Well, this is a surprise. Square Enix has updated the Switch version of its 1997 role-playing game Final Fantasy VII. It fixes a few issues that players have been encountering.
Here are the full patch notes for version 1.0.2, courtesy of Perfectly-Nintendo:
- Fixed a progression stopper under certain conditions.
- Fixed an issue with a Save Crystal.
The update before this (version 1.0.1) was released in May last year and fixed an annoying music bug that was somehow reintroduced in the latest release.
While this latest update isn't much, it's still nice to see Square Enix supporting a classic like this with minor patches. Have you updated your own copy of FFVII on the Switch yet? Noticed anything else? Leave a comment down below.

Essential bug fixes are always appreciated.
It's a shame they didn't do anything to enhance the graphical fidelity of the backgrounds. They only used bilinear filtering on the low-resolution pre-rendered backgrounds, where there exist unofficial mods for the Steam version that use ESRGAN AI upscaling to greatly increase the detail and visual fidelity of the pre-rendered assets.
@RupeeClock there not gonna do anything like that, the game is a quick cash grab for the Nintendo audience. Have you seen what they did with the steam releases of v and vi. Just be lucky you got an unaltered version.
@Fido007
Yeah, I've seen what Square Enix usually does to their retro releases, they do really poor jobs of redrawing vintage graphics or UI design. Like, unacceptably poor.
Which is pretty much why I'm only asking them to embrace ESRGAN as a solution to enhancing graphical fidelity. The mods for FF VII and FF IX prove how much better they look, making them suited to HD systems.
@RupeeClock I'd rather they actually put in time and effort into their games, like trails of mana. I agree that they need to update the graphics and having these mods should be a good motivator on what can be done, however ultimately it's nothing more then a fantasy for a company to continue to update and change their products towards the current hardware, there is no incentive.
Unless... they finally decide to release DLC for their retro projects (or any that I'm aware of) however that opens up a new can of worms.
It's actually rather amazing how much attention has been given to the Switch version of this port compared to the others. As far as I'm aware, NONE of the fixes the Switch version got were done to any other, including the music one, which was definitely the biggest complaint I'd seen around.
Unless you care about achievements (which is admittedly a big deal for some), this has kinda become the go-to console for this game if the Switch is an option for you.
@RupeeClock I wonder what happened to Square, as I grew up seeing every release they made being an example of top quality gaming...until FF7 and its bugs alongside translation issues.
@Fido007 I heard they DID do retro DLC to one of the SNES Romancing SaGa games (only in Japan, you might guess. I think it was on Wii U people said).
Sad thing is I heard RS1 on the Super Famicom had clear signs of an unfinished game (did not have all the monsters and/or gems promised by the intro), and only some of that was restored in the WonderSwan Color version a decade later.
Will this work with the FFVII&FFVIII Remastered physical version?
@RupeeClock It is Square Enix, they always do minimum to get maximum. That's why I hate Square Enix so much.
Need more info!!! Which game stopping glitch(Ed) have they fixed?!? Will it rescue an already-borked save file?!? Can I actually finish the game now without having to completely restart?!?
@LowRyder I don't know about PS4, but I'm pretty sure the Xbox One version is basically equivalent in every way.
@gaga64 The only glitch regarding the save crystal I've ever heard of in FFVII is that the game had a small chance of preventing you from leaving the final cavern if you set it down in a specific room (the one where the party splits up). So most likely it's that, but there might be something else, I don't know 100%
@Borngis Oh is it? Maybe the Switch version just got some of the updates first then or something. That said I don't really keep up with xbox news.
@KayFiOS it does
Hmm, no mention of it fixing the random lock ups that occasionally occur. It's only happened twice for me and thankfully it wasn't far from a recent save but I'd be annoyed to lose a lot of level grinding in North Cave to a lockup.
As long as they don’t fix the Mystile glitch, I’m happy
@Fido007 @RupeeClock
Me, as a Kingdom Hearts fan:
@LowRyder I‘m hoping for a fix for the “Diamond Weapon” glitch (where if you save the game just before that boss battle, then load the save, the boss won’t appear, meaning no battle, so no post-battle cut-scene to unlock the Northern Cave, meaning the game can’t be finished).
26 hours into the game and I break it completely just by trying to be sensible and saving my game before a major boss battle.
@gaga64 I was actually not aware of that one. It sounds like a fairly realistic one to happen without trying as well.
Good to see they're still ironing these games out, definitely makes it more likely that I'll purchase them later on down the line.
@LowRyder I just checked, and at the very least my save file’s still blorked. The bug may be fixed, but the damage is already done.
Currently playing through FF1 (dawn of souls) on my GBA micro. One day I will get through a FF game without being bored to death and hopefully by then FF vii will be all patched up and ready for me haha.
Kidding I have decided to give them a good go, my main experiences with FF were VIII (awful from what I remember at the time), XIII (dullest next gen game I ever played on PS3) and Crisis core (good but other games caught my attention and I stopped playing). So I am going to put that aside and start again. So far FF 1 is like a free to play grind fest, but I am enjoying drawing a map along with it for that nostalgic 80s feel. Forgot how awesome the GBA micro was, would love a premium Nintendo console.
Shame all these retro games don't have low-res options. I'd much prefer to play this at a 480p resolution (in hand-held mode) than having high res models, bilinear blurred backgrounds, and low resolution textures.
The new classic Doom patch runs at a lower res on Switch and it's all the better for it. It runs at a higher res on PS4 and it's terrible there. Even though the game went for £2 in a sale recently I opted against it because it's worse than the Switch version for that reason.
I've emailed and spoke to so many friends that make these games, but often they're under control of a publisher that goes against almost all their creative wishes and inputs. Even though in the past I've had meetings with high ups at publishers and the like I've always hated that character trait that makes someone the CEO of a mega-company. They're always odious and I always end up hating them. Even bosses of regular companies sometimes have it and yuck no. One day I'll put the brain processor power into finding out what exact traits those are because right now it's just an indescribable but certainly present 'gut feeling'. And I'm happier putting my brain to use on things more important to me. Also BLM. What a ***** shame racism is on the rise again. I recall my misspent uni days where we'd go round kicking in neo nazis that dared to enter our city. I wasn't a neonazi hating punk, but I was a a neonazi hater so I hung out with them when the chance arose. (just saying this as it's in the news again. Trump never complains about white nationalists even though right wing terrorism is the most-killing extremist group in the US right now. I wonder why he won't call them out, yet calls out literally everyone else. I kinda hope it escalates because I yearn for a return to WW2 when it was legal to kill nazis)
@FargusPelagius play Final Fantasy I: Anniversary Edition on PSP or emulated if you can. Far superior.
@Severian may be it was because of Nintendo seal of quality and 3d doesn't help with bugs but for the translation I 've got nothing except may be they didn't want to paid too much for it.
Does this mean on my next playthrough I won't have to waste an hour or more trying to get past that damn lightening/wind wall thing? This stuff should have been fixed before the release.
I already have it for the PS4, but I do hope they will be able to bring Final Fantasy VII Remake to the Switch as well. I would love to play it on the go.
@SmartNickname cheers for the suggestion, unfortunately I already had Dawn of souls so started with that ( I never played it back when I got it). I am not sure which version of FF III and IV to get. I still have my DS and 3DS but also have a Shield so can get the Android versions. V I will also need. VI I have on virtual console and SNES mini, got about half way. Much preferred Secret of mana from Squaresofts 90s games (completed many a time).
Edit: just realised my Shield can emulate the PSP game so may have a gander for it. Thanks.
@FargusPelagius in short, my suggestions are:
FF III: play the 3D version. DS or PSP.
FF IV: The complete collection, on PSP or PS Vita (via PS Store)
FF V Advance (emulated with unofficial patches)
FF VI Advance (same as above)
You can find thousands of articles and threads on the internet of people discussing about the best versions of these games, by the way.
@SmartNickname thank you kindly for saving me the time. Much appreciated.
@LowRyder actually, the PS4 ver music bug were fixed last year. Make sense since the attention the system have with FF7R and how overall its the best selling one for FF games.
@AJDarkstar @Sakaixx Apparently so! Well that's great to hear. Felt pretty bad for those with the other ports...
@LowRyder yeah for FF square always fix the PS versions first. I think they already solved FF9 music a year ago as well and an update for parity for FF12 with other later consoles portrecently. FF tends to sold best on PS for obvious reasons but it would be nice if square could harmonize the updates.
Our glitch bug is still intact right? For nostalgia reasons...
I wish FF7 Remake was for Nintendo Switch hopefully Nintendo is creating a new Nintendo Switch Pro so we can get the games we want
I have FF VII on Switch. I really should play that game again, was quite a bit of fun. Maybe someday.
@AJDarkstar bugs on PS4 already fixed a year ago.
@AJDarkstar I mean I'm with ya for the most part. I was still under the impression that they hadn't, so that shows what faith I have in them when it comes to these old ports. The fact that they fixed any version at all was kind of a shock.
@AJDarkstar they solved the PS4 ver first then moved to other consoles is the main point. They also solved the music bug on that system which apparently not included in the switch/xb update.
Cool, I will update. I'm at the final boss.
Oh. I was wondering what that was? Thanks.
