Phil Spencer's shelf has become a bit of a talking point over the past week. First, we heard how Hideo Kojima might be doing something exclusively with Microsoft, and now, the latest focus is the Switch on the top run. We've already noted how Jeff Grubb said "pretty much everything" is a reference to something or other, and Shpeshal Ed - the co-founder of XboxEra, has now suggested the cat is out of the bag.
So, what's going on? Is the Nintendo Switch getting Xbox Game Pass? Is Master Chief from the Halo series coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate? While nobody seems to know just yet, the official Halo Instagram account has now gone and posted the following fan art (thanks to Nintendo Life reader Slowdive for the heads up). It's sure interesting timing.
As you can see, it features Mario as Master Chief, Donkey Kong as "Brutey Kong", Bowser as the Arbiter, Koopa as a Grunt and Peach as Cortana. It was created by pikathorchu and now, of course, has got Halo and Nintendo fans wondering what's up - with many questioning if Master Chief is coming to Smash...
It's worth noting the Halo social accounts, including the official blog site, share fan art all the time. This "super" artwork was originally posted by 343 employee "Snickerdoodle" on 4th April, at the end of a community spotlight post.
"I'm forever a Nintendo girl at heart so I don't think I can adequately express how much I absolutely love this piece by @pikathorchu. Everything about it is super!"
One thing all of this Nintendo and Xbox news apparently isn't about is "GoldenEye" (likely a reference to the recently leaked GoldenEye 007 XBLA remake), according to a follow-up tweet from Shpeshal Ed.
How would you feel about another Nintendo and Xbox collaboration happening in the future? Would you like to see Master Chief follow-on from Minecraft's Steve and Banjo-Kazooie in Smash Bros? Leave your thoughts down below.

I saw Bowser's Johnson. Nintendo needs to take this down.
Switch on the shelf, Now this? Guys its gonna ether be Xbox game pass of Master chief for smash.
Can't wait for Nintendo vs. Microsoft vs. Capcom
Reminds me of the old Gamepro art section. Seeing Mario & Luigi dressed as Scorpion & Sub-Zero was a fairly common sight.
I don't think Master Chief deserves to be in Smash unless MS gives some more love to Nintendo beyond Minecraft and a handful of indies.
Smash is one of Nintendo's top franchises. I feel MS should offer something in exchange for the honor.
How about MS share some of their games from former 3rd party studios they have bought? Like Rare and Bethesda? A deal where they allowed those studios to keep making games also for Nintendo would be a good win I think.
And we all know how many Nintendo fans want Rare Replay still.
Or a future NSO update adding N64 games... imagine seeing 007 Goldeneye with full online multi player support? Nah, that'll probably never happen. lol
Man, I would play the hell out of Smash on Xbox, but I'm guessing it's more a Game Pass on Switch thing, specifically, xcloud on Switch. Every good solution for streaming GP on mobile has basically tried to be a Switch, anyway.
@Heavyarms55 I just had this visual of Vault Boy, Ori, and Doom Guy in Smash. I need it even more now.
My uncle at Nintendo told me what this is all about.
But I can't tell you
@rowzdowr I think Doom Guy is extremely unlikely. Just because Doom is a series so heavily associated with intense graphic violence. Halo has intense violence too, but it's not nearly as graphic and it doesn't have the strong association with it that Doom does.
But I still think that if MS wants these characters in Smash, they should make a deal for those games to be on the system in some fashion.
I'm still really salty about no Persona 5 on Switch, but we did get scramble.
And at least the early Metal Gear games were on NES, so Snake makes at least a little sense.
Mario didn't die.
He switched video game universes.
Halo Anniversary Switch pleeeeeeeeeeeaaaassssseeeeeeee!
We already have Nintendo's own space marine in Samus. All Master Chief would be is a glorified clone with a far less interesting moveset.
Unless of course there's a secret deal between Nintendo and Microsoft which will see the Halo games on Switch. I can certainly see game pass being a thing (allowing the Switch to function as sort of a remote play device for the Xbox) but as for full blown ports? Colour me skeptical.
But if the above fanart is anything to go by, a family-friendly Halo + Mario crossover is one that I doubt anybody would have seen coming.
Master Chief in Smash. Halo Infinite F2P version on Switch.
>Master chief uses a plasma sword
>Sakurai loves swords
Master chief in smash confirmed
@Joyfultoad yeah totally! I loved buying those magazines
"It's worth noting the Halo social accounts, including the official blog site, share fan art all the time."
Oh...
There was that thing a couple months ago, where they said for the master chief collection that there is “going to be a new place and way to play.” so that’s seeming the most likely to me on switch, and that would shock the industry/everybody, one of the biggest three putting one of thier games on another one of the biggest three, everybody’s mind would be blown. At this point though, it’s probably that the entire switch on shelf is either game pass one switch, or master chief in smash, cause hey then all three big e3 reveals (assuming Steve was meant for e3 last year) were all Microsoft, and then he would also be the first FPS character, and it wouldn’t be the 5th swordfighter haha.
What if there's going to be a Nintendo Game Pass on xbox?
Large, high power Xbox games can't come to the Switch, but Nintendo games could run on Xbox. I mean, Nintendo could stream Xbox games, but streaming games is mostly a novelty at this point, and not really desirable.
@Heavyarms55 by that logic then Bayonetta and Castlevania have to leave Smash Bros. Bayonetta has ENDLESS pools of blood. Castlevania sometimes does as well..
While I’m not a big Halo fan, I’m genuinely intrigued by this.
Getting Master Chief collection on Switch would be pretty awesome.
Pareidolia is the tendency for incorrect perception of a stimulus as an object, pattern or meaning known to the observer.
Common examples are perceived images of animals, faces, or objects in cloud formations, or lunar pareidolia like the Man in the Moon or the Moon Rabbit. The concept of pareidolia may extend to include hidden messages in recorded music played in reverse or at higher- or lower-than-normal speeds, and hearing voices (mainly indistinct) or music, in random noise such as that produced by air conditioners or fans.
@Aerona Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now for Nintendo Switch
@WoomyNNYes
Nintendo is stingy to their subscribers with 20-30 year old games and rarely drop the pieces on their current games so all signs point to no.
@Heavyarms55 "heavily associated with graphic violence"
When will people realize this argument literally means jack sh*t now when the first third party character in Smash was Solid Snake and was later followed by people like Bayonetta who desecrates angels and strips naked to summon monsters, the Belmonts, whose series is filled with blood, gore and religious imagery that made whoever wrote the Bible crap their pants, and Joker who comes from a series that has a summonable monster who literally looks like a p*nis on a chariot and deals with topics like suicide, mental/physical abuse, the human subconscious, murder and rape.
DOOM Slayer can DEFINITELY be toned down. His violence is still extremely exaggerated and not at all hyper realistic or super detailed like someone like Snake
@Heavyarms55 "Smash is one of Nintendo's top franchises. Microsoft should give them something in exchange for the honor"
THEY LITERALLY WERE GIVEN THE HONOR OF NOT JUST ONE BUT TWO CHARACTERS AS DLC, WHICH IS A TRAIT SHARED WITH ONLY ONE OTHER THIRD PARTY COMPANY IN THE GAME
I completely believe that this is teasing the Master Cheif Collection on Switch. I've been predicting this for years now, Microsoft is bringing it to the Switch because of Phil Spencer desperately wants Goldeneye and Diddy Kong Racing on Rare Replay, but Nintendo won't let MS do it, so Phil is just playing every card he can to try and convince Nintendo to let MS have them. I wouldn't be at all surprised if there was a completed build of Rare Replay for the Switch and PC, but Phil is holding it back until MS gets permission for those two to be in it, and the MCC being ported is just his next attempt at getting them.
"With your powers combined, I am Captain Series Switch"
@Heavyarms55 I don't think Smash Bros deserves Master Cheif..
I predict gamepass will release on switch, but it will be the switch version of gamepass like how there's a PC version of xbox gamepass, or how EA pass is different on Xbox and Playstation. But for the hypothetical name. Will it just be called game pass? Or Nintendo gamepass with actual Nintendo games included like wii u titles? Will it be the exact GP version thats on xbox? Will that give Nintendo players access to all of Microsoft games like series x games?
@Heavyarms55 Bayonetta, lol.
I don’t really care who comes to Smash, but I would buy Master Chief Collection day 1 for switch. Rare Replay too.
Master Chief & Doom Slayer will be coming to Smash as a single package - i.e. Master Chief as a new character on the roster, and Doom Slayer as an alt of Master Chief.
I think it's either MCC for Switch, Game Pass for Switch or both if Microsoft decides to release more native Switch releases.
As cool as it would be to see Master Chief in Smash Ultimate, I think Steve deconfirms him as we already have a Microsoft character in Pass 2.
@Grumblevolcano Isn't that a bit like saying that Super Lucky's Tale won't be coming to Switch because we've already had Minecraft, or that Cuphead won't be coming to Switch because we've already had Super Lucky's Tale, or that Ori won't come to Switch because we've already had Cuphead?
And in one fell swoop, Peach’s abundance of media that follows the Internet’s 34th Law sees a rapid increase due to new “inspiration”.
I am interested to see where this goes (the Nintendo / Microsoft thing not the virtual p**ntang).
I don't know. If it happens, it happens but if it was a Smash hint, it's not very subtle and I would imagine Nintendo in particular would prefer it all to be under wraps as to who the last two characters could be. So far, they've done pretty well to not give it away.
Granted, Hero, Banjo and Steve were heavily speculated but their reveals still came as a surprise. It would be a shame to spoil such a secret with this post.
If anything, I see this as either 'look at this cool mash-up' or 'Hey, us and Nintendo are strong friends'. That said, I just see 'Hey, play Xbox games. Play Nintendo games. It's OK to like both. Sometimes you wanna shoot stuff online, other times you want to something playful. It's all good'
I think some Halo Remasters are coming to switch.
I would double dip just for the novelty.
MCC on Switch seems like the most likely to me.
I really don't want Master Master in Smash UNLESS it's part of a deal to allow Rare games on Switch. Master Chief has never featured on a Nintendo console so feels wrong for Smash.
"It's worth noting the Halo social accounts, including the official blog site, share fan art all the time."
It's just fanart as far as I'm concerned, but GamePass on Switch via the XCloud sure would be something!
Though it's most likely a coincidence, I still think Master Chief in Smash is the potential Xbox and Nintendo collab even though it's more likely game pass related.
I would be down to having a new Banjo-Kazooie game on the Switch. It would on make sense since it seems like most of its fanbase gravitates towards the Switch.
Remember when King Zell said something big was coming, like "Mario on PS" type of thing? Ever since people have speculated Halo on Switch. We shall see.
Chief for smash
Gamepass for Nintendo switch
Either one sounds like a great idea.
@gcunit Not really, there aren't limited game release slots meanwhile there are with Smash characters so to avoid potentially burning bridges with 3rd parties I think there'd be a limit of 1 character per non-Nintendo publisher per pass.
@Grumblevolcano Yeh, but right now, that thing they've got going on with Microsoft looks like a mighty fine bridge.
@Heavyarms55 ah so MGS Snake, Bayonetta, and Castlevania characters will have to leave then
Master Chief in smash????
Name one game or any relation of the Halo franchise on Nintendo.
Exactly.
Now compare THAT to DOOM
@Clyde_Radcliffe exactly right.
Unless Microsoft decides to port the MCC to NS, Master Chief won’t happen at all in smash
@martynstuff and when we wanted Sora but Disney refused, we got a surprise reveal of Sephiroth.
Sephiroth imo was the best reveal out of any fight pass 2 characters
@Silly_G I don't think you've ever played a halo game before if you think that master chief's moveset would be too similar to samus. Even if it was, how it could be far less interesting. Three of Samus' specials are on mii gunner they're so generic. It's mostly because samus was introduced on the N64 but you can't really get less interesting than that.
either master chief in smash or a halo game.( do not know which one as i have never had anything to do with halo. i guess master chief collection because that is the only one i know of.)
does this mean bowser says wort wort wort. Rosalina should be cortana then xD
@Heavyarms55 Lmao what.
Adult version of smash on Xbox.
Adds fatalities, bowser rips marios heads off and burns it with fire. Link jumps into the air and impales mario with his sword, luigi sucks mario with his poldergust snd you hear bones cracking inside so they fit it. Pickachu starts to eat human beings and then looks into the camera "pikaaa"
Ganondorf acts all scary, and one punch his opponents into twilight.
Oke enough of that lol.
@Grumblevolcano I don't think so because Nintendo had 2 characters in Fighter Pass 2: Min Min and Pyra/Mythra.
I don't see Master Chief coming to smash as Halo MCC isn't on switch. Maybe Doom Guy but not Master Chief unless Halo of some sort comes to switch.
Also why would the Halo MCC come to switch? Microsoft is essentially losing one of their biggest 1st party games to another platform. Ori and Cuphead aren't very risky as they are smaller games but HALO is completely different.
The likelihood of Halo coming to switch is as likely as Halo coming to PS5
Maybe Microsoft will just add in some more Bethesda games like Fallout 3 or Evil Within.
