What would happen if you combined the graphics, style and input of the wonderful Super Mario 64 with the gameplay of the equally wonderful (yes, we said it) Super Mario Sunshine? Well, probably something like this.
Modder Kaze Emanuar has released a new Super Mario 64 mod which plays out as a miniature version of GameCube's Super Mario Sunshine. A trailer for the project was released (above) featuring a cracking mashup of the Super Mario theme and The Jackson 5's 'I Want You Back'. You weren't expecting that, were you?
You can see the mod in action in the video below. Emanuar walks us through the project, showing off the early, familiar locations of Super Mario Sunshine - who could forget the sights and sounds of Delfino Plaza? - and how the world looks and behaves in the style of Mario 64. It might not be as polished as an official release, but it's still pretty fun seeing the two games mashed together like this.
While we're on the topic, where's Super Mario Sunshine 2, Nintendo?
Thanks to CM30 for the tip!

Love a good bit of SilvaGunner 😂
@Anti-Matter actually most creators love to see what mods can be made from their games, they love to see the creativeness of the community that has built around their game
I love demakes. I always wonder what certain video games would have looked like if technology couldn't improve.
@Anti-Matter It isn't all about you.
And none of that applies here, really.
Impressive to get the mechanics in! Hope they release assets and some others pick it up with maybe some original levels, too. Super Mario Dawnshine or something haha
@Xiovanni Ha! I always assumed Petey was a hermaphrodite, able to reproduce asexually. Technically both and neither gender - i.e. non-binary gender discussion doesn't apply here
I think the modder has done it the wrong way round though. Should have recreated Super Mario 64 in the game engine of Super Mario Sunshine - now that, I'd play. SMS has a great game engine, Mario controls really well, camera control is good (although I play SMS hacked to invert the y-axis as the regular way is backwards by modern standard).
I wish Nintendo would reproduce Mario Sunshine in the Mario Sunshine engine.
Kaze is a prolific modder. I've been playing Super Mario 64 two player on real N64 and I am stunned at the quality on real console - it simply works. In 1995 Nintendo said it couldn't be done.
@Anti-Matter
Just because YOU had a single unfortunate incident with a modded game, doesn't mean all modded games are like that
Not too mention that this is a demake of Mario Sunshine.
A lot of modders manage to do amazing things, solely because of their love for the medium or a game.
From the Metroid 2 remake, ( AMR 2 ) to recreating Vice City in GTA 5 to recreating Tomb Raider 2 in the unity engine from the ground up. To recreating the entirety of Morrowind or Daggerfal in the Oblivion of Skyrim engines as mods.
And that's just the ones from the top off my head.
It's disingenuous, not too mention selfish and myopic to discount all the great mods out there, just cause you happened to come across one you didn't like years ago.
@ThanosReXXX
Thought he just deleted it or the system removed it cause of downvotes.
@KitsuneNight Yeah, deleted/removed is what I meant to say.
Corrected as we speak.
@ThanosReXXX
Didn't know that could be done. Good to find I'm not crazy because I can't find a comment everyone is referring to.
Ya learn something everyday. Thanks muchly.
Update: And things had already moved on whilst I was posting. Seems I'm always an hour late and a dime short.
I really hope we get a re-release of this game. This is the only 3D Mario game that I never finished.
People can defend Sunshine all they want, but the blue coins are just plain old bad game design.
@k8sMum
2 comments.
He complained that modders are misleading and create "dirty" nude mods cause he once played a unlicensed nes rom hack as a kid. ( av bishojo senshi girl fighter )
So clearly all mods must be bad then ever since.
@KitsuneNight
Ah. Well, Anti is definitely one of a kind.
@k8sMum Well, next to the edit option, there's also a delete option on your own comments, so I assume that all the reactions got to him, and he simply deleted the comment himself.
It was already gone before I got in here as well, but it would seem that we didn't really miss out on anything. I'm certainly not going to lose any sleep over it, seeing as his comments on things like these are pretty much the same every time, so I think I can probably fill in any of the blanks...
@k8sMum
That's what I got from his comment anyway.
One bad modded game means all modded games are bad apparently.
@KitsuneNight Yeah, his comments and thoughts on things are always pretty black & white. No contrast or variation whatsoever. It's either this or that, good or bad. No shades of grey, no colors. Just a simple yes or no. Very, VERY short-sighted and single-minded.
@KitsuneNight
Here in Indonesia, peoples modded PES or FIFA PS2 games with unofficial contents, then distributed the pirated discs to public.
The worst part, i saw with my eyes there was a rated 18+ PS2 game modded with well known kids Cartoon characters inside, then sold the modded pirated games to kids !
How did you answer that ??
And that was raised my concern to see modding could be misused for something dangerous.
Sorry, i didn't mean to start the argument about modding but i have seen too much negative impact from modding especially in my country Indonesia with a lot of Indonesian peoples that still did their dirty business.
@Anti-Matter Indonesia must be a terrible country for gaming.
@Octane
Er... What ?
Am i not allowed to say different opinion about modding ?
Well, maybe my opinion sounds very opposite but i didn't mean to start the argument.
I just only told that modding could be misused for negative purposes and i didn't really think modding was a really awesome job.
In my opinion, modding was an activity like two sided blade. One side, modding can be used for creating awesome stuffs but on the other side, modding can be misused for negative activities.
I apologize if my previous comments have started some arguments.
@1UP_MARIO
Yes, exactly. 😑
Sorry.... 😣
Indonesian peoples keep modding everything to death.
From making Recondition PS2 / PS3 machines, polished until looks like Brand New products, then they are offering Jailbreak service to copying pirated games into the Recondition machines, peoples keep playing with pirated games and the pathetic cycles keep repeated forever.
I've got a very good feeling Mario Sunshine is going to come to the Switch any day now.

@Woomy-NNYes You're so hilarious. You crack me up.
Edit: pfff... nice work trying to tag yourself, @Woomy-NNYes
@Woomy_NNYes
...As if.
Nintendo bringing Cube games to the NX is as likely as Sega stopping with its 16 bit fixation.
@Anti-Matter
That's as maybe but you should have said something to the effect in your original post.
Because most countries, most other posters are from, myself included ( the West ) are not bootleg free for alls.
When we talk about mods we tend to mean either mods for pc games or projects like this.
There is piracy here for sure. There is piracy everywhere, but it's not so bad that you can buy a pirated modded game in the shops.
@KitsuneNight Yeah, I know cube ports probably aren't coming I planted that ignorant wishfill thinking about Mario Sunshine coming to the switch, and then made fun myself in the same comment. I thought it was a clever, silly way to indicate I was joking I felt creative, and knew I took a comedic risk.
@Woomy_NNYes
I know you were joking.
I just latched on tot he if only part.
I think they always end up putting too much details in these mods and it ends up looking more like a dreamcast game
@Anti-Matter please stop derailing the thread.
@everyone else: you're free to disagree, ignore, and downvote his comments, but least please do not directly insult or bully another user. Calling him creepy, sad, and implying he is sexually attracted to children is not ok here. So let's please put him on ignore and not do it again.
@Eel where did he say the children part? Wtf?
@PickledKong64 I honestly have no idea where the "He's" came from. I've already removed it because it made no sense.
However we had a least two users implying that in their replies to him.
@Anti-Matter I was just joking anti.
Every country has piracy not just Indonesia
@Eel oh ok my bad. Yeah ppl are being a bit too hard on him. While I don't agree with him, ppl should only argue what he said not his character
@Eel I see you've been busy here...
Weird that my initial comment also got deleted, though. I said nothing insulting, I just noted that Anti was apparently at it again, and wondered if it would ever dawn on him to do things a bit different, seeing as the outcome is nearly always the same.
Also, if you remove someone's comment, it might be an idea to at least let the involved people know, by typing something in place of that removed comment (something that some of the other mods actually do), instead of it being a rather nasty surprise when they revisit a thread.
And personally, I'm more in favor of giving people a fair warning and then allowing them to edit the comment themselves, instead of making the comments section completely nonsensical by randomly ripping out reactions...
Needless to say of course, that if they don't heed the warning, then they deserve every counter-measure that's available.
@liveswired In 1995, it probably couldn’t.
But yeah, point taken, pretty amazing. 🙂
Paper mario (return to form), sunshine 2, BOTW 2, is that too much to ask?
@PickledKong64
I agree with that people tend to be way too hard on him.
Especially cause his grasp of English might be a tad weak.
@Anti-Matter and so what?
@sheriff yes
Thread was far more interesting than the topic at hand.
Popcorn compatible.
Looks surprisingly strong.
@ReikoMortis Not a fan of demakes?
