Earlier today it was announced that Nintendo and Niantic would be partnering to release a Pikmin mobile app, designed to make walking "more fun" with real-world AR technology. According to the press release, this is the "first in a series of apps" based on Nintendo's beloved characters.
Niantic CEO, John Hanke, said it was a "natural next step" to team up with Nintendo, and couldn't wait to bring the company's franchises to life for mobile game players around the world. This has got us wondering if you could pick any Nintendo franchise for Niantic to transform into a real-world AR experience, what would it be? Vote in our poll and leave a comment down below.

None, they need to make Pokémon Go even better, first.
Mobile games in general don't interest me. Pokemon Go is fine, but I can't see myself getting invested in another game like it.
Hmm... Maybe Niantic could do something with Animal Crossing? None of these options seem like a great fit
Neither of them.
Put the efforts on Nintendo Switch, not to mobile games.
I honestly don't really care for Niantic games, and Pokemon GO itself wasn't really fun to me, so I'd rather them not touch more series honestly.
I vote for the Nintendo IP called ‘working netcode’.
@Anti-Matter I mean, Niantic is the developer, not Nintendo, so effort is being put on the Switch releases. Niantic is a mobile dev exclusively, and isn't even a part of Nintendo or gamefreak.
Eternal Darkness. Make me feel like I'm going crazy.
None. Get out of the mobile market.
Ice climbers, excite bike, balloon fight, f zero
I’m indifferent, I’m not really interested in Nintendo’s mobile games.
I’d rather see Link in Dragalia Lost.
I only use mobile to talk to friends and co-workers. I'd rather see more games on Switch, especially franchises that haven't even gotten a title yet on the Switch.
Am I the only one who wants to see what a Chibi-Robo AR game would look like?
Why is this a poll for what Niantic specifically should make? Shouldn't it just be a poll about what other Nintendo IPs should be on mobile? Does it really need to be Niantic that develops it? And why isn't Nintendogs on this poll?
I was going to instinctually go for Zelda, but honestly, Splatoon would be more fitting.
I'd rather see more games on Switch. I don't like mobile games too much.
@KayFiOS Rather have a Nintendogs switch game than one for Mobile that makes dogs 9.99 each or some crap, and a subscription service to get items and features that should've been in the app already.
None. At all. Period.
I want to say ZELDA or METROID as an AR experience due to the exploration aspect of those games, but if people got hurt wandering around catching Pokemon what the hell will happen when Ridley shows up from behind a bus stop!?!?
@KayFiOS As noted in the press release:
This Pikmin game will be "the first in a series of apps that the two companies will develop together". So it seems there are more Nintendo-themed apps on the way from Niantic. And that's why the poll is focused on Niantic.
We could have included every Nintendo IP under the sun in this poll, but I've narrowed it down to the top Nintendo franchises and a few others that are relevant to this current generation.
For series like Nintendogs (which we haven't seen since 2011), F-Zero, EarthBound etc - select the "other Nintendo IP" option.
@Liam_Doolan Ah sorry. TL;DR. Still, to quote the wise and honorable Paris Hilton, "We need to get Nintendo Dogs as an app on the App Store!" It makes so much sense, but then Nintendo always tries to do things that are out of left field.
Star Fox would be cool now that I think about it. Or F-Zero Live: Home Circuit, though that’s not done by Niantic.
Real life turf wars could be interesting so I picked Splatoon.
The Denpamen is kind of like Pokemon Go so that could work.
How the hell are a zelda or splatoon game by niantic supposed to work?
An animal crossing game where trees, fossils, ghosts and other stuff on a world map can be interacted with through mini games and resource gathering could work really well
Chibi-Robo AR
I’m not so sure about this....
I believe in Joy Mech Fight, Wave Race, Chibi Robo, and Startropics supremacy
@PBandSmelly
Not that I think Niantic would be a good choice, but we gotta get SOMEBODY to pick these babies back up
I honestly can't imagine any other Nintendo franchise to have a mobile game. I voted for Zelda, but I would think Splatoon would work much better, because the franchise as a whole is more relatable to real life.
Splatoon! Let's paint the world.
Gotcha games from Nintendo franchises?
Please don’t.
@Wilforce OEH. AR splatoon.
That is actually pretty nifty.
As long as you don’t have to pay per ball of paint...
I could see Splatoon working very similarly to Ingress, you have teams, you dominate their spots with your paint colour, and maybe to do that you have to aim a paint gun at targets, similarly to how you throw pokeballs in Go. Also the painted places could look nice in AR. Other than that I don't see any other working
None. Stay away. Far away and keep it that way.
Splatoon would make for a pretty good AR game - whichever team sprays the real world with the most ink of their color wins.
Whether anyone will actually bother to download, play, and purchase MTX within this game is a completely different matter, but I'd trust Niantic to do a better job at mobile gaming than Nintendo.
Considering that Pokémon GO won't even open on my phone anymore (it was crashing VERY frequently before, but now it crashes upon booting) I have no confidence in Niantic's competence. This is particularly annoying as I bought the GO Plus accessory and spent some coin on expanding my storage at the height of the game's popularity in 2016.
Do businesses no longer give a crap about customer goodwill? Screw off, Niantic.
I say animal crossing, just because it's a franchise I don't give a rats ass🤭🤭🤭
I want to see them do Eternal Darkness. It would be a dumpster fire but it would be in amusing dumpster fire.
None. I do not want more mobile gacha trash contaminating Nintendo brands.
None! Because this is going to be a big failure
I'd like to see them work on an actual Switch game. I may not have been a huge fan of it myself, but Pokemon Go was a huge success and I'm curious what they could with any of Nintendo's franchises. Could be a triple A title or just a modest eShop release, but I'd take that over any mobile game.
Bring the Bit Generations/Art Style series back. Those sorts of quick pick-up-and-play puzzlers are made for portable formats.
None. What's wrong with you people?
In the concept of Pokemon GO, I guess Animal Crossing would be the best fit. Map this over the real world, occupy an island, clean up the place, invite others in, go to a real lake and throw the fishing rod. The thing is that AC doesn't have a battle mode, so you can kick occupants out. Maybe you can become the new mayor in that town then.
none please, and definitely not with them.
Man I just want a Fossil Fighters GO where I can dig fossils in my backyard or in a mall and revive my own Vivosaur!
What about F-Zero? Or just skip the mobile platform go straight to Pikmin 4 or a new F-Zero?
Pokémon is not my jam, but Niantic has earned their reputation with these games. But since they've only ever done Pokémon, I don't know of what they're capable of and If I would trust them with another big Nintendo franchise.
A franchise that I would like to see revived is Wave Race. Not happening, I know...
"None, please" would be my option.
Nothing. Hate Nintendo phone games...
if they're gonna keep making AR games then reviving Wii Fit is such an obvious choice
None really i think, Pokemon Go is hardly even a game. Just another example of half arse work getting praise because its on mobile.
Nintendo has the IP’s and the money to utilise the hardware instead we get mobile game quality nonsense.
If we’re talking strictly Niantic-developed AR games, then I think Animal Crossing has the most potential. 400+ villagers, a tonne of bugs and fish to collect, furniture, clothes, etc. Pokémon & AC are both collection-heavy games, so it makes sense to me. Aside from that though, it’d be interesting to see what they could do with Super Mario or Zelda; both franchises have had so many different items and enemies in them over the years, I’m sure they could incorporate them into some exploration-based gameplay.
I'd rather Niantic keep their hands off other franchises after their poor handling of Pokémon.
When you organize a gathering of the fans, walk on stage and the first thing you hear from the live audience is an anguished "fix the game" screamed at the top of the lungs, you should know there's a long way to go before moving on to other franchises.
And yet, here we are.
Pilotwing would be fun. You'd see commercial airlines fly like crazy to get a few points.
I don’t think any of the titles in the list fit AR well.
I think Mario Golf or Nintendogs would be more interesting.
F-Zero - driving in Montréal already feels like the game anyway.
"Traffic lights? What traffic lights?"
Photo Dojo sequel perhaps.
I'd like to see what they do with Pikmin first. So far they've made a geocaching game which had a cult following of people that were largely doing it anyway. Then they skinned that same game with Pokémon and it was amazing and millions of people got on board and they've slowly built on that. Then they reskinned it again for Harry Potter and as far as I know it flopped?
I really hope Pikmin is not the same game again. Partly because there's what, 7 type of Pikmin? Even with all the Pikmin foes you'd probably barely scrape much more than the original 151 Pokémon to collect. Can they make something else? Is it just going to be AR gimmicks? I don't want this to flop and then Nintendo to do their "well we made a couple of games for that IP that weren't what people wanted and they flopped so we assume people just don't want that IP at all" and kill Pikmin like poor Chibi Robo and others.
Let's see what they can do outside the PoGo formula and then have a think about what fun things they could maybe do based on that.
What if there was a Kid Icarus Uprising style AR game where you shoot enemies that appear on screen
None. As much as Pokémon Go was a creative idea, and a Pikmin game definitely sounds cute, freemium games are the second coming of satan.
They pull you in, make you play multiple times the amount you should be playing, with extreme amounts of recycled content, and you must pay tons of money if you don't want to waste away your life playing the game while keeping up with other people. Sure, some games do this better, and some do it worse, but overall it's a very, very toxic trend in my opinion.
I voted for DKC. But mostly because I just want to see the gang again. Even if it is just in a mobile game.
@SeantheDon29 Why? No one is hurt by them and some people enjoy them. It doesn't take away from any potential Switch game either, because they are an independent team working on their own, and they wouldn't work on Switch games anyway.
All these people who just have that nonsensical, absolute, childish "boycott" nature on mobile games...
You don't have to play them. They don't hurt you in any way. The people developing them have no and wouldn't otherwise have any influence on the development of Switch games anyway.
There are people who enjoy them and always being like "I DON'T LIKE THEM SO THEY SHOULDN'T EXIST" is really just childish. You can hate and criticize them for things like ridiculous microtransactions. That is totally reasonable. But wishing them to cease existing out of selfish reasons, bringing down every comment section where someone might enjoy them, that's just annoying as heck.
@Krisi Well, Genshin Impact is that kind of game and it gave me many hours of free fun that didn't feel like I wasted my time away. Do I like mtx? Partially yes. Do I like gacha? Yes. Do I loke those two combined into gambling? No. Was there content I would've loved to enjoy but couldn't because they were locked behind such gambling? Yes.
Still, I had lots of enjoyment without paying anything.
Mario Kart Tour, Fire Emblem Heroes, Dragalia Lost, they all do that gambling thing where I absolutely understand and support criticizing it. But all of these games brought me lots of great times without spending a penny. Don't blame mobile games, blame abusement of gambling. Mario Kart Tour does have some really fun gameplay (I am not saying more fun than console releases, but fun). But 90% of players don't even give it a chance, cuz they act like some admittedly ridiculous micro transactions disable them to have fun with what you are given for free.
@AlexSora89 Wasn't that specific case just about some network issues that weren't related to the game itself? (which is bad enough, but wouldn't give any credit to your point made)
AR-MS. (get it? lol)
@HotGoomba
Oh my. I hadn't even considered that, but I do think that would be glorious! I've been dying for another proper Chibi-Robo game, but I think that would suffice at least temporarily.
WAVE RACE ^______^;
(I know it will never happen, unfortunately...)
I want Pikmin GO!
AR smash, or a version of it could be cool. it would have to be simplified control wise, but to see the characters fighting in your world would be cool
Face Raiders that uploads to your social media accounts, so it posts to Tiktok, FBlive, Instagram etc. No chance of damaging other Nintendo IP. You can have Nintendo character themes/costumes and projectiles. It would go down a treat with kids and spread awareness of various Nintendo IP.
@NDragon1412 I've played many freemium games, including Mario Kart Tour. I liked it, and didn't spend a penny, but then I realized that they just repeat courses over and over again, and if you want the rewards every week, you need to grind over and over for points and coins and whatnot. Yes, it's hours of gameplay for free, but is it truly enjoyable? I've come to realize that it was not much more than wasted time, as I wasn't really enjoying it, and I could've done so much more with that time - such as play a game that constantly gives me new experiences, or learn a new language.
As for Fire Emblem Heroes - it was fun, but I felt that the battles themselves weren't even the focus later on anymore. If I recall, there was even an option for auto-battling. If you take away the only gameplay from the game, then it just becomes a fancy way to watch numbers go up, and it's not truly a good or even rewarding experience, it just gives the illusion of one.
For people who say their favorite thing in gaming ever is grinding levels in RPGs, these games are great. For everyone else, believe me, you could spend your time much better.
@Krisi I think the problem lies with how one sees those games. You seem to expect them to be fun when played just like console games. But they AREN'T alternatives to console games, and I really don't think they are meant to be.
As a hardcore gaming experience the f2p model surely sucks. And if you play it like that, multiple hours on end, forcing yourself through grinding, that can hardly be enjoyable, I agree. But if you take it for what it is - a MOBILE game meant to be brought up every now and then - at least I find it as a very pleasing and enjoyable experience I wouldn't wanna miss. Then you will get a "constantly new experience", since those tracks that can otherwise become stale quickly rotate every week, the f2p gacha gives you new characters to experience every now and then, and with those characters also come completely new items to shake up gameplay.
Same thing for FE Heroes and all the others. I enjoy them, since I do not see them as a competitor for console games, but rather as a addition. I don't play FEH when I would otherwise play FETH. I don't play MKT when I'd otherwise play MK8D. I play them when I am lazy sitting on my couch and feel like sinking a few minutes into a leightweight MK/FE experience before going on with my day. And for that I love them. This way of playing them is supported by the fact that all of those games reward you, not for playing hours on end, but with daily rewards for stepping in every now and then. Considering things like that, I think it's pretty obvious how they're meant to be played. And playing them that way might drastically change your perspective
CHIBI ROBO
Have the little guy clean up virtual messes in the real world via AR.
@NDragon1412 Well then the problem might partially be with me, but when the game constantly keeps telling me that "here's this content that might not return ever or at least not for a long time when it will rotate out of the meta anyway" I don't want to miss it. And I'm pretty sure they know that many people are like that. The comment about stuff rotating out of the meta only applies to certain games obviously, Pokémon Shuffle is one that immediately comes to mind.
Mario Kart did have new tracks every tour at first, but it got to a point where we got like a single new stage every few tours, the rest was just recycled content. Sure, sometimes you had to go backwards, or there was more stuff on the road, but it didn't change the fact that you were playing the same track for literally the hundredth time disguised as something new. The new characters were kind of exciting at first as well, but then they started adding pretty much only different costumes to Mario, Peach, and the others, with most of them having special items that existed before, and all of them being rare or very rare drops, meaning you wouldn't be able to get them if you weren't grinding. Because if you took your time collecting enough resources to even get a chance at pulling a new character, then the set would rotate and the new pool might have characters you don't want, or just have already.
Daily rewards are pretty much just something to keep you coming back every day. They are not true rewards in a sense that you truly get something new to do every time, just usually a little of something you have to collect tons of to have any effect at all. They are pretty much just there to trick you to come back every day, or at least more times than you would want to.
As I said, I've played a fair amount of freemium games, and letting them go was pretty hard sometimes, and I kind of missed them after that, but later on, I absolutely realized how much time I saved by not playing them. Sure, if you truly have fun with them, that's awesome, but for me, when I really thought about it, I was mostly playing for the almost non-existent rewards, and they started to feel more and more like chores. And even if you only play 10-15 minutes a day with each, it does add up.
Again, if you truly enjoy yourself while playing these, then I'm really happy for you, but I think that for most people, they really have to think about why they play these games, because for most, they are truly horrible in the long run. I don't think I'll play any freemium games ever again, and I've never spent a penny on any of them. Some people can't resist doing so, and it can be really dangerous, as they sometimes pay incredible sums to get stuff, and usually to get a lesser experience than if they just bought a regular game.
None, i'm a avid pokemon go player, I play around 1-2 hours a day and the game is far far far from the quality you would expect from a Nintendo IP - if they cared about pokemon GO first instead of trying to make as much money possible then maybe i'd want to see them tackle another franchise.
A Super Smash Bros. AR game could be pretty great! Plus you've got all the major franchises covered right there.
Of course, I don't really know how it would work. Probably similar to Pokemon GO, with finding / collecting Smash fighters (or Spirits?) and making them FIGHT
I don't care. I don't play mobile games. My phone is one of my tools for work.
Hot take: mobile games suck.
None of them. I think Nintendo is more than well-positioned or even over-extended with their current mobile offering. While IPs with universal appeal like Mario and Pokémon take well to entry-level mobile applications that connect non-console users with those IPs and invite them to go deeper, I don't think IPs like Zelda stand to gain anything from having mobile applications, and they would actually lose some value in the process. Zelda is a series that would enjoy no benefits from a mobile-and-MTX treatment beyond a basic Zelda NES style application or a bug collecting with Agitha in the real world style minigame. The fun of Zelda at its core comes from exploration and discovery, which will always be best suited to a console.
Please don't do Splatoon. Please don't entice me to play mobile games.
Fire Emblem may be good. Have "random" battles as you walk.
It would be cool if they ported Earthbound or Mother 1 to phones... just make it like $5 each or something idk
AR seems so much more intriguing and practical than VR to me atm. Interested to see the tech and applications game devs & others continue to come up with.
That being said, in this poll I say F-Zero. Could be like the new version of Hot Wheels, but a cooler customizable digital AR version.
I don’t think most of these would be good.... Animal Crossing is the only one I think they could make amazing since the original game is already a game about walking
Arms in AR. Imagine using your phone to battle spring man or other people. And if they don't call it ARms, I will be mad.
