Last weekend, the anime streaming service Funimation teased a Nintendo Switch app and now it's been officially confirmed.
The very first (and only) anime streaming app on the hybrid system will arrive in the United States and Canada on 15th December. In addition to this, it's "coming soon" to the United Kingdom, Ireland, Mexico and various other countries.
In celebration of this announcement, Funimation has given the app a "refreshing rework". If you were already making use of it on other platforms, you'll notice it now has a brand-new look and feel, all-new curations, a "My Anime" page, a launch schedule - so you can keep up to date with all the latest eps, and much more.
The release of the Funimation app on the Nintendo Switch will be followed by a rollout on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
This service, as previously noted, allows you to binge up to "13,000 hours" of popular series. There are shows like My Hero Academia, Fairy Tail, Attack on Titan and classics like Initial D. Will you be adding the Funimation app to your Switch HOME Menu? Let us know in the comments.

I hope the app is vastly better than the crappy one the PS has.
This is useless, because Funimation is not accessible since the begging and even now in my country.
Initial D on Nintendo Switch. 🤭

People keep complaining how terrible the app on the PS4 is....when their streaming service in general is terrible. lol
I don’t think I'd want to use my Switch for watching stuff on, especially not now.
I really think i might need a new Switch soon but I'm holding out, this one i have is about ready to keel over and die on me i think, keeps making a noise like a tractor when i play games on handheld and the batteries go below 50%. Which incidentally, takes about an hour even on Indie games.
I think my battery is a bit knackered, I'm desperately holding out for a Super Switch 😩.
Is there a fee for subscription?
Free? NSO required? Subscription?
@TheSmashTheorist There is no mention of it requiring an NSO subscription. As far as I know, it's a standalone app that you'll download for free from the Switch eShop (much like YouTube and other apps).
As for the costs, it's got a free and paid model. I just booted up an episode of Ace Attorney (the anime) on the Funimation website and watched a bit of it, it had ads, but I didn't even have to log in. With the app, you might have to register an account before you can use it.
Personally, I use the Crunchyroll app on all my devices - not sure what will happen to that though now that it has been bought by Funimation (Sony).

Update: As @Bendy mentioned, it seems you need an account and a subscription to use the Switch version of the app.
l like the "oh hello" xD
I will be getting it for sure. I've been using the website via my computer and... well if you can find the episode you want, it's fine. But the website is so clunky and slow. It really feels very very outdated.
On the other hand, the video quality is fine. So there's that.
I hope Crunchyroll comes to Switch too. Although CR's webside is vastly better than Funimation's and since I have my PC and Switch at the same TV I don't know if I'd watch via Switch.
I did put hundreds of hours into YouTube on Switch before I got my new PC which boots WAY faster than my old one with it's 8-10 minute start up...
This will be the closest we'll ever get to Netflix on Switch.
or...
@Razer that sounds awful dude lol. My buddy has my OG switch and it’s still bangin like a drum and I put two 300 hour sessions into BOTW on it.
look I don't care how crappy people are calling this but if it's a streaming service on SWITCH not to mention for my second favorite thing ever which is Anime(the first being my SWITCH) and if it will have offline streaming(let's hope it does bc if not no way am I getting it) and is less than 10$ a month then Funimation can have all my money
I'll try it out of curiosity, then probably delete it when I find out there are no dub options. After that, I'll likely argue with the lot of you over the point of having dubs.
I know switch originally wanted to focus on “games” but does anyone know why they didn’t release any other streaming apps other than Hulu, YouTube and now Funimation of all things?
@JGruns
My best guess is that there's simply no reason for companies to spend of a bit of money to optimize their streaming apps for the Switch, even as cheap or as easy as it is. I can definitely see it being very easy for Netflix and Disney+ to be optimized for the Switch, not to mention Hulu being released outside of the US.
Most people nowadays would have smart TVs, mobile devices, computers, and even other consoles that output higher resolutions, which basically makes watching things on the Switch more of a novelty than an actual useful feature, especially considering the Switch isn't a mobile device, not supporting SIM cards for data plans.
I'm interested, but not sure I want to pay for it, if it's a paid subscription thing.
Cool.
When's Amazon coming?
funmation sucks I use crunchyroll If that gets a app then hell yes, but not funmation.
@DrDaisy They have dubs thats what funmation is known for but trust me when I say there dubs suck with lots of censorship.
@Joeynator3000 LOL funmation is the first thing I used before crunchyroll and you know what happend? I HATED IT This comment is so true.
Will it be available in Scandinavia?
@Razer sounds like PPSSMS (piss poor switch saftey managment skills)
The article's description of the app as the "very first (and only)" one of its kind is a bit redundant when talking about something that's yet to happen, lol. Aside from that, this is nice news for the Switch.
Side note, y'all should, in fact, not trust people like Snatcher throwing out blanket claims against Funimation that "there dubs suck."
I like their dubs.
@Snakesglowcaps I've had it for 3 years but the issue is, i have thousands of hours on various video games, just an example below.
300 hours for Witcher 3
285 hours for Botw
260 hours on Skyrim
190 hours on NBA 2k20 (Hush, i don't want to hear it! I love me some basketball)
175 hours on Dark Souls
150 hours on Dragons Dogma
130 hours on Dragon Quest 11
125 hours on Smash
120 hours on Mario Kart
115 on Splatoon 2
This doesn't include all the indie games I've played like Hollow Knight and Dead Cells are both 80 hours each. I was on furlough for 6 months until September, so a lot of time for games lol.
What with not being able to go out and all, 2020 really has been the year for gaming, Witcher 3, Skyrim, NBA 2k20, Dragons quest and dogma all from this year.
So yeah i would say it's a lot of use that has killed it.
@JGruns it's not Nintendo's decision.
@NathanTheAsian Netflix said that the Switch app was ready for the Switch.
It just needed Nintendo's approval.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/gamerant.com/nintendo-switch-netflix-app/amp/
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2017/09/rumour_netflix_app_ready_for_switch_all_it_needs_is_nintendos_go-ahead
In this particular instance, Netflix went out of their way to optimise their app for the Switch before getting approved and never got the final approval. Although it is meant to be a rumor, throughout 2018 it was constantly mentioned, i think the rumors came from Netflix themselves, or people who worked there.
@kobashi100 yes it is. Check the above article. One from Nintendo Life no less.
Nintendo blocked it.
@TimboSlice yes, they have a monthly or yearly charge for their premium service. There may be a free tier, but I’m not sure. I’ve had mine since 2012 or so when it debuted.
@Razer
I'm quite aware, but I wasn't sure if it was on Netflix or Nintendo for the app to not be on the Switch yet.
@NathanTheAsian i think this one is on Nintendo because Netflix would probably put their app on a fridge if they could.
I tend to use Crunchyroll more
@Razer i also love basketball. I would get 2k21 but the file size is waaaaaaaay too big. And i have 210 hours on 2k20
@TheSmashTheorist well i downloaded 2k20 for £4 on a crazy cheap sale, it's one of the only big AAA games i own digitally. Because they are yearly games, I've never been too bothered about owning them physically.
how big is the file size for 21? I may delete my 2k20 and get 21 when it's on one of those super cheap sales if it's within the same size as the 20.
20 was 44 gigs i think, which like you said, is kinda crazy. But you should know, when that urge to play some ball comes along, can't simply ignore it 😆.
@Razer its like 50 GB or something. When i got 20 last christmas i had to buy a micro sd card
I like how no one is actually commenting about the fact we have a comic book/ (I think) manga app on switch; but it needs a subscription so frig.
@TheSmashTheorist yeah i may delete 20 and get 21, just 6 gigs extra, I'll bin 21 when im done with that too so it's no big deal really, when its on a super cheap sale I'll dip in, im guessing early next year it'll go on one.
@Razer i don't think it's worth spending $60 usd for a game thats just like 20 exept more sweat
@SilentS The app is bad on everything. PS4, PS5, Smart TVS, Android. Its been broken for 2 years with the same issues and they just never fix it
I'm Still Waiting For Prime Video
If it allowed for downloading content to watch offline, it'd be A LOT more attractive...if I'm sitting at home, connected to the TV, i'll use my Chromecast with Google TV over this always
@TheSmashTheorist yeah like i said, I'll wait for it to go on sale. Definitely not worth £50.
@Snatcher didn't funimation just buy Crunchyroll? Or am I reading things wrong
@Razer what time will funimation go on the eshop
ATTENTION ALL NINTENDO SWITCH AND ANIME LOVERS I just found out that this has offline streaming so to all you confused SWITCH and Anime lovers please you need to get this because this right here is a must buy and you can spend 99$ + tax to get a whole year right now
@Joeynator3000 Netflix works well enough. Also I got a free trial for Spotify and the connection app works great. Youtube could be better but works well
Not sure where you're coming from lol
@TheSmashTheorist not sure, i haven't looked because I'm not going to download it, I'm sure you'll need a subscription and i don't have one, besides all that.
I have other ways to access animation 😁
@Liam_Doolan On switch you need an account and subscription, I hope it changes to be like the website though.
If others want to use this app than that’s their choice but for me No thanks. I’ll pass. They already lost their value for me as a customer since their dubs are now filled with political and SJW BS in it. Not to mention they’re dubbed voice actors are terrible human beings from what I’ve seen and heard On twitter like Chris Sabat using Autism as a insult and Jamie Marchi joking that their should be more victims in school shootings etc and not to mention they already betrayed one of their fellow friends and former co employees Vic Mignogna(I’ve done a lot of research and havnt seen a shred of proof that says he’s guilty) and that’s just the start of the list 😐 I’ll just stick with pirating since it’s free
People here are complaining about the PS4 app being terrible but the website is equally awful. Fullscreen doesn't even work unless you have multiple monitors, because it always detects your mouse being on the screen and never gets rid of the UI.
It's a very, very low bar but if this lets me watch the new Higurashi in fullscreen I guess it's worth it.
@earthinheritor Fair enough. I only have the PS4 app for reference to go off of.
