At this point, it seems to have become a monthly tradition to ask Hideki Kamiya how the development of Bayonetta 3 is going for Nintendo Switch. So, how is it going?
In the latest issue of the Japanese publication Famitsu, the creator of the series was once again asked this same question during an interview about Platinum's recently released Bayonetta & Vanquish 10th Anniversary Bundle. This time, he simply said it was progressing smoothly and also noted how there's a lot of hidden information in the original teaser announcement.
Here's a translation courtesy of Ryokutya2089 (via Siliconera):
Bayonetta 3‘s development is progressing smoothly. Actually, there’s a lot of info hidden in the teaser announcement in 2017.
It seems not much has changed since Kamiya spoke to Famitsu at the start of this year when reassuring concerned fans the development was going very smoothly. Before this, in December, he said something similar. Rest assured, it's still on the way.
Although a release date for Bayonetta 3 hasn't been announced yet, PlatinumGames has said it has "several big announcements" to share early on in 2020. The developer is also planning to reveal a "major" announcement in next week's issue of Famitsu. Could it be tied to Bayonetta 3? Share your thoughts below.

Some may be upset that there's no substantial information, and I get that. But at least the developers are actually communicating to the players and giving updates every so often.
Shin Megami Tensei V on the other hand...yeah.
I stg we hear this same update every 2 months now.
Dude announced his game way to early, they got greedy.
Blocked so I can’t read the article... 😉
This is now the 3rd time he's said the same thing.
Bayonetta 1 and 2 were beyond awesome, it’s in safe hands, we just need to keep the faith and play the waiting game!
@JR150 SMT V on the other hand what? They provide the exact same "the development is going smooth" every year.
Platinum are in full PR mode at the moment trying to drum up interest in their products as they move into self publishing, trying to appease fans and shareholders. The two biggest problems they have are: A. Historically they aren’t particularly good at conversing with their customers (especially Kamiya), and B. They obviously have multiple games in production that aren’t ready enough to show.
I’m still a little concerned for them as although I’m part of their niche fan base, making what they want to make doesn’t necessarily sell to the mass market.
Also, I think that this piece gives us much more info, so the article should be about this: "Actually, there’s a lot of info hidden in the teaser announcement in 2017."
He meant it. Maybe we should do some UV scaning and all.
@mesome713 Maybe Nintendo got greedy and pushed for the announcment at the Game Awards to keep up the momentum from E3. They also got greedy with other titles like MP4 and let's not even talk about Pikmin 4.
@kopaka
On the contrary. Atlus hasn't said anything regarding SMT V outside of saying news is confirmed for "this year." And the game was announced three years ago. Any communication is better than no communication.
That's what Miyamoto said about Pikmin 4.
Never played a Bayonetta game before. When this one comes out, I'm gonna marathon all three back to back.
@Syndrome Metroid Prime 4 probably wouldn't have been announced at E3 2017 if Samus Returns wasn't a 3DS announcement. People were angry when any games came to 3DS and not Switch (see Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon for example).
As for Pikmin 4, was probably heavily reliant on Gamepad usage so changing that so normal controls can be used combined with the Mario Odyssey priority is probably why Pikmin 4 is taking so long.
@mesome713 Still, that doesn't change the fact that Metroid Prime 4 was announced too early. I mean, they only had a logo. If development was closer to completion, they would've had a better insight on whether it was going to work or not. It seems like they announced it too early to drum up hype for the Switch (see "Zelda U"), but then realised it wasn't going as planned. I wouldn't call any of it "greedy" though, it is what it is.
As for Pikmin 4: Eurogamer caught up with Miyamoto at E3 this week and asked for an update on Pikmin 4. There’s no need to fear, as Pikmin 4 and Hey! Pikmin are separate.
Regarding Pikmin 4, Miyamoto teased: “I’ve been told not to share anything about this from PR, but I can tell you it is progressing.” Nintendo also told the site separately, “We can confirm that Pikmin 4 is in development but that is all we can confirm at present.”
Hey Pikmin is not Pikmin 4.

@mesome713 The fact that they restarted the production of MP4 doesn't negate the point i'm trying to make. They handled with class what was already a bad situation which they created themselves by being greedy in the first place.
To me it looks like Bayonetta 3 is the flagship game at Platinum, and is why it requires much more dev time than their other games.
@Ventilator Or its a game Nintendo fully funds, so they focus on stuff they have to fund themselves. Platinum is greedy like that. If it's not on their dime, they don't care.
"While Bayonetta 3 might not have a release date just yet, it's expected to arrive at some point in 2020."
Ummm... where did you get this info? I haven't seen or heard anything to back that up.
@Syndrome I mean they are a business. Every move they make should be focused on selling a video game. I think they’re trying their best to adhere to only announcing near future releases, but obviously games still take forever to make and can hit unpredictable delays.
@mesome713 yeah everyone’s greedy except Nintendo. Nintendo can do no wrong. They are so charitable
@NicolausCamp I've updated this section of the article. Fingers crossed we hear something about it next week.
This is a pathetic response and he's starting to annoy me.
2 years since the announcement, and kamiya is saying it's going well. Pretty standard stuff here, so everyone just R E L A X. The greedy corporations angle is too broad and simple, and this is nothing out of the ordinary. Unless a game has a hard date in the trailer, expect a wait of 1-4 years, with some exceptions here and there. Literally always been the same
his response to Bayonetta 3 has been the same for 2 years now "development is going well" if Bayonetta 3 isn't a 2020 release I will be shocked
"Development is going wel"
Sits back grabs his coffee and continue his netflix serie.
I’d put money on p+ has b3 done and ready with a release date set, and we will find out 2 months before. This seems to be the trend this gen, and I’m sure Nintendo knows exactly when it’ll be out.
Pre-ordered it on Amazon a few years ago. It's comical in the sense that every year it gets bumped back to New Year's Eve
@Donutman I'd say the same, though I bet they are still working on it. December would be a safe bet
@Syndrome how is announcing games and telling people games are in the works being greedy??
Lol I didnt know by telling fans about games in the works is being greedy.i thought games living on microtransactions was being greedy.i guess talking is being greedy and microtransactions ain't being greedy.
@Darkyoshi98 I was going to post exactly the same thing. I think some people are quite confused as to what greedy actually means.
The simple fact that there IS a Bayonetta 3 coming up is beyond awesome. And yeah, the game was announced very early, but it was to sell Switch consoles.
And there is no lie here : Bayonetta 3 is coming up on Switch. So, as far as we know, nobody lied to us or anything like that.
Did we expect the game to show off a moment ago ? Yeah, sure.
But I think they're gonna launch an awesome trailer and the game just after that. Maybe this summer, I don't know.
I'm really trusting Kamiya on this : Bayonetta is a very strong IP now, maybe not in terms of sales, but in terms of representation.
We just have to wait a little more.
Personally, I prefer hearing "progress is fine" from time to time than getting spoilers on a product I'd like to experience myself. That's probably nostalgia speaking, remembering the pre-internet days when I would buy a game and boot it without knowing anything what to expect from it
Maybe a release date when it's closer
For the subject of whether or not a game is announced too early or not, I think this is a lesson for both the developer and the consumer as far as an exercise in not bending under the pressure of needing to show something so soon and showing some measure of patience respectively.
Similar to Metroid Prime 4, I'm happy just knowing that this is a game that is currently in development. The details about the release will come when it comes. In the meantime people should just relax and play some Animal Crossing New Leaf on your Nintendo 3DS.
Without any gameplay footage, this is looking discouraging at this point. The situation reminds me of Earthbound 64, Beyond Good & Evil 2, and Duke Nukem Forever.
Hopefully they're not trying to decide what parts of the game to sell separately as DLC.
Dude's gotta say something when he gets asked again and again about Bayo news. "Proceeding well" is better than the alternative.
When they're ready to share, they'll share.
@Crockin honestly the last decade of gaming with trilogies with releases only 1-2 years apart and the like make me feels like they REALLY skewed up players expectations vis a vis the pace at which games "should" release that it sometimes make me uneasy tbh.
I'm still catching up on getting some of the 2019 releases I was interested into but couldn't get right away because there was such a massive glut of releases that year for me, especially in September alone.
Dragon Quest Builders 2, Fire Emblem Three Houses, Astral Chain, Dragon Quest XI S, Daemon X Machina, Luigi's Mansion... to not mention Pokemon either. And i'm probably forgetting others I was interested into but also had to let pass for the meanwhile
It would have been impossible for me to get all of that on the days they released so much it was a chain gun fire pace of releases.
Some of these I only even got this month in fact despite them releasing last summer.
I've not even gotten the Switch port of Ni No Kuni yet either X_X
Just announce its not a switch exclusive anymore due to China money already.
That is what i like to hear, Kamiya-san!
@Ludovsky haha Well the expectations of that audience regarding a release date is totally on them since none was given. Bayo has a little more polish than a copy paste sequel, it was announced 2 years ago, guy says it’s doing well, this all completely normal. This cycle has always always been the same for 3D games from Japanese developers.
@mesome713 sounds like your just being impatient and only thinking of only yourself not for the devs who are taking their time to make a good bayonetta game like they did with bayonetta 2.
@BloodyMurder its going to remain exclusive to nintendo systems since nintendo cares about the ip more then sony and microsoft does.
I don’t know who’s more tightlipped about their game Nintendo about Breath of the Wild or Platinum about Bayonetta
@mesome713 Nintendo is also greedy, especially on Switch vs Wii U game pricing. Let's not forget that using Wii U account on Switch, purchases does not transfer to Switch.
Platinum using crowd funding now doesen't give them much more respect.
Anyways. If Bayonetta 3 is ever released, i'm buying it.
@GrandScribe lol botw2 was announced less than year ago. Again, standard stuff
@kopaka Probably something hidden in the spell circle or something along those lines.
@JR150 Atlus has said multiple times that SMT V is still in development, just like Platinum has said multiple times Bayo 3 is still in development.
-Feb 2018: Producer Kazuyuki Yamai states the game is in full-scale development. "At the start, the production of this project only had a few people at its core, with more and more people gradually becoming involved. Although this number is still increasing, I feel that the production staff has come together considerably to a point—and reaching a milestone—where we can say we’ve started full-scale development."
-Aug 2018: Yamai says "Shin Megami Tensei V is in active development. It’s really being developed." and "Most of the demons and characters have been implemented and are moving on the actual hardware."
-Dec 2018: In year end retrospectives/interviews for both Famitsu and 4Gamer, Yamai apologizes for the lack of SMT V news, says development is still progressing.
-Apr 2019: Naoto Hiraoka ("Atlus director for the console game software business of SEGA group"), in an interview with GNN Gamer, says "Shin Megami Tensei V is still under development. However, because this is Atlus’ first time tackling Nintendo Switch game development, there are many things to consider. How to present the game is our future challenge, so please wait patiently for follow-up news."
-Dec 2019: In their New Year's card to Famitsu for 2020, Atlus simply says "Both Shin Megami Tensei V and Project Re Fantasy are under active development."

@Crockin and tbh I wouldn't even be surprised if it somehow released this year in the holidays. Though this said March 2021 would be a very nice timing for BotW's 4th anniversary AND a way to skew trends again with a massive grade release during a time of the year that is usually somewhat of a dry spell for Nintendo (the post-holidays of January-March since generally it's smaller releases that time if the year since people still recover from the holidays rush's expenses)
Either ways i'm almost glad there isn't too many releases in the near future yet as i'm still playing some of the 2019 releases having just started Astral Chain and FE3H study were acquired this year while I now have a second playthrough of Builders 2 ongoing(and my island of Awakening hub is now REALLY benefiting from the accumulated creative experience garnered during my first playthrough)
@DRWii lol you will never convince anyone here that from announcement to release we generally have to wait 1-4 years give or take, despite the fact that's it's always been that way and this is totally normal.
@Ludovsky I would be totally surprised if Zelda was this year. Links awakening fills the Zelda qouta for 2 years, and animal crossing likely the biggest 1st party Nintendo game this year. All speculation, but the marketing cycles never lie.
Actions speak louder than words.
@Crockin It’s very normal for Nintendo to be this tight lipped, a lot of other companies are less tight lipped.
@GrandScribe Nintendo is publishing Bayonetta 3 right? Plus other developers can definitely be as tight-lipped as Nintendo. Rockstar, platinum, Sega, Bethesda, retro, sora, Hal, square, atlus, b namco...some games you get constant updates, some don't.
@RiasGremory Your right, it's just that's what I don't like about these old reveals. I need more info.
....Um, yeah, didn't he already say this?
Well, I’m sure they will release pics and footage of Bayonetta 3 eventually. In the meantime... the progress is going smoothly.
I’m sure it’ll turn out great; looking forward to playing it once it’s released.
@Crockin perhaps though I note a lack of confirmed holidays releases though. And the truth is THAT is the biggest releases of a year for Nintendo.
Mario Odyssey, Smash Bros, Pokemons. Every years this far had their Fall/Holidays juggernaut lined up close to the holidays rather than before. So, considering it's releasing next month because of delays I would not really think of Animal Crossing -as this year's big release because pre-delays it was more likely planned to be a 2019 juggernaut for a double-whammy holidays knockout with pokemon.
Which is to say that 2020's "juggernaut" is actually probably simply unrevealed yet. So who knows what Fall/Holidays will bring us to try and be in the Odyssey/Smash Bros/Pokemon grade if sales(all of them being 10+ millions copies games).
@Ludovsky last few years for sure have been good, but it's not always the case if you look back. I think a combo of paper Mario and Bayonetta 3 would be perfectly serviceable holiday releases. Again just my own opinion, but I do not see Zelda this year.
Well they obviously not going to be talking about Bayonetta 3 this week. I think it’s safe to say the number 3 spot, in the “Platinum 4” reveals is for Bayonetta 3.
@Octane Good job on all the Pikmin 4 posts, saved me the trouble. 😁
In the meantime, we all are itching for a Nintendo Direct. They're trolling with us on this one
I'm going to get my PhD before this comes out... Three years in the making, and I think it might take two more.
Bayonetta 3 is going to be simply awesome. Can't wait to play it when it finally hits us. I'm more excited to see how different it is than 1 and 2. I think kamiya eluded to that in an interview sometime last year but i could be wrong. Nonetheless, it's one of my most anticipated games for 2020 and beyond.
@MrGawain Platinum doesn't have shareholders. While there's an undisclosed minority investment from Tencent, they are privately held and don't need to appease shareholders in the form of stock owners.
Isn’t that what they always say when things are going the opposite of well?
‘Ladies and gentlemen, there’s a large fire on board, but don’t panic, everything’s under control and running smoothly.’
can't wait till next year for our amazing Bayonetta!
Can't wait til next week when we get the next nintendolife article about how Bayonetta 3 is still going fine.
