Unfortunately for big Phil he appears to be following the big N's Wii U launch strategy rather than the Switch launch strategy for the Series X.

The video game industry is far better with the big three players in it, it can only benefit the consumer.

I'd love to see more collabs between Nintendo, MS, and Sony - maybe even Valve too. Whether you prefer portly plumbers, wrathful demigods, or space soldiers, we can all get along at the end of the day.

@TheFullAndy I agree and it is really sad. Since the 360 MS has really relied on 3rd party and promotion of their games instead of creating their own brand. It is such a shame as the original X-Box was really exciting and varied with exclusives like Oddworld, Ninja Gaiden, Halo, Project Gotham, Blinx, Panzer Dragoon, Jet Set Radio etc. But they have really went down the generic gung-ho shootery style wity their machines since. I mean they could have a few million sales of XSX straight away by making Banjo Threeie or PD2, as the long time Nintendo fans woud be straight in their wallet. It just defies belief how they are marketing their new console. There is nothing really identifiable with their brand. Nintendo and Sony has tonnes of mascots and it really helps them with brand identity. Microsoft is sitting on many too but just does nothing with them. Characters like Master Chief and Marcus Fenix do not have mass market appeal and do not appeal to all age groups.

I really wanted MS to deliver some magic next gen but so far it is not looking promising.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps is an incredible game however. Best game they have made in years.

There is a real possibility they will be releasing a next gen console without any first party titles for the first 6 months, possibly longer, and that is a disgrace.

I am not as much a fan of Phil Spencer as others. I think he is just as clueless as Don Mattrick but in his defence maybe he is just following the direction of his more clueless overlords. Putting all their eggs in the Gamepass basket is not a good idea in my opinion.

All in all, Nintendo are simply the best in the gaming business.

Nintendo easily beats Sony too. Unlike Sony, Nintendo makes games in more genres than just third party action games.

All about selling Gamepass it seems but they may as well just go third party if that is the case because they are not offering any reasons to buy their consoles.

Also their first party offerings in both quality and quantity over the past decade has been awful especially in comparison to Nintendo and Sony.

I dunno, the Xbox 360 started so well but then Microsoft started chasing trends with motion controls, TV, and now subscription services whilst forgetting what makes a console great: the exclusive games.

I don't see Xbox consoles being a thing for much longer which sucks as competition is good.

A compliment to Nintendo for very appealing first party games was very nice.

But... Xbox still doesn't have a very strong 1st party game like Animal Crossing New Horizons.

@TheFullAndy Microsoft is clearly not interested in consoles anymore beyond their ability to bring people in their ecosystem and make them Gamepass/xCloud/XLG subscribers.

I don't think they will go 3rd-party. They'll turn their most profitable IPs into platform titles, starting with Halo Infinite, as they've already officially confirmed, followed by the next Fables and of course Forza. These games will go to Gamepass, among hundreds of others.

Having deep pockets Microsoft can subsidize Gamepass to the point where anyone on PC, mobile or Xbox (I doubt Sony will have them on their system), who is even remotely price sensitive - and who isn't at that these days? - will almost be forced to subscribe.

Once they have reached critical mass, and once they have priced any competition out of the market, they will begin making their money back: Expect slow but steady price hikes, and of course monetization becoming for prevalent and aggressive in their most popular platform titles like said Halo, Fables and Forza.

Business-wise it seem pretty smart to me. Similar approaches worked wonder for Music and TV/Movies already. That does not make it a given for games, which are still different beasts, but from what I hear, Microsoft is doing good work with xCloud for instance. I think they are on the right track as far as their longterm bottom line is concerend.

What choice to they really have? They have spend a decade proving that they cannot compete in terms of quality content, this is only once more reinforced by the delay of Halo now. Their studios are poorly managed, to the point of having to cancel three major titles last gen. The only possible exception being Turn10 and Playground Games, that have been consistent in quality and on time. The Coalition is also getting there in think. Other than that though ...

That said, I am not a fan of what they are doing as it will have a bunch of unpleasant longterm sideeffects on the industry. But it is what is, and ultimately it is up to consumers. I doubt most will be able to resist the value and convenience of Gamepass for long though, esp. once xCloud is widely available and running on Series X hardware, no longer capped by 720p streaming and such.

It's going to take to change the marketplace, but unfortunately, I think it is going to work in the end. It's worth noting though, that Mirosoft is going to great lengths here to make gaming more accessible than ever before. For that, they do need to commended.

It’s these kind of things that really make me want to buy an XBox series X as my second console, next to my switch . For the third party stuff, Fable and Halo.

I really like what Spencer is doing with the image of Microsoft and XBox. Being the friendly big guy out there.

I just don't see why they couldn't have pushed the Series X like Sony are pushing PS5 as proper next gen whislt also pushing Gamepass so they can get more consoles into peoples hands and into the Gamepass system.

As it stands Series X looks a bit doomed and, whilst Gamepass may get a lot more subscribers, as you say Microsoft's own content isn't great and personally I am not convinced Gamepass is sustainable. Not with regards to Microsoft but other game devs/publishers.

Once they start hearing "I will wait for it to arrive on Gamepass rather than buy it now" I think a lot of publishers may rethink the worth of a games subscription service and would Microsoft be happy to just keep throwing money at it in the hope it one day starts turning a profit?

I am not convinced.

Next gen will be interesting though.

For me, PS5 and Switch all the way.

The day Nintendo is no longer producing consoles (which hopefully is a long way off) the gaming industry will be a worse place for it.

@TheFullAndy Microsoft went after the audience Nintendo had captured with the Wii which was a good idea and a mistake. Kinect was actually a lot of fun, even if it didn't work quite as people imagined it and the Xbox 360 was actually a very good entertainment hub. I used mine to watch Sky TV as much as game. The adoption of Avatars and the games that used them like Crash Course and Motocross Mayhem were all a lot of fun.

But they also tried to shift their franchises over to a wider audience which ultimately failed. Fable 3 is a good example of how streamlining a franchise can turn off fans.

It wasn't all bad at the end though. Forza Horizon is still the best game in the series IMO and that was a 2012 360 title/

They seem to go after trends whilst not really understanding them which is why they keep making a mess of it. Like instead of realising the Kinnect craze was over they based their Xbox One launch around it.

Same seems to be happening with Gamepass, I don't think it is quite the draw they think it is. It isn't as simple as "Netflix for games".

I agree the Forza Horizon games, and traditional Forza games, now seem to be the flagship Xbox titles as they are consistenly great unlike Halo and Gears which have had some dubious sequels.

@TheFullAndy I've often thought there's really no reason to by a Microsoft console, and I think that's certainly becoming more true as the prices of new consoles start getting higher and gaming PCs become more affordable. The majority of their first party games hit PC anyway so why by an Xbox?

I had PS4 Pro, XBOX One X and Nintendo switch all with the top games for each, the experience of Nintendo Games is something unique and different in the best way. GamePass is amazing though, and is totally worth buying XBOX for it.

As a Nintendo fanboy, hats off to Phil! Glad to see someone indirectly speak out to the fact that the gaming industry in ninja fashion follows Nintendo's lead on hardware changes. Agree with most in that since I own a 4K gaming laptop, I do not see a economical reason to part ways with more money this Fall for a new Xbox.

I really like Phil Spencer and also the direction xBox is going. Their whole 'we don't care where you play, as long as it is in our eco-system' is really nice. They give a lot of options on how to play, instead of forcing you to buy the latest xBox. I'm always surprised when I hear people being mad at Microsoft because they don't have a reason to buy the Series X because they own a PC. Be glad instead.

Although they totally blew it with the xBox One, where it felt like they were not relying on exclusives while it's one of the most useful ways to attract buyers, I feel that they finally understand how important these are and are putting a lot of resources into the development of these. I think it will take a few years before we can reap the benefits of this though.

Why should I want Game Pass on Switch anyway?😕 AFAIK it's a sub with profile access to a bunch of XBox and PC games that require, well, an XBox or a PC. Even cloud streaming, itself an eternal compromise as compared to Switch's default functionality, is listed as just pending among its offerings. I'd rather take occasional ports of former exclusives like Cuphead, ones I can get and boot up and play more straightforwardly.

@TheFullAndy Yeah, I don't agree with your assessment about MS "going 3rd party" at all.

I've always gone for all three consoles, which during the 360/PS3 generation meant having two very similar consoles and the Wii. During the last gen, my Wii U and Switch gave me 1) respectively a lot of backwards compatibility benefits or a console/hybrid in one package and 2) Nintendo 1st party games. The Xbox One and PS4 were once again very similar.

But...things have really been shifting and when it comes to the PS5 and Xbox Series X, it's very easy for me to decide which one to get first.

Multiplatform games will most likely have their best showing on the Series X. I can play all of my Xbox One games, a lot of 360 games and even a selection of OG Xbox games. All of these with a better framerate, resolution, etc. I can play games on this console in the living room, then continue playing them on my cellphone or tablet wherever I please. Hell, I can even play multiplayer titles day one thanks to Xbox One controller support.

The PS5 will be basically what the Gamecube was back in the day: not the strongest console, hardly any unique features, not the best versions of multiplat games; for me it'll be a console I only buy for the exclusives, just like with Gamecube.

So yeah, if you combine the best specs (Sony's SSD will obviously not be of tremendous use for multiplat games), the backwards compatibility, xCloud, Game Pass, and the support for older hardware, I'd say there's a lot to like about Microsoft right now. Especially if the PS5 only supports PS4 backwards compatibility, doesn't support older hardware, has lesser specs, and doesn't have a similar service to Game Pass (with PS Now your cloud games have a different save file from you console games, for example).

Please, then put Halo: The Master Chief Collection and/or RareReplay on Switch, then.

Maybe I'm just too cynical, but I just assumed he was trying to distract attention from their ACTUAL competitor, who's kicking their ass.

I also generally go for all the consoles in a generation as well, I had the Xbox One at the start but sold it as it wasn't getting used. If Microsoft give me a compelling reason to buy the Series X (I mean good exclusives not slightly shinier third party games) then I will buy one.

@TheFullAndy Totally get that. The Game Pass approach really works for me right now, both money and time wise. If you're more into buying separate titles though (something I pretty much only do on my Switch these days), I can understand that the lack of attractive exclusives is a big turnoff for you.

@TheFullAndy Heck, even I, after my entire speech, am having doubts about getting the Series X day one. 90% of the games I can just play on my One X, so I'm not excluding the possibility of getting the Series X sometime in 2021, then the PS5 after its first serious pricedrop.

I don't really have any specific exclusives I'm dying to see announced, but a new Banjo, Conker, Blinx, Blue Dragon or Jade Empire would go a long way. ^^

@TheFullAndy kind of agree. I don't think I will get one at first not bc I don't see value, but bc I don't have a 4k TV. I think Gamepass looks really cool and the hardware is probably way more than I will ever need as far as performance. So I doubt Series X does much as far as sales. But I can see Gamepass being a success.

I am and always have been a big believer that it is the exclusives that make the consoles, it is why I have always been a Nintendo gamer and in the last decade I have moved away from Microsoft over to Sony as it became clear Sony's exclusives appealed to me more and Microsoft's exclusives dwindled in both quantity and quality.

I really hope with all the studios they purchased that Microsft can turn around their first party offerings but until they do I don't think I will be buying another Xbox.

There is talk the Xbox Series S will be announced this month which will be cheaper than Series X and focus on 1080p rather than 4K. That might be more suitable for you if you fancy Gamepass.

@TheFullAndy Yeah, I know! Very curious as to what its looks and specs will be like.

I really do buy Xbox consoles for their raw strength these days though: just recently I popped in Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts on my One X and was seriously blown away. Nintendo I buy for the hybrid nature of the Switch and obviously the 1st party content. PlayStation I buy for the exclusives, but that's it. Xbox though really is all about having access to the best versions of not just current gen games, but also my backlog. It feels amazing to play games that were plagued by framedrops and low dynamic resolutions in a stable 1080p/60 for example.

I'm not a graphics kind of guy, at all. Heck, I play more indies than anything else. But having older games accessible in a more stable form than anywhere else really helps the playability. Or at least helps the presentation, having gone from a 42" FHD to a 55" 4K TV. With Microsoft, I more and more know that my games library will travel with me through the generations and will adapt to bigger, sharper, better TV sets. That's of great value to me. Also the reason I have several CRT's for example; games ought to be played in the best possible way, and for retro games that's CRT, with 360/PS3 and onwards that's through upping the res and framerate. ^^

Another thing Microsoft is doing right now that I find awesome is that they are putting all first party titles on PC as well. Certainly not a great plan to sell consoles, but gives more people an opportunity to access their games. And Forza Horizon 4 is awesome in a triple monitor PC setup.

@TheFullAndy if you count PC, will there be exclusives? It doesn’t bother me too much bc I think you get so much value for just $15 a month. Plus, I can play all of my Xbox One games on it with faster loading times.

I am a console only gamer so don't really factor PC into the equation but yeah if someone is a PC gamer then a Xbox console is to all intents and purposes pointless.

Phil better put his money where his mouth is and hand over the rights to Rare's ip and a billion dollars to Nintendo.

I still frustrated from Xbox that still doesn't even have their 1st party like Nintendo have.
I'm waiting for casual / kiddie / family friendly games from Microsoft, their 1st party games for those audiences.
I never saw Microsoft ever make their Animal Crossing style games, Style Savvy games, Mii games style (Kinect was Microsoft first debut for their Mii games on Xbox), ARMS style games, Quirky style games like 1-2-Switch / Miitopia, etc.
Mention one 1st party Microsoft game that completely looks like Animal Crossing.
I don't think Microsoft have that game on Xbox machines.

Btw, i was intrigued by Xbox 360 E model recently as i have found that machine still available in my country Indonesia but i found the machine on the wrong time as right now i still focus on building Nintendo and Sony games. I do have some Xbox 360 games list on my paper but all those Xbox 360 games are 100% Exclusively for Xbox 360, not available on PS3 / Wii and they are majority Kinect games and Dancing games from Konami (DDR and Dance Evolution).

@RadioHedgeFund good post. I am the target customer for both Nintendo and MSFT. I love the nostalgia of Mario et al and then how they typically include gamers of all skill levels.

I like MSFT in that the Xbox One is an entertainment hub and an affordable gaming option. For now, I am fine with my original Xbox One, but I am definitely interested in what they have to offer.

@electrolite77 Well, for the forseeable future it is still the best way to get people unto Gamepass, so in that sense I agree. I am not really that sure that they will bother with rolling out a new "generation" in 2027'ish though. They might, it is not out of the question, but they might also not. Or it might be like a "developing world"-box or something along those lines, for regions where streaming is not an Option and PCs are uncommon

@TheFullAndy I'm personally most interested in PS5 as well, as I - at least these days - prefer Singleplayer games to multiplayer ones, and as far as narrative driven AAA sp-games go, nobody is currently at Sony's level as far as quality and quantity goes.

They could definitely have pushed Series X as hard or much harder even than Sony. We can't forget that Microsoft is one of very few trillion dollar companies on the planet
But that may also be the reason why they decided against pushing Series X as their mainplatform. Their big money maker these days is Azure. They figured - that would be my guess at least - that they were already big into cloud business, so why not use that experience, knowledge, trust and infrastructure for other ventures. Owning the Xbox brand combined with the fact that video- and musicstreaming are already super crowded, have been for years of course, gaming must have seemed like a logical choice.

The console business is a steady up and down and not exactly risk- or recession-proof. It also has literally physical limits whens it comes to producing, shipping and selling these boxes.

Streaming games to just about any device on the planet (eventually, it will also directly stream to your TV without any additional hardware involved besides a controller) makes for a virtually limitless market in the long run.

Also, you don't have to cut in the actual producer, the logistics companies, retailers and all that. Basically all revenue goes directly into their pocket.

As for 3rd-party, I think it will be the same as it is currently with TV: They won't have much of choice. They will obviously try and pull their games out, and try their own streaming platforms. People won't tolerate a dozen platforms though, esp. with some of them most likely not performing near the level of what a global megacooperation like Microsoft can offer, and will be forced to put their product where the customer is.

Granted, this is a ways off for the time being, and I am certainly not looking forward to that brave new world, even though it might be cheaper even and certainly more convient, but from a business perspective, I still think it makes ton of sense.

That said, nothing is certain, and games are the most fickle customers I know. The rules of the movie, tv or music business might not apply here. We shall see!

I don’t want Game Pass on Switch!

I've said it before, I'll say it again. I like Phil Spencer. He's comes across as genuine. Nintendo are the 'comedian's comedian.' The industry looks up to them.

Phils is a wonderful man. I respect him ever since one of his first E3 appearances when he took the time to say good luck (or something like) that to all of the other companies when starting the MS conference. That simple gesture, followed by all the good decisions in turning Xbox back into a platform worthy to have and arguably the most consumer friendly to date.

@neogyo What a stuck-up thing to say. If Game Pass came to Switch it wouldn't affect you whatsoever. You could easily ignore it. What reasoning do you have for not wanting it on the Switch? I'm not interested in why you don't want it for yourself, I probably wouldn't get it either, but why don't you want ANYONE to have it?

I disagree on the hardware side. Switch is just a tablet, and pretty much all of the games could be played on better hardware.

I would like to see Nintendo put their games on PC at least.

@Ventilator I kind of agree. My PS4 has been broken for two years and I haven't really missed it (ok MGS5 and Death Stranding aside).
My Switch got stolen and I replaced it within months.

@TheFullAndy I don’t think Game pass gets as many subscribers as you think. I know a lot of people, myself included who don’t even pay for their game pass subscription because their game sharing partner has it, so they have it as well. Also with game sharing, I NEVER pay full price for any game, whether it’s retail at launch or already deep discounted on the store. If my game sharing partner has a similar interest in it which 95% of the time he does, we split it via PayPal or Venmo.

Nintendo may have the Switch tax but at least they make their partners money... I don’t see how Xbox is doing any of their devs any favors financially, when I practically always have a library of +- 120 games installed for next to no money.

Be kiddie, be Kawaii, be silly, be something not too Western. Just made it for Japanese / Asian audiences.
I think Microsoft still have attitude "too cool to be kiddie and silly" for their 1st party games.

I can only see it being an absolute trainwreck of a launch, but at the same time, my Day One Xbox One is in dire need of updating, so I might shell out the dough for it, good or bad.

Gotta agree there in the past but as of late with Switch it seems they have forgotten this formula. Were getting tons of indie title phone games some good some not so good. Its nice to have the huge library but the epic nintendo games kind of stopped after the switch first year. Seems like the ball has dropped.

You are overthinking it. Nintendo and Playstation teams are both Japanese developers. They are the antithesis of each other. At different points either of them has controlled the Japanese market. The Nintendo difference is due to a few of the leaders they've had. Iwata/Miyamoto being the two biggest influences. With Iwata gone and Miyamoto in his later stages we could see a very different Nintendo in 5-10 years.

It's also pretty ignorant to think that Western cultures never invent cute things. So why don't we knock off the ridiculous stereotypes, eh?

Between Japanese and Western players have their strong game genre that might be a niche for other player.
For example, Otome games are very popular for girl gamers on Japan and Asia region but it was very niche to Western peoples. Western peoples might think Otome games was a stupid game with just only 2D pictures, choices and wall of texts. Same as Japanese players to see what mostly Western players played are a niche game for Japanese players. Some Japanese players do not like too Western style games.
And about Animal Crossing, i wonder if Western peoples still have stigma or stereotype of Chibi looking proportion and a very super duper cute Chibi looking characters as some of Western peoples think Chibi looking was too kiddie, too baby looking, not cool. I heard Western peoples prefer realistic proportion rather than Chibi proportion looking so i guess Microsoft was still never make a very super duper cute game for casual gamers due to stereotype of being Western peoples that still thinking Chibi looking was not represent their taste as Western peoples.

That's hard to read and understand. It appears you are trying to rephrase this into a Nintendo=Japanese Culture vs. Microsoft =American culture. That argument just isn't worth my time. Microsoft is a good developer but they are very limited with their development capability and haven't been in the game as long as Nintendo. So what they have or haven't done isn't going to necessarily represent American Culture. Microsoft is also focused on a wider gamut of games for everyone while Nintendo focuses on a more narrow games for families.

Yes. The company Disney exists. They specialize in cute and often do it much better than Nintendo. So many different worlds and franchises they've created. It's the American version of Nintendo. The difference is their focal point has been on movies and theme parks while Nintendo's have been in video games. Not to say the two haven't overlapped. There have been many games based on the Disney franchises and Nintendo is going into legos and working on getting into theme parks. It's just ignorant to think that if Microsoft hasn't done it than Americans can't do it.

@HammerKirby Switch have third person games, but most are different genres. PS4 ones is mainly Action RPG or Action.
PS4 did at least get "Dreams" in 2020. I bought Dreams, but haven't used it much yet.

@Bret + @RPGamer sometimes you just say things as an absolute that can come off entitled or ignorant and that’s how that came off so there it is. All of this is personal opinion conjecture mind you, and feelings change.

That said, why I don’t like the idea of it coming to Switch is bc I personally don’t feel that Microsoft’s game library fits with Nintendo. I don’t like it. I don’t see how it makes sense. Though admittedly more and more these genres and types of games are being dropped on Switch with way less quality than Xbox first party titles, so there’s no avoiding the ultra violence, same ol same bs these days. That said , I also just think it’d be better all around for competition and such to have them keep doing their own thing. Anddd I’m resistant to subscription services. So there’s some of my personal reasons for not wanting game pass on switch. I’m not gonna stop anyone else from wanting it.

What i've learned and concluded about nintendo, is that they are the think-tank of the industry.
The true leaders who shape the way we are gaming. Not the most powerfull hardware, just the most powerfull ideas.

Humble, silent, without a bad word about the competitors, they come out of their batcave and all of a sudden strike back with a brilliant idea, wich ofcourse will be copied later on, and silently and still not complaining, they start to think about new ideas.
