You may recall that last month, accessory maker Hori revealed it will be launching a Monster Hunter Rise edition of their popular Split Pad Pro controller. Previously, it was only confirmed for Japan, but now, a new Amazon listing tells us it's launching in North America on April 26th.
Costing $59.99, the Split Pad Pro is only useable in handheld mode, but offers a good alternative for players that find Nintendo's standard Joy-Con a little too small. Also included are a pair of additional buttons on the rear of the controllers (which can be assigned to any other buttons you'd prefer) and a turbo function.
Here's the official product description:
Hunters can gear up to track down and defeat monsters with the special edition Nintendo Switch Split Pad Pro (Monster Hunter). Re-experience the full-size controller experience in handheld mode with full-size analog sticks, a precision d-pad, and large shoulder buttons. Designed for comfort and accuracy, even during marathon hunting sessions.
Advanced features include assignable rear triggers, turbo functionally, and more for complex attacks and commands. Perfect for high-pace action RPG titles like Monster Hunter Rise and many other genres. Enhance your gaming experience with the Split Pad Pro! Officially Licensed by Nintendo and Capcom.
(Not a wireless controller – only for handheld mode. Does not include motion controls, HD Rumble, NFC, or IR Camera. Note: if having trouble with the Switch recognizing Split Pad Pro, please ensure that all Joy-Con are off and not connected via Bluetooth.)
Rise's Split Pad Pro doesn't appear to be available in Europe just yet, though you can still find previous options – including Black, Red, and Pikachu variants.
We're now four days away from Monster Hunter Rise launching, so if you're still after a copy (and the Amiibo), you can check out our pre-order guide.

No motion (or is that handled by the Switch tablet?), no hd rumble, no amiibo, no ir, no wireless operation. Just get some joy con grips for 1/5th the price.
@okeribok Agreed barely anything pro about this controller!
@okeribok true, but also no drift and much better sticks. I also like the little flappy buttons on the back that you can map to any button you like, handy for shoulder button alternatives. Still quite pricey for this version, though, I'm sure previous models were cheaper.
I got a split pad pro last week and while you do miss the motion controls and rumble for some games if you just want to play Binding Of Isaac or something for hours without your hands going numb, it's really nice. Nice thumbsticks, feels really good in your hands. If you know going in that you're just going to be using it them in handheld for longer gaming sessions then they're pretty good.
Also the version I got was like 40 bucks, this is just more expensive because of the paint job.
Hopefully this comes to Europe as they're so much nicer to use than the joy cons, sure there are a handful of games that require motion controls but most I own either don't have them or are better without them
@okeribok how many games even use IR? the sticks and buttons are far better on these and I can live without rumble. Joy Cons will be better in a handful of games but these are better in most for me
A $20 upcharge for some fancy MHR decal?
Alright...I'll buy.
@okeribok very ill informed comment, these things are great if you actually like to hold the console in handheld mode!
It's also up on Amazon UK but no pricing yet.

@quinnyboy58 I totally agree, i never looked back from the first day i got the Xmachina split pad pro. I absolutely love them, nice fitting in my hands.
They are much better than the original switch grips imo.
These might be missing functions compared to original joycons but they are so comfortable and the analog sticks are so much better than the og joycons if you play handheld most of the time then these are superb
@quinnyboy58 Problem is, you can only be truely informed after you buy a thing like this. I agree that better sticks would be nice and that many other features are not required for enjoyment. But overall this seems like a bad purchase at this price. (Edited because it does still fit in the dock)
I'd just like a pair of joycons that don't drift, and for a reasonable price.
@okeribok it does fit in the dock with these attached also I found a case on Amazon that holds the switch with the spilt pad attached
@okeribok it still fits in the dock, I love mine, but I've got them on sale, for the full price they should have e at least the motion controls. As they are they feel kinda incomplete. On the drift issue, it's too early for me to say, but you can see people on Reddit already complaining about it on older models, which makes sense, right now it's expected on all controllers. iFixit explained the reason for the drift and why it should affect all controllers.
Btw a good alternative to these is the BINBOK Switch Pro Controller, they are similar to these but also work wireless, have motion control and rumble capabilities. But it has been unavailable for a while now and disappears as soon as there is some stock.
I'm so pissed, I just got the pac man ones yesterday why couldn't they have announced this a day earlier why why uuuggghhhh
@Malchaios All controllers drift with a certain amount of use. Joycon's problem is they drift significantly earlier than normal wear on other sticks. Not sure about the SPP though.
I want these but I play Overwatch in handheld mode with the motion feature. So sadly these aren't a great option for me.
@NEStalgia That may be true but joycons are the only controller i've experienced drift on. and i've been gaming since the NES.
nes controllers had zero drift btw.
I bought the standard version of these specifically to play Rocket League in handheld mode, and while it was definitely easier, I found out that game itself has terrible input lag on switch so no controller will make it playable.
These are pretty much the only controllers I use for handheld mode for any game where gyro aiming isn't mandatory (which is 98% of the stuff I play, c'mon). The lack of rumble is unfortunate, but I do really like the remappable buttons on the back of the controllers as well. And the turbo functionality is insanely useful for any game with repetitive button clicking.
The sticks, buttons, and D-Pad are all very, very nice. They blow away joycons, frankly.
@beuiz Playing Binding of Isaac for hours is what I do with this controller
The lack of rumble and motion support is why I never bought these.
I can’t tell If I like these or the pac man ones better. I like the idea a lot though. Only complaint I have is that they do t work with flip grip
