After an insider tip last week, LEGO has officially announced its Super Mario line will launch on 1st August. This will include the Mario Starter Course (59.99 USD/EUR), the Piranha Plant Power Slide Expansion Set (29.99 USD/EUR), and the Bowser's Castle Boss Battle Expansion Set (99.99 USD/EUR).
According to the official PR, you can now pre-order the LEGO Super Mario Adventures Mario Starter Course on the company's website and from select retailers around the world. Note: pre-orders don't appear to be live yet.
fans will be able to begin exploring the fun-packed LEGO Super Mario universe with the Adventures with Mario Starter Course. This entry point set to the world of LEGO Super Mario is needed to unlock expansion sets and features seven action bricks for different interactions with the LEGO Mario figure that are only included in this set.
The LEGO Mario figure itself has LCD screens in his eyes, mouth and belly to display a wide variety of instant reactions to movement, color and action bricks. Also included is a speaker that plays iconic sounds and music from the video game series.

The starter course can be combined with the LEGO Super Mario Expansion Sets. Each of these unlocks "unique challenges" and characters to play with and against friends. As all of these are modular builds, fans can create the LEGO level course they want.
There'll also be a special LEGO Super Mario mobile app released by the LEGO Group. This is a supporting feature to keep track of scores, encourage rebuilding, provide digital instructions and suggest other creative ways to build and play.

Will you be purchasing the starter set and any of these expansions? Leave a comment down below.

I just need Lego Luigi and I'm all in
I really love this. Though they seem a bit pricey, in comparison to the other Lego sets being sold today they are actually FAR cheaper than I thought they'd be.
@Doofenshmirtz I imagine if these sell well, they'll make more sets featuring more playable characters. I DEFINITELY see a Boo House set being released with an LCD Luigi.
These sets are definitely growing on me. I just wish they had classic minifigs for the Mario characters.
@WreckitRyan The character designs remind me heavily of Paper Craft figures, which might have been intentional. Which at first was a bit jarring, but now the designs have really grown on me.
I think I'll get the Castle and starter sets.
Could've been cheaper I think but still reasonably priced IMO. I might get the expansions much later though. That Bowser's Castle look sick!
@WreckitRyan That's exactly my issue with them too. These big bulky figures just look wrong. If they went the classic route we could combine them with other sets too. Who doesn't want to see Mario in the pilot seat of an X-Wing parked at Hogwarts while Luigi and Batman play cops and robbers with Bowswer and Thanos in a city you built that includes all of that and takes your entire basement!?
Or maybe that's just me...
This is cool but wake me up when they make LoZ sets. Then I'll throw all money at them.
The reveal trailer for these was really cool, and everyone seemed to hate them immediately. Glad to see the comments are more positive now.
Cute, if I were still a kid, I would pester my parents to get me this set.
Lego was big when I was a kid, not sure about today, but they missed that market.
Remember when Nintendo said their my Nintendo rewards program would be tied to this sorta thing? 😔
@patbacknitro18 Pricey, LOL! You must be new to Lego.
So buying the first 3 sets costs you nearly the same as a Switch console. I'll be skipping this.
Utterly repugnant.
It's super cool and a very Nintendo approach which I like a lot, but I'm going to wait and hope that they also do regular sets or even better some of the large Creator Expert sets!
I don't get why people are saying "I'd prefer normal mini figures". The whole point of this is it's interactive. Sure if they made it with mini figures, it's going to sell well with all of us middle age people ready to thow our disposable income at anything with Nintendo on it. But it would just sit on a shelf collceting dust. At least there's something unique about this.
@Kineas Lego is already interactive, this is just differently interactive. And let's not assume everyone would just put them on a shelf to collect dust were they regular sets, or indeed that these wont have that same fate because they are different. Personally I have a few modular buildings and yes they are on a shelf but also I play with them with my niece when she visits and I like to rearrange the minifigs and such every now and then myself for fun. Not that something being for display only should be considered a bad thing if that's how people gain enjoyment from them. I think we can all appreciate a good work of art hung on the wall.
I would 100% have preferred a regular set with normal minifigs, because that would be something that would bring me more enjoyment. That's why people are saying that, because it would bring them more enjoyment than this set does. It doesn't matter what the point of the set is if people would honestly prefer something else. But I can think that and still also think this set is cool and a great idea though, the two aren't mutually exclusive. This can be excellent but I can prefer something else, that is a perfectly fine opinion to have. It's not binary.
@Mince This is Lego pricing, generally it doesn't go down it goes up.
These new figures totally lack the charm of the old ones
I'm quite smitten with these designs to be honest! Bowser and his minions look great, and while Mario seems a little extra goofy, I feel the added cheekiness makes up for it.
Very excited to hear how well this whole thing actually works in the hands of the end-user. :9
@JayJ
There were ever "old" Lego Mario figures?
@Ogbert Ah crap, I posted something negative on NL didn't I. On a serious note, I never said normal mini figures don't bring enjoyment. My point was that they've had to enhance the figures to allow for the new interactive features which normal mini figures wouldn't allow, such as the LCD screen. I like these enhancements and don't see the problem. It's not like they've made these sets as Duplo, and they're just extra chunky for no reason.
If you don't like them, don't buy the sets.
There's plenty of manufacturers making Nintendo themed toys, such as Jak's Pacific. If they had made these sets, albeit in a solid no-assembly required form, I'm guessing no one would complain, you wouldn't even know about it because there'd be no hype about it. Everyone's just lost their sh*t because it's Lego and have all these pre-determined ideas about what it should be.
@Kineas
And as always, people giving a product a free pass because it has the Nintendo label slapped on it. Considering that in the past when LEGO have tried to deviate from the norm they have almost always failed badly, the success of this product will certainly be questionable.
As it is, lots of speciality pieces that have limited to no use outside these specific sets it certainly goes against the ethos that LEGO have built for themselves. Yes, give me minifigures, rather than this. Start with the familiar rather than dive straight into an alienating idea.
Jeez they look ugly!
@Kineas I don't intend to buy them. But you were stating:
"I don't get why people are saying "I'd prefer normal mini figures". The whole point of this is it's interactive."
So I was helping you understand why. It's a really simple reason and a perfectly fine one. You were taking a dig at the people who didn't like them and criticising them for it.
"Sure if they made it with mini figures, it's going to sell well with all of us middle age people ready to thow our disposable income at anything with Nintendo on it. But it would just sit on a shelf collceting dust."
Don't try and flip this on me. I was merely pointing out it's perfectly valid to not like them or to say you'd prefer something else and still think they're cool.
"I like these enhancements and don't see the problem."
I never said there was a problem with them, I said they're cool actually. I would just prefer something else. Which also isn't to say that the thing I want should exist in place of this product either. I think there's a place for both.
I think making a Lego Super Mario Minifigures line would do a lot for those who want standard figures and aren't the biggest fans of the direction of this theme.
