DOOM Eternal was released in March on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC - so what's going on with the Switch release?
In a recent interview with Digital Foundry's John Linneman during PAX x EGX, id Software's Marty Stratton provided gave Nintendo fans with a long-awaited update. Here's exactly what he had to say:
"I wish I could give you like specifics cause I know...I read all the comments, when we say anything about Doom Eternal, like there's always one out of every five comments, yeah 'how about you tell us about the Switch'. I know people are anxious."
"We're trying to make it the best version of the game it possibly can be. So we've been working with Panic Button, they're also - like everybody - work from home, so it's taking a little bit longer to get there...we want it to be everything it possibly can be. It's very close, and we're trying to be very uncompromising with what it needs to be, because there's a high demand for it."
"We will be talking about it again, in the not-to-distant future. It is close, but I can't say exactly how close."
So - it's "close" and we can expect to hear more about this version soon. This follows on from Stratton's comments in July when he said he was "super excited" for Switch owners to get their hands on it, and mentioned how it would be "every bit as good as DOOM 2016".
Most recently, id Software announced the game's first campaign expansion, The Ancient Gods, Part One. It will launch next month on 20th October. Have you been holding out for DOOM Eternal on Switch? Leave a comment down below.

So Doom Eternal for Switch around October 2021?
Just went back to find a few secrets I missed during the first playthrough of Doom 2016. Such an amazing game!
This is great news I genuinely thought they'd canned the port.
It’s not ‘normally’ what I play but then I normally didn’t play the Witcher - and thoroughly enjoyed it on the Switch.
So I am very interested to see the final product and if it’s a good port then I’m buying!
This is what I love about the Switch. It opens me up to new gaming experiences that I would have never thought about beforehand.
"We will be talking about it again, in the not-to-distant future" is just code for "We're canceling the port lol cya suckers."
Good to know it's still happening, the "very close" wording would make you hope for a release before Christmas.... Let's see.
With how long this has been delayed with no trailers or even an update, it better be a DQXI tier port instead of ported like HOB.
Already bought the deluxe version (future DLC included) for PC for probably half of what the Switch version will cost. Hard to get motion aiming on PC though...
At this point, I think they should probably include the first expansion in the package for free. I know there was nothing they could do about the pandemic, but that doesn't change the fact that the Switch version is going to be released several months after every other version.
They’ve been saying the same thing for the past 3 months already....
it's so close it's now getting quite scary......
HA HA HA! 'Close' but no cigar. Just release it and stop teasing.
Currently playing through Doom 3, that has me pretty impressed so when I finally get around to 2016 and eternal it may actually blow my mind!
Hopefully this will see a pre Xmas release, there’s a couple more partner directs to go!
"we want it to be everything it possibly can be."
comes out along side the switch revision in 2021 with a major upgrade over og switch version
Great, with Covid everything is going slowly, so no worries. We expect something big with this port, so it's good they're taking their time xD
Let's see what Switch is capable of!
Isn't there meant to be more mini directs this year? Maybe on one of them
@TheNewButler it‘ll be even "better" if we have to buy the game for 60$ on Switch and it comes with literally nothing, buy the season pass again........while on other platforms Doom Eternal is already in the bargains bins and sales down to 20-30$ >_>
Free if you count buying a 300 quid console as free.
I’ll be playing it on PS5 long before the Switch it seems. Sad, but I’m not sure why they’ve dragged their heels on this, it’s definitely going to lose them sales
Yup still just waiting...
Dang, a lot of pessimism towards the Switch version of this game...Would it kill people to be positive for once?
Anyway, I'm still awaiting for the Switch version, don't really mind the wait as long as it's a solid port. Which I'm pretty confident it will be based off Panic Buttons previous work.
That's what she said
I’m waiting patiently. I could have bought it for my pc by now but I want to see switch version first. If it’s good I’ll probably end up getting both.
Hopefully it won't be as blurry as the rest of Panic Buttons work.
I already have this for my PS4; great game, that’s for certain. Curious how the Switch version will play out...
This definitely feels like Nintendo announces new hardware and then more info on DOOM Eternal is shared with the game launching around the time of the new hardware.
@okeribok
Regarding motion aiming on PC:
I got tired of the Switch version's long loading times and frequent crashes in Paladins, so I switched to the Steam version and did this solution:
Synched my Pro Controller with Steam and went to controller settings in Big Picture Mode. From here you can remap buttons and stuff.
Steam does recognize gyro inputs. Click on the middle portion of the controller image:
https://ibb.co/4d0pggY
^ it's where the big xbox button is in the middle of this picture.
And from there you can set this input to be recognized as either a 2nd camera stick (the inferior option, but it's there for games that don't respond well to mouse + gamepad inputs at the same time), or as a mouse.
Play around with the mouse sensitivity settings for a bit and maybe set a button, like the screenshot button for example, as a toggle to turn gyro on and off and you're set!
Since this a general controller setting it works for all your pc games, as long as they don't throw a hissy fit at the mouse + gamepad combination like Paladins likes to do...
Apologies if my explanation isn't all that clear, I did this modification like years ago >.>
Also, can people stop predicting “Switch Pro” under every damn article? Nintendo just said they’re gonna keep going with the current Switch and it’s gonna have a longer lifespan than their usual consoles, move on already, there’s no Switch Pro.
Wait it's not out yet? I've already seen the PS4 version for 20€
I’d imagine with Nintendo’s weak Xmas line up, they would want this out and on shelves before Xmas as it could be one of those titles that does well from an exhausted Nintendo chart.
I want to play it, I want to play it on Switch, and I want to play it on Switch for about €30 tops for a physical copy, 15 for digital. Luckily, I can wait and don't fear "missing out" if it never happens, and many games I wanted to play in the past have since gone below the maximum price I was willing to pay for them, so it's not like I don't have plenty of games to play in the meantime.
@NinjaSyao thanks for the tip! I am trying multiple methods (dualshock 4 with ds4windows, steam controller and switch pro controller), but some games (bethesda) respond differently. Super hot mind control delete, horizon zero dawn, star wars battleftont work perfectly, but doom is unplayably stuttery. Playing around with the setting requires relaunching and even with m.2 ssd it is still slow.
Hope the new pro switch will have faster and more storage!
Are they just going to stealth drop it? Sounds like it, that would be pretty cool.
They said that back in July...
It’ll be in the October partner showcase. Release early November probably, as has been done in 2017 .
we are working hard to make a good ported version, the real problem is that we are avoiding to MK11 & The Outer Worlds bull%shyyt versions. its not so easy bring this game with this hardware.
This game really didn't click with me. Doom 2016 is one of my favourite games of the generation but Eternal was a slog. I completed it then had no interest in replaying. I will play the DLC when it gets patched for PS5 to see if it finally clicks.
Really curious to see how the Switch copes as my PS4 Pro struggled at times.
I just need Doom 64 and Eternal then I have all the Doom games on the switch.
With Doom 1 and 2 offering downloadable maps. I feel these games are great value for money. With Panic button taking care of the port I can’t wait.
@Itachi2099 no there won’t be a switch pro. It will be called super switch or new switch.
Even if it isn’t 4K I am sure it will be like the N3DS as in faster processor and higher frame rate. Better battery life. It will be designed to fit in along side the switch with games being able to run on both.
It's OK, they just needed the extra time to implement Isabelle.
@Lord I haven't seen their Xmas lineup yet, what have they got?
@KryptoniteKrunch agree hard on this. They did an amazing job with Wolfenstein
@Itachi2099 the Switch Pro is such a weird fever dream that it’s never leaked anywhere and Nintendo has explicitly denied it multiple times but people who grew up on the Xbox cycle just “know” it’s coming.
Meanwhile us NES babies remember the Halcyon days of the expansion pack, and reading that a handful of Japanese kids played a little something called the “64DD”.
Nintendo is a game developer that has novelty systems, the other companies are hardware developers that make games. I wish people would just stop conflating the two.
Buy an Xbox if you need an Xbox, people. Nintendo hasn’t been in the “more juice” game since the SNES, but I don’t see the same level of Nostalgia for the the Dreamcast instead of the 64, even though it doubled the power, had more adult games, and had a more standard controller.
(Quick shout out to the dreamcast controller as it said “oh no!” and “you suck!” if you failed a challenge in THPS)
November direct and shadow release confirmed
@GannonBanned
I disagree only in that N64 and Gamecube were very much in the "more juice" mould. N64 was the more capable machine in its gen and the Gamecube was a mini powerhouse second only to the Xbox beast in its gen.
Wii was the start of Nintendo's new approach.
@Andgiles21
Yo numpty, Westman was having a joke and he was clearly quoting what was written in the article which was "not-to-distant".
Try reading the article next time yeah?
Here's hoping that this game is still a 2020 release. It would kind of hurt to see this game delayed all the way until March 2021.
Then again, as Shigeru Miyamoto said, "a delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad."
Take all the time you need as long as the truth is being told about optimization. I've been gaming through enough generations to know with proper optimization you can make anything great and fun. However, optimization takes lots of resources and time which unfortunately aren't in endless abundance in the gaming industry for a lot of companies. Hell with the perfect team you could a make version of Doom 2016 on N64. Would be heavily different but as long as the spirit and general gameplay remains it would still be dope. I'm easily pleased as long as I'm having fun.
My gaming plate is pretty full right now so if Doom Eternal came out soon it would be sidelined for a some time while I burn through 3D All Stars. If it comes out around Monster Hunter Rise release then it might as well not come out at all
They better do release right I got the CE with the extras and will be pi5ed if I miss getting my PreOrder bonus....
In my dreams they've been optimizing it to take full advantage of Switch pro
I wonder how much of the game will be on cartridge? That's all I'm concerned about. If I had to guess, October partner announcement for November release. That would give the game a renewed focus for the holidays. I'm sure Bethesda and Nintendo have been discussing this.
@popey1980 their main bulk of sales wouldn't come from a nintendo platform, pc is where doom is at
I'm patiently waiting for the Switch version. Hopefully, it'll be better than DOOM 2016.
I tried that version and it works fine for me and my gaming no problem with the grapics. And considering Switch is Portable that is even more the expected.
Anyone that’s played eternal knows why we haven’t heard anything about this port, if they did a straight port of the combat encounters there’s too much going at once for it to feel right at 30fps with lots of drops it would make the difficultly unintentionally hellish, there’s typically double or triple enemy counts compared to the last game. I imagine they’ve had to redesign the bulk of the game to work at the lowered frame rate and not be infuriating because of it, for example there’s no way they haven’t had to change the infamous Marauder, the timing window to counter him would be near impossible for the average player to deal with.
@eaglebob345 nah more like this coming november.
@SalvorHardin switch version is being built from the ground with a new custom engine just for it reason why we shouldnt doubt panic button since they havent failed on delivering good ports.
As someone who was very excited about getting the Switch version, I've been almost turned completely off of it. From simultaneous launch in March to 'release info coming very soon' in July to here we are in almost October and it's just more of this more info 'coming soon' stuff.
I can understand delaying it from launch since Switch is something else unfortunately, but here we are ⅔ of the year after the fact and we haven't even seen the game running, let alone any true release info. At least with Bayonetta 3, it's an exclusive so we don't have to stew over watching other consoles get to play it far sooner.
The game has long since been for a bargain on PSbox and, if you were already getting next gen anyways, you'll get a(n upgraded?) copy for totally nothing to play on that system as well, meanwhile we haven't so much as gotten a miniclip of how the game will s'posedly look...and for full price no less. >_>
This was a day one purchase even with the initial delay, but now I'm in the 'not sure tbh' camp.
Pathetic, honestly. Good job killing the hype and the potential for huge sales.
VERY excited for this to come out.
I could be playing it on PS4, but hell, the Switch is so damn perfect.
@KoRn1619 especially since panic button are handling it.
I loved DOOM 2016 on the Switch. It was such a solid port of a graphically intensive game. I'm not a huge FPS fan, but I've always enjoyed the Doom series for some reason.
They should take their time. I’d rather have a good port than rushed garbage. It’s not like the world, nor the industry was ready for the inconveniences of a pandemic. I appreciate a good effort.
@Itachi2099 *6 months after it came out in march.
@eaglebob345 that’s my feeling as well. They’ve been saying “not-so-distant future” for months. I don’t think I understand Bethesda’s meaning of the phrase.
This is already to late for me
Beat DOOM 2016 on Switch and absolutely loved it with my pro controller and in hand-held mode. Can't wait for this to release (then go on sale). Also might consider waiting for the PS5 version at this point though..
Better be very close, it's only 3 more months until the end of 2020. By the time the PS5 and Xbox Series X launch, this game would be yesterday's news meaning nobody is gonna care that it exist.
@charlieonholiday you'll learn. All the "new experiences" that port console is introducing you to have existed for months to years elsewhere, and for cheaper.
@okeribok
You're welcome ^^
My hopes for a Pro Switch (I doubt they would do a drastic upgrade like more RAM, better GPU, etc that would make it a Switch 2) is them adding DLSS to the new chip, which would greatly decrease the blurriness of some games (loved DOOM on Switch, but it was a bit too blurry at times for my liking) and them unlocking the max power of the current GPU and CPU.
They're downclocked heavily right now and it's surprising how much power people have been able to squeeze out of them with hacks.
Also, maybe make the screen 1080p and slightly bigger using that dead space that's now being used by the bezels around the screen. I would be happy with the Switch being able to output docked performance even in handheld and it should be possible now without murdering the battery life ^_^
Higher CPU speed has shown to help a lot with loading times and that's my biggest gripe with 3rd party games on the Switch: the load times can get veryyy long sometimes.
But this doesn't really need a new Switch, just Nintendo allowing more developers to max out the CPU during loading screens >.<
@SpaceKaren I travel for a living. So I am forced to paying the ‘Switch Tax’.
Been waiting for this. And will buy on the first day of release for sure
Yep. Been holding out this whole time. Almost picked it up on PS4 during a sale a few months back, but I really want this to be a Switch title for me.
@elpardo1984 Doom 3 was a great game but to me it never really felt like doom. More like a FPS horror. Doom 2016 and Eternal are more like modern versions of the original Dooms. Fast, frantic and fun. Kill about 10 demons in 30 seconds and keep mowing them down!
@AlecOfChaos true, it is a different tack than the other games but for £6 it is some of the best value on Switch. Doom 2016 will be next as soon as I find a cart at a decent price!
@elpardo1984 Yeah when I first played Doom 3 it blew me away. But 2016 oh boy, is that some fun time right there. Wife's watching TV and I'm laid on the couch ripping Imps 👿 jaws off 😆 hope you find a cheap copy buddy. Your gonna love it ✌
I already started playing on PC because I couldn't wait any longer. Hoping there is some sort of cross save so I don't have to start from scratch.
Hopefully you're doing well and we'll know more about this version soon.
....I can't believe I still read the words "work from home". I don't need to say this here, but.... you better ought to achieve perfection by making your species progress.
How about now, with Bethesda being a part of XGS?
Unfortunately, Doom Eternal wasn't as good as the one from 2016. Too colorful, strange emphasis on low-ammo and huge reliance on finishers, micro-arena based level design, stupid platforming sections, non-sense story... game just wasn't as coherent and fluid as the one from 2016. I would advise on lowering your expectations...
Yeah hi this article is still interesting.
I want this game so bad. I really hope it's released on switch before my heart disease kills me.
Better late than with 20fps on 480i resolution!
More than a month later, and we did not get this on the last Partner Showcase of the year. Something tells me this is a March 2021 release.
The amount of ambition this port has is fantastic, and I'll even appreciate the original thought of releasing this alongside its other platform variants. If this port truly brings out the Switch's capabilities, whether it runs a clear 1080p and/or smooth 60fps docked, then it ultimately proves that any port can be done on the Switch, as long as companies are willing to pay that much money, time, and effort.
they may well be compelled to keep delaying this as long as possible in order to "refresh" the title---i.e. prime the market of people who already bought it on other consoles, give them enough time between releases (of the same game) and then get that whole new second wave of first time players, PLUS the people who just need it on switch. I.E. give em time off, and ensure a second sale.
