Tangledeep was an interesting roguelike that arrived on Switch back in 2019 after a successful Kickstarter campaign. It was a solid game with some nice 16-bit era visuals, though was pretty hardcore and challenging as well. Now the development team at Impact Gameworks is back with another project, albeit this time it's opted to produce a JRPG-inspired adventure.
Flowstone Saga promises a 'grand story', lots of characters to meet and an 'epic, adventurous soundtrack' among other things; it does look rather good and is targeting a 2022 release.
More intriguing is the fact that combat now incorporates a Tetris-style mechanic in which you clear lines to land attacks on enemies. There'll be special blocks to obtain along with puzzles to solve, but in a nice nod to accessibility there will be the option to use a 'Hold' mechanic, where line-clearing combat is more like a puzzle without the blocks gradually falling. You can have the more challenging faster-paced combat, but if you're not particularly good at Tetris it's a welcome option.
The game currently has a Kickstarter campaign that's off to a decent start, but the developers stress that these funds are not necessary for them to complete the game in the coming year. It's also confirmed for Nintendo Switch along with PC and Mac, with some early demos available for the latter on the campaign page. The funding is to add extra polish and quality to the game, such as live musicians for the soundtrack, more sound effects, animations and more.
It's worth taking a look at the Kickstarter page as it has a lot of detail on the game's various mechanics and systems; it looks rather intriguing.

So it's like the game Puyo Puyo Box for PS1. Cool.
I'm all for this sort of genre mash-up.
Had a great time with both PuzzleQuest and Undertale.
The inclusion of gem pieces on certain puzzle blocks reminds me of more of Bombliss than it does Tetris.
Looks promising at least.
A bit too far away to get too excited about yet but I love the look of the gameplay. A lot of potential to be a really fun game if the execution is good.
I still need to play Tangledeep. Bought it forever ago but just haven't got around to trying it.
@CactusMan
Reminds me that I -should- give PONG Quest a spin. I mean, a paddling.
Nice, odd how they manage to get a hold of Tetris without getting in trouble with the Russian mafia.
Bombliss rpg, I'm so in!!
Interesting, If they nail the combat this could be great. We'll have to see.
I fell down the rabbit hole with Tangledeep, big time. Although this game is substantially different, I like this developer & am looking forward to this game as well.
FYI, the main developer also is a musician under the banner “zircon” — his music has been in various other games,
@sfb Tangledeep is one of my favorite games I love everything about it. I’m really happy to see others talk about it and nintendolife cover it. It really deserves much more attention.
Anyone else worried the combat will feature You (the main character) and ONLY You? I love a lot about what I’m seeing with this one (including a year buffer to put up more Backlog beat down), but that would be an easy negative for me. In most turn based RPGs, I prefer: 3 ally minimum, interchangeable main character, augmentable action bar, 3rd person and combat animations. The rest (regenerate health/SP after battle, real-time button interaction, “poisoned until antidoted,” no EXP if unconscious, EXP for active party members only, etc.) can be negotiated. Will keep my eyes on this one...
Hmmmm... Seems really really interesting
Why does the in-game character art look nothing like the promo art? The character art looks rather disappointing...
Tetris combat looks novel to me, but this video just makes me want to play something like Megaman Battle Network instead... or a proper dungeon crawler like Shiren the Wanderer / Tangledeep
@Hck
yessss, I loved Puyo Box's quest mode. It was short, but I found it clever. I liked how different elements of the Puyo gameplay itself were bestowed by equipment - quick-rotate, All Clear bonus, Sousai (countering), and even the ability to rotate pieces in the first place. And also how the stats influenced the game such as speed and attack - opponents with high speed made your puyos drop way too fast, etc. it was certainly interesting. I also really liked being able to interact with an actual RPG world inhabited by the Puyo characters, even though I couldn't really tell what they were saying since my Japanese is pretty basic. ...
Ooh. I dug Tangledeep enough after getting it on Switch to repurchase it in DRM-free form on GOG, plus DLC for both platforms. I'll keep an eye on this one. Not sure I'm interested in a Tetris RPG, but Tangledeep was such a good "Mystery Dungeon" game that I'm still excited.
