Nintendo has dominated the UK charts throughout September in terms of both software and hardware sales, a new GamesIndustry.biz report reveals.
GfK Entertainment data suggests that more than 1.07 million physical games were sold in the UK last month, with 41.7% of those being Switch titles. The majority of those Switch games were Nintendo-published titles, too, with the Big N's mascot names accounting for 32.3% of the country's physical game sales throughout the month.
Super Mario 3D All-Stars unsurprisingly came out on top, managing to narrowly outsell the heavily marketed Marvel's Avengers which released on rival platforms. You can see the UK's top 20 physical games for September 2020 below.
Position | Title |
---|---|
1 | Super Mario 3D All-Stars |
2 | Marvel's Avengers |
3 | Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 |
4 | Animal Crossing: New Horizons |
5 | Mario Kart 8 Deluxe |
6 | Minecraft (Switch) |
7 | Grand Theft Auto 5 |
8 | NBA 2K21 |
9 | PGA Tour 2K21 |
10 | Ring Fit Adventure |
11 | Ghost of Tsushima |
12 | Minecraft Dungeons |
13 | FIFA 20 |
14 | Super Mario Odyssey |
15 | Mafia: Definitive Edition |
16 | EA Sports UFC 4 |
17 | F1 2020 |
18 | Crash Bandicoot: N.Sane Trilogy |
19 | Paper Mario: The Origami King |
20 | LEGO Harry Potter Collection |
146,000 gaming consoles are reported to have been sold in the UK throughout September, with Switch being top of the pile. In fact, Switch sales are up 90% when compared with the same time period in 2019, and PS4 and Xbox One are also seeing year-on-year growth despite their next-generation systems being just around the corner.

"Killing it" I can't accept that as a positive term. It doesn't make sense to me.
YEAH! Go Nintendo!
@Orangezap89 It comes from the notion of triumphing over something. You're 'killing it', you're destroying it with your impressive actions, vanquishing a foe so to speak. You didn't just beat it or best it, you killed it. It can't come back from what you're doing.
I mean yeah it's kind of unpleasant and brutal if you really stop and pick it apart, but it's also been common usage for so long it can't be denied it has a clear positive usage.
@Orangezap89 and yet somehow it is a positive term! Though I must admit it is a strange saying, now that you've mentioned it. Anyways, well done Nintendo! A far cry from the dire Wii U period!
Comedians that have a good set will also say they ‘killed’.
@Orangezap89 I don‘t see it to be used here as a „positive term“, but as a metaphor to describe an observation. I cannot see any judgement of the author about the facts. Maybe you assume that he is a Nintendo fan and he likes the fact, and so killing would be a positive term, but this is just an assumption.
@Orangezap89 @Ogbert @roz061
Killing it.. Surviving it.. Thriving in it..
Whichever term you want to use, Nintendo are doing all of the above right now, that’s for sure!
It's just an expression like when you say someones on fire, it rarely means they are literally being incinerated
Hooray, we’ll surely see that money put into newer and better games.... or not.
Glad to see Nintendo doing well,, lots of great games in the pipeline so 2021 should be an interesting year.
"1.07 million physical games were sold in the UK last month"
So who says physical media is on the way out??
Amazon had Mario Odyssey for 45 € yesterday.
Thats 5€ above the Resale Market in my Area, so a good Deal for some.
It's a bit sad that Mario Odyssey is outselling Paper Mario at this stage.
@quigtendo Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart and BOTW will have high attachment rates with new hardware sales. Although I do note the absence of BOTW in list. It is often out of stock in the UK or a stupidly high price.
@Orangezap89 just wait until we can say 'Nintendo is completely raping us' as a positive saying. As in, total domination of a market.
Goooo romdumps!
GTA V still in the top 10 list!!!! How is that even possible?
For the first time this year, I played a little part in this. Picked up Mario 3D All Stars for me (loving it!) and Paper Mario and Animal Crossing for the kids at Chrisrmas.
Mario Kart 8 just keeps selling. At this point I've given up hope for a sequel on the Switch.
I thought Nintendo wasn't competing against Sony and Microsoft.
Pretty good for a Turn based game likr origami King to stay in the top 20.
September was the month that both PS5 and XSX|S pre-orders opened, so if they were going to start hurting Switch sales, it would have started to happen last month.
That doesn't seem to have occured. At all.
More money mean a New Switch coming....
Further proof we are living in strange times.
@westman98 because the Switch is bought for more then just just how much GPU you. And this is what alot of NintenDoomed fandom forgets.
Duh yeh of course they are. I have a PS4 and Xbox one and the fact is, there is something special about Nintendo games that just seems better than most games on the other systems (apart from Horizon Zero Dawn and Forza Horizon). OK they don't always get things 100 % right but being 50 years old I still get that good feeling playing Mario and Zelda games. All I ask is for is another 2D Mario game and more DLC for Mario Kart, or better still a new MK game!!
Love to see Nintendo doing well! But PS4 and Xbone are on their way out. I would be more worried if Nintendo wasn't doing well.
@Orangezap89 It's just our violence loving western culture.
@jimtendog @Northwind you guys say that, but if you actually read the article... ‘...PS4 and Xbox One are also seeing year-on-year growth despite their next-generation systems being just around the corner.‘
Of course All Stars beat Avengers..... that game is trash and I'm a massive Marvel fan with an Xbox One as well as a Switch.
@Crono1973
They don't have to be for news of their accomplishments & game consoles to be reported. It's not even like the guy or gal here reporting this news was comparing direct numbers to how the Switch did compared to them. Honestly not that hard to understand really.
@Heavyarms55
Yeah well actually reading the article reveals how easily debunked that narrow thinking is considering that even in the article it's saying that both of those consoles are experiencing year-on-year growth as well.
@AmplifyMJ Lol Exactly my friend. Apologies for pretty much aping your point. Lol
@gameboy1975 Would they be considered competing if people were comparing direct sales numbers between the Switch and the PS4 and/or the Xbox One?
So many comments focused on picking apart the articles title lol
@gameboy1975 Nope, my opinion stands. Just because PS4 and Xbone aren't doing poorly doesn't change it. If Switch wasn't doing as well as it is, I'd be worried.
@jimtendog ‘I don't think anyone's buying a PS4 or Xbox One right now’ sure, I read your comment.
@jimtendog you’re trying to downplay Nintendo’s UK success by saying very few people are buying alternatives at the minute. Reading your original comment one could safely assume you didn’t actually read the article, no big deal, don’t let it ruin your day.
@jimtendog I myself was impressed and surprised that PS4 / XBONE sales were up, my original reply was more to point that out more than anything, as I assumed incorrectly you hadn’t read the article in full. My apologies
@Heavyarms55
It can stand with you all that you like bruv. Cool & nothing wrong with that; but your opinion is just that though. And it doesn't validate anything or make you right. So hey, have at it my friend.
@gameboy1975 I'm not wrong. But whatever you want to think dude. You do you too.
