Tomorrow we'll be exactly one month away from getting our hands on Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch, and if you're really feeling it, you'll be happy to know that plenty of new screenshots have arrived courtesy of Nintendo itself.
The following images have all been shared to the official Japanese Twitter account for Xenoblade Chronicles; there are plenty of screens showing a number of star characters and the environments you'll be exploring next month. Check them all out:
Characters
Environments
Of course, earlier this month we were treated to another batch of lovely environment screens. If you missed those the first time around, make sure to give those a quick look, too. It was also recently revealed that the game will include both the original and remastered soundtracks, allowing you to take your pick between the two. Neat.
29th May can't come soon enough, right? Let us know if you're feeling the hype for Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition with a comment below

Cant wait to pick this up. I missed it on the 3ds, looking forward to seeing it on a bigger screen.
As much as I'm enjoying it, this is going to be a huge upgrade from Xenoblade 3D! Think I'm getting close to the end now so will be done ready to restart in a month's time!
The greatest rpg of all time makes a return. Can't wait to play again, it's gonna be fun.
It’s Reyn-time!
I can't wait to play this game again...I was so excited to play it for the first time back on 3DS, and it did not disappoint. Satorl Marsh is gonna be incredible, and the music is gonna be remastered too...ooooohhhhh I can't wait.
Looks really good! Is it 60fps???
When I played it on the Wii I would sometimes go around just looking at things…I might not get any questing done in this one.
@JH64 Doubtful. Nintendo usually targets 30 FPS with anything that isn't a platformer or a racer. Their adventure and RPG games are usually 30. Exceptions being A Link Between Worlds and Link's Awakening (though the latter should probably have targeted 30 given its inconsistent performance).
Might be other exceptions, but I can't think of them at the moment.
Just one more month to go!
Im hoping more of the Collectors edition become available but with the constraints on manufacturing at the moment Im not holding my breath.
this is gonna be amazing, i hope it enters the top 10 Switch games sold but it'll need nearly 5 million sales for that
it's possible though!
@Giygas_95
Can’t wait for the day when 60fps is minimum for every game!
I hate the blurry ness you get when moving the camera in 30fps games!
It really ruins the detail of the worlds
Not sure they had to lean even stronger into that anime aesthetic with the character faces, but ah well, what are you gonna do.
Just one month...I don't think my hype meter can take it!
The improvements to the character's faces are pretty great. Hope they do Xenoblade Chronicles X next!
Can't wait to play this again
@Giygas_95 Fire emblem warriors had a 30 and 60 fps option.
I can't gush about this game enough, but I won't because some folk that haven't played it yet...lucky sods.
@Kalmaro Ah that's right. That's an action game, and they usually go for 60 with those too.
@JH64 I like the smoothness of 60 too, but I wouldn't hold my breath for 60 becoming standard on consoles. Maybe it will happen eventually, but I kind of don't see it happening soon.
Have the Definitive Edition reserved. Hope they’ll do Xenoblade Chronicles X after this one!
I’m so excited for this. I never got to play it when it originally released. I loved XBC2, and everyone says the first one is much better so I’m excited to see why it’s so praised by many.
Man so ready to play this i have never fully played through this game unfortunately, but that will change come 5-29-20!
Thousand heart emojis!
I have XBC2 and am planning to get this once it's released. Which one should I play first if I haven't played either?
@progx @sevex At this point I hope they just go ahead and port the rest of the Wii U's library over. Might as well...I would love to see:
Xenoblade X
Mario 3D World (if we only got one more Wii U port this is probably the one I'd choose)
Paper Mario Color Splash
Star Fox Zero (would need some re-working)
Pikmin 3
Twilight Princess and Wind Waker HD (Then again...if we only got one more Wii U port, I might actually go with Twilight Princess HD)
Did I miss any major ones?
This is gonna be the best looking game on Switch.
Seems like we only ever see the same outfits. Is the mechanic of actually changing the character model with armor gone (and I missed the memo), or was that just done for this promo material?
@Giygas_95 I would buy almost all of those!
@OrangeSoda I hope it at least has Xenoblade X's fashion gear feature. I always prefer having characters look how they do in official art, but I still like getting the benefits of better armor.
@sevex Me too. I also wish Ubisoft would port Splinter Cell Trilogy, Splinter Cell Blacklist, and Ghost recon Future soldier (my all time favorite stealth games and third person shooter respectively), but I doubt it'll ever happen.
I might pick this up again to give it a run through... Would it help to release a remake of X perhaps?
I'd buy that one for the soundtrack alone...
Can't wait! Everything looks gorgeous, if a little blurry. Hopefully it's DOF or something and not overly enthusiastic resolution scaling (or just plain low resolution). Regardless, day one and third playthrough for me!
I don't know if it makes sense for me to buy a game a third time but I am tempted.
@JH64 While 60fps is obviously great, I truly have no issue with stable 30fps.
Also, can't wait to replay this!
Absolutely stunning.
@Kalmaro i had it on the 3ds but the game was so damn long i just never was able to get into it there, had it for the wii but i absolutly hated the control scheme with the nunchuck and wiimote still hate that setup so i cant wait to play this with my pro controller on my 4k display(my denon reciever does a damn good job upconverting)
@Kalmaro
Honestly, I didn’t care for it on 3DS. The game itself wonderful (of course), but man, it’s janky on 3DS. Textures are really bad and just overall not pleasant to look at. I didn’t care for the 3D either, it just wasn’t designed with that in mind during the Wii days. I’m not saying the game was bad, the art direction is wonderful, but this game needed a sprucing up more than being downgraded to fit the 3DS. I still kept it, but more for the sake of collection purposes.
This is the way to play it. I’ve been begging for an HD conversion and it’s finally here. I cannot wait. This HD version looks incredible.
@MoonKnight7 ... and its still portable. Its a Win Win.
@CorvoRevo
Amen! And it will still look gorgeous in portable mode too.
@merceria XC2 has some plot connections to the original game near the end. So, honestly, if you've waited this long to play XC2, you ought to just go ahead and play the DE of the original first.
@MoonKnight7 Portability and the lack of 3D has me hyped.
3D made my eyes hurt. The game looks good without it.
@Ralek85 It's kinda just their artstyle for everything now. Part of the reason is to just smooth out the graphics and get away with lower res textures cheaply. Maybe with the switch 2 we'll get games with a more varied art style.
To be honest, it's kind of lazy of Nintendo to be doing these upscaled remasters when we are getting full scale remakes nowadays for the same price. Link's awakening was a great example of a full priced remake being worth it.
It's just hard paying full price when games like Ratchet and Clank PS4, Link's awakening and Shadow of the Colossus have so much more work put into them.
@erv X is a bit weird. It almost makes sense for them to a sequel to it than a port.
@merceria I mean, Xbc 1 is arguably the better game in terms of story and to a lesser extent gameplay. It's not that xbc 2 is had, it's just tonally different and literally three thirds of the plot feels like filler. Plus the gacha system is just added busy work on top of how ridiculous it is to level up skills in Xenoblade anyway. Golden Country though I actually liked more than XBC1 because it's just xbc2 without all the annoying stuff that obviously didn't have to be there and at the heart of things the battle system in 2 was better.
Not that that matters since they reworked one for the remake to be like 2
I just started the new 3ds version and its great. The switch port is going to blow it out of the water but there is something I love about the dual screens.
Xenoblade Chronicles X is probably my favorite for gameplay (and sheer ambition for the world), but Xenoblade Chronicles was the best story so far (followed by Torna). XC2 had a decent story ruined by Gatcha characters that were not interesting and a lot of filler junk to progress character abilities.
However, I am still happy with my Wii copy of the game that runs on the Wii U. So like a lot of Nintendo offerings these days, there isn't enough to get me to pay $60 for a game I already own.
@MrMetroid
It IS full-scale a remake. The game is being redone in the XC2 Torna Engine, not the original Wii engine. Literally no different from Link's Awakening.
One of my favourite games of all time and not just on the Wii console. I cannot wait to, admittedly, triple dip!
@JR150 Is it? The screenshots and gameplay looked like they were very minor touch ups. Anyways my mistake and thanks for letting me know. I'll feel less guilty about my purchase I guess lol.
@Almighty-Koz why did you.never get a classic controller for Wii? I got the XC bundled with a red classic controller. Best game on Wii for me!
@MrMetroid You can head over to Kotaku, they made a comparison of the Switch Screenshots with Wii, then it's quite obvious.
@Ralizah woah... The plot connections are really thin and only there if you want to see them. It's basically the same connection every Xeno game has, which can be real or just devs messing with fans
@MrMetroid
No worries. It's a 1:1 shot-for-shot remake with new things added in. It's a perfect recreation for modern hardware similar to Trials of Mana.
@JR150 I wouldn't go that far Trials of Mana is a remake of a 2d game in 3d, here its "just" a remaster... But it will be great! Collectors Edition on Pre order 😎
Really wish the European special edition hadn't sold out straight away
Last time I played this was when it first came out to the U.S. on Wii. Playing this again since then will feel as a fresh experience, can't wait
@mazzel The plot connection at the end is substantive. It's not important enough that I'd recommend someone pass up XC2, but if they have the opportunity to play the original first and then appreciate that connection in the sequel, why shouldn't they?
@mazzel
It's more than just a simple remaster because it uses new assets and models from the original, which makes it a remake. XD
Have fun with it!
LOOK AT VALAK MOUNTAIN
Also I think you guys really need to reach out to Nintendo for an official confirmation about the soundtracks because that AUS/NZ tweet was deleted. We don't know if they got the info wrong or just revealed it early.
Never played it, really looking forward to this.
This looks so amazing! And the Best Girl Melia looks even cuter than before!
But is it just me, or does the Heropon Riki look more feminine?
@merceria Definitely this one. Even though 2 has different characters and settings, playing the first game helps you understand the end part of 2.
@Ralizah yeah sure, I agree just wanted to mention that the connection is on a very high level, therefore it's not needed to play the games in a certain order
@JR150 ok, maybe it's just because it's from 3d to 3d and not 2d to 3d like Links Awakening or trials of Mana
Especially for Trials, the devs more or less had to rebuild the whole game and push it to a new size, for XC it's "just" porting to a new engine, which of course is also a huge workload!!
@Xansies Yeah, I guess so. While I have no issue with the anime aesthetic (hell, I for one loved Alita, even bought the Artbook for it), it' can be problematic, if like 90% of the games of one genre look the same - more or less. I would also argue, that this aesthetic does not necessarily fit every atmosphere a title might want to deliver on.
@Ralek85 It also to makes.it more consistent with xbc 2, which did have a much lighter tone and did fit really well. One thing is that the angles are much sharper in this remake than in xbc2 so at least it's not like a homogenized anime style. This is literally edgier.
@Ralizah I mean, I wouldn't say thin. For the majority of the game, yeah, it's not at all clear they are related in any way, but the ending retroactively adds a lot of fun lore stuff on what the monado is and a lot on the character connected with that as well as how shulks powers work in general. So also the endings of both games happen at the exact same time which is kinda a neat touch.
They basically establish a consistent and literally connected multiverse plot over the two games, but it literally just doesn't become apparent until the last couple hours of xbc2. That's a lot more of a connection than in the other xeno games. *****, shulk killing zamza is explicitly why not zamza dies in xbc 2s universe.
@JH64 Probably not. This looks like a remake rather than a remaster. They probably shot for 30 fps. Looking at the new textures, I think that's probably a safe bet.
@Ralizah The thing is the plot connections go both ways. I didn't really care at all about Alvis until after playing XBC 2. 2 makes basically everything about the monado much better even if it's not entirely consistent. Same with the architect making zanza better
@Xansies Haha true that, but whether this is a good thing is a different question entirely, I feel. There is nothing wrong with consistency of course, then again I liked that neither of the three games felt really all THAT same'y. Mostly though, like I said, it's an overused aesthetic. It's just nice to tell games apart by looking at the characters, without knowing the characters - just by style so to speak. Not a big deal though, and you are probably right about wanting to stick closer to XBC2 - on the same system no less.
Seriously, this is looking like one of the best remasters I have seen
