If you're missing Metroid, perhaps this video will help pass the time until Metroid Prime 4 is released.
A YouTube Channel by the name of MK (as spotted by Zelda Dungeon) has showcased a "work in progress" by the modder Yainskofso that transforms The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild into a Metroid-themed mod.
Here's a description of what's included:
A full mod of metroid for botw, including models, outfits, sound effects and BGM's
This video is just for showcasing. There is some missing outfits but the project is still a work in progress by Yainskofso
Some of the highlights include Samus' gunship, which replaces Link's Master Cycle, and the inclusion of her Zero Suit outfit. The paraglider has even been swapped out for a baby Metroid. How appropriate.
Does this make you want to play Zelda or Metroid? Tell us down below.

It's incredible to think about how much time and effort these people spend to make these mods. Quite impressive!
Some scenes in this video make me think that an open world game would be a very good fit for the Metroid series. After all, a lot of the mechanics in Zelda games are similar to Metroid's (accessing new areas with a newly acquired artefact to name just one).
Metroid is best in isolated claustrophobic alien labyrinths imo.
Howww, it even looks cool!
I would love an open world game going back to samus her origins, her training with the chozo (if i wrote it right)
"This game is modded to the way I want another game to be, Nintendo needs to consider high employment of said modder!"
Am I doing comments right?
Is it me or does Samus's body look weirdly disproportionate in this mod? Still impressive mod though.
If Breath of the Wild allowed mods like this legitimately, I'd buy the game right now.
@echoplex Metroid prime becomes an open world item hunt after a while
I didn’t expect it to be this amazing! I love that she uses a Metroid glide that is awesome!
Very impressive. I am becoming a big fan of fan game mods on older systems some from hacks are so impressive these days and even more so when they are running on the real hardware as opposed to emulators. I would love to see a game like botw get a total conversion at some point but feel that would take a long time to pull off as it already takes years to do that for N64 Zelda fan mods.
@echoplex
Yes, i was thinking the same, a huge Alien Planet with tons of underground Labyrinths you can explore in the classic Metroid formula, and you use your ship to travel greater distances on the overworld.
Occasionally Ridley attacks you on the overworld ect.
I cann see this as a great new twist on the metroid formula.
Now if only consoles would support mods officially. PC games are absolutely the better for it.
@Eel i know what you mean, but the maps in the Metroid prime games, as much as I adore them, feel somehow disjointed with all the doors and endless elevators.
Very nicely done. I'd play the heck out of this, although I agree Metroid is best done in subterranean, dark environments.
But that Samus is looking mighty fine...
I like how well this fits with the art style; a little more polish and I could probably be convinced that this was a scrapped DLC idea. Makes me wish Nintendo went for this sort of thing more often.
I'd like to imagine Nintendo has been paying enough attention to Western gaming tastes to do an open-planet Metroid in the vein of No Man's Sky/Starlink set in one star system where you can take off and land on different planets and they have whole surfaces that are explorable. The Metroidvania part would be each planet having loads of areas and dungeons you cannot access without upgrades from other worlds.
this is the coolest thing from 2020, all i can say is wow. looking forward to another run through of botw. WOW
Mods are disrespectful and, especially for Nintendo Switch games, illegal too. It's like adding emojis on a famous painting.
For anyone wondering, this is the Wii U version, running on PC via Cemu emulator.
Where’s the Birthday Suit? Seems like the modder was angling in that direction.
@brunojenso Yeah, not sure exactly what's off. Thighs are big, and she looks kind of short. Don't know much about modding, but I imagine it has something to do with Link's OG model.
This is still impressive.
@Cosats Eh not really.
It's like putting a "famous painting" in photoshop, and just fooling around with it. Doesn't hurt anything.
@echoplex Isn’t Metroid open world? With all the sequence breaking you can do, it never felt linear at all.
@Cosats lol
@RadioHedgeFund I’m not sure I would like that. For me, the beauty of Metroid games (at least the earlier ones up to and including Prime) is that they felt very dense, with lots of secrets. Quality of quantity.
Most open world games are stunningly beautiful but have a feeling of emptiness, hence why people tease that games like Breath of the Wild or Skyrim are “walking simulators.”
@nessisonett Right? One reason I still play Skyrim on PC is for all the amazing mod support. Some of those creators do mind-blowing things!
@RadioHedgeFund
I love that idea and think it would work brilliantly. I like the idea of being able to switch between actually piloting your ship around or just using it for fast travel (with maybe the occasional interruption if you're attacked en-route).
@LUIGITORNADO
Nothing wrong with big thighs.
@LUIGITORNADO Eh not really.
You are confusing using photoshop in your spare time, at your home, for your own pleasure, with theft and illegal practices.
Modding is illegal when it is not officially permited. How hard is this to understand as a rule?
@Cosats
Modding isn't illegal, regardless of what the EULA may say. They aren't legally enforceable in Europe anyway and the First Sale Doctrine in the US knocks it on the head there too. What is illegal is selling mods for money (because you're deriving profits from somebody else's creation). If you host your mod on a platform that takes money from advertising then you're legally liable to takedown requests but other than that it's not illegal.
It's also not immoral. It's an additive action, increasing people's chance to enjoy the game if different ways. If the person in question in the article was selling his mod to people I'd agree with you that it shouldn't be allowed, and legally it wouldn't be. But altering the software and putting those alterations online for free isn't illegal in most of the world.
@Cosats Modders like this are hobbyists. That's all. They often have an interest in game development and are fans just like everyone else. It brings them and others joy, and it's not hurting anyone.
He isn't selling it either.
God I hope Metroid 4 is as open as BOTW. There’s no reason it couldn’t be either.
The cel shaded gunship is really nice! The model is a little suspicious, but I'm sure there are limits to make it work with Link's rig?
Impressive work anyway, if they made a video in proper 3D software I'd be really interested
Some of the effort and skill in these mods is better exposure than a resume/job application. Hope they get a job out of this level of work.
A dream of mine is for them to make a Switch Workshop ala the Steam Workshop to make it easier to download mods. That is extremely unlikely though.
@Cosats Also, this mod is actually running on Wii U most likely, that's where the BotW modding scene mainly is, not on Switch.
Let´s hope Nintendo notice we REALLY need Metroid on Switch XD
@Cosats Seeing as you are so familiar with the law, you mind pulling it up? Are there any relevant court cases where a modder was found guilty and fined or jailed?
Uh oh I hear the Nintendo Gestapo coming to ruin anything fun that's fan made. Too bad they couldn't stop Metroid AM2R, Pokemon Prism, Newer SMB Wii, Project M Smash Brawl...
@Cosats "Mods are disrespectful". Sounds like a personal problem there, buddy.
Here come the takedown demands.
@DrDaisy You've never played it??
@Cosats hard eyeroll
@Aurumonado I think a game that melds the best of both worlds could be done
@tseliot I've played it. It's okay, but I got sick of Link after The Wind Waker.
I would love a 3rd person open world metroid. Also a Metroid/Zelda crossover or expansion or DLC for BOTW2. While it is not a popular opinion- I loved Other M.
@brunojenso jep, because Link is the same height. They had to work with the short length of Link and the position of his hands, feet, and head, to avoid too much clipping.
@SortingHat it’s the motorcycle it’s replacing
@SortingHat dude. Stop going all political here.
One question remains: What‘s the use of a spaceship/gunship that can‘t actually fly?
Everytime when I see Breath of the wild my heart stops: Sequel footage, new information?! Ah well, I should be patient.
This looks and sounds prety cool though. Samus proportions are wrong though, but that just because of the game.
Maybe if these people stopped hacking the Switch, then those 'stability' updates would turn into folders or other interesting things!
@brunojenso Most likely to fit Link's model
@SortingHat I haven't seen either and now I need to do everything I can to find it
They better have got permission to use all that sweet sweet Harmony of Hunters music.
