 😃
@WiltonRoots A like for you sir ^^
@Jey887 Ah yeah, looking forward to that Danganronpa collection, even though I already own the games on Vita. Curious to see how expanded Danganronpa S is as its own game.
@chapu2006
Because Pokémon is a cash machine and no matter how much people complain, they'll still pay money for it.
Nice to see Metroid doing well but im going to be waiting for a pre owned copy.
I'm not supporting Nintendo's ridiculous pricing structure - its 4x the price of competing metroidvanias like Axiom Verge 2, Hollow Knight and Ori.
I don't ever preorder games because why pay to wait, but I will be buying Metroid dread day one. That'll probably be it though for new switch games.
Metroid Dread will sell A LOT. Buying it day one!
So excited for Metroid. I think with the GIANT Switch userbase, the awesome look of the game and the hype it will easily be the best selling Metroid game of all time. Even if only 10% of Switch owners bought it, that's 9 million copies.
The Pokemon remake would likely be #1 if you combined all 3 SKUs (Double Pack + Brilliant Diamond + Shining Pearl), but this is nevertheless a very strong showing for Metroid Dread and further strengthens the likelihood of it becoming the best-selling Metroid game ever fairly quickly.
SMTV pre-orders are also quite good. As a point of comparison, SMTIV sold ~96,000 retail copies in its first 6 months in the US; SMTV could exceed that figure during it's launch week alone.
@Radpal Metroid Samus Return was amazing, i have faith Mercury Steam is gonna make Metroid Dread the best game of the franchise until Metroid Prime 4 release.
I'm pleased to see DDLC PLUS in the top 10! Still holding out for that collectors edition.
@BloodNinja I really doubt it's that. Despite the fact that Samus Returns wasn't perfect, many people (including myself) loved playing it. So seeing a game that's similar, but addresses the notable issues based on the videos and interviews (notably linearity, overreliance on counter in early game, and repetitive bosses) is enough to have people genuinely excited.
Like... it's not like people can't make up their own mind. Some people just happen to like what they see.
@link3710 I'm not convinced that people are seeing the full picture.
Blows my mind how much the double packs sell. I’m sure some are for two child families, but we all know that isn’t always the case.
Metroid Dread is gonna be a pretty significant release. Already looking like it'll become the best selling game in the series, just like what Three Houses and BotW did for their respective series. Switch software sells crazy so it wouldn't surprise me if that happens.
Game looks so good too, the last few months of year are looking strong for the Switch!
@EpicFusion47 If it's a day one buy and not an obscure release, I opt for Walmart lol. I did pre-order something through GameStop recently - Ys IX on Switch - but only because of trade-in discounts.
@Spoony_Tech 3rd? You mean Days of Ruin? That’s the 4th one. Advance Wars Dual Strike is the 3rd one and I think it’s the best one yet. It had it had its creative use of the dual screens. Days of Ruin just “ruined” the franchise and put it to sleep for more than a decade.
(Even though I liked it)
@fafonio Was there really 4? I don't quite remember that lol. Yeah Days or Ruin was actually my favorite because war isn't all colorful and cheery. It felt more down to earth and real to me. You had a villain in the mayor that you didn't expect and the game really made you hate him. Sure he wasn't meant to be the main villain but he was none the less.
@Spoony_Tech yeah… then you missed Dual Strike … you should really try it. In my opinion is the best one and can only be experienced on the DS. That’s why the series went in a hiatus, people didn’t really liked the change to a darker tone. And so it went into obscurity.
It was fine for me, anything Advance Wars is always great. Give me colorful AW, darker AW, I’ll play them all
@fafonio I actually played them all just forgot how close one and two were to each other in style.
I didn't care for Duel Strike as I felt it was trying to do too much at once. While still a good game it was my least favorite.
I don't think DoR killed the franchise at all. Almost any game released close to the end of a life of a system will get worse sales. The series never sold well to begin with but I'm sure it wasn't expensive to make either so I'm sure it profited. The main problem is it never sold well in Japan at all and Nintendo likes to cater to the Japanese market first.
Metroid Dread should be the highest selling Metroid game if it reviews well even in spite of the criticism from some of the Hollow Knight, Axiom and Ori crowd trying to undermine the game's value. Metroid 5 has been one of the most requested Metroid games, it appears to be a traditional Metroid experience and it is releasing on the red hot Switch. It has the best chance of any game since the original Metroid Prime to reach the series' peak. I'm not saying Metroid Dread will be the best Metroid game, I personally don't see that happening, but highest selling is very doable if not expected.
@BloodNinja you mean, not seeing your picture?
I’m not a huge Metroid fan, but I get why this is on top. Metroid Samus Returns showed there was an appetite for a traditional Metroid game. All I see is another way for Nintendo to bring more Metroid content to its fans, much like Mario adventure games have a 3D and 2D versions.
Besides Metroid Dread, I'm looking forward to No More Heroes 3 and Diablo 2 Resurrected.
I've got one of those pre ordered, but I also have hot wheels pre ordered too. I'm on the fence about monkeyball thanks to Banana Blitz but I'm hoping the reviews are gonna be good.
@Spoony_Tech actually I just learned that Days of Ruin never released in Japan. It only released 5 years later on the 3DS as part of a Club Nintendo download-only promotional Platinum product.
Dual Strike sold 390k
Days of Ruin 350k (with Japan it would have been higher)
I think it was more about the design of the game and not the difference in sales between entries. I remember many people and review sites complaining about the change of tone of the game. I was fine with it, but in a way the charm of the series was missing. I mean, you don’t buy AW for a gritty war style game. It’s been like that for around 10 entries since the NES and it’s little brother Battalion Wars used this light-hearted approach.
I liked the new approach, but it really felt like something else. I don’t remember that well but even the gameplay was altered quite a bit.
I mean, this was a series with pedigree since the NES days, just like Fire Emblem… and then… it just disappeared.
@EVIL-C have you tried wargroove or tiny metal on the switch? Wonder if they are good facsimiles or poor imitations.
@progx It's a result of dishonest marketing.
@PhhhCough The second Tiny Metal game copied AW nearly to the T and in some ways did things better. If you can find them on sale I recommend both Wargroove and the second Tiny Metal over the first. The first wasn't bad just wasn't nearly as good.
Hope it sale at least 6 million so everybody shut their mouth about a 2d game at $60
@PhhhCough Sadly I haven't tried either personally. The general consensus I've gotten is that both do appeal to fans of Nintendo's Advance Wars & Fire Emblem series', with Wargroove being better overall than Tiny Metal. TM was recently on sale too, but I held off cause AW 1+2 is right around the corner. 🤔
@Radpal I’m okay with Mercury Steam but I just hope the sound in Dread isn’t compressed and tinny. Both Castlevania and Metroid on 3DS has some awful sounding sound effects at times; really tinny and overall compressed-sounding. If that’s not present, and by god it shouldn’t be, I’m all set.
@westman98 I do recall it was in that six month time that Nintendo themselves pushed SMT4 with a not-insignificant deal of like $30 free eShop credit for buying both that and the Fire Emblem game out at the same time (I think it was Awakening).
Hell, yes. Samus is no. 1
After hearing people talk about how Metroid Dread has to do miracles to beat current Metroidvanias like Hollow Knight and Axiom Verge, I gotta greatly disagree, after playing both. Axiom Verge is incredibly disappointing and worse than any Metroid game I've played, and Hollow Knight wasn't anything impressive either, compared to the best Metroid games like Super, Fusion, and Prime.
I'm pretty sure Dread will trash the competition if these are among the best offerings.
@Scrubicius
The Switch library is already incredible and large. Does it matter if we don't get top games every single month?
@Cia Okay, not sure how your comments is referring to me?
A course, sure, why not, but if the list isn’t that special… if we had more games coming then it would be interesting to know what players are interested in. Yes, Metroid being number 1 are for some very interesting but is this really a big surprise?
@EpicFusion47 don’t get me wrong but the rise of Metroidvania games have been on the rise for years. I think it a hit cause it is a Nintendo IP during a very slow time of releases. Also it is Metroid! 😁
