As promised, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night has been treated to two free additions today, and to give us a better look at the new content, 505 Games has shared a brand new trailer for the 8-bit Classic Mode.
This latest DLC is part of a steady stream of content planned for the game throughout 2021; alongside the Classic Mode is 'Kingdom Crossover', a new map based on 2D side-scrolling strategy game, Kingdom Two Crowns.
Here's a quick overview of each new addition:
- Classic Mode: Announced during Bloodstained’s Kickstarter campaign, Classic Mode sends Miriam into an 8-bit aesthetic world armed only with a Sword-whip. Miriam must once again enter the demonic castle to confront Gebel and survive five harrowing stages and five sub-bosses that stand in her way. Upon finishing Classic Mode, players are graded on time, score and number of deaths across three difficulty modes – be sure to efficiently use Miriam’s special moves including slide, backstep and backflip. Users can activate Classic Mode from the EXTRA MODES option on the main menu screen.
- Kingdom Crossover
- Publishers Raw Fury and 505 Games partnered last year by transporting Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night’s beloved characters – Miriam, Zangetsu, Gebel and Alfred – to Kingdom: Two Crowns. Both publishers are teaming up again, but this time, bringing the world of Kingdom: Two Crowns into Bloodstained. The aptly named Kingdom Crossover content includes a new area that captures the beautiful, modern pixel art aesthetic of Kingdom. Players will encounter a new boss, the Archer Familiar Shard and can find a new piece of equipment: the Crown Head Gear, which reduces damage at the cost of gold.
Koji Igarashi, founder of developer Artplay, says, "We remain dedicated to giving our fans new ways to experience Bloodstained, and our collaboration with Raw Fury spanning the last two years has opened both of our worlds. In addition to the Kingdom: Two Crowns crossover, we’re also now opening Classic Mode, a new gameplay experience that will deliver a rush of nostalgia that many of our fans crave."

Any chance you can jump into classic mode? I beat the game a while back and don't want to have to beat the boss again to unlock it.
So it's basically a new game if it doesn't use the map. Curse of the moon 2 is only 8 stages so 5 is pretty good
For all the crap that we all put on these guys for the rocky launch on Switch, you gotta hand it to them for the continued support. Plus, it seems to run much better these days! Worth mentioning that whips and chains are a ninja-clan favorite.
CLASSIC NINJA APPROVED
@BloodNinja Agreed, I am very happy with how they continued to update the quality of the game and add all the additional content.
@BloodNinja Yeah it's great to see Iga not follow in his scam artist buddy Inafune's steps.
Very cool to see their commitment to the game. I'm still waiting for the next performance improvement patch... They said they were still working on one. Maybe Switch Pro will allow for it. Really excited to play the version as they intended so will keep waiting!
Does anyone happen to know how much storage all of the updates for this game take on an SD card? I have been thinking about picking up a physical copy for this game but I am unsure how much space I’ll need to make it play decently.
So.. classic mode does not use 8-32bit pixel graphics? Missed opportunity
@Okapi Just checked for you. The whole game comes in at 6.6GB with the update portion being 1.8GB.
There's just something about this that looks far more right now to me.
@tomwinsagain Another performance patch would be awesome! Where did you hear or read they were working on this?
@XenoShaun Inafune upset the ninja clan warriors, so they sent him very menacing glares from the shadows.
MIGHTY NO. WHAT?! NINJA NOT APPROVED
@Guitario It would be a bit of a nightmare to get all that running efficiently in the RotN engine. There’s a reason for the strange aesthetic in the 8-bit areas.
My Aqua Stream shard stopped working so I can no longer swim. Has this happened to anyone else?
I am stuck now because of this and I am afraid I am going to have to start over.
How is this game holding up now? I mean when I initially got it at launch there were major frame drops and it struggled in complex environments. Is it any better after all this time now? I'd really like to go back to it.
I beat this game 3 times on the Switch already, but its been a while, so, ready to go back for more with this newest update.
Lol Gremory using Death patterns looks awesome! Also the Werewolf uses the same attack as in Portrait of Ruin boss fight.
It might be interesting to play this mode.
@Guitario To be fair they have two entirely separate games for the retro graphics.
@Orpheus79V ya I guess, I just thought they would have used some sort of screen filtering or something similar to dead cells
@DaRKaMMo When they implemented the 1.04 update they said that content-wise all versions are the same now and that they have more performance optimisations planned for Switch: https://www.destructoid.com/stories/bloodstained-runs-better-on-switch-with-update-1-04-577990.phtml
Classic mode is soooooo cool. All the castlevania nostalgia! So much fun. Almost finished my second playthrough of the main game. Still one of my favorites!
Did anyone else see the moon on the cover picture for this article and think it was a Smash Bros announcement? That moon is sus...
All this dlc but is the base game comparable to other platforms yet? Have they fixed the slowdown? Have they fixed the ugly, muddy, low resolution visuals?
This game was good and I personally thought the complaints at launch were overstated. I played and beat the game during the launch window and I think it's the best metroidvania on switch. That being said, I commend them for continued support but my backlog is too large to go back for this mode. Looking forward to their next project.
@Guitario My exact thoughts, especially as they went with a pixel logo. Kinda lazy, but still nice it exists.
@Guitario That costs $10 on the eshop lol
Wow this looks excellent! Picked this game up not long after launch, and had some good fun with it. For some reason (backlog?) I stopped playing for a while. Looks like its time to pick it back up, finish the main mode and dive into this.
