If we're being completely honest, we never imagined that we'd still be writing about clever, creative uses of the Game Boy Camera in 2020, yet here we are with another fan-made project that has us mightily impressed.
Sam McKenzie, owner of a YouTube channel centred around 3D printing, decided to get in touch with us here at Nintendo Life to discuss the channel's latest video. In it, McKenzie uses a mod which allows you to attach a DSLR lens to the good old Game Boy Camera, resulting in some interesting snaps at a whopping 0.1 megapixels.
"Using a 70-200mm lens takes the focal length to around 3000mm on the Game Boy Camera," Sam says, "allowing us to take some creamy retro photos at an insane 0.1 megapixels. But, after blowing our budget on the 3D printer, we didn’t have enough to purchase a now rare Game Boy Printer, so we took the Game Boy Camera and brought it into 2020 by having the results printed onto canvas professionally."
The results are pretty special. At the end of the video, you'll see Sam's chosen photograph digitally printed onto a canvas, ready to be placed on a wall in the home. Perhaps it's the nostalgia talking, but we'd say it looks really cool - in a geeky, artsy kind of way, of course. Check it out:
What do you think? If you just so happen to have all of the necessary equipment and want to give this a go yourself, you can find the 3D mod design here.

When I played the video it only had audio. Maybe it's my crappy phone...
That's pretty cool.
Its still, honestly a mind blowing piece of technology considering what kind of power the Gameboy is working with.
Printing on canvas is still probably cheaper than acquiring a new GB Printer, though
How clever! If I had a giant lens like that and a 3D printer I'd definitely try that myself 😂
It reminds me of the guy who shot pictures of the Shanghai Grandprix using a Gameboy Camera with a Smartphone snap on lens. I think the result ist quite similar. More pictures not this DSLR Mod here would be nice.
so why would it need the big lens? pretty sure the original camera would have made exactly the same photo
How about just taking a photo with your phone and applying a filter?
I guess some people have a ton a free time now.
@6ch6ris6 Looks to me like the lens didn't actually work and he just got a standard photo printed...
This is kind of vague, the resolution will be the same, but fancy lens allow the photo to be... clearer?
If it's not accurate to the GB Camera's output it kinda defeats the point, no? You could just re-create it on some common image editing software.
Plus, there's always 3DS+mGBA for some authentic, easy to make/share GB photos. Highly recommend trying it out.
@6ch6ris6 it has depth of field that the gb camera could never create
Definitely not cool!
Well that’s 2 minutes of my life I’m never getting back
@superpotion do you really think you could see a big difference with such a low pixel count?
“Don’t worry guys we’ll be able to take vacation photos! I got my game boy here”
In all seriousness this is cool though!
@6ch6ris6 A larger focal length gives a narrower field of view.
@6ch6ris6 it might be negligible, but yeah there is definitely a difference. I don't think they were really aiming for practicality though
Gb printer aren't rare? Like 10 bucks, then another 8 for some thermal paper.
I spent 2 1/2 minutes to look at ONE photo...
