Update (Fri 28th Aug, 2020 07:05 BST): Earlier this month, as part of the QuakeCon 2020 celebrations, id Software shared a teaser of its upcoming DLC campaign for DOOM Eternal. It's now revealed a full trailer at Gamescom Opening Night Live. See the original post (below) for more details about the upcoming Switch release.
Original article (Sat 8th Aug, 2020 04:45 BST): DOOM Eternal might not even be out on the Nintendo Switch yet, but that hasn't stopped id Software and Bethesda Softworks from teasing the game's first campaign expansion, The Ancient Gods, Part One.
This reveal was made by Marty Stratton and Hugo Martin in the opening presentation of QuakeCon 2020, and the full trailer for it will be revealed on 27th August at Gamescom Opening Night Live. Here's a bit about it (spoiler alert):
Your victory over the hordes of Hell spared Earth from a perilous, demon-infested fate, but saving humanity has upset the delicate balance of power in the heavens. Become the DOOM Slayer once again and set things right in DOOM Eternal’s first single-player expansion, The Ancient Gods, Part One.
Travel to previously uncharted realms of the DOOM universe and confront a new challenge head-on when The Ancient Gods, Part One releases for DOOM Eternal later this year.
This DLC expansion is part of the Year One Pass, included in the DOOM Eternal Deluxe Edition and available for purchase digitally. We have more to share soon on this exciting new chapter
Earlier this week Bethesda also confirmed that DOOM Eternal would be released on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 - with Xbox One and PlayStation 4 owners able to upgrade for free.
This brings us to the Switch version. The last official update we got was in July when Stratton said the plan was to lock in a release date "pretty soon" for the Switch, and with this year's QuakeCon now underway, we're hoping to hear more soon.
Have you been holding out for the Nintendo version of this game? What do you think of the new teaser? Tell us below.

The next gen upgrade and DLC plans were the nail in the coffin for the Switch version for me. I was really looking forward to double dipping on Switch but with no news on it this late in the game, I don't really care much at this point. Though can't wait to see how well it pushes the Switch!
Well we will be able to play Series X and PS5 versions before the Switch one.
They just said not too long ago that development was going well and it’s still coming to Switch. Hopefully holiday, this year.
Good stuff, just need a switch release now.
Wow, and we still don't have a release date for the Switch version. I know the pandemic has probably borked things but hopefully they can at least give us a timeframe if they're already working on DLC...
Might as well just hold off and release the Switch version with the DLC included at this point.
All of this is neat and all but we still have no updates on the Switch port of this game; I’m starting to lose hope.
(Granted I love the PS4 version to bits and bobs but I really wanted to take this game on the go with my Switch as well. (I travel a lot and having a good book or two and some killer games to whittle away the hours helps tremendously...)
@JR150 when you said the word “Borked...”, I immediately thought of Swedish Chef. Was that a Muppet reference?
@graysoncharles Would you please tell me how to include pictures in the comments?
@DoktorTotenKopf
Maybe!
I’m guessing it’s gone the way of Project Cars for Wii U. 😢
@JR150 I approve of your references and tip my hat to you. Bork Bork Bork!
Lol Nintendo fans getting the shaft job once again.
@Ralizah THAT would make me spring for the Switch version.
@graysoncharles That’s how I feel while I wait for Bloodstained to get performance updates.
At this point, I would rather that they delay the Switch version until the DLC is ready so that they can include everything on the cart, though given what cheap buttholes Bethesda are, I strongly doubt that they will even put the complete base game on the cart.
Meanwhile I'm playing Chex Quest 1 & 2 on the Wii. Take that you ugly green *****!
Wouldnt be shocked if the Switch version launched alongside the DLC as a more unified marketing strategy.
I was naively hoping they would use Quakecon to give a release date for the Switch version...
I don't get why this site posts this, since there's still no date for the Switch version of Doom Eternal. This is just rubbing in some salt!
With owning Doom, 2, 3, 64 and 2016 all on Switch, it feels right to get Eternal on Switch, but if its getting free upgrades for next gen systems, then I may as well pick it up in a sale for PS4 instead of waiting for the £50 Switch release.
I wonder if the Switch version still will have the original soundtrack. Maybe they attracted a different composer to do the soundtrack for this version, that would be a sin (the original composer has parted ways because of some troubles).
They need to cement in a release date shortly for Switch... When it released on PS4 and Xbox One we were told it would release "soon" and "shortly" on Switch...
That time has now passed....
Been holding out for Switch version just to play on my Switch again. It however is on sale due to Quakecon so very sorely tempted to just buy it on Xbox at the moment. Maybe get the Switch version if it ever materialises and is in a sale.
Well probably see a screenshot of Bayonetta 3 first!
Lol! Go ahead and tell GameStop to take their Nintedo Switch display boxes of DOOM Eternal down.
I lost a lot of interest in this game after buying it on my PS4 and playing about 20 hours.
I would have gotten it on the Switch and even waited 2 months but I got fed up of waiting and while it's a solid game, it's not worth the cost of double dipping.
I’m still waiting for this on Switch. While I could get it cheaper for the Xbox One X or PS4 Pro, I want my gyro aiming!
I don’t want to go back to regular console analogue stick aiming with its massive dead zones and unpredictable acceleration (in fairness some games like Titanfall 2 and Gears 4 offered the ability to tweak the dead zone, but they’re exceptions to the rule I think).
Somehow this game just ran out of steam for me by the time I reached the final mission, and I found myself wanting it to hurry up and end. I still don't want to play it, so I doubt I'll even be bothering with the Switch version at this point.
@DoktorTotenKopf To include a picture, you go and grab the URL of the picture. Then you paste it into a comment with some tags surrounding it:

Only you'll use square brackets instead of parentheses.
You can link a YouTube video as well.

Again, use square brackets instead of parentheses.
@fox_mattcloud I own all of those too on the Switch hehehe. I'll wait, patiently for Eternal to come to Switch.
The Switch version went the way of Dark Souls Remastered. For those who don't remember, Dark Souls Remastered was announced in the January 2018 Direct Mini to be releasing May 2018 (same day as the other consoles), launch went ahead for the other consoles meanwhile Switch got delayed with no release date and then finally got it in October 2018.
Already a $30 game on PC. Why I rarely play the waiting game on Switch.
@Giygas_95 thank you, very much.
I have a ps4 and Switch but I'm waiting for the Switch version
Oh looks it’s coming to XBSX and PS5 so everyone starts moaning about the Switch version. It’s so terrible and a system that is selling out every time new stock appears is sooo doomed!!! 😂😂😂😂 Seriously the trolls and doom (pun totally intended) mongers need to get a grip. Switch and Nintendo isn’t even 4 years old and is still growing.
Honestly the Switch version is kind of being devalued by the minute at this point. They haven't offered screenshots, or footage of any kind, they've announced DLC for the other platforms that looks to be a beefy story expansion that further prolongs the wait on the Switch version, and they just announced next-gen versions for PS5/Series X without saying a word about Switch in general
The only people I see getting this on Switch are people who literally have no other option. The game is now coming to next-gen systems, and in addition to that people who buy the PS4/XB1 versions right now will get those versions for free, and in addition to that, the Steam version is now heavily discounted down to 20 ish dollars because of the ongoing QuakeCon sale. When the Switch version comes out, literally all the hype surrounding this game would either have died down significantly, or would be focused on the next-gen versions entirely.
Yeah. After playing it one Xbox one X, if they get it running decently on Switch it will be nothing short of a miracle. Maybe it was too ambitious of a port and they just can’t get it right without a significant rework.
The Switch version hasnt even been givin a release date yet. I bought a new copy on ps4 in May for $30.
No switch version details?
@brandonbwii no it hasnt they wouldnt screw the switch base like that since they brought all the classic dooms to switch plus the 2016 version as well.
i no longer care for doom eternal on switch. I didn't mind waiting at first but now that we have 0 details months after its announcement, no screenshots, no gameplay and no release date, it's clear to me that the nintendo switch lost its "class citizen" treatment bethesda and id software mentioned.
the switch is a little more than 3 years old, with a 61m install base. I'm tired as a switch owner to either get big games way later or not at all. I'm also tired that every publisher treats the switch as a double dip platform rather than an actual console.
within the last 4 months i have barely bought any games on my switch and started getting everything cheaper on my ps4 with the occasional 40$ game here and there on switch. My motto now for the switch is: "if this game is cheaper elsewhere, that's where i'll get it" I refuse to pay 80cad for something that is 39.99 cad anywhere else, even if it's portable.
@Casual_Gamer95 In that case I strongly recommend getting the PC version if your specs are up to snuff. It's like 20 ish dollars right now because of Bethesda's god tier QuakeCon sale on Steam
@RiasGremory I hope you’re right.
Really hope this does well on Switch, but I'm not holding my breath. The PS4 version is already starting to be featured in sales, and that will also have a free next gen upgrade.
I'm sure the virus has affected the Switch port's development pretty badly, but I'm getting the Watch_Dogs Wii U vibes where it feels like it's gonna come so late that it won't even matter anymore.
@TG16_IS_BAE lol RIGHT?! Bloodstained is terrible with updates.
They tried to make that “current” status page and it hasn’t been updated in weeks.
@TheFrenchiestFry turns out i do have decent pc specs but i run linux. proton is gonna be the only way to play it
I’m still to get into the the first game on my switch. Finding it hard to play FPS without a keyboard and mouse, also adjust to the rush attack style of this game. Plus my 2 kids would have nightmares and need serious therapy if they ever saw me play this haha
@DBZdan12 Exactly. For me, it’s another remind to AVOID Kickstarter!
One of my previous accounts was banned shortly after I suggested this game was never actually going to come out for switch.
But stories like this are exactly why I stopped being a Nintendo only gamer.
How about they reveal the whole game and just sell that. I will even pay $120 if it is two games long.
Modern gaming is a dumpster fire.
This will be dead on the water by the time it comes to Switch, much like the 2016 game where it's dirt cheap everywhere else but £50 on here. I did buy it on Xbox and I fo fear for the Switch version based on that and the performance of other similar games. There's just a lot more going on and short of building a completely unique version of the game I can see it really struggling, unless they're waiting for Switch Pro of course 😉
I personally think this’ll be canned on the Switch, it’s been too long now and we haven’t seen anything. It’s a very complex game that even struggles on the PS4 Pro
I was excited and fully on board until they showed 2 Marauder's at the end. Seriously those guys are the worst, I'd buy DLC that patched them out of the game if I could. They're just not fun.
Still nothing for Switch owners...
They said recently that they would announce a releasedate soon, but still nothing. My suspicion is that they are all waiting for Nintendo's greenlight, they want to show it but they must wait for the Direct. Think of Bayonetta 3, No more heroes 3, Crash bandicoot 4, etc. Of course they may all go to Switch 2 (if it exists) but the situation stays the same: When Nintendo reveals the Switch 2 at a Direct we may finally see all those games (if they go to Switch 2).
Still no word on the Switch build... calling it now- it’s Vaporware at this point.
(tinfoil hat on) What if the delay is also because Doom Slayer is joining Smash and they want the reveal to coincide with the release of Doom Eternal?!
What we need is a Nintendo Partners Direct to give update on the Switch Version......oh there was one this week...... oh well, never mind
Doom Eternal on Switch getting canned is about as likely as Bayonetta 3 and Metroid Prime 4 getting canned.
Currently playing DOOM 64, surprised how fun it is, possibly my favourite DOOM and I have them all on Switch... bar Eternal of course. Really hoping to hear some news soon! #NintenDOOM me please Panic Button Games!
The optimist in me is hoping they give us a release date for Doom Eternal on Switch....2
Can you imagine it was delayed because they wanted to release it on the more powerful hardware? That would be fantastic.
Wow, that's great news for Xbox, PlayStation and PC owners...
Let me know when they announce they are going to sell the whole game.
Gaming is becoming a total crapfest.
@Rodan2000 it doesn't struggle on the base PS4, let alone the pro. What are you talking about? lol
I agree that the game has more than likely been canned on this version of the Switch. My guess is, it'll be available on the Switch pro early next year.
If they release it at all, the smart money will be on them to wait for the pro to drop. That's a big if, unfortunately the wait has likely killed the hype, similar to what happened to Dark Souls remastered, the sales for the game never actually picked up because the delay killed the hype and people moved on.
I will definitely get the Switch version day 1 if it comes with all DLC. No way would I now slap down full RRP day 1 for the base game this late when the console twins have got DLC already. Come on Panic Button and Bethesda. Sort this out please.
@Grumblevolcano Dark Souls Remastered on Switch ended up releasing so late that the other consoles got a 3 pack of the Dark Souls games on the same date.
@Razer Yeah by the time Eternal is on Switch it'll prob be between $20 and $40 on sale constantly.
@Razer what didn't help dark souls on Switch was also that it was sold as a remaster but technically didn't have any upgrade but a small resolution boost. It was basically the 360 version and it even had worse Audio and worst graphics in some places
Well my hype has just about all been killed and I don't even plan on getting either of the PSbox versions, unless it gets a nice lower than normal 'introductory' price(which it very likely -won't-) on Switch. Not only will the other versions be cheaper naturally, the new PSbox gen gets em for free, which halves the price even further than what they'll be by that point. Meanwhile we are probably gonna end up paying full price for a naturally lesser game. #lawd
It's a shame because I had this immediately on my radar as a Day 1 buy, even with the initial delay, but I'll have to seriously think about 'wasting' my money for a scraps version(yep, like others have said, it is kinda sketchy that we have not seen any footage).
Like before, $29 on sale already. And now all those people get a FREE Next Gen Upgrade. But lets keep waiting for a $60 Switch port 🙄
Sony released a PS4 PRO and there was no need to hold games from players for the launch. The theory that now New Switch games are waiting for a $399 pay wall is insane. Sony is not even doing this at year 7. Ps4 still getting tons of games on-time even with a PS5 launch.
@Razer there are definitely parts where it struggles with a constant frame rate especially during the grappling sections
This DLC better be included on the cart for the Switch version of Doom Eternal. For taking this long they had no reason not to include it.
How is this stuff still "Doom"?
Maybe they are waiting for the Switch Pro?
No Switch release date?
im sorry but none of these doom games after doom 64 can do it for me. theres nothing like the classics.
That looks like a big and titanic expansion coming up, looks incredible!
And, ahem... hopefully they give a small bonus for the Switch version for having to release so late.
We’ll be playing this on PS5 before the Switch ... sadly
The Ancient Gods is apparently standalone DLC so that may explain why Bethesda/iD feels no need to mention the Switch version of the base game.
Sad to see so much negativity towards the Switch version of this game. Can't have posts like "hope the Switch version is good" or similar posts, nah, it's all gotta be "game's gonna be cancelled" "it'll suck", "Switch version shouldn't exist because it's already out elsewhere" .
It's odd, people are always clamoring for new games on Switch, but do their best to tear em down when they do come. 🙄
@Casual_Gamer95 well it did have all the DLC available right out of the gate but yeah it was basically the 360 version.
I still enjoyed it to be fair, put 110 hours into my 3rd play through of the game.
They better release a ''Thank you for waiting special edition pack'' with extras like The Witcher 3 on Switch.
