Nintendo has shared its roundup of the most-downloaded Switch eShop games during August 2020. Since launching back in March Animal Crossing: New Horizons regularly takes the monthly top spot, although last month it was displaced by new release Paper Mario: The Origami King. In August it was a much older release that took the top spot, though.
Yes, up three places from July, the evergreen Minecraft was the most-downloaded game on the Switch eShop in August 2020. There's also a new entry at number 3 in the form of Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition and indie release Spiritfarer makes an impressive debut at 4.
You can check out the full list below. It's based on the number of Nintendo eShop downloads (so no physical sales) in European territories during the whole month:
- Minecraft
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons
- Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition
- Spiritfarer
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- 51 Worldwide Games
- Stardew Valley
- Paper Mario: The Origami King
- Minecraft Dungeons
- Cuphead
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- Super Mario Party
- Pokémon Sword
- Rocket League
- Hollow Knight
Did you download any of these titles on Switch last month? Any surprises in the top 15? Tell us below.

Can’t wait for GTA V to get ported on Switch and dominate the charts alongside Minecraft.
BotW is still there. Wow!
Crystal Chronicles and Spiritfarer performed very well.
Bar FFCC, I've downloaded all those games myself. Mostly prior to this month.
Have Zelda BOTW as a physical.
Really nice to see Spiritfarer, Cuphead and Hollow Knight up there.
Stardew is such a beast.
I wonder how many of Spiritfarer's downloads are from the Russian eShop where it's super cheap for some reason. I bought it from there instead of the Australian eShop as it cost me about $10 instead of $43. Aside from that it's pretty impressive that it's right up there on the list given that it came out in the second half of the month, is a multiplatform game and has a pretty high price in other regions and had no launch sale (unlike all the other games shadow dropped after the indie presentation). It's a very good game so it's nice to see it doing well.
Great to see Stardew Valley still regularly in the top 10 after being released a couple years ago. Must be a lot of new Switch owners jumping in after great word of mouth or maybe tired of Animal Crossing and wanting a new time sink.
While I have abandoned Animal Crossing, I still get the urge to play SV! While I have done everything and I'm waiting for the update, its great to start a new farm to do things differently and it always feels great.
I've also pre-ordered the physical version so its my 3rd time buying it (first time on Steam) but its a cheap game to buy and I feel Eric Barone deserves every copy sold, the support and updates given on this game is incredible and his next game is an instant but because of that.
@hadrian I have also played ACNH and SV. I love them both, but even with 100 hours in SV, i prefer NH. That's my preference, but there is no denying the incredible story of Barone's dev work.
@BenAV the only reason I have not bought spiritfarer is because I am still playing ACNH at least an hour a day. I think it may be distracting to play them at the same time. Are they different enough to play together?
@dugan I'd say so. It's a bit more linear story-wise than something like Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley and once you finish it that's more or less it. I got pretty addicted to it and played through the whole game in a few days.
Interesting that Rocket League is in there seeing as it's going FTP soon.
Minecraft is still selling that well just blows me away. What age group do you think plays it the most?
I bought it for Xbox 360 way back in the day. I guess it was kind of gimped out on wiiu so this is Nintendo only gamers first chance to get a full version.
Great to see that Stardew Valley is still up there. Also awesome that a four year old game is still being supported with meaningful content by one guy.
