Embroidery is very cool right now. Maybe it's the pandemic, maybe it's just that we're all desperately in search of a skill that will make us feel creative in an era in which our creativity is constantly monetised and turned into labour. Or maybe it's just that making things with pretty thread colours is fun! Who knows!
One of the most exciting trends in embroidery is the 3D effect — making artwork look like it is more than just thread on fabric. It's an extremely difficult technique that requires a lot of skill, and embroidery is already tricky enough as it is, but artist and threadmaster syd.stitch has it locked down.
Syd.stitch's work includes a lot of anime references, especially to the works of Studio Ghibli — she's stitched scenes from Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, and Howl's Moving Castle — but she says that "I embroider the stories I love," which also includes The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
The first Zelda piece that she posted was a landscape, showing BOTW's iconic Dueling Peaks:
Her latest piece is a stunning recreation of Lover's Pond, but instead of featuring the lovers from the game, Wabbin and Perda, the person looking in the pond is Link. And who does Link love? His friends, the Champions from his past. Excuse us while we do a little cry.
But finishing the piece came second to having a bit of fun. The 3D Link figurine went on a few little adventures before getting to the pond...
You can purchase Syd.stitch's embroidery pieces as prints and stickers on her website.

Really kate? Sew cool? I hate how much I love it!
Had no idea 3D embroidery was a thing. I can cross-stitch but it takes ages and you don’t exactly get much for your time. I spent most of Advanced Higher Art weaving, which just resulted in a tiny woven belt and my fingers scratched to bits and bleeding. Art is hard. Don’t art at home.
Wow, that looks great
Also, that tagline had me in stitches.
All these puns make me want to yarn.
@nessisonett Ya this is the first I'm seeing it as well.
@Snatcher Articles like this are one of life’s thimble pleasures.
this looks cool. nintendo fsns are so talented.
About that tagline: I asked a friend of mine if he could come up with anything better. He didn't, so I told him this was his fault
@KateGray You go, girl. Spin that yarn...
I do a lot of fiber crafts. Knitting, crochet, spinning, needle felting, a little cross-stitch, a little sewing. Been doing most of these things for many years.
I do okay - at least, I'm pretty darn good at crochet, proficient at knitting, and I don't completely embarrass myself in the other crafts.
But this right here, this is some next level fiber sorcery. I don't even have a pun to go with my comment, I'm just amazed.
