UK chart data is now in for the week ending 18th July, revealing that Switch newcomer Paper Mario: The Origami King couldn't quite manage a top of the table debut.
The game jumps into second place in its first week on sale, with new PS4 exclusive Ghost of Tsushima taking the number one spot. Animal Crossing: New Horizons continues to perform well in fourth place.
There aren't any other new titles to talk about this week, although Nintendo will no doubt be happy in the knowledge that five of the top ten are Switch exclusives.
Here's a look at this week's top ten all formats chart:
Last Week | This Week | Title |

Got both this and ghost of tushima and I think ghost of tushima deserves the top spot but it was close, best paper mario so far in my opinion
Digital sales for Paper Mario are not counted though.
And, my favorite game, ACNH is still doing great months after launch. Tom Nook must have a pretty large pile of bells . . . .
It might not have made #1 but sales were very strong. Here's some context from GamesIndustry.biz:
The comedy adventure game still reached No.2, and its first week sales are bigger than the launch of the last two Paper Mario games combined (2016's Paper Mario: Color Splash on Wii U and 2012's Paper Mario: Sticker Star on 3DS). In fact, its first week sales narrowly beat 2007's Super Paper Mario, making this new game the fastest-selling Paper Mario so far. In addition, download sales are not included (Super Paper Mario was not available digitally) and therefore the Switch game is likely to have been comfortably bigger than its Wii predecessor.
@TrumpsHand
This is the physical retail top 10. No digital sales included for any games.
@TrumpsHand Neither were digital sales for Ghost of Tsushima, or any other game.
Another great week for Nintendo.
I never thought Luigi's Mansion 3 would be hanging around the top 10 nine months later. It will probably get a boost when Halloween rolls around too!
Mario Kart 8D continues to be a beast.
Just a quick question: How can I post a minor spoiler here? Sometimes I see a post, where some words/sentences have a block bar on them and you have to click on it, to see the text.
The Origami King is the fastest-selling Paper Mario game in the UK through retail sales alone.
@Mr Blacky - use [ spoiler ] write text here [ /spoiler ] but remove the spaces inside the brackets.
I'm glad Paper Mario made its best debut yet. Origami King looks like a fantastic game.
Of course it couldn't beat Ghost of Tsushima, though... A lot of people were eagerly waiting for that game. It was a pretty strong week this one.
@TrumpsHand Digital sales of the others aren't counted either.
@KoopaTheQuick The game isn't flawed nor generic. True, they are all toads. But most of them are very unique and funny.
I'm loving Ghost of Tsushima deserves the top spot
@KoopaTheQuick
Must have been bought by all the chavs amiright.
Ugh wish I had a PS4 for this. Tsushima looks incredible.
I must say tho, origami king is excellent so far, and I had my doubts. Some folks are sticking to their guns that it's trash, but so much of the initial criticism is being walked back. Basically the exact thing that happened with wind waker
@KoopaTheQuick You clearly have not played the game. You are obviously a common victim of internet moaning.
I wish they could get digital sales numbers. These are entirely useless - especially now during the pandemic.
I'm not surprised though. Ghost is a remarkable new IP that is in the running for my game of the year. I'm loving it
@Cosats
Any game he doesn't like that sells well has been bought by chavs apparently based on past comments.
@KoopaTheQuick but you have not played it right?
Reviews didn't help, and to many Nintendo gamers are still playing Animal Crossing, I guess.
Why is MK on the list?
@Alienfreaks04 because it's a list of best selling games?
@zool
It is the biggest launch for a Paper Mario game in the UK. Just because it came second doesn't mean it didn't sell well especially considering it was only announced two months ago competing against a game that has been hyped for over two years on a system with a much larger userbase.
There is no negative way to spin the games UK debut.
@Rob3008 Thanks for the information, it's certainly sold well...
@TheFullAndy facts aren't negative. Many reviews were less than positive and many gamers I guess, are still playing AC. That's not to say that Paper Mario is not on their list, just that they haven't bought it yet.
And sales figures are not the topic, coming second place was.
@zool
Rubbish. You are trying to put a negative slant on a game which just had the biggest UK launch of any game in its series.
The game will likely go on to sell 4 or 5 million. That is positive.
Also who looks at a sales chart and doesn't analyse it beyond where a game was placed on it?! Context is everything.
@KoopaTheQuick of course the opinion of someone that hasn't played the game is more important than those who have played it, and say it's a great game.
Honestly, forget about TTYD, Nintendo won't do a game like that again. But that doesn't mean this new entry is crap, it's just different. And also brilliant in its own way.
I wish they did at least a remaster of TTYD, though. It was really amazing.
@KoopaTheQuick I went into Origami King expecting it to be another color splash, but while it may not be an RPG, as a puzzle adventure game, it's the best Paper Mario game I've played for so long that it doesn't matter that it's not Thousand Year Door.
@zool actually most of the reviews were pretty positive
@TheFullAndy you mentioned the word negative. I just responded to the topic saying that Paper Mario did not make it to the number one spot.
You should respond to what I said and not what you think I said.
I'm playing the game and so far it's ok, to early to say more that that, and yes it could sell millions of copies, but it did not sell enough so far to take the number one spot....... Which this topic is referring to.
@zool
But it still had a very good launch, best ever in the UK for the series, which is the important thing.
Do you lack the ability to understand this?
There's no shame losing to a game as high a quality as Ghost of Tsushima, especially given its available to a console with a large user base.
@Alienfreaks04 A person buys a Switch. They buy MK8. Lots of people are still buying Switch consoles so lots of people buy MK8. That's why.
Not surprised. I did the same and bought Ghost of Tsushima first. It is a fantastic game. Always great to see a new IP Start off well.
Paper Mario is coming next week as a rental.
Ghost of Tsushima sold 4X the amount of Origami King. So a big gap between #1 and everything else on that list
@TheFullAndy I understand completely, and I haven't disagreed with that. But this discussion is about Paper Mario only reaching position 2.
I did not write the headlines, I just commented on them. You have changed the direction of the topic, to the game having a good launch. And even with the good launch it reached number 2, which is fine with me. But whoever wrote this post, wrote it with an element of disappointment.
My point which you don't seem to understand, is, that a score of 8 for a game is not necessary a rush out and buy on week one score. And since many Animal crossing gamers are busy on their island and not looking to spend another fifty quid at the moment.
@zool
You think 8 out of 10 is a bad score?! And when the game has sold more at UK launch than any other in the series you think it is because of "bad" reviews and people playing another game?! "Bad" reviews made it sell more than previous entries at launch?!
OK I think I am done with this conversation.
And now come the people trying to convince us that Paper Mario "flopped" because it didn't sell quite as well as the hot, new Sony IP in a market where Nintendo's typically at its weakest.
@TheFullAndy I was done after your second comment, but I thought I would explain again as I thought you weren't getting it. But I now realise that you realise you made a mistake with your first comment and the rest of your comments were just smoke and mirrors to hide your mistake. Sussed 😁
@zool
No you have just proven you haven't got a clue.
That Ghost of Thushima game is the sole reason for me to miss my PS4 right now! Looks absolutely stunning!
@TheFullAndy
"Ghost of Tsushima vs Paper Mario" is nothing more than console warrior garbage. The two games aren't remotely similar in any way outside of being platform exclusives.
@westman98
I agree. Don't think anyone could realistically expect Paper Mario to outsell Ghost considering people have been waiting near 3 years for the Sony game and Nintendo's game was revealed in May.
And it doesn't take away from the fact Paper Mario has still done very well at launch no matter what narrative @Zool and the like try to spin.
@TheFullAndy
Exactly this.
Outside of Mario Kart and three of the Mario Party games (8, DS, and Super), Mario spin-offs always sell between 1 to 5 million copies worldwide. Paper Mario The Origami King looks to sell in the high end of that range or possibly even a bit more, but it's still no juggernaut like Super Mario Party or Mario Kart 8 DX.
Ghost of Tsushima itself had a very big UK launch - it's retail launch is only a few thousand copies behind that of Super Mario Odyssey, which is the fastest-selling Mario platformer ever and the 2nd fastest-selling Mario game (behind Mario Kart Wii) in the UK.
@TheFullAndy ‘There is no negative way to spin the games UK debut.‘ I don’t know, I’m sure Agramonte could do it 🤣
@AmplifyMJ
Oh he has already had a crack at it! 😂
@TheFullAndy @AmplifyMJ Oh yeah if Ghost of Tsushima gets to number 1 in Japan (which I think has a very good chance of happening), can you imagine the level of smugness and xenophobia that's going to emanate...
@WiltonRoots
It would be unfair to have Nintendo dominate practically every week in Japan! They can have this one, which as you say there is a good chance of getting but it will be much closer I reckon.
Been playing paper mario, the game is good so far except for the dumb puzzle battle system. I just want to jump and whack enemies not solve a Rubik's cube every time i run into an enemy
