The Mortal Kombat series has shown outstanding longevity, moving beyond controversies over gore in its earliest days to becoming a major part of the current-day gaming scene. Latest entry Mortal Kombat 11 and even its Ultimate Edition have graced the Switch in a pleasant reminder that, when pushed, Nintendo's hardware can deliver some top-grade third-party games on the go.
Warner Bros. Games and NetherRealm Studios have now confirmed that Mortal Kombat 11, across all platforms and including the multiple editions, has now passed 12 million sales worldwide. The broader franchise has passed 73 million video game units too, so those are pretty big numbers for the fighting IP.
This year also brought the Mortal Kombat movie to cinema screens, which performed quite well considering its R rating and global circumstances.
Do you have Mortal Kombat 11 on Switch, or is it one you're still tempted to pick up on discount, perhaps? Let us know in the comments!

I have a few hundred hours on MK11 on my Switch, really wish they would re-release the Kold War Skarlet skins. I also have it on PC, but the majority of my playtime is on the Switch.
I bought it for a couple reasons, one being the story, really cool how they did it and it really feels like watching a movie.
If you haven’t picked it up grab it on sale, really worth it.
This game is honestly too brutal for me to play anymore, which is ironic because I love Doom Eternal and the Resident Evil Remakes. I read how the staff had PTSD after researching the gore for this version of MK 11 (probably have done it for others)
Just like Monster Hunter, i have played 500+ hours for this game on my switch, and that was fun!
Fantastic game and it was great to see them supporting Switch too. For a fighting game it's got a really good story and some amazing fan service for people who are old enough to play the original
I bought MK11 when it came out and haven't touched it since. It's just too ugly on switch. I recently deleted 18gigs worth of updates. I'll just stick with MK1-UMK3.
Amazing game. I was kinda scared because I felt the Switch couldn't handle it well, but the quality really shines.
The only raw moments are the intros where there is a totally different lightning and you can tell it's lowgrade, but you get used to it fast enough, and it doesn't affect the quality of the fighting (which is amazing).
It's impressive considering how many countries it's banned in.
Thats very impressive. King of fighting games is still Super Smash Bros Switch with like 24m
Any idea on how much switch accounted for. Wonder if it was able to hit 1 million.
@luxoricious horrible hair all around. Worst part visually for me.
Amazing game, the best 3D Mortal Kombat. I played it a lot on my Switch. Got it on launch day.
I got it on Switch when it was $14.99. Played it and it was great.
@Qwertyninty Yes, the hair is the worst part. By far.
But it doesn't look so bad when you're actually fighting, or maybe is not as noticeable as in the intros.
@luxoricious it’s just an eye sore for sure. I guess good on them for bringing the game to the switch.
Not very surprising when the game is almost always on sale - like 75% off. Happy it's on the switch and I've put in quite a few hours in it but honestly, it is not a really balanced game.
Imagine all the free money Warner Bros. and Netherealm Studio could easily make if they released all the past Mortal Kombat and Injustice games for Switch. MK1-XL, Shaolin Monks, Mythologies Sub-Zero, vs. DC Universe, Tournament Edition, Injustice 1 & 2, etc. Being able to play two of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles against Scorpion and Batman on the go would had been sweet.
$15 at a time. No bundles though, which is good for them. I enjoyed the game and the story, but beyond the story I couldn't get into the traditional MK towers.
Mortal Kombat 11 is about a year or so away from outselling Super Smash Bros Brawl and 3DS/Wii U to become the 2nd best-selling fighting game of all time. The launch of the Ultimate Edition and the release of the Mortal Kombat film has turned the game into a big evergreen hit.
Massive success for Warner Bros/NetherRealm.
It's on my never ending backlog but I've been hoping for some sort of physical "komplete edition" with all (if not most) on a cartridge. I'm pretty confident now that's not going to happen.
I really got most excited for when there was rumors of a HD re-release of Mortal Kombat Trilogy. LOL I'm still holding out on that rumor because that was always THE Mortal Kombat game of all time for me. Early 90's gamer here
@Kilamanjaro That was proven to be false.
@WallyWest I am pretty sure that guy did see a therapist and was diagnosed with it. I genuinely feel a bit sick watching the fatalities at their current state. PTSD isn't very hard to get, you still have the choice to play it, I'm just saying I can't really handle it. Like that show Invincible on Amazon Prime? I am still disturbed by that first episode where all those heroes get totally murked. If you showed the stuff we see to people 100 years ago, we would be totally desensitized to intense violence in comparison. Ehh but I still like fighting games & other games with gore, MK11 just goes way ott for me
