The Nintendo Switch is obviously a great device for gaming but admittedly falls short in terms of video and streaming apps.
Sure, we've got YouTube, Hulu and a few others, but where are the rest? Well, it looks like the next one that might be on its way to the hybrid system is Funimation's app.
This service, if you didn't already know, is designed for anime fans - allowing you to binge up to "13,000 hours" of popular series. There are shows like My Hero Academia, Fairy Tail, Attack on Titan and classics like Initial D.
The Funimation app is already available on the Xbox and PlayStation and has been mentioned for the Switch in the past. Is this an app you would add to your HOME Menu if it did show up on the Switch? Comment down below.

Finally!!!! This is good news.
*Only available to residents of the United States.
I still have no interest in download any media apps to my Switch. I use the system for gaming exclusively and already have plenty of other ways to watch stuff. Can't play my Switch while watching if I'm watching on my Switch.
I think Danganronpa is on here... 😁
@BenAV
But surely you would have no issue with the apps being available for others who want to enjoy them?
I have a VRV account and I would prefer that on the Switch.
@TheFullAndy No. If I had an issue with it I would have said so.
na- Na- NANI!?
@BenAV
Good
Cool, but I'm good with just buying the shows I watch. I prefer to own my content.
Whatever. Their video streaming is crap. Probably be no different or worse on Switch.
This is interestingly timed. Very recently, it was revealed that Funimation (itself owned by Sony) has acquired Crunchyroll. Hopefully both services make their way to Switch, it is super awesome being able to watch YouTube and Hulu on the Switch and there should be more!
Nice! After rounds of having, I can catch up on Fruits Basket and Attack on Titan!
I honestly dont know why other media apps arent on the switch yet? Hopefully more will come cause id like to have everything in one place
Hopefully it's not as bad as the app is on other consoles. The Apple TV version is the only version of their app that is actually good.
That looks like a confirmation. They just picked up crunchyroll from HBO Max too. Hmmm..if pricing is right, I'm in.
If true, this is pretty cool news, for anyone that would want it on the Switch. I probably won't download the app, as I have it on other devices, that I would prefer to watch my anime on instead, but still, cool news if true.
A Sony app on Switch? Would be interesting.
Funimation only available for US residents.....ok, ill just stick with Netflix then, the anime catalog on Netflix in my country is miles better than the US one anyways
Now I can go from not watching funimation to not watching funimation but it's on the switch this time
I like Netflix's and hulus anime selection anyway
I use crunchyroll so this is not for me but for people who like and use it good for you.
@BenAV I agree with this.
Can't wait until they inevitably dump their current app now that they own Crunchyroll. Hopefully their combined resources will lead to a halfway decent player since they certainly will have the library down.
About time. It's really bizarre how major streaming service apps have just been completely absent on the Switch for the most part.
Took them long enough, after we've been asking for 4 years. Now it's too late, I stopped using their streaming because it's crap and I can't take it anymore. lol
that was a pretty purple joy con
@Torakaka Considering the deal to sell Crunchyroll (which includes VRV) to Funimation just went through, and since this app is happening, it isn't out of the realm of possibility to see VRV come to Switch. However with this huge deal I suspect a price increase will be coming to VRV.
Finally! The Switch has always seemed like it would be the perfect device to stream on, but I just never really stuck with Hulu, so maybe this will be better. I'd love to be able to finally binge DBZ on my Switch.
@javiboy2 As long as I can watch free with ads, I'll be fine. If VRV can live without a paywall, Funimation can.
Hmm it an nice addition to the line up, but at the moment don't see myself downloading it on my switch.
I hope its better than the PS4 app. I love their selection of anime, but its awful even trying to get an episode to play sometimes.
I dont care. It's not available in Norway, but I really wanna see the new Higurashi. I wish Crunchyroll had the license instead.
Never really thought much about media apps on Switch. Didn't even know YouTube was available! I would never use it for streaming docked as I have other devices and I wouldn't want a 720p portable streaming device.
On a different subject, 'binge' is one of the most overused words in the English language these days. Its use above is a perfect example of how it is put into sentences for the sake of it.
Oooh yes! I love this.
Now please add some new nintendo animea on it and i would pay any amount to subscibe lol.
If they could run the streaming app as a small picture-in-picture window it would be something I’d be interested in. That way I could play a game while also watching something.
Hopefully we get Crunchyroll sometime sooner rather than later, although due to Funimation acquiring Crunchyroll I suspect a price hike in the near future. I wonder how likely it is they offer a bundle sub..
Would prefer crunchyroll considering I pay for it but this is a start
*american anime lovers
Sadly it's not Crunchyroll for all of us who prefer subs over dubs.
I’ll probably download if it’s available but I don't know how often I’d actually use it. I’ve probably on used Hulu & YouTube a handful of times over few years I’ve owned my Switch. Still nice to have the option.
I will say my kids to watch YouTube on their Switch pretty regularly & I could see them watching this often. They watch a lot of Funimation now via the AppleTV.
Wish Netflix and Prime were available on the Switch. My Blu-ray Player and TV apps are rubbish.
Funimation is one of the reasons I pirate a lot of the anime I watch, they're terribad. Bad localizations, adding political propaganda where it didn't originally exist, not paying many of their translators, etc.
I generally buy anime on Blu-ray if it's not published by Funimation or Crunchyroll, but if they had a hand in bringing it over, they don't get my money. Wish the Switch allowed local media files like the PSP or Vita. Heck, the 3DS had a music player.
I currently have Crunchyroll, has does this app compare. From reading comments it seems that Funimation isn't as great. But I don't know.
Well, we do have a lot of anime games on the Switch. It would be blasphemous without the anime shows.
P.S. I think Funimation bought out Crunchy Roll or it might've been Sony. Regardless, we'll have the best of both worlds.
Bonus if so, but won't cry if it doesn't happen. Still feel the same about Netflix.
hopefully it's better than every other terrible app Funimation has ever made.
@SoIDecidedTo Funimation is a terrible company in terms of business, but they have a better selection of anime than Crunchyroll. All of their apps are terrible except for mobile and their actual site, but the ones that do work are great. They also just bought Crunchyroll so you'll most likely have to switch at some point.
@LatsaSpege To be fair they have a lot more subs now, especially with newer series, but I don't know why I'm defending one of the worst companies to ever exist anyways.
BTW Funimation just bought Crunchyroll so RIP
Careful now, one more app and the Switch will have nearly as much content as the DSi
@LatsaSpege They offer subs for all of their shows, so that's a non issue.
They just bought Crunchyroll so if they get the anime from Crunchyroll on Funimation and bring the app to switch with offline streaming I'll be in Anime heaven
I really never use my Switch for streaming, but my kids should be happy about this.
This is great news as long as the app works. I tried the app on the PS4 and it had lots of bugs.
Interesting news. I might be willing to try it, though I usually only watch Funimation on their site or on my Roku--the experience tends to be buggy or laggy everywhere else.
A very niche use case. Most people who own a switch already own another device they use for streaming where the app has been available for years. Nintendo and Funimation are almost 4 years late on this implementation.
Okay... I'm going to pass. Why pay a subscription when there's AnimeLog on youtube that let's you legally watch anime for FREE?
I am down for another streaming service. Hilariously enough, I just finished the 2nd season of High School DxD today!
Yay! It doesn't work great on my PS4 for whatever reason so I usually have to cast it to my TV which only works when my phone and TV feel like cooperating so this will be nice.
@BenAV my switch is basically a youtube system for me. Over 2k hours on youtube lol. Switch barley has any good games unfortunately
@BoyfriendOfDeath it's actually pretty good, just watched AoT in 4k this past week
@LatsaSpege funimation also has subs, you just got to change the language before selecting
@Envy Just not a system for your personal tastes I guess. Hundreds of excellent games to pick from for me.
Funimation is ruining anime with ideology. Meh. Also probably only available in USA.
@Facelord This.
I would rather Hulu or Netflix, Youtube, or other streaming services that isn't Funimation.
Funimation? Never heard of them. I was gonna ask if that was the people who made the old, He Man/She Ra toons, but I think that was called something else.
I'd prefer Crunchyroll to be honest
@MARl0 Well, I guess every show I don't care about lol
If I can't watch Fruits Basket (2019) sub than what's the point
