While we've been waiting for the return of the Mother video game series, the Hobonichi Mother Project has been filling the void with all sorts of goodies.
To top it off, it's now announced it will temporarily open two shop displays in Japan to sell Mother merchandise. The first shop, in Osaka, will open up later this month on 19th November and will operate through till 6th December. It will then move on to Tokyo, with its doors open from 14th - 27th December.
Some highlights within the shop will be a display of the Mother no Kotoba script book and a giant Mr. Saturn Plush - the biggest one on record. The shop will also sell all sorts of items that have been revealed throughout 2020 including the Franklin Badge, bead charms, and smaller plushies of notable characters.
While this may not be related to a new game or re-release, it's nice to know this series hasn't been completely forgotten about.
In fact, the other week, when Nintendo revealed it would be localising the Famicom version of the original Fire Emblem, Mother 3 began trending on social media.

Really? My mum’s getting her own pop-up shops in Japan? Blimey, she’s gone up in the world.
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT nintendo YOU better Bring mother 3 to usa!
You gotta be kidding me, pop up shops? I know it's more popular in Japan, but for a series that has been confirmed dead for a long time, as well as kinda ignored by Nintendo outside of Smash. Not a bad thing, just surprised. I doubt Mother 3 will get a localization due to...a poor decision made for a certain area of the game, but with all this going on I would expect a surprise new entry or mother 1+2 switch port. My expectations and hopes will remain low, I'll leave the complaining to twitter
Here we go again more mother news but nothing about a trilogy collection, localization of mother 3 or god forbid a new game.😒
@PBandSmelly also don't mistake my comment for negativity, this rocks! Just very out of left field...something Nintendo is very familiar with
Scalpers gonna have a field day with these limited-time stores.
@nessisonett
I really do hope that you do not refer to your mother as "it". 😆
Mother gets its own friggin' shop in Japan before Mother 3 gets localised in the West. 😂
Even if they were to ever localise it though, my concern is that it would be censored beyond recognition and filled with modern rhethoric that would have sounded completely out of place in the era in which the game was originally made (hell it sounds stupid and tacky now), which is my main concern with localisations of older games (including the upcoming localisation of the original Fire Emblem).
Stay true to the period and vision of the original authors or don't bother.
I've said it before, but take that art style, the one they're using for the comic, and remake Mother 1 and 2 (maybe 3?). The games are great in concept, but held back by a bunch of dated stuff.
@PBandSmelly What is that poor decision?
@Yanina
There is a certain part in the game that portrays homosexuals in a very...strange light. Even if it wasn't meant to harm, it REALLY made me uncomfortable. I would say it was a product of it's time, but come on. This also doubles as preeetty transphobic as well. As someone who is questioning themselves, seeing more and more people view gay and trans people as that is very harmful. It hurts.
This is so bizarre...
Imagine a game looking like that artwork.......
Can you imagine an Earthbound remake in the style of that lead pic?
@PBandSmelly Yeah, it’s not really a negative portrayal in the sense that the Magypsies are entirely heroic while still being trans but it’s a clumsy portrayal. Mostly to be expected from Japan in the 2000s but still, it’s just all a bit off.
@PBandSmelly Thanks for explaining! So also no option trough changing the context in the subtitles?
I love it, but every Mother news, particularly those exclusive to Japan causes me non-literal physical pain (?) 😂
@Yanina The sprites kinda make it hard to change the context!
@Octane they are absolutely perfect the way they are
@Octane I'd be down for that. Maybe they could make a Mother 4 with that style, I'd love that too.
@nessisonett I see. That is a shame and contradicts the whole vibe of the game I guess.
Edit: I just googled it. Without knowing the context, I think the Magypsies look kinda cool. Maybe there could be a way to turn it around to something positive. Like The Rocky Horror Picture Show or something.
These shops are going to be open before the NES ROM is added to Nintendo Switch Online
@Yanina Oh yeah absolutely, they’re not portrayed negatively as such and a remake could make them lean more into drag as an artform rather than a crude and lazy stereotype. It’s just a very very Japanese perspective and one that kinda jars these days.
This game stinks!
Nintendo loves flogging a franchise they ignore constantly.
@nessisonett Interesting! Some trans women still rock their beards, I know Wandersong had a mermaid who still had some bristles, they just embraced it instead of making fun of it.
Here's hoping the game can still make its way over. Perhaps frame it as drag, like you suggested.
Wait so is this a licensed store or unofficial???
Nintendo should absolutely remake this game with one of their fun little craft art styles.
@PBandSmelly You're not the first person who generalises gay people as being queer. Mother 3 isn't portraying gay people at all. Hell, Mother 2 portrayed a gay person and that's just a kid from Jeff's school, nothing different to it. Maybe stop thinking that if a male character acts feminine, they're meant to be gay. It hurts me as a gay person.
@Chlocean It was framed as drag, always has been. Some people simply believe anything male that's portrayed as female equals gay.
This mostly shows a lot of people have a limited view on LGBT matters. There's only gay, and if it's portrayed feminine it's instantly a "misportrayal of gays," as there's only gays. But there's also men that enjoy to dress as women, there's people who doubt their own gender identity, not just their preferred gender of attraction.
@Thirteen1355 I'm with ya. Trust me, as someone currently on hormones, I'm with ya.
@nessisonett @Yanina I mean, they could just take a page from Disney's book(first and most likely the last I'll ever say that) and give it some warning of stereotypical connotations, like what Disney did with Peter Pan on Disney+, make sure to denounce it before people get their pitchforks. Maybe raise the age rating to T/16 or 12, it would most likely have gotten an E 10+/7 or maybe 12 otherwise.
Also, i think anyone who wanted to play it knows about the Magypsies by now.
Nice! It's good to know that MOTHER is kinda active...
